“We build the rainbow bridge
between the heavens and the
earth. Then we hold open the
door for people to walk through.
That is what any decent initiatory culture does. The shaman’s
are always the weirdo’s… Having studied Shamanism in many
cultures I know that. In some
Native American Tribes they
[Shamans] ride their horses
backwards.” - Deva Daricha

Resilience = Cope, Bounce Back & Go On!
Who‟s afraid of Holism?
Resilience is about coping,
bouncing back to balance and
improving coping capacities for
future stress.
Holistic understandings
are not new. The simplest
definition of Holistic
comes from Aristotle in
‘Metaphysics’: ―The whole
is greater than the sum
of the parts,” (350 BCE)
Mental Attitude counts for a lot
when it comes to resilience,
and few have more attitude and
resilience than veteran punkrocker, Henry Rollins:
Resilience is
about coping,
bouncing back to
balance and
improving coping
capacities for
future stress.

“If I listened to everything they
said to me I wouldn't be here.
If I took the time to bleed from
all the tiny little arrows shot my
way I wouldn't be here. The
ones who don't do anything are
the always the ones who try to
put you down...
It's time to align your body with

It's hero time!
It's time to align your body with
your mind.
It's time to shine! I’m talking to
you. Hero time starts right now. If
you think you've got 100 extra
years to mess around you're
wrong
This time is real. Your time is
now. It's hero time!
Hard times are getting harder.
The liars are acting strong.
You better get a grip on yourself.
Or you won't be around too long.
No such thing as spare time.
No such thing as free time.
No such thing as down time.
All you got is life time. Go!
I’ve got grace in times of friction.
I’ve got truth in times of fiction.
I’ve got no time for the hype.
Suicide? ... I'm not that type No
time for drug addiction. No time
for smoke and booze. Too strong
for a shortened life span.
I've got no time to lose.
Shine! (Henry Rollins, Rollins

And over a decade prior to that:.
‘Jealous cowards try to control.
Rise above, we’re gonna rise
above. They distort what we say.
Rise above, we’re gonna rise
above. Try and stop what we do.
Rise above, we’re gonna rise
above. When they can’t do it
themselves. Rise above, we’re
gonna rise above. We are tired
of your abuse. Try to stop us, it’s
no use...We’re born with a
chance. Rise above, we’re
gonna rise above. I am gonna
have my chance. Rise above!
we’re gonna rise above... (Henry

Yoga—Align your body with your mind “...Om…”
I went to yoga classes with
very bad scoliosis after my
friend’s suggestion. I had
never heard of yoga before.
I’d been to several doctors
about my condition, and had
some x-ray’s done. It didn’t
take long to realised that I
was knocking on the wrong
door. The advice was,
“Don’t lift anything and
when your back gets very
bad we will put you in a
wheel chair, in about 10
years.”
That was about 14 years ago.
I began Yoga 11 years ago
and after 3 years of committed practice, my teacher
Carole Baillargeon, examined my back and said
“There is not a sign of scoliosis!”
It was not easy to get there. I
was in a lot of pain for the
first year during yoga
classes. Things got better
with time. Yoga had worked
miracles in my life on physical and emotional levels .
Yoga stirred up a lot of my
emotions and “stuff” was
coming up. The more I was
releasing the healthier I become. The feeling of happiness became an almost daily
occurrence.
Now, yoga is part of my soul
and I will continue the practice for as long as I live. I am
forever grateful to my teachers Carole and Leisa from
Darwin Yoga Space. Thank
you ladies for being in my
life! - Beata Goodluck
Some commentators describe ‘Holistic’ as a
‘weazle word’ over-used
and covering too much
ground to be meaningful.
But health-care is ‘holistic’
when ‘transdisciplinary’
approaches to understanding the whole person
as a product of a variety of
systems, are implemented. Holism is something all social workers are
trained to appreciate, but
clearly struggle to realise
in some bureaucratic labyrinths.
A holistic approach does
not often lend itself to neat
categorical rhetoric and
challenges the limited one
and two dimensional explanatory models of the
modernist world order.
As the old edifices of the

are seeking to rebuild with
new cost-effective models.
The Australasian College

GPs & allied-health workers to treat causes of disease, not just symptoms.
It takes intelligence, commitment and focus to seek
to rectify the causes of
illness and not just mask
the symptoms.

Would you rather be right or be happy?
When
someone asks me
if I would rather be happy
or right I usually reply
that my preference is
“Both! Simultaneously!”
or “Neither!” or any combination! in fact I have no
preference really.
And ‘Right’ is a load of
bunk on stilts. ‘Happiness’
is equally a red herring
and one of my favourite
books right now is the
best selling self-help book
‘The Happiness Trap’ by meaning and purpose,
Aussie GP, Russ Harris
which is all about Acceptance and Commitment
Therapy (ACT), a well researched evidence based
Mindfulness based Cognitive Behavioural therapy.
ACT is more effective than
regular CBT. Harris and all
the ACT mob including
Steve Hayes point out that
once upon time not so
long ago fulfilment , from
prevailed over false egocentric notions of happiness that have become
the currency of today’s
cults of personality.
It comes down to definitions and of course none
of us believe that hedonic pleasure is the key
to lasting happiness, nor
accumulation of goods
and chattels, or...

Stress! Getting to the Heart of the Matter!
My favorite mega-stress
busting activity —next to
Yoga with Sanjit at Om
Yoga— is using my HeartMath computer assisted
bio-feedback system
working with heart-rate
variability for coherence.
HeartMath is a well researched system that supports scientifically what
Poets and everyone intuitively knows, that The
Heart has it’s own intelligence and Wisdom!
HeartMath's solutions for
stress relief have been
published in numerous
peer-reviewed journals
such as American Journal
of Cardiology, Stress
Medicine, Preventive Cardiology, Harvard Business
Review and Journal of
Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
The HeartMath System is
being used by Duke Medical Center, Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Blue
Cross Blue Shield, Sutter
Health, and many other
top medical centers around
the world.
