Bookawocky: A Celebration of Summer Reading Children's Summer Reading Program June 9 - August 12, 2012 Parent Resources Studies show that one of the best activities a parent can do is read with their child. Reading together strengthens the parent/child relationship, promotes academic success and develops communication skills. While the act of reading is important, what parents read to their children is just as important. Tami Lee, Selecting books with positive, accurate depictions of Children’s Librarian different cultures and ethnicities can help children be more comfortable with themselves and their communities. Books that depict a multitude of cultures allow children to develop an understanding of others, while giving affirmation to children of diverse backgrounds. Choosing books that show people from diverse backgrounds playing, working and problem-solving together help children understand that even despite differences, all people share common feelings, hopes and dreams. Ramsey County Library strives to offer a wide variety of materials that reflect the cultural diversity of our community. Your children’s librarian would be happy to help you find multicultural materials for your child, including book lists, picture books, music and electronic resources.
