Holiday Open House - The Cat House on the Kings
Holiday Open House Our Holiday Boutique and Open House was blessed with spectacular weather and lots of people. Scores turned out to support the Cat House on the Kings and bid on the fabulous auction items. Long time supporters Eileen Stella is adopted at Open House Hardworking Tammy & Amanda Barker Lynea & the Moraga’s of Sacramento and Michael Romero came from Los Angeles to man the welcome table for the third year. Lucy Reynolds and Robin Springenberg stopped at Costco and loaded up with donations before driving down from the Bay Area. They have volunteered at several open houses and spent this one selling our Marmalady items. Terry Teeters and friend Kate came from San Jose for the day. Terry and Kate had a winning day, taking home not one, but two of the raffle baskets. Ramona Hackbart of Fairfield, CA was the lucky winner of our raffle quilt. Valley Public Television (KVPT-Ch. 18) came out to film and aired an episode of the event the following Wednesday, November 6th. If you were not able to join us, you can check out what you missed. Just click on this link to watch the segment. http://video.valleypbs.org/video/2365115408/ Heartfelt thanks to everyone who worked, volunteered and/or donated to make yet another open house a riproaring success! Without your help, your donations and loyal support, these events would not be possible. THANK YOU! From In Memory of Soukup, Deborah & Steven............................ In honor of Mrs, Hazel Special Delivery The Cat House on the Kings received a very special delivery from a Solano County classroom of very special people. Teacher Cathy Renardson’s class of physically and developmentally disabled adults, ages 18-22, assisted in making blankets, knitted hats, a large rug and various other items to donate to the Cat House. We are deeply touched and grateful for this thoughtful and generous donation. Lori Franzen and student work on rug students work on blankets Haunted Fresno Hosts “Lucky Black Cat Night” One of the Cat House’s long-time foster parents, Matt Hobe, is also the owner of the extremely popular “Haunted Fresno”. On October 26th, in an effort to dispel the perception of black cats as bad luck, Matt hosted a “Lucky Black Cat Night”. Matt said that in Europe, black cats are considered “good luck’. For every person who came to the scary attraction dressed as a black cat, Matt donated $5 to the Cat House on the Kings. He invited the Cat House to set up a community outreach table where Diana Alvarez, dressed as a black cat, and Matthew Mendoza (see Aetna article) passed out candy while selling t-shirts and giving out info on low-cost spays and neuters. They also collected cash donations. In total, $413 was raised for the Cat House on the Kings. Bunny is 500th Cat Adopted! A tiny, dehydrated kitten was found with her foot tangled in a wire fence. She was nursed back to health however the toes on that foot could not be saved. This made her walk with a little hop, hence the name, “Bunny”. A wonderful family has adopted Bunny. Please consider the joy of adding a cat (or another cat) to your family. Libby brought the kittens home only to receive a call that 2 more kittens had been found. The kittens were covered in fleas and one needed to be bottle-fed. With the school fundraising carnival coming, the decision was made to place the kittens in the silent auction. The sweet, lucky kittens all went to great homes (all agreed to spay and neuter) and the school made $75. Definitely a win-win situation for all! The Dedication wall helps raise much needed funds. You may make a donation for a plaque in memory of a lost loved (In Memory of...), to honor someone (In Honor of...), or just to show your support of the cat House (The Miller Family Supports...) The plaques are black metal with gold lettering and are hung in the entryway of the Cat House. They surprised us with a truckload, literally, a truckload of cleaning supplies. Earl Yorkey and Rita Hecocks filled their pickup truck with Pine-Sol, bleach, paper towels and Dawn dish soap. In addition they gave us a cash donation too. Thank you Earl and Rita!! Couple donates truckload of supplies Senior Cat Gets Second Chance Shmoo was adopted from the Cat House as an 8-week old kitten. When Shmoo’s owner passed away, she found herself back at the Cat House. At 7 years of age, her chances of being adopted were slim. It was decided that her best chance was to go to the adoption center at the Fresno Petco. Christine Riggs stopped by the Petco one day and noticed the pretty calico. “I found myself returning to the pretty calico to play with her some more” said Christine. Christine went home but Shmoo remained on her mind. She returned the next day and adopted Shmoo. Christine’s sons, who dote on her, renamed her “Mrs. Callie”. Christine sent us a wonderful letter about how Christine & Shmoo on adoption day! happy they are with Mrs. Callie. ”She has been a wonderful cat to have,” wrote Christine. “For anyone considering adopting a cat, please consider an older cat for they bring just as much joy as a kitten.” Petco News Our Petco Adoption Center is doing very well in its first year with 383 adoptions so far! The center’s first anniversary rolls around in February and plans are being made for a celebration. We will announce the details once they are finalized. In some less than happy news, our Fresno Petco Adoption center was recently the victim of a crime. Thieves entered the Petco store by cutting a hole through the roof. With their sights set on several hundred dollars in a donation jar, they smashed through our locked glass doors. The resident cats fled into the main store and after an exhaustive search all cats were found, scared but unharmed. Donations are being accepted to replace the glass doors and the stolen cash. http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/contribute.php We are participating in the Petco Foundation Tree of Hope fundraiser from November 18th through December 25th. Putting a homeless pet on your Christmas list could mean the difference between a pet spending the holidays in a lonely shelter or spending it safe and warm with a loving family of their own. The Cat House Adoption Center at Petco is selling cat themed baskets and assorted cat /dog items such as a cat tea set. In addition, the register clerks are asking for a donation for the Cat House when shoppers are paying for their purchases or they ask if the customer would care to round up the purchase amount. When the fundraiser is over, the Petco Foundation sends us a check for the total amount raised. Taking care of 1,000 cats and kittens is very expensive. Please support this worthy cause! Petco Xmas Basket 4 Tree of Hope Aetna Giving Fair Diane Alvarez and her fiancé, Matthew Mendoza are staunch supporters and volunteers at the Cat House on the Kings. Diane works at Aetna so when the annual Aetna Giving Fair came around, Diane worked to get a spot for the Cat House. She also put together the awesome display board. Aetna holds the giving fair to encourage their employees to choose a deserving charity to receive donations from them through payroll deductions. Matthew helped Tammy Barker set up and man the information table. He even baked cookies to help lure people to the table. (This guy is a keeper Diane! Ladies, am I right?) “We were a very popular table,” said Tammy. Tammy & Michael at Aetna Giving Fair Zazzle.com The Cat House on the Kings has teamed up with Zazzle.com to sell Cat House on the Kings merchandise. You can purchase a variety of Cat House on the Kings items including the alwayspopular t-shirts to mugs, tote bags and even usable postage stamps featuring our very own “Floozy Cats.” Time to shop for Christmas gifts for friends and relatives. Support The Cat House on the Kings by shopping online for your gifts at zazzle.com/cathouseonthekings National Feral Cat Day National Feral Cat Day was October 16th. For the second year, the Cat House on the Kings partnered with Alley Cat Allies (www.alleycat.org) in this important annual event. Kathy Scheer, a devoted volunteer, foster mom and adoption coordinator for the past 13 years, suggested that we offer low-cost and free spays/neuters for local feral or free-roaming cats. We arranged with Dr. Piel of New Village Pets in Selma, to schedule one entire day for the Cat House. Since spays and neuters are obviously not really “free”, it was necessary to raise some funds to finance the project. Kathy Scheer donated the first $100 and Volunteers help load up feral cats she challenged other cat lovers to match her donation. Through many individual efforts and Facebook requests, an amazing $3,480.00 was donated for the National Feral Cat Day project. Twenty-two people showed up for their appointments with feral cats in traps and freeroaming cats in carriers. Kathy Scheer and Mary McKinney joined our amazing Tammy Barker in loading up the 22 cats, transporting them both to and from New Village Pets and assisting in the mounds of paperwork. Tammy said; “We felt it was a very successful day and the only way that we can help cut down on the feline deaths resulting from Tammy has a full load of cats the over-population of cats in the valley.” There were some leftover funds so the Cat House is planning to hold another mass spay day sometime in December. Help Jack Perez AND The Cat House Jack Perez is the man that brought the Cat House on the Kings to the attention of the world. The Cat House was in danger of imminent closure before the video he created literally brought us back from the brink of disaster. Jack has now entered a video about the Cat House into the “Shelter Me Video Contest”. If Jack wins the contest, the $5,000 first prize is split between Jack and the Cat House. There are 2nd and 3rd place prizes as well, but why bother to mention them when we know we have the capability and fan base to cinch a first place win for Jack? You may vote daily until December 20th. It is quick and easy and we appreciate your support and mouse clicks. One vote a day, that’s all it takes! http://contest.shelterme.com/videos/248 Reedley TNR Project Receives Grant Daphne Speaks Hi, it’s me, Daphne. I’m a little sad because my mommy is sad. Mommy said that she has never seen adoptions so low. There are kittens stacked to the ceilings in the adoption house. All these young upstarts running amok on the grounds is the last thing I need. If no one adopts them, they have to live here, forever! I just don’t have the time or energy to indoctrinate all these kids on how things work here at the Cat House. My mommy needs me. I am, after all, mommy’s favorite little princess. The other thing that makes mommy so sad is that since we have so many cats and kittens, we can’t take anymore in. Mommy said we are “full up”. I like it when my tummy is full up but mommy says it is not the same thing. If everyone could come out here to the Cat House and adopt a kitten, or a cat, that would be great! Mommy would be soooo happy and I would not be so overwhelmed with trying to control all of these kittens. One last thing, we cats really don’t take up much room, one cat, pretty small. C’mon, you know you want a cute little kitten. I will be expecting to see you...you there...yeah you! Freekibble.com Playing Meow Trivia everyday earns us cat food! We would like to thank the Suzanne Johnson Charitable Trust for bestowing upon us, a grant of $1,000 to help spay and neuter the feral/ free-roaming cats of Reedley. This money has helped us to pay for the spaying and neutering a p p r o x imately 35 cats and kittens in a large feral colony living Feral cats at feeding time near the river. After several months of trapping an average of 3-4 cats a week, we are nearing the end of this project. We were even able to find homes for several friendly kittens and young cats. We had to maintain a secretive element to our work for fear of people thinking they could drop off their unwanted cats there. This is exactly what happened several times over the course of the project. On one occasion, a little girl came over to the lady that feeds the cats each day and said, “Those two kittens are mine. My mommy and daddy said we brought them here to play with the other kitties.” Way to go parents. Just wait till she grows up and realizes what you really did. Morally what they did is reprehensible, in a legal sense, they have broken the law. What fine examples parents like these set for their children. Animalist News Comes to Cat House Discovery’s Animalist news recently sent out it’s own Amber the Intern to get the lowdown on just what is the Cat House on the Kings. Amber Gochoel not only did a great job on the story, she came back and adopted a beautiful rag-doll cat that had captured her heart. Click the links to view the Discovery segment http://youtu.be/yF90-Imefgc and to read Amber’s blog story about us. http://stayingpawsitive.com/2013/11/06/ the-house-of-one-thousand-cats/ The Animal Rescue Site: (http://www.shelterchallenge.com) 2013 Shelter Challenge continues until December 22nd. We are lagging behind in votes. Please vote daily-It only takes a minute, but collectively those minutes can become a lot of desperately needed cash for the Cat House. Thank You!
