As you watch the news this month, talk is
of early fall with school opening and football
games. Our first light touch of autumn is still
a bit away. September for us is our amazingly
cooled pool, the new high volume fans in
the Tiki Hut, or our fantastic river view from
air conditioned comfort. Over the past two
months a lot of terrific things have been going
on. First and foremost, a testimonial to a
wonderful club, resignations are the lowest in
several years and new friends to be are joining
at nearly three times the pace of last year. Be
sure to stop and introduce yourselves when you
see a pineapple flag.
A particular honor for me was Past
Commodore Jim Alderman offering me the
Commodore’s Oath of Office. The rest of our
2014-15 board have accepted their respective
responsibilities and have been hard at work for
two months now. Believe me when I tell you
that we each take spending your money very
seriously. It is both an honor and a daunting
task. Many of you have asked about the pool
bar project. A newly formed and appropriately
skilled House sub-committee has been hard
at work. We all know that success is in the

planning and the devil is in the details. This
beginning phase is where the group has its
collective nose to the grindstone. Although
activity abounds, you will not see dirt move until
next year.
We started this BYC year with the Big Bang.
I was chatting with a few new members who
asked where to sit to get close to the fireworks.
I told them that these are Harry Blenker
fireworks. The pyrotechnics are up close,
just look straight up and hold onto your hat.
We don’t spend millions but our fireworks
show just might be the best you will see. My
favorite thing about this evening every year is
not the bang, but the buzz. From anywhere
around the Club you hear the joyful sound
of a close community gathering. Friendship
and fellowship seem to flavor the air. It is a
mix of pleasant conversation and laughter,
punctuated by a mild concert of children
playing. I hope I never miss a Big Bang or
Harbor Lights at our Club.
Member’s boats are still spread from the
southern Caribbean to the northeast. Members
themselves have been all over the globe. Most
will be heading back home soon. I look forward
to sitting in the bar and hearing stories of travel
and exploration. In just one evening in August,
I listened to tales of Ecuador, Peru, France,
Italy, multiple Caribbean islands and a place
called Boston. My fishing buddies have now

returned from the Keys and Bahamas. I love
their stories, some of which may even be true.
Speaking of fishing, one of the three legs of the
Inaugural Florida West Coast Triple Crown
Billfish Series was hosted by our own Crosthwait
Tournament group. Headed this year by Joe
Kennedy, this perennial group of volunteers did
an outstanding job of showcasing our Club to
this gathering of blue water anglers. Large tuna,
dolphin, wahoo and swordfish hit the scales
delighting the crowd of spectators. One boat
released four billfish, completing a Super Grand
Slam that included a white marlin, blue marlin,
swordfish and sailfish. Anywhere in the world
that is a phenomenal day!
If you have lost that shaker of salt or don’t
know where you are going to go when the
volcano blows or you take the weather with you
everywhere you go, then you absolutely must be
at the Club on Saturday, September 13th. If you
do not know what I am talking about, you can
find the answer to this clue somewhere in this,
for the moment, nameless journal. The very
next weekend, the 19th thru 21st, we host the
32nd Annual Kick Off Regatta. The wall will be
lined four sailboats deep with yachts of all sizes
competing while having fun. I encourage you to
join the sailors Friday and Saturday evening and
enjoy a casual party atmosphere.

BYC Members Barbara and Greg Allard recently returned
from a trip in July to the Seychelles, a group of islands in
the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa. Total travel
time by air: 20 hours. Before their trip, they learned that
BYC Member Caroline Freeman is a native “Seychellois”.
Caroline was able to give them some excellent
background, including contact information for her
brother Eddie and his family who live in the Seychelles
full time and are members of the Seychelles Yacht Club.
Eddie, Anna and their cute little daughter Maia kindly
hosted Barbara and Greg for a very nice lunch at the club
- which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The Allards say that they received the warmest of
welcomes from a Yacht Club which is 9,300 miles from
the BYC. That’s reciprocity!

Kitchen Kibitzing
Our Kitchen is all bright and shiny. It has been painted a nice bright white
color. Gone are the last vestiges of Chef Carl from the mid-2000s. Carl was a little
flamboyant, and loved the warm orange color he painted the kitchen. Ken always
threatened to put a blue strip in there, but that is a tale for another day. Your culinary
team laid down their knives and picked up paint brushes during shutdown. Most of
the paint made it onto the walls, what a difference!
We are reworking the menu again for the fall. Keep an eye out for the new items.
This will help keep the items fresh and interesting and gives us a chance to use seasonal
ingredients to your advantage. We will also be tagging all of the food that is Gluten
Free with a “GF”. This is happening on our special menus, too. We hope this helps!

Around Your Club
Welcome back from our brief shut down! If you haven’t been by the Club
since we reopened, here is a brief overview of our projects. We renovated
the central offices to accommodate 4 people with a dedicated Membership
area. We have upgraded all of the window treatments in the Lounge,
Burgee and Main Dining Room. We replaced the 2 large screen televisions
in the lounge. We renovated the lobby lay out to help with traffic flow and
create a more inviting entrance into our Membership Area. We painted the
entire kitchen and touched up where we needed around the Club. And, we
deep cleaned and fluffed all of the nooks and crannies to get our Clubhouse
ready for another great season!
As summer draws to a close and kids go back to school, we are busy
planning events for the months to come. Our new Committee Chairs have
all had at least one meeting with their new Committees and I am excited
that they are all raring to go with new ideas. Our two term Committee
Chairs are hitting the ground running, too. Everybody has new ideas and
positive attitudes. You, the BYC Member, will benefit from all of their
efforts!
You will be receiving an Operating Survey in the mail with your monthly
bill. Please take a moment and go through the Survey and answer the
questions to help us assess our operations. Your opinions matter. Please
help us celebrate our strengths and identify areas where we can use a little
polishing. Our team is very interested in your constructive comments. After

Lastly, I would like to talk about “Club”! Bradenton Yacht Club is a
Club. It is a place where likeminded people who share common interests
can gather and interact. There is a “Culture” to our Club. It is that which
appeals to individuals and enhances the common interests, and I think our
Culture can be summed up as “Fun”. That is the intangible that we, the
BYC Team, attempt to inject into all of the common interests our members
share. Be it power boating, sail cruising, fishing, casual dining, fine dining,
our wine club, the pool, tennis, scuba, and on and on, we try to make the
Culture fun!
Clubs are also things that potential members make a decision to join
based on how they feel about the Club, the Culture, the value, and many
other aspects about how the Club affects them, or their “Me”. We, your
BYC Team, try to deliver to the “Me” every chance we get, but the odd
thing about a Club, once you make a decision to join for the “Me”, you
immediately become part of the “We”. As I started this piece on “Club”,
the Club is a place where likeminded people who share common interests
can gather and interact. Oft times “Me” things get in the way of “We”
things. Decisions are made based on the “We” because as a collective, the
“We” is the larger of the group. This is one of those things that keeps my
job interesting! How does management manage the “Club” to positively
impact the “We”, without minimizing the “Me”?
Broken down, the Club is made up of 535 individual members, give or
take, who all joined for their own prospective “Me” reasons. Sprinkle in
families and the BYC Team, and collectively “We” all make up the Club.
The management, committees, board members, and general team plan,
and execute operations for the Club to positively impact the whole, or as
much of the whole, being the “We”, as possible!
While it is never our intention to offend, to aggravate, and/or to
negatively impact BYC Members, we know this sometimes happens. We
ask that during these instances, members try to look at the big picture and
understand that sometimes what is good for the overall membership, may
not sit well for that moment, with the individual. The administrators of the
Club are always trying to satisfy and positively impact the Club as a whole!
The target is constantly moving and we thrive on the challenge of raising
our aim to hit the mark! – Ken

I am delighted to assume the Entertainment
Chair position at BYC. Since joining the
Club two years ago, we have met some of
best people Manatee County has to offer.
Having served last year on the Entertainment
Committee, I have experienced the leadership
and professionalism of Rena’ Doniger and am
pleased that she will remain onboard.
The Entertainment Committee’s role within
the Club is to provide members with fun and
creative events that encourage new and/
or stronger friendships and forge a bond of
“community” within our Club. The refreshing
thing about getting together at these events is
we will often see another “side” of a member.
Some people act differently when attending
the “Rolling Stones” than they would while
sporting a blue blazer and “seconding” a
motion. The good thing is that both the
serious and playful behavior is essential to
the function and success of our Club. Many
members own businesses or have careers
that are stressful and demanding on their
time. To experience a great meal, an adult
beverage, and be able to dance the night away
with friends can make the stress of the week
evaporate.
Now on to the upcoming year. We plan on
trying a few new events that are sure to delight
and also build upon some traditional activities
to make them even bigger and better. I would
encourage everyone to get involved whether
that means just showing up at an event or by
joining our Committee and serving your Club.
If you have an idea for an event, let one of our
Committee members know. We are not afraid
to try something new and creative. On our
JOURNEY this year, we plan to “Take It To
The Limit”; so hold on, because sometimes we
may be living “Life In The Fast Lane”. I am

Membership
The Club has a whole new crop of “pineapples” as
78 new members joined the BYC over the past year.
It has been a banner year for us with one of the
largest incoming groups of new members in some
time. Many thanks to all of you BYC Members
who recommended friends to join us, you are our
lifeblood. On top of this very positive number,
resignations were at an all time low with only 38
members leaving. When you attend the Club, the
dining areas should be filled with pineapples, so
please be sure to stop and welcome them.
To all new members please be sure to keep your
eye on the monthly calendar in our magazine. The
Membership Committee hosts cocktail parties
from time to time which give you an opportunity
to meet other new members and to ask questions
of committee members, board of directors and our
management. It has been exciting and rewarding to
see new members get involved and join committees
shortly after joining. Those folks will have no
problem meeting new people and making friends!
The Club provides interests for everyone. Don’t
hesitate to ask members how to get involved and
to learn about the various activities that the Club
offers. The next new member cocktail party will
be September 27 at 6:00 p.m. At that party we will

Power Fleet
First of all, thank you for your confidence in electing me your
Power Fleet Captain for the forthcoming year. I have been busy of
late planning the next two cruises. We are going to The Palm Island
Marina in September and the Clearwater Beach Municipal Marina
in October. The highlight (I hope) of the first cruise will be a “low
country boil” dinner party and the second cruise will be to attend the
Clearwater Jazz Festival scheduled that same weekend. Now with that
as background, my thinking going forward is to link the cruises with
scheduled events at our destinations or interesting places where there
are things to see and do. I recall a few suggestions from the Fleet for
future cruises and would welcome more of these as we go forward.
One is to cruise to St. Petersburg for the annual boat show the first
weekend in December; another was to cruise to Ybor City to meander
through the historic town. Both of these sound like fun; let me know
what you think.
I’m also going to borrow an idea from the Sail Cruising Fleet and ask
for volunteers to help me plan some of the cruises and fleet activities.
Since Gracia and I are fairly new members of BYC, it will take a while
to get to know “the pulse of the community”. More seasoned members
will certainly have a better handle on your preferences, on what will
work, and what’s a dud. I welcome your thoughts, and more-so,
your active help in making our Power Fleet flourish. Contact me at

Year Ends in Financial Breakeven
The Total Operating Income for the year was a slight loss of
about $3, 010. The tone was set early in the year with a larger loss
of members than expected and some empty slips in the Basin. The
Membership Committee did a yeoman’s job of adding more than the
budgeted members as the year went on, but that large initial revenue
loss dragged our revenue down for the whole year. There were some
other financial negatives, but overall the Club finished close to the
initial “Breakeven” budget.
Non-operating “Other” Income (which includes RCIF, Initiation
fees, earned interest and depreciation expense) came to $111,731.
Cash Balance --The 2013-14 Fiscal year ended with $1,492,670 in Cash,
including $921,251.01 in capital funds. Of that, $552,265 was in the RCIF Fund
in which $250,000 of said fund is committed to the Pool Bar Project.
Member Participation in Restaurant & Bar Income -- Averaged
80% with a high of 83.3% in March and an average spending of $131, topping
at $153 in May. This participation rate exceeded 2013 in 11 out 12 months. The
average for 2013 was 77%.
Outlook -- Since we had fewer than expected resignations (about 40) and
started with a higher base than budgeted for the 2014-15 Fiscal year, we have
high hopes of producing an Operating Income surplus this year. – Jack

Dock Talk
The summer weather patterns have been all over the place.
Sometimes rain in the morning, sometimes later in the afternoon, more
often than not, rain it would. Gone seem to be the days where you could
set your watch to the 4:00 p.m. thunderstorms! Rain in the morning
increases the humidity all day; at least when it rains in the afternoon,
there seems to be a cooling affect. Regardless, we dodge the showers the
best we can and get our rounds done as the weather permits.
The dock and maintenance team focused our time towards the end
of August on the shutdown. Painting, cleaning, fixing and grouting,
mix that all in with some fueling and pumping out, as the Long Wall
and fuel pumps did not really take a break, and we have had a very
busy summer so far.
Our ramp continues to be busier than ever, and we are maxing out
our truck and trailer parking on the weekends. There have been some
instances of boats and cars being blocked in due to the popularity
of this amenity. Please be courteous to your fellow members. Look

around before you park. Can your neighbors get out, is there room
for traffic to go around you, are you helping to maximize parking? If
everyone does a little, we can help make this an even more popular

As we exit summer and can see, if not feel, fall on the horizon, it is
time to think about booking your Holiday Parties! We still have some
dates available, but they are first come, first served. We will sell almost
every night in December, so don’t delay, give us a call ASAP. We will
help get you and your staff into the Holiday Spirit!
Likewise, don’t forget, we do a great job at Wedding Receptions,
Anniversary Parties, Birthdays, Showers, and just about any excuse you
can think of to have a party, we can take care of your needs! Bring us

Great Mates
As summer comes to a close, the Great Mates are busy planning
out our new year! We will kick off our year with a Great Mates
Reunion luncheon meeting on September 18th. We will honor all
Past Presidents and their Boards as well as all previous members
of the Great Mates who have invested valuable time and energy in
raising funds for the various charities over the years. This was a
great luncheon last year where we rekindled many old friendships
and made some great new ones. We hope you will join us at 11:30
for socializing and noon for lunch.
We are very excited to announce that the IRS has officially
determined that the Great Mates are exempt from Federal income
tax under section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code. This means
that the Great Mates are qualified to receive tax deductible bequests,
devises, transfers or gifts and is now considered a public charity.
In our pursuit to raise funds and award valuable scholarships to
students of Manatee County and other worthwhile charities and
events, your generous contributions will come with a tax free receipt.
Thank you to all of those whose hard work made this possible.
Jody Goldman has been busy organizing great speakers for our
upcoming night meetings for October and November. In October
Mr. David Pilston, CEO of Save our Seabirds whose mission is to
rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured birds, and to educate the
public about nature and environmental sustainability will speak.
In November, Lisa Hickey, Certified Master Naturalist from the
Agricultural Extension Center will talk about the wild coyotes in our
area. Who knew how urban living seems to suit them!
The Great Mates Gala is coming back! Please mark your calendars
for February 21st and look for updates in the BYC Magazine for
news about this exciting night. If you would like to join the Gala
Committee, please get with Keri Hockett.
We have missed seeing everyone over the summer and as you can
see, we have fun meetings and events planned. If you are new to
the Club, I hope you will join us at a meeting soon; enjoy the social
time, meet new friends and learn what the Great Mates are about.
Remember membership is a dollar, friendships made are

Racing - Regatta Pointe Yacht Club Summer Sailstice River Regatta
was held on Saturday, June 21. BYC was represented in this nineteen
boat fleet by Esconditas, Swamp Rabbit and LIL gringo. Kudos to
BYC junior Katie Freeley who did an excellent job in skippering LIL
gringo to a second place overall. Katie’s crew was Reid Winder, BYC
Sportfishing Fleet Captain Pat Bustle and
yours truly.
June 26th ended our Spring Racing
Series. In the non spin class, the Hocketts
racing Toasted Mostly won first place
while Tranquility raced by Steve Evans
tied for second place with Ariel owned by
Jody Abrams.
In the spinnaker (J24) class, LIL gringo
(yours truly) took first place by one point
over second place Black Star owned by
Franklin Yanamoto.
Racing seems to be beginning to draw
more interest. We have had a total of ten

Cruising - Let me introduce myself. I am Jim
Keller, the Sail Cruising Fleet Captain for this year.
I have been sailing since 1967, first in Michigan and
the North Channel until we moved Orion through
the Great Lakes, Erie Canal and Intra-Coastal
Waterway to Florida in 2005. We cruised in the
Chesapeake from the summer of 2006 until the end
of 2007.
The weekend of July 11th to 13th, we cruised

to Longboat Key Moorings again. This was a
combined power and sail cruise, which has proven popular. Fourteen boats
participated including: the Brown’s on Catalyst, the Herl’s on Options,
the Reeves’ on Bimini Twist, the Willis’ on Aqualibrium, the Dimitroff’s
on Dragonfly II, the Gorman’s on Odyssey, the Laber’s on Hegira, the
Wendt’s on Esconditas, the Hockett’s on Toasted Mostly, the Ciamaga’s
on Gracia, the Westbrook’s on Knot at Work, the Barr’s on Hazle, the
Ruggerio’s on Sea Ya, and the Keller’s on Orion.
After arrival mid-day Friday, most cruisers gathered in the pool to cool
off and catch up with each other. Friday night we had a potluck dinner
with grill your own entrée. The selection of foods is always broad and very
tasty. Many have expressed that this is their favorite part, as it is a time
we can socialize with each other and talk with multiple people. During the
day on Saturday, several people took advantage of the free shuttle to the
beautiful beach area, shopped at St. Armand’s or explored the second pool.
Of course, there were a few who did boat projects! Then Saturday night the
group had dinner at the Portofino restaurant on the marina grounds.
We hold monthly dinner meetings at the Club, usually the first
Wednesday of each month. Even though the dinner meeting is listed in the
Club calendar as Sail Cruising Fleet, all are welcome whether you have a sail
boat, power boat, or no boat. This is a time to connect with other members,
to hear about the upcoming cruises, and to enjoy a presentation about other
cruisers experiences.
Our next cruise is a Cruise-in to BYC for the Margaritaville Party. It will
be September 12th to 14th. Join us for a great time. Contact Steve and Keri
Hockett if you plan to attend.
The following month the cruise is to Marina Jack’s in Sarasota
October 17th to 19th. Mark and Lavonne Dimitroff are the cruise
captains for that one.
