hether the message was intended is
beside the point. It was there. No one
needed to read between the lines to get it.
“We’re playing a Rutgers team that’s
a good football team,” Doug Marrone said earlier this
week. “Coach (Greg) Schiano has been there for nine
years. He’s done a good job of building that program.”
Nine years. In the life of a college football coach
it is an eternity. Football fans with short memories
will look at Rutgers and see a team that will be going
bowling for the fifth consecutive season, a college
football version of turning water to wine. They may
forget the growing pains that preceded the miracle.
Here’s a refresher: 2-9 in 2001, 1-11 in 2002, 5-7 in
2003, 4-7 in 2004. A decidedly un-miraculous 12-34
record, including a 3-24 mark in the Big East, before
Schiano began to make good on his pledge to awaken
the long dormant potential of Rutgers, a school surrounded by a lot of high school football talent.
Some credit for the team’s recent golden age
goes to the school’s administration, which stuck by
Schiano through those first four lean seasons and
even helped him out by providing embarrassingly soft nonconference schedules
that continue to this day. …

Each team has a hard-running, physical
tailback complemented by a shifty
understudy. SU’s Delone Carter could
reach 1,000 yards.

Receivers
RU’s Tim Brown (21.5 ypr) gives his team
a deep threat SU’s group sorely lacks

Offensive line
RU’s group is big and has paved the
way for more offense but against a
way weaker schedule. SU’s group has
improved lately.
RU

Defensive line
RU gets great upfield push from its

vs. run. SU’s group minus Art Jones is
small but active.

Loss of leading tackler Derrel Smith is a
