On Memorial Day we reflect upon all those that have fallen in US wars to allow us to freely be members of a yacht club. Mother’s day is in May, which I have had an up close realization, is the hardest job in the world, and clearly deserves a day considering. There is a US day called “Lumpy Rug Day” celebrated on May 3rd. Kentucky Derby is this month, which is a good time gambling on horses you have never heard of and drinking mint juleps. Cinco de Mayo is on May 5th it took me 3 years of college level Spanish to realize the name was a date! Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of the Mexican victory against the French. Who knew? I just thought it was a Spanish beer special at college bars. William Seward, Governor of New York, was born in May and inked the purchase of Alaska in 1867 from Russia for 7.2 million dollars or 2 cents an acre. Now, that was foresight since we have learned they have a bit of “oil and gold in those hills”. First American settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, May 1607- thanks guys. Lewis and Clark began their adventures up the Missouri River in May 1804. They covered a lot of ground without much more than a backpack a canoe and VISION. Clara Barton founded what has become the American Red Cross in May, 1881 with a simple idea and strong support from a group of passionate ladies. Speaking of passionate ladies, The Great Mates, a special group of ladies from our Club, are undertaking the establishment of a not for profit which can be a daunting task. The BYC board has been given assurances by the Clubs financial auditor that this process will not affect our own tax- status in anyway. I personally support their ambitions 100% and believe this group of ladies would like to hear and see your support at their May 16th Great Mates luncheon. Some of the names mentioned from history most likely had a 2013 push of support as they went on their journey as well. BYC has many wonderful events in May that we can make our own history with two particularly special dates. The first is the 30th Annual Crosthwait Memorial Tournament. The Crosthwait tournament has continued to evolve over the years. The sportsmanship shown by anglers and changes in federal fishing regulation has led to a more environmentally conscious fisherman, which we can all appreciate. What has remained constant over time is the competitiveness of the anglers and the fun activities available for their families and friends during the event. This year’s weigh-in on May 19th is sure to be as spectacular as in the past. I hope to see you there! The second is the Clubs Annual Meeting, which will be held May 28th. If you are unable to attend please assign your proxy to another member who is up to speed on the matters being discussed. Your attendance or proxy is important to ensure we have a quorum and meaningful member involvement. If you have not already done so, I would hope you would suggest the Club to at least one of your friends. Our drive will last until the May Board Meeting, so this is your last opportunity to sponsor a friend and save them $500.00 off our Initiation Fee, and earn yourself a $500.00 credit. And remember, if we total 10 new full, regular members during this drive, one lucky new member sponsor will win free dues for the 2013-2014 fiscal year! Also, exciting news from the BYC Membership Department is the announcement of the “Legacy Membership” Category. Now all current BYC Members can have their children, and grandchildren join the Club for half off of their age specific Initiation Fees. This is a great opportunity that will be ongoing to bring your kids into the Club family, and get them supporting the club on their own! The Legacy Membership discount cannot be used in conjunction with any other specials, at any time. As we do every year about this time, we are changing up our wine list some. We are adding and subtracting wines, in an effort to keep the list fluid and attractive. We always have our eye out for diamonds in the rough that can really sell well, and sell for a reasonable price. As the BYC Sail Racers have switched their racing from Sunday afternoon to Thursday nights, we will help them and all of our members get a jump start on the weekend. The fuel dock will be open until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as it is light longer. Our Dock- master, Brent, or one of our dock hands will be here to help work with the sailors, so we plan to keep the fuel dock open too! You can beat the weekend rush, fuel up and get a bite to eat on Thursday nights. We know the price of fuel continues to go up, but rest assured, we try to stay $0.50 to $0.80 per gallon better than fuel distributors on the river, and local clubs aren’t even close to us in fuel prices. In addition to our special entertainment events, May 11th is Yacht Club night @ the Trop! Calling all Rays fans to go and see the Rays play! May also brings us the Crosthwait Memorial Fishing Tournament, the 17-19! Sorry, no Thursday night sailing on the 16th, due to Crosthwait set up. May 25, is an Eclectic Wine Dinner, and May 27th is our Memorial Day Celebration and BBQ Poolside! Our Annual Membership Meeting and Prime Rib Buffet is Tuesday, May 28th. Please follow the instructions carefully that come with your annual meeting information, as relates to proxy voting and deadlines. As we transition from spring to summer, this is a great time to refamiliarize yourself with the BYC Guest and Pool rules. They are in the back of the roster and on our website. The pool is for BYC Members and your guests, FCYC members and for visiting yachtsmen from the Yachting Club of America only. We ask that all of our members speak to their children, who are old enough to use the pool on their own, about their responsibilities, and possible repercussions, if they misuse their privileges. All BYC Members using the pool must have a membership card. We offer dependant cards in the office, for your children. As you might guess, our biggest concern is the safety and well being of all people using the pool. There are diving board rules that must be adhered to. This is a must; there will be very little tolerance for misuse of this amenity. We are one of the few clubs that has a diving board, and we do not want to see anyone get hurt. BYC Members’ children must have Dependent Cards, and they must have them on their person. We cannot keep up with the change in looks of all of the children as they grow, so we will be asking to see membership cards. While we do not want to, in an effort to minimize liability, we will be forced to send those kids without cards home. We have Guest Cards in the office. These cards are available for a guest of yours who you would like to use the Club in your absence. They are good for up to one week, and can be had for the same person two times per year. Your signature on the card guarantees their fun time here will be paid when you are billed, and that you will be responsible for their behavior. Use these cards wisely. • See you all around the Clubhouse! BYC General Membership Meeting Tuesday, May 28, 2013 Registration 6:00 p.m. Meeting starts @ 7:00 p.m. Early Bird Prime Rib Dinner: 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. • $16.99 + + The Kitchen will close at 6:30 p.m., and we will resume operations after the meeting! There will be plenty of Prime Rib, so if you can’t get here for the Early Bird, you can partake after the meeting! We will only be serving the Prime Rib Buffet tonight. In order to maintain basic standards of courtesy, our Club has some regulations so we can all enjoy our time there without offending others. Our staff should not be asked to police these policies of good etiquette. Please be responsible for your own and your guests’ dress and behavior. • BYC has a dress code? It’s online under Member Central, Club Policies, and in the Members Directory. Blue jeans, shorts, tank tops and similar very casual apparel are not allowed in the main dining room. Ask to be seated in the Burgee Room or go to the lounge or Tiki if you are dressed casually. Check with staff for special events location and dress code if you are unsure. Some themed events may allow more casual dress in the main dining room. • Smoking is not allowed in the clubhouse? As a courtesy to others please avoid the doors and other members dining, especially with children, if you light up outside or in the Tiki. Other tobacco products should remain outside the clubhouse as fellow members won’t appreciate you dipping or spitting. • Gentlemen are asked to remove their hats upon entering the clubhouse? There’s a reminder near the front door. • You should make reservations… even at the last minute? Head to the Tiki or lounge if you drop in and the staff can’t easily accommodate you. • Some yacht clubs have banned cell phone use in their clubs? Let’s avoid that by being considerate and using good judgment; step outside if you must take a call. • Dogs are allowed on the grounds and in the Tiki? They should be well behaved and you should pick up after them. Doggy sanitary stations are located throughout the grounds. • It’s a good idea to check in the mirror before you lounge outside in brief clothing? This is a family friendly Club. Ladies know this but, Guys, brief shorts with boxers, really? • Young swimmers should wear appropriate swimming diapers in the pool? Enough said. • The Manager is the go-to guy for Club or staff disappointments? He will look into the situation and get back to you, and you won’t build animosity or be chagrined when you learn “the rest of the story”. • “Join us for Yacht Club Night @ the Trop, to cheer on the Rays, as they battle the San Diego Padres, Sat. The inshore waters are warming up and so is the fishing! Great reports of trout, redfish, and snook are being reported. Fish are being caught in the normal places along the bushes, drops, ledges, edges, oyster beds and flats depending on the tide. My recommendation is to find the young kids and follow them. They know where the fish are! Timing offshore trips remains a game of opportunity as the spring winds blow up the seas. Gag grouper is still closed in State and Federal waters. Red grouper opened April 1 and should be hungry and chewing. Mangrove snapper are an easy prey beginning in 60 foot of water with the larger fish holding at 80 – 100 foot depths. Most trips can limit out by lunch. Cobia and small Kings are starting to show on and around bait pods along the beach and on deep water wrecks. They are a sure sign of spring! Jon, Jillian and Mark Murnane, I am definitely ready and desperate teamed up on this 40lb Cobia to pull on some fish. This event offers a unique twist on the typical yacht-racing venue. In this event the competitors decide which direction they will attack the racecourse. Clockwise or counterclockwise can make the difference between a first place win or limping home at the back of the fleet. The regatta participation grew this year from fifteen to twenty four entries over the 2012 event. The increase in participation was due to the fact that the event had been included in the Sarasota Bay Yachting Association’s Boat of the Year series and the fact that the entry cost to this regatta ($22.00) is the lowest of any other event on the circuit. First Place spinnaker was earned by PC Robert Armstrong in Mischief (fourth overall), Jeff Waldron steered Crescendo to a fourth place (seventh overall). PC Joe McClash steered Windcaller to a second in non spin while Mark Berte helming Swamp Rabbit earned a second place in the pocket cruiser division. We would like to thank our race officials Peter Robinson of Cortez Yacht Club and Chuck Goes of St. Petersburg Yacht Club for their second year of duty managing this event. We would also like to thank Tim Casey, son of Bill Casey for this professional quality photographs he took of the event. • During March our winter River series ended with the following results: CLASS Spinnaker PoSiTioN 1 2 3 Non Spinnaker 1 2 SkiPPER BoAT NAME John Izmirlian Jeff Walden Franklin Yamamoto Lil Gringo Crescendo Black Star Blaise Pierson Bob Klement Midnight Sun Special K Stay TUNED in JUNE for results of BYC's Ladies at the Helm Regatta •7 May 2013 SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY 1 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm What-A Burger hOUSE 5:30pm BASIn 7pm 6 BLooDY MARY BAR FUNDAY 10-2pm 12 13 Mother’s Day Brunch 11am 19 20 BLooDY MARY BAR FUNDAY 10-2pm WEiGH in 26 Club & Fuel Docks Closed on Mondays 5 27 BLooDY MARY BAR FUNDAY 10-2pm Get Fresh @The Tiki 3-6pm 7 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm RoTARY 11am BluePlate Tuesday - 2 for $20 EnTERTAInMEnT 6pm 14 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm What-A Burger MEMBERShIP 6pm SAIL CRUISInG FLEET DInnER 7:30pm 15 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm POWER FLEET DInnER 6pm GREAT MATES BOOK CLUB 6pm EXECUTIvE 6pm BOARD OF DIRECTORS 7pm BluePlate What-A Burger Tuesday - 2 for $20 21 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm RoTARY 11am BluePlate Tuesday - 2 for $20 USCGA 6:30pm LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm RoTARY 11am 28 Annual Meeting rEGiStrAtion 6Pm mEEtinG 7Pm 22 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm BRiDGE 6:45pm LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm Throwback Thursdays Free Appetizers & Drink Specials LOnG RAnGE 6pm SAIL RIvER RACE 6:30pm 9 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm BRiDGE 6:45pm Throwback Thursdays FInAnCE 6pm SAIL RIvER RACE 6:30pm What-A Burger 5:30pm LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm What-A Burger 5:30pm SATURDAY 4 Tres de Mayo Mariachi Madness 10 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm 11 Yacht Club Night Prime Rib bUFFEt $23.99 AT THE TROP Rob Satori iN THE LoUNGE 18 11:30-2pm LUNCH BUFFET BRiDGE 6:45pm 11:30-2pm GREAT MATES Seafood LUNCHEoN BUFFET $29.99++ 11:30pm Throwback Thursdays SAIL RIvER RACE 6:30pm 23 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm 29 FRIDAY 3 16 LUNCH BUFFET 17 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm RoTARY 11am MEMORIAL Prime5-9pm Rib DAY PARTY bUFFEt noon-6pm 8 THURSDAY 2 LUNCH BUFFET 11:30-2pm BRiDGE 6:45pm Throwback Thursdays SAIL RIvER RACE 6:30pm cAPtAin’S mtG. We have definitely been busy lately. Hopefully, you have had a chance to see the new utility pedestals in the basin. Seven electrical pedestals were recently replaced as a "pilot" project. We wanted to make certain we understood the depth of the work required and the cost of the work. We are very happy to report our success! We came in under budget and with a good understanding of the scope of work necessary to complete the total basin. We want to thank Dockmaster Brent Mitchell for completing much of the initial groundwork and saving the club a considerable amount of money. Likewise, our maintenance man and dock hand performed jobs outside of their normal scope. Their efforts helped deliver the project in a timely manner and as stated above, under budget. We would also like to thank our past Basin Committee for initial studies and quotes that made it easier to get this project started. Based on the work done to date, we have approval from the Board to move forward with updating the entire basin. I want to thank our current Basin Committee members for their input and contributions to improving the BYC Basin. Some of our accomplishments and improvements in the last few months include: • Construction of a new bicycle rack • Construction of a kayak rack located near the BYC Beach gate and available free of charge to members • Replacement of fuel hose reels • Revised the Basin move/wait list process • Placement of a mirror on the riverside sea wall to make leaving the basin safer and easier We hope you were able to join us at the annual Basin Breakfast on April 20th. As always, there was food, camaraderie, and discussions around Hurricane Preparedness. Now is the time to start thinking about your plan in the event that we find ourselves in that "cone of uncertainty". The Club has a comprehensive plan, but everyone, (whether in the Basin or not), should have a solid plan for securing your boating assets. • GARY ALDERMAN President [email protected] Is it time for a second opinion? 5225 SNEAD ISLAND ROAD, PALMETTO, FLORIDA 34221 (941) 722-2400 / FAX 722-9650 [email protected] ©2 2012 012 R Robert ob er t W W.. No other month begins or ends on the same day of the week as May in any year. The March cruise to Marina Jack’s in Sarasota had six boats attend for the Easter weekend. The following boats made the cruise: Mary’s Choice with Fred, Mary Smith and their daughter Pam, Bandit with PC Bill and Ruth Baker, Rowe Boat with Ron and Joyce Rowe, Aqualibrium with Rupe and Kathy Willis; Piece of Cake with Barry and Mo Sikes and Snowman with Ken and Jackie Sosville. Everyone arrived Power Fleet KEn SOSvILLE around noon or shortly thereafter. The cruises only problem was with Snowman, as the freshwater pump failed and I had to get a ride to West Marine late Friday afternoon from my daughter that works in Sarasota. Thank you, Rene. Barry Sikes plays a base guitar and has been known to help out other bands on occasion. As this was the case for Friday night, his wife Mo, Ron and Joyce Rowe went to listen to Barry play at the Five O’clock Club on Hillview Street. in south Sarasota. The rest of us found our own amusement around downtown Sarasota. Saturday everyone did their own thing with most going to the farmers market and/or the Arts and Craft shows downtown. Some people went bike riding while others walked the John Ringling Bridge. The Rowe’s, Baker’s and Sosville’s all went over to the O’Leary’s tiki bar for a late lunch. The Saturday night group dinner was at Two Senoritas on lower Main St. in downtown Sarasota. Seventeen people attended this group dinner. All the boaters were present along with land cruiser Jeff and Pat Poulson. The Rowe’s also had two guests with them. Do not forget the power fleet meetings are the second Tuesday of every month. Flambé by the Bay was well attended and the Club still stands! Due to threatening weather the event was moved inside. Thanks to all fishermen who brought their fresh catch for our Fresh Fish Sunday. Our Cuba to Puerto Rico dinner was unique and spicy. There are more ethnic flavors to come this month. Coinciding with First Friday we have our Tres de Mayo Party May 3, with Mariachi Madness! We will have a South of the Border Buffet and great drink specials. On May 31, enjoy Italian food at our Tuscan Buffet - Antipasti to Tiramisu! May 12th, is our Mother’s Day Buffet, one lucky Mom will win a two-toned diamond bracelet! • There is live music every Friday night in May, come on down. Scott is son of Mark Connor and Denise CabanillasConnor. A Palmetto High School graduate, he was active in ROTC there. He recently returned from service in Afghanistan where he was a Blackhawk mechanic keeping rescue and medivac missions going. Scott is currently in the US Army Reserves stationed in St. Petersburg-Clearwater. Thanks, Scott, for your service keeping us free. This Memorial Day, our thoughts go to those men and women who sacrificed for our country. Many are still serving in Afghanistan and other countries. • W W Great Mates BRITTAnY GUIDO It was the goal of this year’s Board and Great Mates membership to work towards transforming the Great Mates into a 501c3 charitable not for profit organization to continue the cycle of generous giving and volunteerism that our organization was founded on. In September of last year about 18 ladies came out to show support by voting for this process and although there have been bumps in the road, please know that we are moving ahead and this designation will transform the Great Mates and this community. You should be asking “What can I do?” It’s simple...I ask you all to get involved with Great Mates. We are opening up the membership of The Great Mates to include any and all •12 persons who feel passionate about giving within the club and our community. If you have any questions about what this all means for the Great Mates and the Club as a whole, I urge you to call me or any of my Board members, Nancy Schofield, Nancy Christian, Debra Hastings, Chris Harrington, or Sydney Shaurette. It’s not that different from what we have always done. I am very pleased to announce that the 2013-2014 Board of Directors has been slated and will be installed by the Great Mates Most Recent Past President, Sydney Shaurette, in May. Please come out to show your support to these ladies this month. It would mean a lot to them and to me. We plan to have the Scholarship W You shoul “What can d be asking It’s simpl I do?” you all to e...I ask with Great get involved Mates. Committee up and running and the Community Outreach Fundraiser will return next year! This means we really need your help. You don't have to take on a big position, we just need you to come around and show up. If you have never been to a Great Mates luncheon or event, I kindly ask you come and sit with me, have lunch, and listen to the great things we are doing. IT'S JUST LUNCH ladies and gents! • See you at Lunch! -Brittany Sail Cruising MARK BERTE’ We kicked off the first Friday in April with a “down to earth” wine tasting aimed at cruisers. Yes, you guessed it, we were sampling the popular boxed wines. The cardboard boxes are easy to store aboard, no glass and economical. Ken Nyhus and team set us up in the Gazebo with some cruiser friendly appetizers that we soon added to our galley recipes. On income tax weekend, Jack Gorman led a cruise to the Venice Yacht Club. It was a motoring experience with a wind on the nose, some seas building and rain threatening but Orion and Odyssey departed Friday April 12. Hegira wasn’t able to get out of the basin with the stiff southerly breeze and stayed behind. After seven hours of not- too-bad motoring, the fleet arrived, still rain free, at VYC. Cocktails ensued to ward off dehydration. That evening, Leslie and David Laber (Hegira) joined Jack and Nancy Gorman (Odyssey) and Pat and Jim Keller (Orion) for dinner at the wonderful Crow’s Nest main dining room. On Saturday the fleet was visited by Mark and Denise Berte’ for drinks at the Tiki bar and lunch downtown after a 10k race. At 6:30, Charles and Cricket Clifton on Cricket motored in after a sunny ride of only 6.5 hours. Then the fun began. Venice YC had a Memphis style dinner with an Elvis entertainer that put on a great 2-hour show. We danced to the tunes of our “childhood.” The ribs and fried green tomatoes were great, the peanut butter soup- not so much. Sunday was beautiful with nice winds from the South. Not good enough to sail offshore, but up the ICW, the brisk wind was from behind for a new record run for Odyssey of 6 hours club-to-club, including 6 bridges. Across Sarasota Bay speed regularly hit 7.5 knots when the tide was right. One note: the treacherous shallows at Jewfish Key on the ICW have been dredged and the channel now is about 10’ …when you can find it. The sailors landed at the BYC just after the “Ladies at the Helm” awards celebration. The afternoon wrapped up at the BYC Tiki bar where both cruising and racing war stories filled the air. Our next cruise is to Treasure Island Yacht Club May 25-27. The monthly Cruise Fleet dinner is May 8, 7:30, please call the Club for reservations. Our Entertainment Committee chaired by Janet Amar has provided us with many exciting events this past year. The Committee also held a successful Golf Tournament that raised funds to spend on equipment that the Club is in need of for more successful events. Jack Gorman’s Communications Committee has improved our magazine, website and presence on Social Media along with currently putting together a wonderful marketing strategy. Many thanks to that team who made all this happen this past year. Thanks to Mark Berte’ and our Membership Committee, we con- tinue to grow. I plan to keep up the momentum next year. Each member, new and existing, should have an excellent experience at our Club. Increased involvement and member satisfaction are high on my list of priorities and I have great expectations for our new Membership Committee to help with this. One of my goals is to enhance our facilities with a few changes and much needed maintenance. I will continue to work with the House Committee to address our facilities including roof maintenance, parking lot paving, with drainage and landscaping already anticipated. I will support the Basin Committee in finishing the basin electric system. Financial matters are my area of expertise so it will naturally be my “I hope to celebrate with old friends and make new ones as we start another wonderful year together at BYC. I look forward to serving you as your Commodore.” focus also. I can assure you our efforts and our assets will be managed properly and efficiently by our new Board. Our dedicated staff is part of the team to ensure our Club and its members enjoy the ultimate Club experience. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for May 28th and I anticipate seeing many of you there. The Change of Watch is June 29th and the Big Bang (fireworks) will be the very next night June 30. A band will be playing outside for your enjoyment. I hope to celebrate with old friends and make new ones as we start another wonderful year together at BYC. I look forward to serving you as your Commodore. • Craig Robson, President P.o. box 2489 • oneco, Fl 34264 4703 15th St. East • bradenton, Fl 34203 941-755-2850 • Fax: 941-727-5980 cell: 941-374-9560 www.superiorasphaltinc.net •14 Bradenton Yacht Club - FlAG oFFicErS nEW mEmbErS mAy 2013 EvAn GUiDo Commodore DEniSE cAbAnillAS Vice Commodore miKE rEEvES Rear Commodore #2553 Don & Theresa Wallace 6616 7th Ave. Blvd. NW Bradenton, FL 34209 ricK SHAUrEttE Past Commodore #2554 Harry & Leslie Perlet 2382 Landings Circle Bradenton, FL 34209 JoHn iZmirliAn Fleet Captain Sail KEn SoSvillE Fleet Captain Power rob yAriSH Fleet Captain Sportfishing Bradenton Yacht Club - DirEctorS & committEE cHAirS byc magazine JAcK GormAn Communications Director; Ad Sales [email protected] FrED SmitH Treasurer KAtHy-KAlitA HinDmAn Secretary DAviD KrUll House cHriS cAntolino Long Range Planning JAnEt AmAr Entertainment cricKEt cliFton Copy Editor [email protected] JAcQUE viEirA Art Director/Graphic Designer [email protected] JEAnnE rEEvES Web Master mArK bErtE’ Membership StEvE HocKEtt Basin byc b r idge club JAcK GormAn Communications PAt bUStlE Junior Director brittAny GUiDo Great Mates [email protected] March 14 First: Tom and Sylvia Gibson Second: Dave Tyler and Chris Grobaker Third: Dixie Keeney and Jeanne McNeill April 4 First: Bob and Linda Kelly Second: Newell and Mary Yaple Third: Dave Tyler and Chris Grobaker March 21 First: Dixie Keeney and Jeanne McNeill Second: Bob and Linda Kelly Third: Bob and Anna Beltz April 11 First: Newell and Mary Yaple Second: Bob and Anna Beltz Third: Eilene Pierson and Ruby Laudig March 28 First: Dave Tyler and Chris Grobaker Second: Newell and Mary Yaple Third: Bob and Anna Beltz If you are interested in playing Bridge, please join us on Thursday nights at 5:30 pm for dinner and 6:45 pm for Bridge.
