That those from diverse reliDear Father Hathaway, As another year begins I pray that you and your generous parish fami- gious traditions and all peoly are in good health and good cheer. Your incredible outpouring of gifts ple of good will may work and prayers for our rural poor certainly brought cheer this past Christtogether for peace. mas where little or none would have been present otherwise. I am forever thankful for the support and kindness you and your parish show to our needy families. Each year it seems that the number of families who are in dire need increases by leaps and bounds. The percentage of children in Madison County who qualified for free and reduced lunch and breakfast rose from 29.8% in 2009/10 to 41.3% in 2013/14! [Culpeper County went from 37.4% to 44.7%; Orange County 34.7% to 43.2%; and Rappahannock County 27% to 34.6%.] Families in all of these counties receive help from St. Veronica’s. In both Madison and Rappahannock County there is no public transportation, very little affordable housing, and almost no subsidized housing. Our children attend public schools where teachers exert huge effort to teach them and empower them. But, Father, these children (many, many of them, ride the bus for over an hour) go back to homes that have no internet, no computers, often no land line phones and little security in regards to food, electricity or heat. Much of the available work in rural areas revolves around agriculture or tourism. Our textile plants left with NAFTA; nothing has replaced them. Winter is the off-season, [which] means no work. When the season begins again in early spring, these jobs pay so little and have such variable hours it seems almost like a new age feudal system. The workers endure these hardships because that is all there is. Competition is huge at coveted work places like McDonald’s and Sheetz; to secure a CNA position or kitchen position at one of our nursing homes or schools is like finding gold. Furthermore, even our phones are not as dependable as a few years ago. With technology changing faster and faster it is increasingly difficult for our rural poor to keep up. Most job applications are now online and I would guess most of our rural poor don’t have computers. (At least none of the families I work with have computers.) Madison library has nine public use computers; a person signs on and then has two hours (very generous) to take care of their business. The library is open Mon.Sat. during regular daytime hours but only two nights a week. Many people need assistance with the computers. . . . One of the families that I delivered presents and gift cards to was typical in their gratefulness as well discussing the impact of seasonal work on their family. This mother indicated that with almost nonexistent winter work hours for her husband they did not have the money for their electric bill and their rent. I told her that one option was that we could go to Walmart and buy a VISA card using (odd but it can be done) the Walmart gift cards intended for her family. This way she could pay her electric bill with the VISA card and use the remaining gift cards for food. We found ample gifts for the family in the bounty of Christmas gifts that came in from “St. Nick”! A very, very happy Christmas followed. Father, I cannot thank you and your dear parish family enough. I praise the Good Lord that you assist us in your outreach efforts. God bless you all and Happy New Year. ~Sincerely, Ruth G. Kulick Evangelization: Consecrated life. That in this year dedicated to consecrated life, religious men and women may rediscover the joy of following Christ and strive to serve the poor with zeal.
