Principal’s Message
First and foremost, I would like to extend our congratulations to our provincial
wrestlers. Brett Nelson finished with a Gold Medal, the first Campbell River male to
win since our own wrestling coach Mr. Murphy. Brett was an inspired wrestler this
year who exhibited sportsmanship, tenacity and a work ethic that has made him a
champion. Conlan Foy wrestled to an inspiring bronze medal despite fracturing a
bone in his ankle in an earlier match. We are also proud of Dawson McKay who
wrestled to a 5th place finish. Overall, our Timberline wrestlers powered us to an 8th
place finish as a team. This was an impressive group of athletes who did a
remarkable job of representing themselves and their school extremely well.
We had a number of parents take advantage of the opportunity to meet with
teachers on our March 4th interview day. Interim reports will be out March 14th and
as always, if you have any concerns or require additional information, staff are
happy to connect with you. Please feel free to call the school or email your son/
daughter’s teacher.
We had a parent meeting on February 25th to discuss the course selection process. A
reminder that our course selection booklet is available online and we are quickly
moving into building our timetable for next year. This process is extremely important
and we encourage you to connect with your children around their course requests
and plans for next year.
Spring Break is just around the corner (March 20th-March 30th). This is a great time
for all to rejuvenate and recharge. For those students with online or self-directed
courses, this can also be an excellent time to catch up on assignments or even get
ahead. For those students that are working on courses outside the timetable, we
hope you take advantage of some of the extra time to make sure you are in a
position to graduate. I have no doubt that once we return from Spring Break it will
be a sprint to the end of the year. With graduation just around the corner it is a
good time to remind our grade 12 students of ensuring all graduation requirements
(including the grad transitions booklet) are in order. Lastly, if an online course is
required for graduation registration, that course must be completed by March 31st in
order for it to qualify for graduation. Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Timberline’s Mission Statement
Our Mission Statement is truly intended to guide what we do every day:

Performances are on April 24, 25, 26 and May 1, 2, 3 at 7 pm.
Cost per ticket is $12 for students and seniors, $15 for adults.
(Special price of $10 for students for the April 24th performance only!)

Many of our students and staff are involved in this production.
It is not uncommon for shows to sell out so
don’t wait too long to purchase tickets!
BC Student Film Festival
Are you interested in the film making process including:
filming, editing, music composition, computer graphics
and acting? Then you might want to attend the BC
Student Film Festival that is happening at the Art
Institute in Vancouver. This event will take place on
May 22nd to 24th. You can attend workshops on topics
that interest you AND watch some award winning

Picking up and Dropping off students.
When picking up your student(s) after
school, particularly in the bottom parking lot, please find a legal spot to park
and wait. When too many cars wait in
the roadway, parents who are parked
legally and have picked up their child are
unable to leave, creating even more
traffic problems. It is also important that
the roadways are clear for the buses so
that pickup is efficient and safe. Thanks

this matter.
Parent Satisfaction Survey
Parents of grade 10 and 12 students are invited to
complete a provincial satisfaction survey online, which
takes only about 10 minutes. Below are two links that
will be active until the end of March. You must contact
Timberline at 250-923-9500 to receive the login number
needed to participate.

Spring is a Time for Gardening!
The Timberline Garden is undergoing a significant renovation this year. By the end of this growing season the garden
will supply students, staff, and the Foods program with fresh veggies, berries, herbs, and flowers. We have some keen
gardeners, but need some help! In particular, the garden is in need of donations of additional hand and garden tools,
llama manure, and strawberry starts. A work bee is planned for April. If there are any students or parents interested

Great big thanks to Marc McGraw of Quay West
for visiting Timberline’s Foods class to talk about
owning and operating a restaurant, food
inspiration, technique, and education. Students
were treated to a demonstration on knives and
some of Quay West’s own made-in-house
goodies. Students asked lots of questions and
thoroughly enjoyed the event. Whenever possible,
the foods program and students love to make
connections with those involved in the food and
hospitality industry. If you know of (or are)

Private College Career Fair
This year’s book is looking phenomenal! It
has been selected by our publisher as an
exemplary model for yearbook classes all
around North America. Tons of fabulous
pictures and the best Timberline memories
are immortalized in the pages. Books are
available for pre-order now in the office for
$50. Be sure to order your book before it’s
too late. The office accepts debit, charge
card, cheque, and cash!
Timberline will be hosting a private college fair
on March 18th from 10:20 am—12:20 pm in the
cafeteria. It will continue at Carihi for the afternoon with a public time from 3:30 - 5:00 pm.

Youth Ambassadors Program Exchange
We are reaching out to highly motivated students (15 to 18 yrs. of age) and
responsible adult mentors to encourage them to apply for a three-week exchange
in the United States. This opportunity, which is part of the Youth Ambassadors
Program, brings together high school students and adult mentors from Canada to promote mutual
understanding, increase leadership, and prepare youth to make a difference in their communities.
Through the engagement of local leaders and site visits, the exchange program will teach students and
adult participants about civic participation and about the rights of responsibilities of citizens in a
democracy. The Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada is an intensive program that takes place from
July 21 through August 10, 2014. There are three distinct elements to the program, carried out in Ottawa,
New York, and Washington. Youth Ambassadors will work to apply what they learn through community
service projects. All associated travel, meals, and accommodations are covered by the program, as is
health insurance. Applications are available in the counselling office and are due by April 11th .

SD 72’s international program is
looking for host families. Students
from overseas will be studying at
our schools and they'd love to stay
with a family. We will have a variety
of students coming to Campbell River from Germany, China, Taiwan, Austria, Spain, Brazil, Japan, and
Mexico. Most international students prefer to stay in families with children, especially children their
own age, but we also have students who prefer a quieter setting with adults only. We encourage all
families, with or without children, to get involved. Most homestays are for the full school year, but we
also have several that are one semester (five months) or shorter. Host parents are compensated $700
per month and are expected to provide:

Grade 12s: Post-Secondary Institution (PSI) Information
What happens in the application process?
After researching which program and school you would like to attend, the application process begins. In
universities, the program is offered by the FACULTY (ie. Anthropology Program/ Faculty of Social Sciences to earn
the Degree of Bachelor of Arts). After you APPLY to a post-secondary institution, you must wait for acceptance.
This could be CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE, meaning that the school wants to verify your future grades. After you
receive an acceptance letter, the institution will ask you to REGISTER for the courses you will take. If you want to
live on campus, you will need to apply for RESIDENCE as well.
How to research a college or university:
Use the internet, use promotional materials available in the counselling office, contact the undergraduate
advisors at colleges/universities and ask them questions directly.
 www.careercruising.com (Username: Timber, Password: Wolves) provides information about the
educational requirements for various careers for Canada and the U.S.
 www.educationplanner.ca provides information about the educational requirements for various careers and
on post-secondary institutions (PSI's) in BC.
 www.applyalberta.ca provides information on PSI’s in Alberta.
 www.ouac.ca provides information on PSI’s in Ontario.
 www.commonapp.org. provides information about 400+ post-secondary schools in the United States.
Remember—students must write the SAT exams to attend U.S. schools. (www.sat.collegeboard.org)
How to apply to a college or university:
 Review university/college websites for admission requirements --both general and program-specific,
application procedures, deadlines, and key dates for the post-secondary programs. Specialized programs
often have earlier deadlines.
 Apply online. If you are applying to ONLY ONE college or university, you can use their website. If you are
applying to several colleges or universities, it is easier to use the central application services.
 www.applybc.ca offers application to public post-secondary institutions (PSI's) in BC. PLEASE NOTE:
Because Simon Fraser University has become a NCAA Division II school, student athletes must register with
the NCAA Eligibility Center and write the SAT's. Please see the SFU website for details.
 For Alberta and Ontario universities, use the website listed above.
 Students and parents are responsible for checking directly with their post-secondary institutions to
verify requirements, key dates and deadlines. If you require clarification about the program or its
requirements, contact an academic advisor at the institution. If you require clarification about the
application process, contact an admissions officer at the institution. High School counsellors can provide
general guidance and information, but the institution is the best source of up to the minute information
about deadline changes and policies.
How to send your transcripts:
 The easiest way is to complete a Post-Secondary Institutions (PSI) Selections Form. This allows the BC
Ministry of Education to send transcripts electronically, as soon as updated, to several post-secondary
institutions at once. Complete the PSI form online via the Student Secure Web at www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/
tsw/tsw/student. Instructions on submitting the PSI Selection form is available at www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/
trx_updates.
 Alternatively, paper copies of transcripts can be ordered through our counselling secretary, Mrs.
Terreberry, in person or at 923-9500, ext. 2525.

PSI Information Continued……….
How to find Scholarships and Bursaries and other funding:
Basically, there are four ways to search for funding.
 The Timberline website is an excellent starting point to search for information. Go to the Timberline webpage,
click on Departments, then Counselling, and on the left side, go to Bursaries and Scholarships. There are
many links on this site to scholarship search engines, scholarship sites and post-secondary
institutions scholarship information. Scroll down to Scholarships by due dates.
 The Timberline counselling office posts Scholarship news outside of the counselling office on the bulletin
board. In addition, paper copies are kept in a file cabinet in the counselling office listed by the month of the
deadline.
 The Financial Aid Office of the post-secondary institution being considered.
 StudentAidBC (www.studentaidbc.ca) offers loans and bursaries to students in financial need.
Information is available at this website.
Note :
* SD 72 Scholarship application forms (based on grades, financial need and service) arrive in early May. One
application makes you eligible for many awards at various values.
*The Dogwood and District Authority Awards (based on grades in elective courses) arrive in early June. There
is one application to complete. Award is worth $1,000.
*Students who qualify with excellent grades, service and citizenship, will be automatically considered for the
Ministry of Education Passport to Education Awards.
To optimize your chances of getting a scholarship or bursary:
 Keep your grades as high as you can.
 Work toward having a well-rounded resume with service, leadership and citizenship activities as part of your
profile.
 Keep your resume up to date.
 Develop a comprehensive file of reference letters from people who know you well. Give the references
specific information about what you need the letter for, ample time to write it, and your resume to draw
information from if required.
 Have a 300-500 word essay about yourself prepared to tell why you are a good candidate for a scholarship or
bursary.
 Apply early. Do not leave your application until the last minute.
 Research as many possible sources for scholarships and bursaries as you can and apply for them. An hour or
two spent completing an application could be worth $1000.

Prom
Timberline is excited to be hosting it’s first ever prom for all 2014 graduates this year. This event will preceed the
traditional commencement/dry grad activities for students. The theme for this year’s prom and dry grad is
“enchanted forest,” as chosen by the student body.
The prom will take place June 14th (Saturday) at Strathcona Gardens. Each student on the grad list has 5 prom
tickets (including 1 for themselves) reserved under their name. Prom tickets are $35.00 each, which includes a buffet
dinner and dessert. We are selling prom tickets once a month at Timberline from room B204 and future dates will be
noted on the grad webpage at www.sd72.bc.ca/school/timberline/students/gradinformation. The next date for sales
is March 13th at lunchtime. If paying by cheque, please make them payable to Timberline Prom 2014.
Commencement/Dry Grad
The commencement ceremony is a formal cap and gown ceremony which will take place at Strathcona Gardens on
Thursday, June 26th. Students will purchase their own cap, gown and stole (Approximately $25.00) from the
Timberline office two weeks prior to grad. All school debts, textbooks, fees and library books must be settled before
cap and gown is released to the student. Ceremony tickets will go on sale at the Timberline office on June 1st, and
grads will NOT require a ticket. Scholarship and Bursary awards will also be integrated into the Commencement
event this year. More information will follow in the months ahead.
Dry Grad
The Dry Grad event is an all night, student centered activity night which follows the commencement ceremony.
The student cost for this event is $150.00. Students can offset the cost of their dry grad night by fundraising points
towards their fees. Please check the grad board to see how many points you have.
Grad Decorating Committee
The committee is continuing to collect various items for this year's Prom. White LED mini lights are always needed
(thank you to those parents who have already donated!) A call is going out for a parent to step forward to collect
various sized tree stumps. These need to be fairly large in diameter (20-30 inches) and range in height as well (1-2
feet). As June approaches, the committee is asking as well, for parents to lend various potted flower arrangements to
the committee to be used throughout the venue, in order to add some color to our Enchanted Forest theme. These
would need to be dropped off at the arena the day before Prom and picked up the morning after.

Lastly, the Decorating Committee is still seeking the help of a parent to head a committee for the design and
production of black curtains to cover the arena boards. This is a substantial project, requiring the expertise of
someone with sewing background, and will require more parent volunteers to sew. Again, please let Rebecca Hay
know if you are interested in leading this project.
Fundraising
Epicure: Delivery is March 14th.
Spring Baskets: Order forms available at the office. This is our second biggest fundraiser and a great
way to pay for your dry grad fees. Deadline is April 25th. Money is due at the time of the orders and
delivery date is May 7th at the school by 3:00 pm. (Mother’s Day is May 11th!)
Purdy’s chocolates: Order forms available at the office. Deadline is April 1st, Delivery is April 15/16
(in time for Easter!)
Bagging days: March 29/30 at Walmart. E-mail Rebecca Fahey at [email protected] if you wish to
participate.
The deadline for the last Grad Wear order has been extended to Monday, March 17th.
