oug Marrone wants you to know it will be
just another workday in a coaching career
filled with them.
“Wherever I’ve been as a player or
coach, every game that week was the most important
game for me,” Marrone said. “Whether it’s the first
game or the last game, the NFC Championship or
AFC playoff, every game was the most important
game. If I start putting one game being more important than the other I’ve sold my team short.”
Thus, by default, the season-opener between the
Syracuse University football team and Minnesota
at noon Saturday (ESPN2) in the Carrier Dome is
the most important game in Marrone’s career. Not
because it is his first as a head coach. Not because it
is at his alma mater. Not because his beloved Orange
stands at a critical crossroads in its mostly proud history and it is Marrone’s job to steer it safely back
onto the right path.
Simply because it is the next game. Yet, it is
so much more than that for a community that has
watched its team go 10-37 over the last four seasons,
sink toward the bottom of the Big East and
the national barrel and become the butt
of jokes in the national media. …

Receivers
Eric Decker (84 catches for 1,074 yards in
2008) could be the best receiver SU faces
all season. The Orange got a huge boost
with the return of Mike Williams.

DE Willie VanDeSteeg (team-leading

good quickness and depth up front. Led
by Arthur Jones, so does the Orange.
It’s all there on:
Sept. 5
UM returns a group that was neither
great at opening holes (103.8 rushing
yards per game) nor protecting the QB
(30 sacks). SU is in the same boat.
