ixteen-year-old Shawna lives with her grandparents and has only been in Florence
Crittenton’s Life Skills Program for two
and a half months, but already she sees a
brighter, healthier future for herself. She is determined
to go to college, and with the help of her Life Skills
Specialist,Ricky Williams, she is assessing her interests,
learning about various scholarships that are available
and how to apply for them. “I have always loved colors
and moving furniture around, so I have decided I want
a career in interior decorating.” Some of Shawna’s
other goals in the program are to learn how to use
credit wisely, do taxes, create and maintain a budget
and apply for a loan. “I can’t call my Mom to ask her
about these things, so I’m happy that Florence
Crittenton will teach me.” When asked what she
thinks of the Life Skills Program, Shawna replied, “It
has given me a sense of direction, and I value
my life now. If you’re lost, it’s how to find your way.”

TAKE TIME OUT FOR TEENS
FROM THE EXECUTIVE
pring is always an exciting time at Florence
Crittenton, and this year was no exception. In
March, we celebrated the third annual Teaming
Up for Kids! Luncheon along with nearly 700 caring
members of our community. I would like to extend
my deep gratitude and thanks to Ina Manaster,
our Luncheon Chair, and her dedicated committee.
It’s an understatement to say that together they
created one of the most memorable events in
Florence Crittenton’s history.
A very special thank you to our Honorary
Chairs, Missy and Lyle Anderson, who gave us
the pleasure of presenting His Royal Highness,
Prince Andrew,The Duke of York with the HOPE
Award; his first award recognizing his philanthropic
work on behalf of abused children.
In addition, I would like to thank Mike Eruzione,
our Champion of CourageAward recipient,Christi Paul,
our emcee and all the businesses, foundations, donors
and guests for their valuable contributions. Without
your support, this amazing event would not have been
possible. The funds raised go directly toward meeting
the needs of the hundreds of children and families we
serve each year. Your generosity plays a vital role in
our ability to continue offering exceptional programs
and services that transform precious lives.
2
I think you’ll all
agree that summer is
definitely here, and it’s
now that we are often
presented with extra
time to do the things
we can’t the rest of the
year. This summer, I
Linda Volhein
Executive
Director
encourage you to create
lasting memories by spending both quality and quantity
time with the children in your life. Many of Florence
Crittenton’s girls and boys have not experienced
healthy relationships with adults, yet this is so important
to their self-esteem and development into successful
young women and men. See the sidebar story titled
“Take Time Out for Teens” to find out how you
can help fill this void in their lives.
As you think of creative ways to stay cool and
have fun during the hot summer, please consider
the endless ways you can make a difference
personally in the lives of Florence Crittenton’s
girls. Whether it’s through volunteering, donating, or
becoming a member of the Charles Crittenton Society,
each of you has the power to give hope to a child.
Best wishes,
Adolescence is the time when teens
strive to gain greater freedom and
independence; attempt to “spread their
wings.” This is when it becomes critical
for parents to spend meaningful time
with their teens to provide affection,
positive affirmation, emotional support, and direction.
But what about teens who do not have a parent present in
their life to provide them with guidance and experiences that will
help them make the right decisions when influenced by peers?
This is where a mentor can step in and become a positive
role model in a struggling teen’s life; a teen like Haley.
Fifteen-year-old Haley arrived at Florence Crittenton with
very low self-esteem, and she was very uncomfortable and nervous
around strangers. Her spirit broken from years of abuse and neglect,
she wanted nothing more than to be left alone in her room.
However once Haley got settled into the residential group home,
her case manager felt she might truly benefit from the presence
of a mentor in her life.
Haley was eventually matched with Cynthia, who took her
out to places she had never been before like nice restaurants,
Phoenix Mercury basketball games, museums and libraries.
Through spending these special times together, Haley, a once shy,
nervous and fearful girl soon blossomed into a more relaxed,
self-assured and confident young lady.
“Cynthia taught me to trust and encouraged me to look at
life in a different way. I can talk to her about anything, and she
makes me feel bright and beautiful. What means the most to me
is that she spends her time with me.”
Many of Florence Crittenton’s girls and boys are waiting
right now to be matched up with a mentor. If you would like to
share your time and talents and become a powerful, positive
influence in the lives of our kids, please call Kristi Langhoff at
602-288-4502 to find out how you can become a mentor today.

O
n March 31, the 3rd Annual Teaming Up for Kids! Luncheon netted nearly $437,000 to benefit Florence Crittenton’s girls, boys and their families. The afternoon’s program was
emceed by CNN’s Christi Paul. Governor Janet Napolitano presented His Royal
Highness, Prince Andrew, The Duke of York with the HOPE award, and 1980 U.S. Olympic
Hockey Team Captain, Mike Eruizone, accepted the Champion of Courage award. This was the first
time HRH Prince Andrew has been honored with an award for his philanthropic work on behalf of
abused children. A highlight of this year’s luncheon program was a “fireside chat” with
Governor Napolitano discussing a variety of topics with HRH Prince Andrew including
his service in the Royal Navy, his work on behalf of UK Trade and Investment and the
importance of spending time with his two daughters.

Missy & Lyle Anderson
For more than 10 years, Missy and Lyle Anderson have been tireless
champions of Florence Crittenton’s mission. They share generously of their
time, talents and treasure to help our girls see a new, healthier future for
themselves. The Andersons are founding members of the Charles

staff were captivated as Holocaust survivor,
Helen Handler shared her story of
how she has triumphed over this historic
tragedy that claimed millions of innocent
lives, including her entire family. Following
are some of the students’ thoughts and
reactions to Helen’s presentation.
“When Helen spoke about how
segregation affects all
races, it really hit me.
When she spoke about
how we are all brothers
and sisters, I realized
how true it was, and
that I should watch how
I speak to others.”

know this is a true sign that spring is over and summer is upon us.
The Auxiliary held their annual Spring Luncheon and Fashion show
on May 19th. During the luncheon, current President Yvonne Roth announced
next year’s officers and officially passed the gavel to the new incoming president,
Ruth Young. A special thank you to Stein Mart who provided the beautiful fashions
for this year’s show. Thank you to all who attended and modeled!
