This collection is exclusively for the benefit of our retired priests, as well as, our active priests upon their retirement. May your generosity to this collection reflect your gratitude and love for our retired priests who have been dedicated and faithful to their priesthood over the years. Let’s not forget. “He said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none.’” (Luke 13:7) Are you like the barren fig tree? How will you respond when God asks you what you have done with all the gifts He has given you? Remember, not only are we called to be generous, we are called to develop and nurture our gifts and return with increase. Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need. February 21st , Winter collection— Campaign for Human Development $23,818.90 $ 5,397.00 COUNTING TEAM # 7—March 6th Folk Choir/Linda Mulyk MEDITATION FOR February 28, 2016 Every moment of our lives can be holy, as God is ever at work in our lives. Too many people think the experience Moses had was a once-in-a-lifetime event. The truth is that every moment is a holy moment, as God is always at work in our lives. The challenge is to continue to grow in our faith and love for the Lord, so that we may recognize the many and varied ways He is present with us. If we do this, we cooperate with the Lord’s grace and help build up His kingdom on earth. The first reading from Exodus recalls God revealing Himself and speaking to Moses from a burning bush in the desert. The second reading reminds us not to grumble like our ancestors in the desert did. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the fig tree and we learn that God offers us many chances to repent and bear fruit. The invitation was sent to twenty-five people and I was chosen because of my devotion to this Saint from Krakow. I was touched that His Eminence reached out to me to be part of this exciting new chapter. The Cardinal is personally going to present a special retreat on Saint John Paul II from his own experiences of living and working with this Saint. Unfortunately my niece is making her Confirmation on April 20, 2016 at Saint Mary of the Lakes in Medford, New Jersey, and I am her sponsor, so I had to decline the invitation. However, one door may close and the Lord opens another. I will be traveling to Krakow, Poland from May 4 (the feast of Saint Florian) until May 11, 2016. His Grace, Archbishop John J. Myers, the Archbishop of Newark, was invited by His Eminence Stanislaus Cardinal Dziwisz to bless the special “American Chapel” in the Saint John Paul II Shrine. This chapel is located in the upper Church of the newly built Shrine and contains the papal cassock that Pope John Paul II wore the day he was shot in Saint Peter’s Square on May 13, 1981. The Cardinal has a close relationship with Archbishop Myers and I was invited to attend this solemn dedication of the American chapel. You may remember the Cardinal’s visit to our parish on May 17, 2014 in honor of the canonization of Saint John Paul II and following the Mass we hosted a wonderful Polish dinner. Many of you made generous gifts towards the construction of the Saint John Paul II Shrine in Krakow. On the wall of the Chapel there will be a special plaque with the name of our parish. The Archbishop and Cardinal will dedicate the chapel on Saturday evening May 7th at a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving. On Sunday, May 8th, the traditional feast of Saint Stanislaus who’s body in enshrined in a special reliquary above the main altar of the Cathedral of Krakow, there will be a solemn procession through the streets of Krakow with all the Canons, His Grace Archbishop Myers, and Cardinal Dziwisz. As a Canon of St. Florian Basilica I will be taking part in the procession along with my brother and good friend the Very Reverend Canon Miroslaw Krol of St. Theresa’s parish in Linden. Pope Francis will be dedicating the Shrine of Saint John Paul II in July 2016 while attending World Youth Day in Krakow. Father Edmund Luciano and our seminarian will be attending World Youth Day along with other young adults from our Diocese. Since I will be attending this pilgrimage with Canon Krol, His Eminence has asked the President of the Canons of Saint Florian Basilica to convene a special meeting of the Canons followed by a grand dinner! This will be a joyous occasion to relive the wonderful memories of my installation that took place back in November. I look forward to spending time in prayer in the Basilica of Saint Florian where Father Karol Wojtyla ministered as a young priest! I also look forward to spending time relaxing with my brother priests, Father Manny and Father Gerald who will also be traveling with me. Upon my return I look forward to presiding over the Sacrament of Confirmation for our candidates on Friday, May 13th, the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. I don’t want you to think that I have lost my love for Rome so from June 28 to July 5, 2016, I will be in Rome to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of my friends Patricia and Mark Maher on June 29th, their actual anniversary. I married them on that date 25 years ago at Saint Michael’s Church in Union. The date of June 29th is significant because it is the Feast of Saint Peter and Paul and on this feast, Pope Francis will bestow the “pallium” to the new Archbishops of the world to show their unity with the Successor of Saint Peter. Through the kindness of the Prefect of the Papal Household we were able to obtain tickets to attend the Pallium Mass celebrated by Pope Francis. Father Edmund Luciano will be traveling with us and I was able to get us accommodations at the Domus Sanctae Marthae inside the Vatican where Pope Francis lives. I also arranged for Father Edmund to be the main celebrant for Mass at the Tomb of Saint Peter (the Clementine Chapel) on Saturday, July 2 (First Saturday dedicated to Our Lady), the Altar of Saint John Paul II on July 1st, which is the First Friday of the month and is a grace from Saint John Paul II for Father Edmund because of his great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Father Luciano will also be the main celebrant at the Altar of Saint John XXIII on Sunday, July 3. The Vatican has approved my request and has given special permission to celebrate Mass in the private chapel of the Immaculate Conception in Saint Peter’s Basilica on July 4th. To celebrate Mass in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is a grace since she is the patroness of the United States. So be assured of your remembrance in my prayers and Masses on my pilgrimage to Krakow in May and Rome in June! I remain, In the Peace of Christ, Very Reverend Canon Robert G. The volunteers, who meticulously go through the books to make sure there are no pages missing, no writing on any pages, etc. and to those who helped deliver the books, are wonderful and conscientious. From His Wounded Side We Were Born This is the time of year when we begin to look forward to warmer weather and spring vacations. It is also the time of year when we pause to see where we’ve been and where we should be going. It is the time to recommit ourselves to the Lord. During Lent, starting on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016, by the cross of St. Lucy you will notice a basket with decorated index cards. Listed on each card is a suggestion of a necessary item to be purchased for an organization that helps those in need. These items will be collected before all the weekend Masses on, February 27/28, and March 5/6. This is our way as a parish to reach out to others through “almsgiving”, one of the spiritual blessings of our Lenten journey. All donations need to be in by March 6. Anything received after that date will be given to our Food Pantry. As St. Theresa of Avila said: “We should not attach much value to what we have given God, since we shall receive for the little we have bestowed upon Him much more in this life and in the next.” CHRISM MASS MONDAY, MARCH 21, 2016 CATHEDRAL OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI, METUCHEN On Monday, March 21, 2016 Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. Saint Ambrose (340-398) began this custom—which we now call the Chrism Mass—in his Cathedral in Milan. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint the chest of infants and hands of adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge if their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in Metuchen at 7:30 pm. The following organizations are helped by your donations: Rape Crisis Center, St. Augustine Food Pantry, Catholic Charities Connection Program, Residents of Rosalie Hall, New Brunswick St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, South Brunswick Food Pantry, The Center for Great Expectations, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Somerset County, Residents of Kenmare High School. We Adore You O Christ and We Praise You, Because By Your Holy Cross You Have Redeemed the World RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM Re-registration forms were mailed on February 11, 2016. If you did not receive your packet, please call the Religious Education Office at 732-297-3011. NEW REGISTRATIONS—Please call the Religious Education Office to request a form for any new student. RCIA 2016 Whitney Wright—Elect Whitney will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil. Terri Dunfree—Candidate Terri is baptized Lutheran, and will be received into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church by making a Profession of Faith and receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. Ordel Taylor—Candidate Ordel is a baptized Catholic and will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion. Dear Father Bob, Thank you so much for donating money to help make my dream to go to Ecuador become a reality. It is because of your generosity that I just embarked on the most incredible journey in Arbolito, Ecuador through the Rostro de Cristo foundation. My experience here changed everything for me: the way I see things, how I want to live my life, my passion to grow further in my faith, to live more simply, and the desire to build more genuine relationships with the people around me. We never truly know God’s plan for us, and I felt that as I sat in a place I never thought I would come to, but knowing that God led me here. This week taught me to see God in all things. As I walked through sector 4 of Arbolito, surrounded by cane houses, dirt roads, children playing soccer on the rocky, dirt road without shoes, everything stopped and there I was, standing in the middle of poverty in its most raw form. It was breathtaking. It was a moment that stopped me in my tracks and made me ask myself questions. I’ll probably never know the answers to because I’m not sure if there are answers. It is impossible to summarize my week in a few sentences because there is no sentence that would do it justice. This week, I learned what it is like to live in poverty, living in the town exactly as they live and only living on 2 dollars a day to eat, just as they do. It changed my life and it ruined me for the good. I am going to tell everyone what I have seen and learned because we all need to work together to solve these injustices that people face every day. I am committing myself to serving others. To summarize my week I will say to you: this was the hardest thing I have ever done, but also the best thing. I cannot thank you enough for your generosity. You are in my prayers and my heart. Much Love and Gratitude, Emily Baumley Grace MERCY & Peace 2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal February 27-28 How do we, as Catholics know if our voting habits align with Church teachings and the Gospel message? And how can we come to better understand why we believe what we say we believe? For busy Catholics who want clear, concise and focused answers, the Diocese of Metuchen’s public policy newsletter, Faith in Action, is the answer. Your gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps to make this quarterly online publication available to all.
