Letter from the Director - Hancock County Humane Society
Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County PETLINE PETLINE November 2014 Letter from the Director Mission Statement The Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County exists to educate the public on care and responsible treatment of animals; to humanely provide for and protect unwanted, lost, and abused animals; and to create a quality environment for all animals through its policies and presence in the community. The Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County houses many animals that come to us through no fault of their own. Some come to us as a result of neglect, abuse, or just because they are unwanted. The Society’s mission is to educate the public on care and responsible treatment of animals; to humanely provide for and protect unwanted, lost, and abused animals; and to create a quality environment for all animals through its policies and presence in the community. The Society struggles every year to have enough funds to support our mission. In the past we have done this through grants, fund raisers, an annual appeal and solicitations. The board, staff, and volunteers work hard to raise money to see that the animals in the shelter are well taken care of, receive love and attention, and that they eventually find their “forever” home. Our desire for the year 2015 is to continue providing the best care possible for the animals that we love so much. We cannot thank you enough for all that you have done for the animals over the past years. With your continued support, we will be able to fulfill our mission to the residents and unwanted animals in Hancock County. Shelter Hours Monday: 12:30pm - 4pm Paula Krugh, Director of Operations Tuesday - Friday: 10am - 5pm Adoptable Dog Spotlight! Saturday: 10am - 3pm Hi I’m Sara! I’m a three year old hound mix that has been living at the shelter since April. I can be a little timid when meeting new people, but I am a very sweet girl! My human friends say I’m very smart and obedient, so I will be easy to train. I love to play ball (the deflated soccer ball is my favorite), and I will even retrieve it and bring it back to you! Come visit with me today, I would love to find my forever home! Sunday: Closed Inside This Issue Letter from the Director & Adoptable Pet Spotlight……………1 Cold Weather Tips for Pets………..2 Marathon Volunteers……….…..…..2 Success Story & Events…………….3 Memorials & Honorariums…..4 & 5 Wish List………………………………..6 Adoptable Cat Spotlight! Hi I’m Hamilton! I am a three year old domestic short hair mix that has been living at the shelter since February. I am very gentle, a purrrrrfect gentleman! I like to “talk” to my human friends here at the shelter. I am litter box trained and I get along with well-mannered dogs. (Some children make me skittish, so a nice, relaxing home would be best.) Please stop out and visit with me! I am ready to go to my forever home! PAGE 2 PETLINE “Adopting one dog (cat) won’t change the world… but it will change the world for that one dog (cat).” Keep Your Pets Safe This Winter! With cold weather fast approaching we need to keep in mind our pet’s safety in the frigid winter months. Please follow these tips to help keep your furry family members safe this winter! A warm vehicle engine can be an appealing heat source for outdoor cats. Bang on the hood of your car before starting the engine to encourage cats to leave the vehicle. Check your dog’s paws frequently for cracked paw pads or bleeding due to ice accumulation between his/her toes. Clipping the hair between your dog’s toes will help prevent ice accumulation. After walks, wipe down your pet to remove chemicals that could be picked up on their feet, legs, and belly. During winter months pets may pick up deicers, antifreeze, or other chemicals that could be toxic to them if ingested. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze. Amber Bihn brought gifts for the shelter animals instead of receiving gifts for herself for her birthday. Thank you so much, Amber, for thinking of the animals in our care and for being such a generous girl! Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect. Cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should not be left outside for long periods of time in cold weather. If your pet is whining, shivering, seems anxious, slows down, seems weak, or starts looking for warm places to burrow, they are showing signs of hypothermia. Marathon Petroleum Volunteers! Volunteers from Marathon were hard at work at the shelter last month! A group of volunteers helped revamp our employee break room—painting the walls and purchasing and installing cabinets and a new countertop! The group also painted the interior of our multipurpose center facility, pruned trees and shrubs on the grounds, and installed new floor grates in the shelter kennels! Thank you so much for your continued support and generosity! PAGE 2 PETLINE Mark Your Calendars For Our Upcoming Events!
