Kindergarten Library Card Initiative
In November, Ramsey County Library children’s
librarians visited suburban Ramsey County
kindergarten classrooms to promote the benefits of
having a library card. The goal of this program is to
have all children obtain a library card at the onset of
their school education.
“The classroom visits are a chance for us to connect
with students and highlight what the library has to
offer,” said Children’s Coordinator Monica Stratton.
Each kindergarten student is offered the opportunity
to sign up for a card through their classroom teacher.
In 2015, the Library received 1,403 card applications through this program.
Children's Librarian Jennifer Dietrich hands library card
to kindergartner during ceremony.
On January 30, students and their families were invited to the annual Library Card Party. The
day-long event included presentations by author Trisha Speed Shaskan and illustrator Stephen
Shaskan, a library scavenger hunt with prizes, and a library card presentation ceremony where
each kindergartner's name is announced as they receive a free book and their library card. More
than 300 kindergarten students received their card that day.
Funding to support this program comes from the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries and
Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
New Brighton Increases Hours
Last year Ramsey County Library began a pilot study in order to evaluate the feasibility of
increasing hours on Tuesday mornings at the library in New Brighton. A positive effect was seen
in both circulation and visits with the added hours. The library in New Brighton will not only
maintain the Tuesday mornings, but will also add Monday hours. In late December, the County
Board voted to add Monday hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting April 4, 2016. The New Brighton
branch will then be open 45 hours a week.

contributor to Smithsonian and The New York Times. This program is funded
with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

County Library
in Roseville, 2180
Hamline Avenue
North. Thousands
of books, DVDs, CDs and Talking Books
from all seven Ramsey County Library
branches and private donations will be
sold. All items sell for $1 or less.
The Friends are pleased to announce the speaker for
the Annual Luncheon will be Jonathan Odell, author
of the acclaimed novel, The Healing, which explores
the subversive role that story plays in the healing of
an oppressed people. Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks
League, a reimagining of his first novel and, The View
from Delphi, both deal with the struggle for equality
in pre-civil rights Mississippi. With his husband,
award-winning artist Jim Kuether, Odell is currently
completing an illustrated children’s book, Just Call Me a Dinosaur.
Volunteers sort books by genre in
fiction, several non-fiction categories,
children and young adult categories to
make shopping easier for bargain-loving
shoppers. As always, browsing titles is still
part of the adventure! If you still own a
VHS player, you’ll find lots of tapes - four
for $1.
Wednesday, April 20, 2 to 5 p.m. is an
exclusive “Friends Members Only” presale. Memberships can be purchased at the
door for $20.
Public sale hours are:
Born in Mississippi, Odell grew up in the Jim Crow South and became involved in the
civil rights movement in college. In 2003, Minneapolis civil rights leader and city council
person Don Samuels and Odell founded the Institute for Authentic Dialogue to spark
conversations across race.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune, St. Paul Pioneer Press and Minnesota Public Radio
have featured stories on Odell’s work using story to bridge personal, racial and cultural
differences. He has appeared on radio and TV across the country and The View from
Delphi was the spring selection for “Talking Volumes,” the joint book club of Minnesota
Public Radio and the Loft Literary Center.
Please join us on Saturday, April 30 at the North Oaks Country Club, 54 E Oaks Road,
North Oaks, to enjoy delicious fare and hear this fascinating author. Social hour begins at
11 a.m. and the program/lunch starts at 12 p.m.

This 5K Walk/Run is a fundraiser for the 2016 Summer Reading Program sponsored by the Friends of the Ramsey
County Libraries.
The Summer Reading program at Ramsey County Library keeps children engaged in learning between school years.
Last summer 7,294 children and teens participated in the Summer Reading Program at the libraries located in
Maplewood, Mounds View, New Brighton, North St. Paul, Roseville, Shoreview and White Bear Lake.
Being out of school for three months often halts academic progress. This program is one way that children can avoid
this pitfall and, in some cases, actually increase their reading ability.
We greatly appreciate your support for this important program by participating in this event. Additional donations are
also appreciated. Thank you very much!

White Bear Lake Capital
Campaign Success
7th Annual Book It!
5K Walk/Run
Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m.
RCL - Roseville
Calling all
runners, walkers,
strollers,
volunteers and
library lovers!
The Friends
will sponsor the
seventh annual
Book It! 5K
Walk/Run at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 21
at the library in Roseville. Proceeds will
support the Summer Reading Program for
children and teens at all Ramsey County
libraries. A registration form is enclosed or
you can register online at www.active.com.
We also need lots of volunteers of all ages
for this event. If you can help, please
contact the Friends.
Thanks to the support from so many
generous library patrons, families,
businesses, civic organizations,
foundations and enthusiastic volunteers,
the Capital Campaign for the library in
White Bear Lake closed in December after
raising $237,450! Those funds made it
possible to add the amenities that make
the library a warm, welcoming educational
space for patrons of all ages. These include
the fireplace, sliding glass room divider,
additions to the lending collection,
technology, interactive children’s
equipment, specialized furnishings,
outdoor reading gardens and many pieces
of art. The remodeled library has attracted
more young families, children, teens
and adults, and is a popular community
gathering space.
Leave a Legacy of Literacy
Most of us want to be remembered as
someone who made a difference, both
in life and after we are gone. We hope to
leave a legacy for the lives that follow ours.
Legacy gifts enable the Friends to continue
to provide vital financial support for the
public libraries in suburban Ramsey
County. You can leave money to your
family and to the charitable organizations
of your choice. It’s easy to do. If you are
considering a legacy gift we hope you will
include the Friends of the Ramsey County
Libraries. Our tax EIN is 41-1597085. For
more information, contact the Friends.
Memberships
The Friends of the Ramsey County
Libraries accepts donations from people
who want to express their appreciation
for all the wonderful resources provided
by Ramsey County Library. We are the
nonprofit organization that turns tax
deductible donations into value-added
projects and programs in response to the
unmet needs our public libraries have.
You can support our work by becoming a
member of the Friends.
Can You Help?
Volunteers are needed to help stock the
shelves with books, DVDs and CDs in
the Friends Bookstore at the library in
Maplewood. Training is provided and the
schedule is flexible.
The Friends are able to accomplish
amazing things in support of our
public libraries but rely on hundreds of
enthusiastic volunteers to do so. If you can
volunteer a couple hours a week or a year,
please contact the Friends.
