J ULY 24, 2016
From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...
MY DEAR FRIENDS,
We are in the grip of divisions in our own
country and of Islamic terrorism in the world, so
much hatred and fear! Let us offer fervent prayers for
the spreading of love all around us.
In today’s Gospel, Luke writes of the Christian
spirit of prayer. All r eligions have pr ayer s, ver y
proper and peculiar to their spiritual
outlook, and there is no wonder that the
disciples, who felt that they were a
special group—just like the Essenes—
would ask Jesus for a special Christian
prayer. It goes without saying that
prayer is communication with God.
The special characteristics of Jesus’
prayer are astounding to us. The most
incredible God-name-calling is the
tender term used by Jesus: “Abba = Father.” Actually, in
Hebrew, this term is better translated “Daddy”!
Unbelievable! Not the God Almighty and mysterious,
but a God whose tender love has made us His children,
sometimes loving, sometimes unruly, and rebellious
children, but forever His children, whom Daddy is
crazily in love with, forever and ever! Our Pope Francis
says: “...let our first word be ‘Father’.” This is the key to
prayer. Without speaking, without feeling this word,
praying is not possible.”
The second feature of the Christian prayer is
common to all religions, the glory and praise we must
give to the divinity. The Jewish expression “Name” has
a much more extensive connotation in the ancient
Semitic languages than in our English idiom, because
when there was little control (no I.D. cards, no post
offices, no computers, no telephones, no mass media,
etc., etc.) the only means of knowing someone by name
was to know an acquaintance who knew that person; the
only way to successfully approach anyone in antiquity
was to address that person by name. In ancient literature,
one finds the question: “How do you know my name?”
Even today we sometimes inquire about it when a
stranger approaches us. The vagrants around St.
Martha's pass the name of a priest from one to another to
fake church affiliation.
The third feature of our Christian prayer is the
coming of the Kingdom of Jesus, the King of Kings, on
His second coming; the transformation of this world, full of
hatred and injustices, into the new heaven and earth: Paradise!
The fourth feature is the total submission of our
wills to God, when we renew our Baptismal pledge to
seek God’s and not our own will.
The fifth feature is also a petition to obtain the
material necessities for our earthly existence, with an
accent on “Today,” which does not mean that we should
not use our brains to plan our future, but it is a
recommendation by Jesus to trust the Divine
P SALTER W EEK I
Providence and God’s plan in our lives, without
needless anxieties.
The sixth feature of our Christian prayer is the
fundamental Love (=God) that should also avoid the
spiritual and psychological anxieties that become hatred,
rejection and fixation on evil, all symbolized by our lack
of forgiveness. Unless we forgive our brothers and
sisters from the bottom of our hearts, we cannot hope to
be forgiven by God. Such spirit of forgiveness is the
most difficult grace to achieve. That is why the
following verse gives us the seventh mark of Christian
prayer; deliverance from trials, temptations, occasions of
sin, and falling into the grasp of the evil one (Devil). We
usually would not sin unless we are tempted by the
Devil: remember the kids’ claim “The devil made me do
it…!” We should ask not only for material goods, but we
must ask God to avoid troubles and trials in our
personal, family and civil lives, so we do not need to
forgive any offenders.
And, if we follow these principles, we have Jesus’
guarantee that our prayers will be answered, especially
the gifts of the Holy Spirit that make us strong
Christians, full of joy, strength and courage.
Friday is the Feast of St. Martha, who was the
sister of Mary of Bethany. We know only what we read
about her in the Gospel of Luke and John.
Whatever is said about her early life
comes to us from apocryphal writings,
which usually are no more than the work
of somebody’s imagination. We know
that she busied herself preparing a meal
for Jesus and his disciples, then went to
Jesus to complain that Mary did nothing
while she had to do all the housework. It
was at that time Jesus reminded her that
Mary had chosen “the best part.”
We see her again when, at the tomb of her brother,
Lazarus, she pronounced those profound words of faith
which have come into our funeral liturgy: “I know He
will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
Jesus told her: “I am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, though he should die, will
come to life; ...Do you believe this?” “Yes Lord,” she
replied, “I have come to believe that you are the Messiah,
the Son of God; he who is to come into the World.”
The devotees of St. Martha began being known
about the year 1200. Where or how she died we do not
know. Whether hers was a martyr’s death or a natural
one, we do not know. We do know that she is our
patroness from whom Jesus was like family, and
therefore, a powerful intercessor in the presence of God.
Because she took care of the hungry, the followers of
Jesus traditionally know her as the Patroness of
housewives, waiters, and waitresses. Let us follow her
example in caring for the homeless, poor and HIV
sufferers among us!
If we were up North where it can be cooler, on the
17 TH S UNDAY
patron’s feast we would probably be enjoying a bazaar
or a fair, but because of our sweltering heat, our
Patroness’ feast will be celebrated only in our hearts, in
our prayers, and in our recommitment to the needy. Let
us pray to her for the needs of the parish and for our own
personal needs, material and spiritual. The prayer to St.
Martha is as follows:
“St. Martha, I resort to thy protection and aid.
Comfort me in all my difficulties and through the great
favor thou didst enjoy when the Savior was lodged in
thy house, intercede for my family that we may always
hold God in our hearts, and that we may be provided
for all our necessities; I ask, St. Martha, to overcome all
difficulties as thou didst overcome the dragon at thy feet.”
This novena may be said for nine consecutive
Tuesdays with the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be
to the Father for the intentions of our Holy Father.
Sometimes I play phone tag with you my dear

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016
Over 140 pilgrims, chaperones, and priest, along with Bishop Frank Dewane are traveling to Krakow,
Poland from July 23 to August 2 to join Pope Francis for World Youth Day. May their trip bring them
closer to God and Holy Mother Church as they pray with thousands of youth from across the globe!
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL FOR WORLD YOUTH DAY
For the young pilgrims of the Diocese of Venice, their chaperones and the priests traveling to
World Youth Day 2016, that through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may they
journey safely as they join Pope Francis in Krakow, Poland, we pray to the Lord. For the young pilgrims of the
Diocese of Venice as they prepare to travel to Krakow, Poland for World Youth day, may they be open to the
power of the Holy Spirit, we pray to the Lord. For the young pilgrims of the Diocese of Venice, that through
the intercession of Saint John Paul II, Saint Faustina and Saint Maximilian Kolbe, this pilgrimage may bring
them into a closer relationship with God, and the whole Church, we pray to the Lord.
St. Martha Roman Catholic Church
When we pray the Our Father, as in the
Gospel today, we are defining ourselves
all as brothers and sisters of that same
Father. No longer can we exclude
any person from our love. Love is
indivisible. Hence, the unborn and the terminally ill
cannot be excluded from personhood, from prayer,
from protection, or from practical help.
ST. MARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL
At Bishop Nevins Academy
(Formally Dreams Are Free Catholic School)
In 2001 St. Martha Church opened its doors to a
new school for children with special needs, using the
second floor classrooms utilized for catechetical
studies. When Bishop Nevins Academy was
completed, Dreams are Free Catholic School was
transferred to the newly opened facility, and
established itself as one of the finest special needs
schools in the greater Sarasota area. On July 1, 2016
Dreams Are Free Catholic School’s name was
changed to St. Mary Catholic School. The name
change stems from their belief in the value to have a
name with strong Catholic identity.
St. Mary of Bethany is described as a spiritual
scholar, an effective evangelist and a grateful giver.
She was sister to Martha and Lazarus and known for
sitting peacefully at Christ’s feet, listening to His
teachings. You can see how fitting it is to have Saints
Martha and Mary of Bethany together on one campus
School Mission: St. Mary Catholic School
develops a strong foundation of faith, values and
education for students with special learning needs
while aspiring to challenge each student to achieve
their potential.
St. Mary Catholic School’s motto (FIRE)
represents the school, teachers and students...
Faithful to God,
I nspired to Serve,
R espectful of Others
E ngaged to Learn
Please pray for their continued success as an
important part of our Bishop Nevins Academy.

"The Christian way is not easy, but this is it.
To those who say, 'I don't feel like doing this,'
the response is 'if you don't feel like it, that's
your problem, but this is the Christian way.
This is the path that Jesus teaches us. The
reason to take the path of Jesus, which is mercy, is that
only with a merciful heart can we do all that the Lord
advises us, until the end. The Christian life is not a selfreflexive life but it comes outside of itself to give to
others: it is a gift, it is love, and love does not turn its
back on itself, it is not selfish: it gives itself!" -Pope Francis

seguir rezando.
