Monday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m.
This month join host Chuck Dovish as
he treks to the Boston Mountains Scenic
Loop on Highway 71 and Interstate 540,
which connect Alma and Fayetteville.
These scenic roads traverse some of the
highest plateaus in the Ozarks. In the
second segment, Dovish introduces
Arkansans to two species of woodland

found nowhere else on earth. The last
segment features the Jewel Moore Nature
Reserve on the University of Central
Arkansas campus in Conway, which
provides a 19-acre outdoor classroom for
thousands of students.

resumes its story of love and intrigue at an English
country estate, now mobilized for the trauma of
World War I. The international hit, written by Julian

McGovern and Hugh Bonneville, as well as a
drawing room full of new actors portraying the
loves, feuds and sacrifices of the intertwined lives

From the Director
Dear Members:
June has arrived, and with it comes another
Arkansas summer – the great outdoors, grilling on the patio, lots of sun, heat and humidity. It also brings to an end another fiscal year
for AETN.
There have been more outstanding programs
coming from PBS (“Downton Abbey,” etc.)
and your state network (“Clean Lines, Open
Spaces,” to name one of many).
Our educational services, in partnership with
the Arkansas Department of Education, have
experienced an explosion of growth. Last year,
we did a handful of live interactive training
sessions, but in 2012 we estimate nearly
80! We debuted the AETN/PBS Learning Media service providing resources and
lessons directly to Arkansans, and this spring
launched a new online service – Next Avenue
– designed for the 50+ crowd.
Add in outreach efforts around the state
with PBS characters and our new permanent
space in the awesome Museum of Discovery
in Little Rock, and you’ll see an impressive
amount of activity this past fiscal year.
All this activity comes through hard work and
continued support from many sources, but at
the heart of it all – especially for the securing
of programs – are contributions from viewers
like you. Costs continue to rise for infrastructure and program rights even as our staff costs
remain flat. So we keep doing all we can and
with far fewer days of on-air pledging than the
average public media station.
4
With all this in mind, we do conduct a short
pledge drive this month and, in advance,
thank you for your ongoing support. Please
encourage friends who love AETN to consider helping us secure more great programming. Any new or renewed membership or
additional gift before the end of the fiscal year
(June 30) will be a tremendous help.
On another note, I want to remember some
important Arkansans this month.
June marks the 100th anniversary of the birth
of two legendary Arkansans – Winthrop
Rockefeller and Sid McMath. People help our
state grow and prosper, and these two former
governors are remembered well by so many.
I also take a moment to honor the great Levon
Helm, an Arkansan who brought joy through
his authentic roots music.
This is the first time in AETN’s history that we
move forward without the steadfast support,
love and leadership of Jane Krutz. To the very
end of her life, Jane was a strong voice urging
support for AETN and it programs and
services.
Thank you for your support, and I hope you
continue learning and growing with AETN.

AETN Mission Statement - The mission of the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) is to offer lifelong
learning opportunities to all Arkansans; to supply instructional programs to Arkansas’s schools; to provide programming
and services to improve and enhance the lives of Arkansas’s citizens; and to illuminate the culture and heritage of
Arkansas and the world. To accomplish this mission, AETN, through the creative use of telecommunications, will
present a high-quality public television service designed to inform, educate, motivate, entertain, enlighten and inspire.

“Shelter Me,” hosted by actress Katherine Heigl, is a family-friendly film
that celebrates the human-animal
bond with positive, uplifting stories
about shelter pets and their new
homes.
“Shelter Me” focuses on the success
stories to bring more people into
the shelters to give these incredible
animals a second chance. This film
shows how shelter pets are helping
our returning war veterans cope
with PTSD. We go inside a women’s
prison, where inmates train shelter
dogs to become service animals for
people with disabilities. We also see
the journey of two stray dogs, from
the day they are picked up on the
streets and brought to the shelter
until the day they become a beloved
family pet. “Shelter Me” is a show
about redemption, hope, helping
others and making a difference.
“Shelter Me” airs Sunday, June 17 at

“Alone in the Wilderness II”
Dr. Joseph Maroon
joins us live in the
studio, Wednesday,
June 6 at 7 p.m.
“Secrets of Longevity With Dr. Joseph
Maroon” airs Wednesday, June 6 at 7
p.m. with Dr. Maroon joining us live in
the studio during the broadcast.
In this, his first public television
pledge special, Dr. Joseph Maroon,
neurosurgeon and best-selling author,
explains how to unlock the power of
our genes to enable a long healthy
life. “It’s not the number of years in
your life that count, but the amount
of life in your years,” Dr. Maroon says.
“In this program I’m going to tell you
how to put more life – and quality –
into your years.” He also asserts “your
genes are not your fate!”
Dr. Maroon is an internationallyrecognized professor of neurosurgery,
26
author of “The Longevity Factor,”
team neurosurgeon to the Pittsburgh
Steelers, seven time Ironman triathlete, member of the National Fitness
Hall of Fame, and senior vice president of the American Academy of
Anti-Aging Medicine.
Secrets of Longevity shows how the
new science of epigenetics applies
to each of us and explores in detail
the four pillars that determine our
longevity: Nutrition & Supplements;
Exercise; Avoiding Environmental
Toxins; and Managing Stress. With
cutting-edge science and warm personal anecdotes Dr. Maroon provides
a road map to the long healthy life that
he says “is a gift within your reach.”
Dick Proenneke’s simple, yet profound
account of his 30 year adventure in the
remote Alaska wilderness continues in
this sequel to “Alone in the Wilderness”.
Watch through his eyes as he continues
to document with his 16mm wind-up
Bolex camera, capturing his own amazing craftsmanship, the stunning Alaskan
wildlife and scenery and even a visit
from his brother Ray (Jake). His epic
journey takes you on a vacation away
from the hustle and bustle of today’s
fast-paced society, and is a true breath of
fresh air. Three chances to watch in June,
Wed., June 6 at 9 p.m., Sun., June 10 at JOIN
11.pm. and Sun., June 17 at 1:30 p.m.

Lana McClain wins ‘Exploring Arkansas’
family outing
Lana McClain of Sherwood was randomly chosen
May 1 as winner of the family outing with “Exploring
Arkansas” host Chuck Dovish.
“We wanted to go on one of the ‘Exploring Arkansas’
adventures,” Lana said. “We watch it every Monday.
“We enjoy the nature episodes, like waterfowl,
canoeing, hiking and fishing.”
Lana and her husband Ed will be taking two of
their granddaughters, Kaitlyn, 11, and Allison,
7, to explore Arkansas with them. Dovish has
chosen Fort Rock Family Camp in Combs as
their destination.
Fort Rock Family Camp and Retreat Center is
a place for family restoration and enrichment.
Burrowed against the Ozark National Forest,
founders Terry and Roxanne Forsyth have
recreated an 1800s fort and old west town.
Families are invited to step back in time and slow
down while enjoying the beauty of the camp.
Some of the camp’s many activities are horseback
riding, a zip-line, hiking and archery, and more
are added each season. Additional information
about Fort Rock Family Camp and how to book
a family stay is available at www.fortrock.org.
“We are so excited about getting to go to Fort
Rock and sharing this adventure with two of our
grandchildren,” Lana said.
The outing will be filmed by an AETN
production crew, and segments may be used for
an upcoming episode of “Exploring Arkansas.”
