Florence Crittenton was both thrilled and honored to be
named the winner of a $1 million endowment from
The Board of Visitors in early January. What a way to
start out the new year! “This gift will provide the kind of
financial security that will ensure we have the resources
to keep helping Arizona’s girls and young women in need
for another 100+ years,” said Linda Volhein.
A million thanks to The Board of Visitors for this
tremendous gift!
In November, the Organization for Nonprofit Executives (ONE) named Linda Volhein “Director of the
Year” in their large program
category. “I never expected
this to happen, and I am
humbled to be honored in
this way,” said Linda.
Our Mission: Florence Crittenton gives every girl whose life we touch safety, hope and opportunity.

Why are mentors so important? There are too many
and energy as mentors to make a difference in young people who do not have a caring adult in
children’s lives. January was National Mentoring their life to provide encouragement and support.

set goals and achieve their dreams.
Think of the mentors in your own life –
a team coach, teacher, boss, concerned neighbor – and the
difference they made. Now you can make that same
difference to a young person and help them realize
their full potential in life.
To become a mentor or learn more about our programs, please
call Sara Dyer at 602-288-4544.
Here’s what our mentors are saying...
“I became a mentor, because I wanted
my mentee to have the kind of emotional
security that I've had my whole life. I
think she does trust me and appreciates
that I don't try to be a disciplinarian or
take on a parental role.”
– Jenni Pierson, mentor for 1 year
“When I started mentor training, I thought
what a great way to help someone else.
The truth is, Giovanna is the gift to me.
She has shown me what I am made of
and helped me to articulate my values.
She has been a true blessing to both my
husband and me.”
– Beth McRae
Thank you,
USA Baby!
The staff, young moms and
babies at Girls Ranch would like to
thank Diane Orb from USA Baby
for all of the generous donations she
has given them over the past year.
Diane has supplied an amazing
variety of baby items that the
program would not have if it were
not for her. “We are extremely
grateful to Diane and USA Baby for
their generosity and appreciate all
their support,” said Katrina Sherrill,
program manager at Girls Ranch.
“What I like best about being a mentor is that
the possibilities of activity and personal growth,
for both the mentor and mentee, are endless!
One of my most memorable experiences was
last year when I traveled for work quite a bit,
I sent my mentee a postcard from each city
I visited. It made me feel appreciated that
she saved each and every one of them! We
enjoy doing a lot of things together like getting
our nails done, eating out, attending the
Barrett Jackson Car Show and seeing Disney
on Ice with her entire family.”

Florence Crittenton’s first inaugural Amazing
Road Rally was just that – AMAZING!
M
ore than 20 teams turned out and enjoyed an afternoon of fun and adventure at the first inaugural
Amazing Road Rally. The day’s festivities began at the magnificent Penske Racing Museum. Teams
were given their first clue to embark on a journey that took them through theValley on our challenging routes that included several checkpoints along the way. At each stop, the teams were given new clues
to solve that led them on the path to their final destination. “My team and I had a great time solving the
funny, yet challenging clues. I can’t remember the last time I’ve
laughed so much,” said one team’s captain at the finish line.
The day’s adventure ended with a post-rally party at the
Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving,
where winners experienced the thrill of a lifetime – laps
around the race track at speeds of more than 100mph with the
racing legend himself, Bob Bondurant! Finish line festivities
also included music, raffle prizes and a delicious meal catered
by Outback Steakhouse.

Auxiliary member, Jane Ann George welcomed 23 of our girls who did not get to go home for the
holidays into her home for a wonderful brunch on Christmas morning. Later that afternoon, former Board
member,Dawn Donovan and her parents visited the agency to host a holiday craft project with the girls.
A number of our Auxiliary members are still volunteering their time at Flo’s on 7th, and we would
like to thank each of you for your dedication. The store has been open for a year now, and we have
gotten a lot of valuable feedback from our shoppers and volunteers along the way. We want you to
know that we have listened and appreciate your candor. You will find that we now have lower prices,
regular markdowns, and we are accepting donations as early as 7:00am Monday through
Friday. This makes it easier for many of you to drop off your gently-loved items on your way to work in
the mornings. Remember,we are always in need of donations,so please encourage your friends
and family to support Flo’s on 7th,where all proceeds benefit our programs for at-risk youth.
If you’re interested in joining our ladies Auxiliary, please call 602-288-4567.

embers of our ladies Auxiliary hosted a very special holiday party for the girls that included
delicious food, as well as original stories and poems read by the girls. A highlight of the
event was when each girl received a lovely travel-size suitcase filled with an assortment
of special gifts. What made this such a meaningful gift is that many of our girls arrive with their few
personal items literally in a plastic garbage bag. Now, each of them has a beautiful suitcase to store
their personal items in when they leave our program.

Auxiliary members, Jane Ann George (left)
and Bobbie Baker.
“I’ve been volunteering with the Auxiliary for five
years and have truly enjoyed the companionship
of these wonderful, dedicated ladies. The true
joy comes, however, in seeing the good that
comes from our efforts on behalf of the girls in
the Florence Crittenton program and throughout
the entire agency. I have enjoyed a variety of
hands-on activities with the girls – birthday parties,
swim outings, camping in Flagstaff, and holiday
celebrations – and look forward each week to
helping at Flo’s on 7th. Giving my time to Florence
Crittenton is so fulfilling, knowing that I’m helping
to change the lives of these special girls.”
