M AG A ZINE August 2016 “THE MUSIC OF NORTHERN IRELAND WITH EAMONN McCRYSTAL” Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. Celebrate a wide array of music composed and performed by the country’s artists, including popular songs from Van Morrison, Jimmy Kennedy and others, as well as haunting, traditional pieces. Extend the experience by donating to the AETN Foundation to receive tickets to see McCrystal live with Celtic Woman favorite, Chloe Agnew. See page 23 for ticket reservation details. A Magazine for the Supporters of the AETN Foundation From the Director Dear Friend and Fellow Donor, As we begin a new fiscal year, I hope you will join me in celebrating the fact that your financial support helped the AETN Foundation raise $2,443,243 for the fiscal year that just ended. That money will be used to purchase and produce the programming you will enjoy on AETN. Here is a sample of the great programming your support will make possible in the months ahead: • “Backroad Barns,” AETN’s newest local production premiering August 25 • “Masterpiece” has new seasons of “Poldark,” “Indian Summers” and “Home Fires” as well as Jenna Coleman starring in “Victoria” • “NOVA” brings you “School of the Future” and “Great Human Odyssey” • “Great Performances” presents “Hamilton’s America,” “Gypsy,” “Shakespeare Live” and “The Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses.” • “Live From Lincoln Center” brings you “Lang Lang’s New York Rhapsody” • “American Experience” brings you the story of Nikola Tesla plus a gripping documentary on the 1980 Titan II missile crisis in Damascus • “American Masters” spotlights television pioneer Norman Lear • “Nature” returns with “My Congo,” “Super Hummingbirds” and “The Giraffe Ark” • Ken Burns next great documentary is “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War” • A brand new adaptation of “Anne of Green Gables” • “Soundbreaking: Stories from the Cutting Edge of Recorded Music,” an 8-part series that takes an in-depth look at the art of music recording • “Call the Midwife” will have a brand new holiThe quality programming on AETN is underwritten in part by... day special plus new seasons of “Father Brown,” “Doctor Blake Mysteries” and “A Place to Call Home.” While we’d love to sit back and celebrate the successful fiscal year, there is no time to rest. The budget for Fiscal Year 2017 is $2,760,200. That is an ambitious goal, but one we must meet in order to continue to provide the complete schedule of programming on AETN. I am completely confident that our loyal, caring donors like you will rise to the challenge and help us meet our budget. The first membership campaign of the new fiscal year begins August 22. Whether you love drama, science, nature, music, documentaries, public affairs, how-to, British comedy, local productions or children’s programming, you know you can count on AETN for the best programming on television. I hope you’ll take a moment during the August membership campaign to support programming that educates, enriches and inspires. If you are one of the almost 4,500 Sustainers who give on a monthly basis by electronic bank draft or credit card, thank you! You provide a reliable stream of revenue we know we can count on each and every month. Knowing we can count on Sustainer revenue every month allows AETN to commit to new programing opportunities we would otherwise have to pass up. If you’ve not yet made the decision to become a Sustainer, now is the perfect time! It’s easier on your budget and eliminates the need to send you renewal reminders. Visit aetnfoundation. org or call 1-800-662-2386 to sign up today. Every time you turn on AETN, I hope you feel extra special knowing that you play an important part in making the programming you are enjoying possible. Without the support of our generous AETN family, AETN would not be able to provide the important service we do. Thank you for enriching the lives of Arkansans with your generous contributions. Exceptional Savings on Fine Home Decor Lake Village, AR • 800.732.3722 Sincerely, Mona Dixon Chief Operating Officer AETN Foundation AETN Productions “Cooking on the Wild Side” Phyllis Speer is stirring up everyone’s summer favorites. She starts off with Sam’s Larapin Barbecue Ribs, which includes recipes for a barbecue rub and sauce. The ribs are paired with two mouth watering side dishes, Smoked Corn Pudding and Three Bean Salad. Nothing completes a meal like a wonderful dessert. She finishes off with Donna’s Inside-Out Cake. “Cooking on the Wild Side” airs Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 6:30 p.m. “Exploring Arkansas” The term “plein air” is the painting of life in the open air out in nature. Artists from around the country recently gathered in Eureka Springs for the first Plein Air Festival. Bear Creek Lake is a pristine storybook setting located in the St. Francis National Forest north of Helena. The lake offers not only scenic views but also an abundance of great fishing for big bluegill, largemouth bass and catfish. The Sultana Mississippi River steamboat disaster April 27, 1865, near Marion, Arkansas, is called The Forgotten Tragedy. It is the greatest maritime disaster in U.S. history in which more people perished than on the Titanic. When an “addition” was added to Parachute Inn in Walnut Ridge in 2005, the restaurant took on a whole new dining experience – tray tables are down in this Boeing 737 jetliner. “Exploring Arkansas” airs Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 6:30 p.m. “Young Arkansans Ask: Governor Asa Hutchinson” Gov. Asa Hutchinson visits with the students at Arkansas Governor’s School to answer their questions on state issues. Arkansas Governor’s School is a six-week gifted and talented summer program for upcoming seniors from high schools across Arkansas. The program is held at Hendrix College in Conway. “Young Arkansans Ask: Governor Asa Hutchinson” airs Thursday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. “Agri Arkansas” In August, “Agri Arkansas” takes a look at new technology in agriculture. From GPS technology to drones, recent advances in cutting edge tech have found their way into the fields and farms all across Arkansas. “Agri Arkansas” airs Sunday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. “Video Vault” As AETN celebrates 50 years, take a look back at some of the programs that have helped the network educate, enrich and inspire. Featured in August is “The Edge of Conflict,” which originally aired in 1994. This 90- minute documentary tells the story of Arkansas in the Civil War. Using photographs and present-day images from significant sites around the state, combined with the words of historians and people who lived and fought here during the war, the program attempts to help Arkansans recover a neglected history and to remember that even today, the war is still around us. “The Edge of Conflict” airs in three parts Thursdays, Aug. 4, 11 and 18, at 6:30 each night. 3 Giving Reminisce with us over the best loved drama in PBS history, “Downton Abbey.” Relive treasured moments, and savor clips, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews in “I Miss Downton Abbey” Sunday, Aug. 28, at 8 p.m. Then, join us for “Inside Poldark,” a behind-the-scenes look at the swashbuckling adaptation of the hit 1970s series “Poldark on Masterpiece,” before the anticipated arrival of Season 2 this fall. Airs Sunday, Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. How to Provide for Your Loved Ones and Avoid Unnecessary Taxes Americans own several trillions of dollars of wealth in the form retirement assets. Congress never meant for these plans to be passed on to heirs. These assets are considered “Income in Respect of Decedent or IRD.” Someone has to pay the tax on these assets. By leaving them to someone other than your spouse, you can subject your heirs to significant taxes on the inheritance of these retirement assets: Charitable Bequest — You can provide for your loved ones and the causes you care about while avoiding unnecessary taxes. Qualified pension plans Profit sharing plans 401(k)s SEP 403(b) tax sheltered annuities Stock option plans Keoghs IRAs IRA Charitable Rollover — Consider naming the AETN Foundation as the beneficiary of your IRD assets while leaving your cash and other investment assets to your heirs. If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can make a gift of up to $100,000 from your IRA this year to help support AETN programs and services. Charitable Remainder Trust — Funding a CRT with your IRA For more information, contact Karen Cooper at 1-800-662-2386 or legacygifts@aetn. org, or visit legacy. aetnfoundation.org. or other IRD assets as part of your estate plan can help you provide for your heirs and lessen their tax burden.
