This book presents an unparalleled selection of modernist images, which introduce a crucial moment in the history of photography when artists were beginning to use the camera and darkroom to redefine and transform visions of the modern world. Technological advancements gave artists the freedom to experiment and test the limits of the medium enabling new imaginings of portraits, nudes and still lifes; and street life and the modern world was captured from a new, uniquely modern perspective. 150 colour illustrations 290 x 218 mm 240 pp £40.00 • hb 9781849764063 £29.99 • pb 9781849764070 November 2016 2 Showcasing only original vintage prints by the artists themselves, the book features key figures from the 1920s to 1950s, such as Brassaï, André Kertész, Dorothea Lange, Tina Modotti, Man Ray, Edward Steichen and Alexander Rodchenko. Also includes a newly commissioned interview with Sir Elton John and essays on modernist photography and technology and innovation by Dawn Ades and Shoair Mavlian. Shoair Mavlian is Assistant Curator at Tate Modern. Simon Baker is Senior Curator, International Art (Photography) at Tate Modern. 3 Paul Nash NEW TITLES Edited by Emma Chambers Exhibition Tate Britain, London 26/10/16 – 05/03/17 A richly illustrated survey of one of the best-loved and distinctive British artists of the 20th century Paul Nash was a British surrealist painter as well as a photographer, writer and designer of applied art. He is also known for his work as an official war artist, producing some of the most memorable images of the First and Second World Wars, and as one of the most evocative landscape painters of his generation. 180 colour illustrations 265 x 210 mm 192 pp £35.00 • hb with jacket 9781849764353 £24.99 • pb with flaps 9781849764919 October 2016 4 Featuring works from across the four decades of his rich career, this book is the first to examine Nash’s work in an international context. While best known for his British landscapes, Nash was also a pioneer of modernism in Britain, promoting the avant-garde European styles of abstraction and surrealism in the 1920s and 1930s. Fully illustrated with beautifully reproduced works from Nash’s entire career, fresh scholarship and a wealth of archival material (some of it never before published), this is a timely survey of a significant artist. Emma Chambers is Curator of Modern British Art at Tate Britain. 5 Informal Beauty The Photographs of Paul Nash David Boyd Haycock Simon Grant Exhibition Exhibition Tate Britain, London 26/10/16 – 05/03/17 Tate Britain, London 26/10/16 – 05/03/17 Part of the bestselling British Artists series, this is a key introduction to a leading 20th century artist Exploring the photographic vision of one of Britain’s best-loved modernist artists As a painter, illustrator and critic, Paul Nash (1889–1946) was at the forefront of British art in the first half of the twentieth century. Inspired by Willam Blake, Samuel Palmer and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, he produced some of the greatest paintings of the First and Second World Wars. In the intervening years he helped introduce the British avantgarde to the thrilling potential of European modernism, experimenting with abstraction and helping to establish the Surrealist movement in Britain. For the first time in a generation, the world of Paul Nash’s photographs is revealed in this intimate new book. Best known for his evocative landscape paintings, Nash was also a consummate photographer, who believed that the camera could reveal aspects of the world that the painter could not. While they have long been known as a compositional tool for Nash’s paintings, this book reveals his black-and-white photographs as powerful and atmospheric works in their own right. In this thoughtful and comprehensive survey, David Boyd Haycock explores the full course of Nash’s eventful career, his profound love of the English landscape, and the psychological forces that led him to pursue a lifelong vision of flight. The recent digitisation of Nash’s extensive collection of photographs from the Tate Archive shows an artist whose subject matter, style and content was immensely varied and inventive. Including both little-known and previously unpublished photographs, and a highly informative contextual essay by author Simon Grant, Informal Beauty explores the experimental nature of Nash’s output and the intensity and power of his photographic vision. 100 duotone images 195 x 154 mm 144 pp 60 colour illustrations 246 x 189 mm 96 pp 6 NEW TITLES ART British Artists: Paul Nash £16.99 • hb 9781849764391 David Boyd Haycock is an art historian and curator whose books include the acclaimed A Crisis of Brilliance. £16.99 • real cloth with tipped-in image 9781849764407 October 2016 For more titles in the British Artists series, please see page 31 October 2016 Simon Grant is editor of TATE ETC magazine and co-editor of Picpus magazine. Turner The ‘Skies’ Sketchbook Edited by Tanya Barson NEW TITLES ART Georgia O’Keeffe Introduction by David Blayney Brown ‘A painter who does not make his skies a very material part of his composition – neglects to avail himself of one of his greatest aids and his chief organ of sentiment’ – J.M.W. Turner Exhibition Tate Modern, London 06/07/16 – 30/10/16 Kunstforum, Vienna 07/12/16 – 26/03/17 AGO, Toronto 22/04/17 – 30/07/17 300 colour illustrations 290 x 245 mm 272 pp £40.00 • hb 9781849763714 £29.99 • pb 9781849764032 July 2016 Once-in-a-generation publication on one of America’s most beloved and influential artists Beautifully reproduced edition of Turner’s studies of skies Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) was one of the foundational figures of American modernism. O’Keeffe rose to prominence as a painter in the early twentieth century at the heart of the New York avant-garde circle that centred around Alfred Stieglitz, who would become her husband. One of the most popular painters of all time, J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) created a remarkable collection of sketchbooks over the course of his career. The ‘Skies’ sketchbook takes its name from its many richly coloured sky studies. Most of the sketches in the book were presumably observed in England, but a few may have been seen in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. The dramatic consequences of the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815, darkening skies and reddening sunsets around the world, surely caught his attention. Turner’s more intenselycoloured studies may document these effects which lasted for over a year. Whilst many contemporary texts on O’Keeffe have focused on her relationship with Stieglitz or re-hashed familiar clichés, particularly about her paintings of flowers, this book brilliantly reassesses the artist’s place in the canon of twentieth-century art. Featuring essays from a new generation of scholars, O’Keeffe is revealed as a multifaceted artist who constantly experimented at the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Lavishly illustrated, and including rarely reproduced works and an illustrated chronology, this is the definitive book on one of the most significant and popular artists of modern times. 144 colour illustrations 135 x 257 mm 152 pp £16.99 • real cloth with tipped-in image 9781849764902 Tanya Barson is Curator of International Art at Tate Modern. Walks of Art in London has been put together for everyone curious about London and about the place of modern and contemporary art in it. It takes you on a walking tour of public works of art created by famous and by less well-known artists. It introduces you to places connected to art – museums and galleries housing great collections, public squares and parks, churches, secular buildings, and sometimes more hidden locations. And it includes some of the places where the artists lived, worked, studied and socialised. 29 2017 Diaries 2017 Calendars Exhibition: Robert Rauschenberg, Tate Modern 1 December 2016 – 2 April 2017 Publication June 2016 300 x 300 mm 12 colour illustrations ISBN 978 1 84976 479 7 £9.99 (inc.VAT) 30 Tate Pocket Diary 2017 Street Photography MERCHANDISE Robert Rauschenberg 2017 Calendar Black and white street photography.
