No one needed to read between the lines to get it. “We’re playing a Rutgers team that’s a good football team,” Doug Marrone said earlier this week. “Coach (Greg) Schiano has been there for nine years. He’s done a good job of building that program.” Nine years. In the life of a college football coach it is an eternity. Football fans with short memories will look at Rutgers and see a team that will be going bowling for the fifth consecutive season, a college football version of turning water to wine. They may forget the growing pains that preceded the miracle. Here’s a refresher: 2-9 in 2001, 1-11 in 2002, 5-7 in 2003, 4-7 in 2004. A decidedly un-miraculous 12-34 record, including a 3-24 mark in the Big East, before Schiano began to make good on his pledge to awaken the long dormant potential of Rutgers, a school surrounded by a lot of high school football talent. Some credit for the team’s recent golden age goes to the school’s administration, which stuck by Schiano through those first four lean seasons and even helped him out by providing embarrassingly soft nonconference schedules that continue to this day. … Click the links below for more SU football coverage on » Videos » Photo galleries » Live game updates » Audio slideshows from Dave Rahme and photographer Frank Ordoñez of The Post-Standard » The Orange Football blog with The Post-Standard’s Donnie Webb » Bud Poliquin, The Post-Standard’s sports columnist » Orangecast, The Post-Standard’s SU sports podcast » Follow PSfootball on Twitter Click here to read the rest of Dave Rahme’s game preview on syracuse.com » Subscribe to the Orange Insider real-time FAST! jobs EASY! 2009TEAM STATISTICS HOWTHEY STACKUP Quarterbacks The TD/INT ratio says it all. RU true freshman Tom Savage sits at an enviable 10/2 and Orange QBs at an unenviable 12/15. NOW! Search RU SU Running backs Each team has a hard-running, physical tailback complemented by a shifty understudy. SU’s Delone Carter could reach 1,000 yards. RU SU Receivers RU’s Tim Brown (21.5 ypr) gives his team a deep threat SU’s group sorely lacks now that Mike Williams has quit the team. Videos RU SU Offensive line RU’s group is big and has paved the way for more offense but against a way weaker schedule. SU’s group has improved lately. RU SU Defensive line RU gets great upfield push from its ends, who have 15.5 sacks, and is solid vs. run. SU’s group minus Art Jones is small but active. Current Jobs RU SU Linebackers Loss of leading tackler Derrel Smith is a severe blow this week, although Doug Hogue is a good one. RU’s group is just OK. RU SU Secondary It’s all there on: syracuse.com/jobs Discover the advantage. Post-Standard Media In print and online. RU’s secondary, led by cornerback and leading tackler Devin McCourty, has 13 picks. SU’s has allowed 21 TD passes. RU SU Special teams SU gets edge at kicker and punter, but its coverage teams are a weak spot. Devin McCourty has a 98-yard kickoff return for RU.
