I found out on June 4 that he had a tumour near his heart. Asa was a rescue dog from the Cowichan Valley BCSPCA.He was only 9 months old. He had been shot in the jaw and was in terrible pain and starving to death. They raised the money for the operation to repair his jaw. We took him home to foster him during his recovery. Of course for me I knew how fostering would go. After three months of recovery we couldn't part with him and adopted him. He lived with us for 8 years. We named him Asa which is Hebrew for "The Healer" He spent his life comforting everyone who came into our home. That was his journey in life. It is so difficult to lose a Pet. The pain is so severe we sometimes say never again. Fortunately, with time the pain diminishes and we are ready to rescue another dog or cat. Every day at LAWS we rescue dogs and cats some who have been terribly abused as Asa was and some who have lost their families. This past year we had a record number, 1135 dogs and cats rescued at LAWS. We are thankful for the good people of Lanark County who take these hurt and scared animals into their hearts and homes. You have helped LAWS to be a "No Kill Shelter". Every single animal coming through our doors is helped until a new home can be found. We have kept some dogs and cats for over a year waiting for their <Continued on Pg. 3> LAWS is located on Glenview Road, off Highway 43 near Port Elmsley, about 2km west of Smiths Falls. 2 Mailing Address :: Lanark Animal Welfare Society P.O. If they are too injured to be helped our Shelter Manager goes with the animal to the Veterinarian to be euthanized. We make sure the animal has a friend there to hold him/her at the end. If the dog is so aggressive because of the treatment he has received from humans, we work with him through our Animal Behaviourist, to help him trust again. "Dexter" Why Adopt from a Shelter? Adult dogs are more mature! When you buy a dog from the pet store, they're all puppies. Some people forget that dogs don't always stay puppies. But adult dogs are just as great as, and sometimes even better than, puppies! When you adopt from a shelter, sometimes they're even already trained! You just saved a ton of work! "Bodene" 30 Our feral cats are also saved. We find kind farmers to take them into their barns, or some businesses who need help with mice control. They are all spayed/neutered, and vaccinated. The new guardians provide shelter, food and water. These cats live out their lives in a kind environment where they earn their way as "Working Cats" keeping the mice and rat population under control for their Guardians. a difficult year. The economy is not good, people are being laid off from their jobs, companies close. We continually need to raise more money if we wish to keep the shelter open and give the care we have been providing for the animals of Lanark County for the past 30 years. We get NO SUPPORT from either Provincial or Federal levels of government as other Charities do. This makes it very difficult to continually raise enough money every year, year in, year out. We are hoping you will continue to find it in your hearts to support LAWS. Every single penny counts. Being a No Kill Shelter costs a tremendous amount of money. We have to have staff to feed, clean, and care for all the animals needs. We have very high Veterinarian bills, since so many of these animals come to us injured, sick, full of worms, and fleas. All the normal bills, electricity, oil, laundry, building repairs are increased several times Thank you to the normal. We count on the people of people of Lanark Lanark County through donations, County. leaving us money in their wills, fundraising to provide the money to Asa ("The Healer") Judy Meyers keep the Shelter running. This has been Like Us on FACEBOOK We want to help LAWS with feeding & finding homes for our 4-legged friends. If you are a LAWS card member then this is an opportunity to help. As the Animal Welfare Advocate for Lanark County I'm realizing it's not always about cats and dogs. It's about helping all the animals in our county. In the past 4 months my days have been about rescuing a lonely old cow living in a garden shed. They've been about, transporting injured baby bunnies, turtles and birds to animal sanctuaries and have been about helping to release fostered racoons. I've filled the remainder of my days visiting the people of Lanark County and educating them on the proper and legal care of their animals. All have been willing to learn and at times, I find myself being the one that’s taught! It's give and take, with every visit I leave with a little more knowledge than when I first knocked on that door. I'm thankful for the cooperation I've received from the public and the understanding that I'm just here to help. This summer is sure to have a lot of memorable moments involving the animals and people of Lanark County! NEW! As human beings it seems we are the only species that actively destroys the very thing we need to survive - our planet. Our behaviour also has an impact on the other inhabitants of this planet. I am asking you to just consider for a moment how we can reduce or eliminate the harm we may unwittingly cause by allowing our pets to roam free outdoors. Leiya Hincke is a High School Student who made a presentation about LAWS and won a contest and presented LAWS with her donation of $165! Doreen Norris (80 years young lady...) YEARLY DONATION OF $200 Megan Fournier (10 yr old) Monetary Birthday gifts of $130 and many items from LAWS Wishlist. She asked her birthday invitees to bring in $ or items from the Wishlist in lieu of gifts for her! "Cole" LAWS has a couple of reasons to tip our hat to our local Pet Valu stores : 1) The Carleton Place, Almonte, Smiths Falls, and Perth stores held a PAW weekend, Pet Appreciation Weekend during the month of April. The Carleton Place Store’s caring staff - donated just over $1400 plus pet supplies ! The Perth Store’s awesome staff - donated almost $2200 plus pet supplies ! The Almonte Store’s giving staff - donated $835 plus pet supplies ! The Smiths Falls Store - donated $345 + food donations! 2) The aforementioned Pet Valu stores, plus the Kemptville Pet Valu, have become LAWS Satellite Adoption Sites for our many shelter cats needing homes! That’s right! You can now visit one of these stores and proceed with a complete adoption of a kitty in need, directly through the store. The same policies apply as if you were going through the shelter but… now you don’t need to. This is so wonderful that these kitties will be seen by so many people that may not have been able to come into the shelter. Since starting the satellite adoption centres in the Pet Valu stores this past April, 56 (yes that’s fifty-six!) kitties…have found forever homes! Thank you Pet Valu! 28 The domestic cat is the most numerous pet in North America. Unfortunately, cats kill many hundreds of millions of birds each year. Ground feeding and ground nesting birds and fledglings are at greatest risk. Birds at bird feeders are also easy prey. Cats often lurk in shrubbery near feeders and birdbaths awaiting a chance to pounce. Cats walk and run very smoothly when wearing a bell collar, they quickly learn to control their movements to prevent the bell from ringing. A recent study in the Journal of Ornithology shows the dramatic effects domestic cats can have on bird populations in urban and suburban areas. The study attached radio transmitters to fledglings and found that predators were responsible for nearly 80 percent of the bird deaths, and half of those predators were domestic cats. In areas with few cats the fledglings had survival rate of about 50 percent, while only 20 percent survived in areas with more cats. Some 10 million birds a day are estimated to between your pets and your planet By Eric Beere, LAWS Board Member be killed by free roaming domestic cats. That equates to about 40 transport truck loads of dead birds every day. Cats are not native to North America and the birds here have no natural defenses to them. Cats have an upper hand that nature did not give to them. Our dogs also must be supervised closely, especially at this time of year when birds and mammals are raising their young. Recently I thought I was doing the right thing by walking our dogs along the road instead of through the fields to avoid disturbing nests of birds and animals. Our Weimaraner headed into the ditch to do her business or so I thought - and returned to me holding a wild turkey egg. Despite my efforts, my dogs in the past have done harm to wildlife when I have not been paying enough attention, retrieving eggs, nesting birds, baby birds, baby rabbits and even a baby porcupine. Many dogs do not have the same kill instinct as cats but nevertheless their curiosity and play drive can be fatal to birds and animals. If our action or inaction is causing harm to any creature we are doing something wrong. There is always a better way, we just need to look for the answer. 5 In Rememberance "Elfy" In Loving Memeory Companion Animals remembered through memorial donations: Memoriums Gordon West Majorie Hughes Lyle Leeson John McCormick Betty McLean Herbert Chafe Ronald Joseph Kerr Glen Beaupre Phyllis Walker Margarete Fisher Julien Landriault Rolande Landriault William James Gerry Cooper Andrew Morrison Keith Farrar 6 Catherine McAllister - Casey Jessica Barron-Yazslani - Buck ANA Cosmo Frances & Charles Alexander - Spook Shelley O'Dell-HRH Olivia Angelica Barbara Dawson-Luke Estate of Foodsmiths Dog Wash Fun Fair 10th Year With almost 100 dogs in attendance! Bringing a foster pet into your home is often the first and most important step in giving the many animals at LAWS a new lease on life. It is very satisfying to see the animal’s personality come alive when placed in foster care. Often foster home residents aren’t ready for the lifelong commitment of a pet but are willing to help us with short-term placements. Some foster families want a playmate for their current pet but, again, are not sure they are ready for the responsibility of another permanent pet. If you are interested in another pet, fostering first gives you the opportunity to see how the foster pet will adjust and fit into your family while giving them time away from the shelter and to help let us get to know them on a more individual basis. Fostering gives families the best of both worlds – providing a pet with loving care and also fulfilling their need for another temporary companion. Because LAWS is a NO-KILL shelter, fostering allows us to help more animals in need by allowing space to help those in desperate need that may otherwise suffer a terrible fate. The qualified staff at LAWS will be sure to match you with the correct dog or kitty to match your family. The rewards of fostering are great and it’s very fulfilling to know you have made such a difference in the life of an animal. Foster homes provide LAWS animals with a loving, safe and responsible environment where they can thrive until placed in a lifelong home. Fostering is giving the best gift of all – the gift of life and a second chance. <Continued on Pg. 8> 26 7 <Continued from Pg. 7> If you’re interested in learning more about how to become a part of our foster program you may go to the website and print off a foster application (www.lanarkanimals.ca) You may also email me directly and I will forward your email to the right contact to further discuss the fostering program with you. Please contact us, we would love to visit with you! Pam Knowles LAWS Board member [email protected] "Teddy" FACTS: Myths & Facts -Pet overpopulation is at crisis levels in Ontario. -Each year, tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up on the streets, where they fall victim to negelct and abuse, or in shelters in search of new homes. -Spaying and neutering can reduce shelter intake and euthenasia. -Fixing your pet reduces health risks and improves behaviour in cats and dogs. "Viper" MYTHS: Fixing my pet will make him/her overweight... -Fixing your pet should not result in weight gain if your pet receives a healthy diet and sufficient exercise. Fixing my pet interferes with nature... -Domesticated dogs and cats are completely dependent on humans. It is our responsibility as their guardians to ensure that the number of companion animals born does not exceed the number of available homes. All animals have the right to have one litter... -Spaying a female cat or dog before she goes into heat even once will greatly reduce her risk of developing mammary, ovarian and uterine cancer. 8 25 THANKS TO ALL THOSE THAT PARTICIPATED IN MAKING THE FOLLOWING FUNDRAISERS A SUCCESS! $ $ $ Message from LAWS Board Member :: Liz Taylor Happy Summer to ALL! I have recently enrolled in an on-line leaning course which will lead me into a Fundraising Management Certificate. Fundraising is something I have always enjoyed doing and I am always looking for new ways to do it. With an overload of new learning, I decided I would note a few different ways that people can contribute: Types of Giving Helping others can be immensely satisfying. Studies have shown that giving of time or money also improves health and increases life expectancy. Cash contributions: paid by cheque, money order, credit card or cash itself are by far the most common kind of contribution. They are considered to have been made on the date they were mailed, hand-delivered or handed to the canvasser. Gifts-in-kind: are non-cash gifts and include securities, real estate and tangible property such as artwork, books, equipment, clothes and the like. The charity is entitled to keep and use the property or sell it for the proceeds. The tax credit rules for gifts-in-kind are governed by the same rules as for cash contributions. Appreciated property: Securities and real estate and perhaps tangible property, generally appreciate in value from the time they are acquired. Charities receiving contributions of appreciated property are deemed to have received proceeds equal to the fair market value on the date they are given. The tax implication of this should be determined by both the donor and the charity Bequests: An individual may designate a portion of their assets by bequest to benefit a charitable organization. Gifts by will are an increasingly important part of Canadian philanthropic traditions because they enable individuals to make significant gifts that they may not have been able to make while living. Bequests can take various forms. Gift annuities: The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency recognizes charities’ rights to issue annuities. If a charity is authorized to issue annuities, it will invest the principal contributed and pay the donor or another beneficiary a guaranteed fixed amount based on age. After the death of the beneficiaries, the remaining principal will be used by the charity for <Continued on Pg. 10> ::: Groundwaves Gift store in Perth: For the month of April if you made a donation you would get a percentage off an item. P.O. Box 89 Merrickville , Ontario K0G 1N0 613-269-4779 Serving the needs of both your small and large animals for over 35 years. An Older, Tired-looking Dog (AKA "The Visitor") An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out. Photo: Star Horn Photo: Star Horn the purposes set out in the annuity agreement. Many charities which do not issue annuities directly now utilize the "gift-plus-annuity" plan, in which the charity uses a portion of the amount transferred by the donor to purchase an annuity for him or her from a commercial insurance company. Charitable remainder trusts: Funded with cash, securities or real estate which is transferred irrevocably to a trustee, the charity or another entity capable of managing the trust, provides the donor with income according to the terms set out at the time the trust is established. The charity receives whatever remains in the trust after death or a specified period of years. Gifts of Life Insurance: A gift of a policy is appealing to a charity because it can count on a substantial future sum and, if necessary, borrow against the policy in the meantime. There are two ways to give. A charity can be made the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy. Premiums still owing are eligible for tax credit. Alternatively, a charity can be named as a beneficiary of a policy but the donor retains ownership. The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks. Curious I pinned a note to his collar: 'I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.' The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar: 'He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3. He's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?' 23 Why I volunteered to walk dogs at LAWS When I filled out the application, I wrote “to follow my heart”. That is true. I have not only gained immense fulfilment from helping my walking companions, but I have also met a bunch of very nice people. I could have said “in honour of my dog Boots”. That is also true. I often imagine her presence behind me as I walk down the road. There is a third reason. You will find it in Boots' obituary where I said: I'm not one to pray, but I did say a prayer one night. I said “Dear God, when I die, please put me to work in your kennels. I'm sure there are a million jillion puppy dogs who would love nothing better than to have a scratch behind the ear and get taken for a walk. And that's as close as I need to get to heaven”. My prayer was answered. So... I guess I can say I volunteered “for the practice”. Or, to be more practical, I could say that I volunteered “to find out what I had gotten myself into” ... just in case I needed to say another prayer! -Karen B. At the Lanark Animal Welfare Society, we are open to new ideas. Our shelter can proudly state that all animals that come into our care are given a fair chance at life because of who we are, of what we do and because of how we choose to do it. There are many reasons why these animals walk through our doors; some are strays that wander the streets, they might have run away, escaped the vigilant eye of their owners or were simply allowed to wander too far from home. When such animals come into our facility we first check for any sign of identification (dog tag, ID tags or microchip) that would allow us to trace the animal back to its owner. We then proceed to do a thorough body check, applying a flea treatment and administering de-worming medication. Particular attention is also given to the emotional state of the animal. If the animal is physically healthy and if its stress level permits, we then take a picture of the animal which will be posted on our website indicating the date that it was found as well as the location in which it was found. Some of these animals will be claimed and will know the joy of being reunited with their loved ones. Cases like these make our job as shelter staff very easy… However, it is not very often the case…. Some stray animals that are brought in are not so lucky. Some animals come in necessitating immediate veterinary care after being hit by a car, a mangled leg barely attached to the body; an eye ruptured by pellets or a body full of pellets from someone’s angry pellet gun; suffering from mange or flea dermatitis, with severe skin irritations, inflamed or infected skin with the absence of fur in large areas of the body; some are abandoned (owners who move on but leave their animal behind because they couldn’t/wouldn’t find a home for them) and are left to their own means to survive and consequently arrive to us as starvation and neglect cases; animals with severely matted fur that hinders the animal’s capacity to see, move or defecate; in some cases the matted fur, once removed, reveals putrid, necrotic skin, that is decaying slowly and causing extreme pain. <Continued on Pg. 12> Photo: Star Horn Rows of donated cat & dog collars hang waiting at the shelter. LANARK ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY A TRUE “NO-KILL” SHELTER ~ Supporting LAWS Our Municipal Partner for 25 Years 22 Save a Life Spay/Neuter and Licence your Pet 11 <Continued from Pg. 11> There are also very sad surrender situations… An owner passing away with no one available to care for his animal(s); a change in the health condition of an person who can no longer care for the animal; an animal whose behavior has “suddenly” changed (his/her caregiver has passed, a new baby in the family, a divorce or crisis situation) and can no longer remain in its family; a family releasing their beloved pet to us because of allergies; the puppy that was once cute has now grown into an adolescent dog that the family cannot handle… and the list goes on. Sometimes, cats and kittens are left in totes, in a pitiful state, overnight, at our shelter door. Sometimes dogs are abandoned, totally confused, tied to the fence. All these animals that find their way to us are in physical and/or emotional distress. At LAWS we do not believe that giving up on them is the solution… At LAWS, we have a very clear picture of which situations would warrant “Humane Euthanazia” for an animal: If an animal is clearly in distress and with absolutely no hope for survival or if it is beyond any medical help or treatment that we can offer, or if its condition severely impedes its quality of life, then and only then, will we choose to humanely euthanize an animal. At LAWS, we believe that every life is worth saving. At LAWS we will do what is humanly possible to do to save an animal’s life and to give it a second chance. We will not euthanize an animal simply because it is diabetic. We choose to re-home the animal with people who are willing and capable of caring for this special being. This could be a permanent home or a foster home. We will not euthanize an animal simply because it is old. We choose to find a caring home for the animal, a home that understands that old souls have a lot to give and to share and accepts to give it a nice comfortable place to retire. We will not euthanize an animal that has survived atrocities and which, because of these atrocities, is now deemed too “aggressive” or too “fearful” by some, as irrecuperable or unsalvageable. We choose to nourish this animal’s body, mind and soul until we see its true colours and until it learns to trust again. We choose to work on an individual basis with these animals, rehoming the “not-so well” socialized cats, that would not do well as pets, in the barns of respectful farmers that understand the nature of these felines. We choose to develop and implement Behaviour and Training Programs for the dogs with issues that have been mishandled, neglected and or abused. We then proceed to “match” each dog with a person, couple or family and we ensure that they are well suited to each other. We believe that compatibility between people and animal is the key to success stories. We will not euthanize an animal because it needs medical care. If the situation calls for an expensive treatment we will choose to rally and do some fundraising events to help alleviate the expenses. The animals find their way to us because they are in physical and/or emotional distress. At LAWS we do not believe that giving up on them is the solution, 12 <Continued on Pg. 13> <Continued from Pg. 20> :::“RED SOLO CUP PARTY” WITH AMBUSH NOVEMBER 9TH : Fundraiser for LAWS held at the Smiths Fall Civitan, who has generously donated the club for this event as well as we have received some generous donations from the community (Hinton Dodge in Perth, Healey Transportation as well as Eddy Laming from Laving Paving) Tickets are $25 each (19 years of age or older) and many local businesses will be selling tickets to this awesome event. They provide instant relief… and they are fat free, no less! Perhaps you’ll have a favourite; they come in every colour and size. Photos: Star Horn They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Siamese, Tortie, Grey or White, all with the most striking eyes. Tabbies, Persians, Orange, Black (and you will never put one back!) Longhaired, shorthaired, in-between, purring, soft and always clean. And then before you know it, your heart will surely melt. A life-long friend and companion is what you have been dealt. They will share your life, make it rich beyond compare, And they never touch chocolate, so you won’t have to share! Don't pity a shelter animal. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness by your side." 14 You can have cats and chocolate too, who could ask for anything more? So curl up with some ofboth and live happily, evermore! Come in and check out the many kitties just waiting for you to take them to their ‘fur’ever home! Maggie & Fiona Hello everyone! we would like to thank you for having Kansas in our lives. He is our little sunshine (both his furry brothers Dan and Calvin would agree with us!). He made our house his home within a few hours. He is playful and always so cuddly! We just love him! I have enclosed a picture of Kansas relaxing on the sofa! and another picture of Kansas and his brother Dan! Thank you so much! Your organization is doing an amazing work! Dave and Mel Thank you to the staff at LAWS for helping us find the newest members of our family. As you can see they have settled in just fine. They are both such good cats and they have made my girls very happy. Most friends were surprised to hear that we brought home two kittens at the same time, but when I see them playing with my children and with each other I know it was the right choice. From the moment we walk in the door until we go to bed at night they are right at our feet. Maggie and Fiona have made a wonderful addition to our family. Stacy Krahn Windy and Whisper "Bogey" 18 Kansas Hello everybody that took care of us at smiths falls windy and whisper here just letting you know we were adopted by great parents we both love our dad more then our mom but mom is kind and giving and let's us run around the house and sleep all day. Windy & Whisper (obviously Sens fans) Murray Patterson and Family 15 Domino Bert and Bruce We recently adopted Bert, a 7-month old black and white male. He absolutely adores his big brother Bruce, adopted from LAWS October 4, 2010. They are best buds and love to relax together, wrestle and otherwise annoy their sister, Alley Cat(adopted from LAWS in 2005) and big brother Buster Barr. He has certainly added spice and enjoyment to all of our lives. Welcome home little man! Donna Macrae Toby Hi All, On January 18th I adopted Seth, now Toby, from the shelter. He is quite a mushy dog and even my apprehensive room-mate has grown to love and adore him. Toby is a great dog and is learning his basic commands quickly. He has mastered sit and shake a paw. We are still working on down and stay, but I know he will have those mastered soon as well. He has become a real part of our little family. I want to thank everyone at LAWS for giving me this wonderful companion. Well Dommy loves his nightly walks, He loves cuddles and patting, he also loves playing catch, although he prefers you to work for the ball by making you fight him for it..lol. He has his own bed but prefers the couch. He has a friend, Foxy (foster) who he loves "fighting " with. He loves going out back although he HATES rain and hides in his dog house. I just know he is well loved and he returns that love. I can't imagine our lives with out him. Domino karen Tracy Lane Bert & Bruce Skidaddle Skid has made himself at home the instant we walked through the door. We picked him up on Saturday and has made friends with Darth and Tosca. Skid is very affectionate and quite vocal if he wants attention. We think he likes it here he seems happy. We will keep you updated. Thank You, John & Kym Chambers 16 RusticBenches.ca Check out our Pet Feeders! Tawny We adopted Tawny (who was called Biddy) back in June 2009. She would have been 3 in February. Sadly Tawny had to be put down as her heart murmur had gotten worse and her lungs were badly congested. She is greatly missed by our family but we also feel she had a wonderful life with us as she was spoiled with love and attention. She slept with me every night, I still look for her at my feet sometimes. Once we are ready we will back to LAWS to find a new cat for our family. Thank you for all you do for the animals.
