HOW BIG IS A CORD OF
WOOD?
I have a friend who sells wood part
time. He tells me that from time to
time he finds people who do not get
their money’s worth when they
purchase firewood.
The problem arises between a
“full cord” and a “face cord” of
wood.
A full cord of firewood is a stack of
wood that equals 128 cu. ft.
Although usually defined as
4’ x 4’ x 8’, obviously it can be an
equal dimension, such as
2’ x 4’ x 16’.
A face cord is a stack of firewood
where the “face” is a traditional
4’ x 8’, but the depth is not the
4’ measurement.
This can occur when the wood has
been cut in an odd length so that it
stacks up to an odd length.
Such as two rows deep of 18” wood
adds up to 3’deep.
If you have purchased a face cord,
which equals 3’ x 4’ x 8’,
you’ve only bought 75% of a full
cord.
