Oil/Water Separators
Oil/Water Separators ® Featuring the Corella Coalescer Highland Tank ® Oil/Water Separators Highland Tank is the leader in the steel tank industry and has been building oil/water separators for decades. Years of experience enable Highland Tank to provide solutions to the most challenging wastewater treatment needs. Our team of design, engineering, fabrication and service professionals bring years of experience and knowledge from other steel tank fields to this market. These innovative techniques improve the overall quality and life of the vessel while simplifying installation and everyday use. Our custom-build capability sets Highland Tank apart from the competition. Oil/Water Separators In Action Exceeding Large Stormwater Treatment System Needs Highland Tank provides the strongest and most reliable oil/water separators in the industry. Our separators are designed to remove oil, grease, light petroleum products and oily-coated solids from a variety of wastewater discharges. The effluent from oil/water separators is typically discharged to either a storm sewer or a sanitary sewer system. Since 1986, Highland Tank’s Oil/Water Separators have set the standard for reliability. Our parallel plate separators are highly-efficient — treating wastewater under a wide range of conditions. Unlike other oil/water separators, they are easy to install, operate and maintain. A wide range of industrial applications require high-efficiency oil/water separators. Some examples include: • Airports & Aircraft Services • Electric Utilities & Power Plants • Environmental Remediation • Industrial Facilities • Military & Government Installations • Municipalities • Petroleum Production & Marketing Facilities • Railroad Yards • Transportation Companies They are also located in many vehicle service areas associated with fueling, repair and maintenance shops and wash areas. Environment Canada (EC) is a diverse organization with programs, services, and people leading the way in implementing Canada’s environmental agenda. The Canadian Environmental Protection Act and Pollution Prevention programs require “the use of processes, practices, materials, products, substances or forms of energy that avoid or minimize the creation of pollutants and waste, and reduce the overall risk to the environment or human health.” Canadian stormwater discharge regulations are very similar to those in the United States. Environmental rules impact a multitude of business sectors such as mines, manufacturing plants, refineries, transportation systems, and many others with potential to create and discharge wastewater associated with industrial processes. The expansion of operations at a large metal manufacturing facility in the Province of Quebec was completed in compliance with EC rules through the use of high-performance oil/water separators. Due to the proximity of the plant to a sensitive waterway, the design engineering team specified multiple Highland Tank oil/water separators to help the facility satisfy the strict effluent discharge regulations. The project resulted in significant upgrades to the storm water collection system and the installation of five Highland Tank Model HTC-60,000 gallon oil/water separators, designed for the treatment of contaminated stormwater runoff. Each separator is rated for 0-6,000 GPM flow rate and discharge with an average effluent quality well within the environmental limits. Heavy-duty steel construction using ¼” thick mild-carbon steel in strict accordance with Highland Tank’s HighGuard Corrosion Control System was employed, and each separator was fitted with Highland Tank’s exclusive EZ Access manway design. This fast-track project - including design specifications, review, approval, fabrication and delivery - was completed within one year, demonstrating Highland Tank’s commitment and dedication to providing outstanding customer service. The double-wall separators measured 13’ in diameter; 60’ 6” long and weighed nearly 95,000 lbs each. All five HTC-60,000 oil/water separators were delivered in three stages over the course of 30 days to accommodate installation requirements on site. ® ® Corella Technology The Corella Coalescer The Corella® Coalescer is a removable, inclined parallel, flat/corrugated plate coalescer that enhances separation of both oil and solids from all strata of the wastewater stream. It is individually engineered to specific application and job-site requirements to maximize utility. Features, Advantages & Benefits ® Corella inclined parallel plate coalescers combine the features of flat and corrugated plate coalescers into a dual-function design that performs better than traditional plate coalescers. Plate clogging is the primary reason for separator failure. Corella’s® multi-purpose plates greatly reduce the accumulation of settleable solids in the plate pack and minimize separator shutdown and maintenance by simultaneously separating free oil droplets and settleable or suspended solids from water. Corella® plates are assembled and arranged to allow settleable solids to accumulate on the flat top of the plates and slide downward, while the oil coalesces into sheets on the corrugated undersides and flows upward. Unlike other oil/water separators, both oil and solids are removed, minimizing shutdowns for periodic cleaning. With Highland Tank’s EZ Access manways, inspection of the Corella® takes less effort, eliminating dangerous confined space entry requirements. Access from above permits separator pump-out and cleaning using a high-pressure washer without removing the coalescer pack. Hazardous materials are not discharged at grade during the cleaning process. • Permits separation of mixtures containing both oil and settleable solids, minimizing coalescer clogging • Normal operating temperatures from 40º to 120º F with higher operating temperature units available • Corella® plate packs consist of multiple cartridges to allow for easy removal • Corella® plates are manufactured of oleophilic material • Handles a wide range of oils, specific gravities and suspended particle concentrations • Custom packs are available for higher flow rates, temperatures and solids loading • Increases oil/water separation efficiency - reduces clogging Corella® and Petro-Screen coalescers are removable from above Large rectangular manways, with removable, lightweight top panels for easy access and maintenance Fluid level cannot rise into manways for total secondary containment Patented internal baffles and coalescers accelerate the separation process for unparalled performance down to 10 ppm free oil Effective wastewater treatment at varying flow rates and concentrations Inlet and outlet through separator heads for shallower burial depths The non-traditional Corella® plate pack is available with variable length, angle and spacing, tailored to your specific separator duty. They can be configured to meet a wide variety of capacities and conditions and can be integrated with many other unit operations to provide a total solution to a water treatment problem. Rugged steel construction for greater structural strength, superior product compatibility, and unsurpassed corrosion resistance Double-wall construction available with interstitial leak monitoring Solids slide off flat plate tops and settle in collection area Oil coalesces into sheets on the corrugated undersides and flows upward OWS in Operation The stationary wastewater treatment tank begins service completely filled with water with engineered internal baffles and coalescers fixed and ready to enhance the oil/water separation process. Our separators are designed to allow convenient access for inspection and maintenance. The EZ Access Manways permit unconfined access to the internal workings of the separator. Flow is directed from the inlet pipe against the diffusion baffle to reduce turbulence and distribute flow evenly. Sediment and heavy solids settle out while concentrated oil begins to rise to the surface. The oily water then enters the Corella® Coalescer where oil/water separation is enhanced by the inclined pack of flat/corrugated Corella® plates. The corrugated underside causes oil to coalesce into sheets, making the oil globules rise to the surface quicker. Remaining solids drop onto the plate tops then slide off into the collection area. The effluent continues to flow toward the outlet and is only discharged by gravity displacement. Complete Custom Systems Highland Tank has many accessory components available to complete your wastewater treatment system. Electronic monitoring is available to sense for oil levels. Sensors can turn oil removal pumps on and off automatically. Alarm / Control Panel An adequate anchoring system is essential for maintaining the separator’s stationary position. Our Deadmen Anchoring System provides concrete anchors and polyester hold-down straps designed specifically for each of our separator models. Double-wall separators can be monitored with electronic leak detection sensors installed in the interstitial space to detect an unlikely leak. Electronic monitoring systems can be supplied with audible and visual alarms. Florida is experiencing an increase in population growth throughout the entire state. To meet new demands and provide a reliable, sustained supply of quality water, a well-managed and ample water resource is essential. To provide this fundamental, often taken- for-granted service, research and understanding of the hydrologic conditions of the new areas being developed is paramount. Easy to Install, Operate & Maintain Rectangular oil/water separators are typically installed aboveground to help industrial facilities comply with the EPA's spill and discharge regulations. Like our underground cylindrical units, these separators are equipped with our patented-design Corella® coalescers that accelerate the separation process and greatly reduce the level of oil and oily-coated solids discharged into a municipal storm or sanitary sewer. Industrial, commercial and residential development can place a stranglehold on inadequate water supplies. Realizing the need for a better understanding of water resources by the general public, Florida has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey to identify potential problems and address concerns. When a northern Florida electric utility acquired some additional property for expansion, concerns for water quality now and into the future had to be considered. However, there was an environmental situation that needed to be addressed immediately. The expansion project area was once the home to a railroad tie manufacturing plant. The process for making railroad ties includes treating wooden timbers with Creosote, a bi-product from burning coal, oil or wood. Over many years of tie production, the Creosote leached into the ground, contaminated the groundwater and threatened the area’s entire water system. Highland Tank was chosen to supply the right device for the groundwater remediation project. An aboveground model R-HTC-2000 rectangular separator was installed to process and clean groundwater prior to release back into the water system. The uniquely engineered separator has an integral oil skimming device to remove separated oils on a continuous basis. In addition, an integrated sludge hopper provides additional space for solids to be collected and then removed with minimal disruption to the system. Visual and electronic level indicators monitor levels in the separator to help with routine maintenance. Highland Tank also provided a vertical storage tank for process water to be stored prior to the final filtration treatment and ultimate release back into the environment. Each of these special models incorporates a unique feature to process wastewater and provide an extra, special operation. G-Series separators include an integral sand/grit interceptor compartment ahead of the primary separation chamber to capture and retain larger, heavier solids on the bottom of this chamber. Removing these particles early in the process reduces potential clogging and improves the separation process. Our J-Series separators include an effluent pump-out chamber with submerged pumps and level controls for applications where gravity flow out is not available. Effluent can be pumped to drains or to another additional treatment such as Highland’s Advanced Hydrocarbon Filtration System. Some applications require the separated oils to be removed from the separator on a continuous basis. For these situations, Highland Tank offers the S-Series units with an integral side oil compartment. Oils are skimmed from the water’s surface into a separate chamber for automatic or manual removal. Integral Sand Interceptor Compartment Pumped Discharge Pump Controls and Rails Bulkhead Oil Skimmer Effluent Discharge Pump Side Oil Storage Compartment Oil Pump-out Pipe Diffusion Pipe To filter and treat the effluent even further, Highland Tank offers the TF-Series model separator that employs specially packaged filters that process and polish the effluent as it trickles through the filter media before being discharged via gravity flow from the separator.
