s ' e n i t n e l a V ! r e n n i D y a D The Pradera Press February 2011 4th 1 y r a u r Feb Monday, Please call 303.607.5700 to make your reservation The Club at Pradera 5225 Raintree Drive, Parker, CO 80134 (303)607-5700 Chips Shots With little or no golf in January, winter is certainly in full swing at the Club. This is traditionally the time of year when both staff and our many Member Committees are working diligently behind the scenes on the upcoming calendar of events in an effort to insure that we continue to grow our already successful events and develop and implement many new and exciting one’s for you and your family. That said, please be sure to check Club Calendar located on the Members side of the Pradera website for additional information and as we get closer to “true” golf weather. Turf Care Corner Canada geese are migrating birds that like to graze in open fields for suitable food supply, visibility, and proximity to water. They prefer an unobstructed area so they can clearly see any potential predators. On a golf course they destroy the turf by eating it down past the crown of the plant. Their droppings create problems leading to an over abundance of nitrogen which severely burns the plant tissue. In the lake water this encourages algae growth which reduces our water quality. Messy droppings can accumulate quickly; one goose can defecate up to 28 times per day. This creates the potential for environmental problems and risk to human health. Golf courses are the perfect hang out for geese, plenty of water, feed, and sand for the digestion of the food, wide open spaces and minimal predation. They can be quite aggressive toward people and pets during nesting season which is early spring. We need to do our best to avoid the geese getting comfortable and settling down to nest; once they do they will become locals and eventually progress into an epidemic. One female goose is capable of fifty offspring in her lifetime. Geese mate for life and their instinct is to return to their birth place to reproduce. In early January, The Advisory Board of Governors completed their 2011 Board interviews and we are pleased and excited to welcome Mr. Darin Swick, Mr. Jerry Lindstrom, and Mr. Dave Churchill as newly elected Board Members. On behalf of the entire Pradera Team we look forward to continuing to work with the entire Advisory Board of Governors and all of our Committees as we look to grow on the successes of 2010. If you have not had the opportunity to experience the Knife & Cork Menu, please be sure to join us in the Mt. Elbert room every Thursday and Friday evening. Menu’s change weekly and reservations are requested. In addition, to the Knife & Cork, the Club will be open for a special Valentines Dinner on Monday, February 14th. This event will be sold out, so please be sure to make your reservations early and join us for this special evening. Here at Pradera we use both dogs and an agricultural or wildlife pest control designed to HAZE, not harm the wildlife. These “bird bombs” are loud and may sound similar to a gun shot, do not be alarmed. These are a humane way to manage this nuisance species. We want the geese to migrate and stay wild, not become localized, so please be advised we are protecting the golf course and preventing the geese from making Pradera their new permanent home. Also in February and new for 2011, shake off the winter rust with the Indoor Golf Simulator on Sunday, February 27th. Starting times are available on the hour throughout the day and can be booked by contacting our Head Golf Professional; Rick Ellefson. In closing and as always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can ever answer any questions or assist you in any way. Thank you for your continued support of the Club and I look forward to a successful 2011 season. Warm Regards, Thank you, Chip Hierlihy, PGA General Manager [email protected] 303-607-5671 H.
