Dear Friends of the YWCA,
Your YWCA continues to provide fitness programs in our newly
renovated pool, including swimming lessons, Aqua Zumba®, aquacize
and water walking. In addition, we have open swim time and the
opportunity to host your own pool parties. In this program guide you
will find schedules for pool activities, Y-Dance lessons, volleyball
opportunities and more. We really need for our pool memberships to
continue to grow, so please come support us and get swim fit! We
have pool membership options for everyone.
As always, this is your YWCA and we are here to offer not only fun
activities but also assistance, when needed, through the Domestic
Violence Intervention and Prevention Program and the Women’s
Cancer Program.
Our Dream Big Campaign for moving the domestic violence shelter to
the Oppenheimer House and continuing the renovation of the main
building will kick off in early 2015. A big thank you to Cathy WrightEger for chairing this campaign for us. Stay tuned because it’s going to
be an exciting year!
In the meantime, if you wish to support our efforts, consider the
donation form in this program guide or visit us online at
www.ywcalafayette.org/donate.
Great things are happening at your YWCA and we are
looking forward to a fabulous 2015!

January 14
Guest Speaker: Tracy Dodds, Grants Director, YWCA Greater Lafayette; First
Woman Inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame
“Blazing Trails for Women”
Tracy was one of the first women in the field of sports writing, covering everything from
the Olympic Games to Muhammad Ali title fights. She began her career when media
passes said, “No Women or Children in the Press Box.” When she retired from the
newspaper business more than 30 years later, the passes said, “Working Press
Only.” Tracy will share highlights from that journey.
February 11
Guest Speaker: Katy Bunder, Executive Director, Food Finders Food Bank
“Blazing Ahead to Reduce Hunger”
We are blazing ahead to reduce hunger in the 16 counties we serve. It is unacceptable
for low income families and individuals to remain hungry when we live in a wealthy
country that produces most of the world’s food. With the opening of the Food Resource
and Education Center, Food Finders will distribute more food and teach people how to
use the resources available to them to improve food security in their households.
March 11
Guest Speaker: Dr. Leah Jamieson, The John A. Edwardson Dean, College of
Engineering, Purdue University
“A Dean's Retrospective on Women in Engineering ... and a Look into the Future”
Dean Leah Jamieson will share her experience as a woman in engineering, will reflect
on what has changed and what remains the same, and will speculate about the future.
April 8
Guest Speaker: Donya Lester, Executive Director, Purdue Ag Alumni Association
“Setting the Fields on Fire: Speaking Up for Agriculture”
Consumers and the public are more disconnected from those who produce their food
than at any time in our history. “Agvocacy” is vital to the success of the agriculture
industry. Donya is an accomplished public speaker and seasoned ag professional who
also happens to be a farm wife. Her agenda is to build better relationships with
consumers and policy makers for ag producers and the land-grant agricultural university
system.
May 13
Guest Speaker: Toyinda Wilson-Long, Founder, Leadership Strategy &
Consulting, LLC.; President, Purdue Black Alumni Organization
“The Masterpiece: Creating Dynamic Connections”
Mastering the art of connecting with people will help you to succeed personally,
professionally and civically. At times we may believe that some individuals are naturally
able to connect; in actuality, anyone can learn how to make communication an
opportunity for a dynamic connection. Toyinda will share connecting principles and
practices she uses in her involvements. Get ready to activate your artistic talents!
