Québec Hydro electricity Competitive advantage for the manufacturing sector. The low cost of electricity sharply limits local economic opportunities in this segment. Energy Efficiency Québec Niches Examples: • Industrial processes (advanced refrigeration/heat recovery) •Equipment for transportation applications Truck fleet operators are very interested in improving energy efficiency. Weak Average Strong Remarks Biofuels, biogas, forestry residues (biorefinery) and marine biotechnology are sub-segments in which Québec is active. Niches Québec Biomass Examples: • 1st and 2nd generation biofuels • Energy pellets Vehicle equipment manufacturers specialize in the collection, treatment, sorting and processing of recyclables . Québec Waste Niches Examples: • Vehicle equipment manufacturers • Sorting centre of the future and optical sorting • Recycling of plastic • Thermal plasma for waste destruction and energy recovery Leaders in the brokerage and recycling of plastic and the production of plastic from recycled resin. Waek Average Strong Remarks Companies working in the this segment essentially supply local services. Water Québec Niches Example : • Decentralized treatment systems Best wind potential in North America Wind energy Québec Weak Average Strong Remarks The business environment is composed primarily of local SMEs. Soil Québec Niches Example: • Bio-treatment of soil Two major players in the solar thermal niche are in business in Québec. Solar energy Québec Niches Example: • Thermal air heating Weak Average Strong Remarks There are no large-scale regional smart grid projects. Intelligent Transport Québec An electric bus project (funded by the QRIS) Electric Vehicles Québec Public ground transit has traditionally been a strong sector in Québec. Québec Power train component manufacturing and electrification Niches Examples: • Batteries • Charging stations • Electric drive train systems • Lightweight materials The Québec government's 2011-2020 Action Plan for Electric Vehicles Major projects like the electric bus and ecological aircraft (funded by the QRIS) Weak Average Strong Remarks Although Québec adopted the Clean Air Regulation, it would appear that Europe has stricter air quality regulations than Québec and Canada Creation of a cap-and-trade system for GHG allowances Air Québec Niches • Biogas purification • Carbon capture Although many players believe that this sector holds tremendous potential (e.g., industrial bioprocesses), there is very little special activity. Green Chemistry Québec Québec is home to the world's first nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) demonstration plant. IN CONCLUSION • Vast territory rich in natural resources • Diverversified industrial structure • Solidly established training and research infrastructure • Clean, green energy choices • Strong leadership in combating climate change Québec is Open for… - Business - Partnerships Further Propel Cheantech
