Whole Family Gathering Workshop UNIT 1 , God s Gift of Family This workshop provides the first of five two-hour sessions, introducing the first unit of the RCL Benziger Family Life curriculum. In this first session, program directors, catechists, and participating families will have the opportunity to reflect on Unit 1’s theme of God’s Gift of Family. During this session: 3Participating families will reflect on what it means to be a Catholic family, and how we can show others that we are a Catholic family. 3Children will complete Lesson 1 from their student book in individual grade level groups. They will complete Lesson 2 at home with their family. 3Parents and guardians will meet together as a large group to become aware of the goals and major content of Unit 1. Time will be provided for discussion, faith sharing, and questions. 3A family activity will follow these individual groups to conclude the session. Alternate options are provided for parishes that are unable to offer learning sessions at every grade. 1 of 4 RCL Benziger Family Life Whole Family Gathering Workshop Instructions: 1. Be sure the meeting room is set to a comfortable temperature for large groups. If planned, be certain that the room can be sufficiently darkened for optimal viewing of presentations via projection device or television. 3Hospitality. Provide an attractively arranged hospitality table. Seasonal healthy snacks and beverages are beneficial to offer during breaks. 2 of 4 RCL Benziger Family Life Whole Family Gathering Workshop Instructions: 1. God’s Gift of Family © 2011 RCL Publishing LLC UNIT 1 , God s Gift of Family Session Plan Introduction (20 minutes) elcome: Have greeters at the doors W welcoming families as they arrive. Give them nametags. Be sure that children have their Student Edition books and that parents have their Parent Connection magazines. Parent Group: Use the main gathering space for the parent group since that group tends to need the larger space. The facilitator for this group will use the provided Parent Plan guide to lead the parents in their group session. Opening Prayer: Begin with the Opening Prayer service provided, or another model that can easily be duplicated at home. Keep the prayer service simple and appropriate for the time during the liturgical year when this session is being offered. Children Group: Invite each catechist to lead their children group to a pre-assigned room where all materials are available. Remind them to re-gather in the main space at the designated time for a 15-minute break and Part 2 of this session. 3Following 3 prayer, suggest that families create their own home prayer center in a place where the family gathers and/or passes frequently each day. Suggest that their prayer center include items to reflect the liturgical season, a family Bible, and holy objects or sacramentals such as a crucifix, icon, and holy water. Suggest also that the family keep a prayer book to record petitions for family members in need and praises to thank God for blessings received. Break the Ice: Invite all the members of each family at each table to introduce themselves by sharing something that they like to do (i.e. a hobby, sport, favorite activity). Opening Remarks: Explain that in the first part of this session, the children will be working with a catechist in groups according to grade level or learning level, and the parents will be gathered together for their adult session. 3 of 4 Part I: Breakout Groups (40 minutes) rade Level Groups: If you have the G necessary number of catechists, group the children according to their grade-level (K-8). These groups will complete Lesson 1 in their Student Edition books with the guidance of their catechist using the Teacher Edition guide. 3Learning Level Groups: If having a catechist for each grade is not possible, you may group the children into three learning groups, using the Learning Plan designed for that level: • Primary: Grades K—2 • Intermediate: Grades 3— 5 • Junior High: Grades 6—8 Break (15 minutes) RCL Benziger Family Life Whole Family Gathering Workshop Instructions: 1. Discover: Invite each family to answer three discussion questions. Allow fifteen minutes for the discussion, making sure each family member has a chance to share his or her thoughts. Have someone from each family record the ideas shared in their discussion: 3 re all members of our family Catholic? If A not, what gift do these members bring to our family? 3 o we have any special religious traditions, D devotions, or celebrations that express our family’s Catholic faith? 3 hat values do we practice that show W others the centrality of our family’s Catholic faith? Integrate: Now invite each family to participate in the following activity for fifteen minutes: 3 raw a Family Table that illustrates and D identifies all the family members who would sit around the table for a special family meal. 3 riefly discuss how each person at the table B contributes the family’s Catholic faith. After the Family Table activity, invite families to share new insights with the large group. 4 of 4 (15 minutes) Invite each family to do the following activities prior to the next session. Activity 1: Family Time Resource Kit Invite each family to follow the instructions in their Family Time Resource kit at home. This involves the following commitment: 3Gather as a family to share what everyone has learned from Unit 1: God’s Gift of Family, using the Family Time page in their child’s book. 3Spend 30 minutes with each child over the next few weeks to review Lessons 1 & 2 in the child’s book. 3Begin to work on practicing the virtues covered in the unit. Pray together and participate at Mass. Activity 2: Family Covenant Distribute the Family Covenant handouts, if not already done. Invite each member of the family to sign the covenant as an expression of their commitment to help their family express their Catholic faith. Encourage families to display this covenant somewhere for all to see and read. Sending Forth Prayer As you conclude the session, be sure to thank all of the participants, volunteers, and individuals involved in making this session a success. Encourage continued fellowship among the various participating families throughout these five sessions. Then lead the group in praying the Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…Amen.
