t was one of the greatest individual performances
in Syracuse University’s storied football history.
Linebacker Doug Hogue recorded a schoolrecord 6.5 tackles for a loss, 3.5 of them sacks,
and forced a fumble and the Orange upset No. 25
Rutgers 31-13 on Nov. 21 in the Carrier Dome.
Hogue was honored as the national defensive player
of the week and SU fans could see the light at the
end of a four-year tunnel that featured a 10-37 record,
with four of the losses coming to the resurgent Scarlet
Knights, a team they had once dominated.
Hogue’s performance will be long remembered,
yet it overshadowed just how wounded Syracuse was
entering that game. Middle linebacker Derrell Smith
stood on the sideline with a season-ending knee injury. He was joined by strong safety Max Suter (arm),
tight end Nick Provo (knee), tight end Cody Catalina
(knee) and defensive end Jared Kimmel (knee). Star
receiver Mike Williams stood somewhere outside the
Dome after leaving the team.
Defeating Rutgers convincingly minus those starters
was a big accomplishment for first-year head
coach Doug Marrone. Fast-forward a year
and he faces a similar challenge. …

HOWTHEY
STACKUP
Quarterbacks
SU’s Ryan Nassib (.561, 173.7 ypg, 15
TDs, 5 INTs) has done a solid job without
a lot of options at wide receiver. RU’s
quarterback situation remains in flux.

RU
Running backs
Tricky to gauge, as RU will use a good
dose of Wildcat, but in a straight-up
comparison the nod goes to SU’s Delone
Carter and Antwon Bailey.
SU
RU
Receivers
RU’s Mohamed Sanu (40 catches for
389 yards) can run, pass and catch, a
dangerous combination. SU’s thin corps
is playing banged up.
Maps
SU
RU
Offensive line
RU’s group has allowed 35 sacks, a big
reason the team’s run total is so poor
(104.9 ypg). SU’s line is good in run but
struggles at times to protect.
SU
RU
Defensive line
RU has a good one in DT Scott Vallone,
but overall the group has underachieved
(seven sacks). SU’s front must rebound
from poor second half last week.
Satellite
SU
RU
Linebackers
RU’s unit, led by senior Antonio Lowery
is OK but banged up. SU’s trio of Derrell
Smith (75 tackles), Doug Hogue and
Marquis Spruill is fast and aggressive.
SU
RU
Secondary
It’s all there on:
syracuse.com/weather
RU strong safety Joe Lefeged is a Thorpe
semifinalist, and secondary has allowed
only 10 TD passes. SU’s unit is most
improved on the team.

RU
Special teams
SU has better kicker and punter, but RU
has made several game-changing plays
via big returns and six blocked kicks
(four punts, two FG tries).
