KIDS AND CATTLE SHOWS What do you get when you have a “quiver” full of children, those kids in 4-H wanting to show animals at some fairs, and a small herd of Normandes? You get the Dibble family of West Winfield, New York, having a lot of fun exhibiting their Normandes and doing a great job of exposing the breed to other farmers and fair goers. Abraham, Joseph, Eli, Emily, and Ruth Dibble are the children of Richard and Caroline Dibble of New York. Richard is an ordained deacon within the Anglican Church. He and Caroline have chosen to raise their five children on a small farm where they seek to develop a small milking herd of registered Normandes. The genetic base of their small herd came from the dispersed Zane Smith herd, and they are using French genetics to build their herd up. L-R: ELIJAH, JOSEPH, ABRAHAM & EMILY DIBBLE The Dibble family showed their Normandes at two different shows in 2012. As can be seen in the pictures, they had fun doing it and were creative as well. The first show the Dibble’s exhibited at was the Farmer’s Museum Livestock Show in Cooperstown, NY. This is a youth only three day event show and is open to just 4-H and FFA exhibitors. As is the case when you have an animal of a less popular breed you end up showing in an “Other Breeds” division. Abe showed his cow, “Nutmeg” to the Reserve Grand Champion position within the Other Breeds show. Dibble Normandes named Cinnamon, Rosemary, and Pepper, and shown by Eli, Joe and Emily stood in the top four places of the three year old class of Other Breeds. Emily notes during the show she had a gentleman come up to her and tell her he had just been in France and had seen some Normandes. The second show the Dibble family exhibited at was the Boonville-Oneida County Fair in Boonville, NY. Emily showed her cow, Ginger, to the first place position in the two year old class. In the three year old class her cow, Pepper, stood fourth. Abe’s cow, Nutmeg, stood first in the three year old class and was eventually named Grand Champion of the Other Breeds Show. Joe stood second in the three year old class with Rosemary, and she was selected as Reserve Grand Champion of the Other Breeds. Showing Cinnamon, Eli stood third in the three year old class. MOST HISTORICAL Possessing the enthusiasm of youth, the Dibble’s participated in the fair’s Costume Class and won the “Most Historical” award for their Viking costumes. Emily states their Normandes unique color attracted a lot of attention even though their show string was tied in a tent. Emily also states they had four milking cows in their show string so they took their little Surge milking bucket and borrowed a vacuum pump to milk their cows. They took the milk home and fed it to the calves remaining at the farm. The Dibble family is already planning their 2013 show season. They hope to show six animals in dairy classes and four in beef classes. There is no doubt they will get it done with the enthusiasm these four young people bring to their 4-H projects. Emily Dibble submitted the pictures and information for this article. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ST CROIX VALLEY BULL TEST Recently a sign was erected on the UW-River Falls Mann Research Farm honoring former Normande breeder Jerry Haus for his contributions to the St. Croix Valley Bull Test as a member of their Board of Directors and as the organization’s treasurer. Haus bred Normandes for many years on his Prescott, WI farm. He was a progressive breeder, consigning bulls to the St. Croix Valley Bull Test, entering steers in the World Beef Expo Fed Steer Futurity Contest, and serving on NANA’s Board of Directors. Considering the many contributions of service Jerry Haus made to the Normande breed as a breeder and member of the Board of Directors, and the hours of service he gave to the St. Croix Valley Bull Test, it is only fitting the Mann Research Farm be the site for the St. Croix Valley Bull Test Sale on April 20, 2013, so those attending can see the sign honoring Jerry Haus. Normandes will be the first breed to sell on April 20, 2013, at 11:00 am. Wayne and Lisa Dewey of Iowa Falls, IA, and Jeff and Nona Bock of River Falls,WI are the Normande breeders who entered bulls in the CIRCLE D FOOLERMAN ZOLAND test. Wayne and Lisa Dewey’s bull, Circle D Foolerman Zoland, was the top performing Normande bull and had an average daily gain of 3.29 pounds per day. Zoland was born 03-27-12 with a birth weight of 83 pounds. His sire is Circle D Foolerman 51R and his dam is an own daughter of Norman The First, the first Normande bull imported into the United States. He began the test weighing 670 pounds and finished the test weighing 1130 pounds. Zoland is polled. Jeff and Nona Bock’s bull, Crick Ridge Zoilo, was the second highest performing Normande with an average rate CRICK RIDGE ZOILO of gain of 3.09 pounds per day. Zoilo was born 04-12-12 and is a polled son of Crick Ridge Visanti, who in turn is a son of SNF Jackson 902J. Zoilo is a third generation performance tested bull. He had an 82 pound birth weight and his weaning weight was 543 pounds, with an adjusted 205 day weaning weight of 684 pounds. He began the test at a weight of 585 pounds and finished the test weighing 1018 pounds. CRICK RIDGE ZEBULON Crick Ridge Zebulon is the third Normande bull in the sale and was bred by Jeff and Nona Bock. He is sired by Crick Ridge Brutus and was born on 04-1412. Also polled, his birth weight was 83 pounds, his weaning weight was 575 pounds and his 205 adjusted weaning weight was 736 pounds. He began the test weighing 609 pounds, ended at 1028 pounds, and had an average daily gain of 2.99 pounds. More information about the bulls may be obtained from the breeders. If you would like a sale catalog you can request one from Sandy Drinkman at 715-265-4374. All the bulls will be semen tested before the day of the sale and there will be ultra sound information available the day of the sale. And a new feature this year is a short video clip of each of the bulls can be watched by going to: scvbt.com. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ IN MEMORIUM The Normande community has tragically lost a very good Normande breeder. On January 23, 2013, Walter Bittenbender of Gettysburg, PA, died accidentally on his farm. Walter and his surviving wife, Deborah, started their Normande herd in 2002, when they drove to Wisconsin over Thanksgiving weekend to buy four Normande heifers to start their herd. From those four heifers they grew their herd to nearly 30 animals at the time of Walter’s death. Walter and Debby loved their spotted breed and were progressive breeders. They utilized artificial insemination to take advantage of some of the best genetics available, and they provided birth and weaning weights when animals were registered. When their herd reached the size they wanted it to be they sold breeding stock to others. The quality of their herd is best illustrated by the pictures Walter and Debby have provided for the cover of the NANA newsletter and the NANA calendar. Walter was born January 7, 1946, in Hazelton, PA. He was the son of the late Walter and Grace (Brennan) Bittenbender. He served his country in the United States Armed Forces. Walter is survived by his wife, Deborah Lynn (Stone) Bittenbender. The North American Normande Association extends its deepest sympathy to Debby. NOW! All NANA members were sent a letter at the first of the year reminding them 2013 dues were due, if you have not yet paid your dues, please do so right away before you forgetagain. NANA has three main sources of income for its programs-dues, registration fees, and newsletter/calendar advertising. The number of dues paying members and the number of animals registered determines the financial condition of NANA. If you can not remember if you have paid your dues, call the office and leave a message and we will look it up before we get back to you. New to the Board is Heather Ahrens of Hay Springs, NE. She was elected to the Board at the Annual Membership Meeting on September 14, 2012. Former Board member, Darline Nicholson of Elroy, WI, did not seek re-election. Heather and her business partner, Mary Hindman, have a small dairy and beef Normande herd in western Nebraska. The officers of NANA remained the same after the Board met and held their elections. The Board of Directors meets several times during the year. There are two times when the Board meets in a face to face meeting, usually the night before the St. Croix Valley Bull Test Sale and after the Annual Membership Meeting. And if there is a quorum at the NANA Field Day a meeting is held there as well. Otherwise, your Board of Directors has meetings as needed via teleconferences. The teleconference meetings eliminate the necessity of travel and lodging since board members live in four different states. If you have an idea or a concern that you feel would be beneficial to NANA and the Normande breed please feel free to contact one of the Board members to share it with. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ NANA FIELD DAY Field Days have become an effect means of exposing the Normande breed to farmers and individuals who may have developed an interest in the breed. NANA is now looking for a volunteer host for a 2013 Field Day. Yes it is a lot of work getting your farm ready and all, but you get to choose the date since you are the host. The two most recent Field Days have been in Wisconsin. And last year’s Field Day was with a dairy breeder. The Board of Directors would like to see the Field Day move around a little. If you think you might be interested in being a host, contact one of the Directors and we can discuss it further. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& THE NORMANDE STORY By Rhonda Treml-Knebel A couple of years ago my friend, Barb Wogsland and I took our Normandes to the Waupaca County Fair to exhibit them in the open class dairy show. To our surprise we became one of the main attractions at the fair. People would come up to us and tell us they had to come see the new pretty cows they had heard about. After looking at the cows and calves a barrage of questions would follow. Where were they from? Are they all that color? Did they milk well? And how did we get them? After a couple of days the people on our show team were joking that we should have made a tape of the Normande story to save our voices. On Thursday of the week of the fair the Kings Veterans home brings the veterans to visit the fair. That is when I heard a story of the Normandes that went right to my heart. The old gentleman was in a wheel chair being pushed by an aid. When they got by the Normandes he asked her to please stop. I walked over to them to answer their questions. Instead, the old war veteran just looked very long and hard at the Normandes on exhibit. I asked him if he wanted to know what kind of cattle they were. He answered by saying, “No, I know they are French Normandes.” He then proceeded to tell me this story. He said he was a World War II veteran and he had been part of the invasion of Normandy France. He told me the battalion he was in had been wiped out in a battle with the Germans, and he was wounded, as was a buddy with him. He told me the German troops would go through the battle field after the fighting stopped and bayonet any wounded. The man said his buddy told him they should crawl under the legs of a cow that had been killed in the battle. He and his buddy did just that, and as the Germans walked over the battle field they must have thought the cow had fallen on them and they were dead. He said the Germans did not “stick us” and the cow saved their lives. The gentleman said later that night they managed to get back to the American lines and safety. He told me he could not believe there were any cows like these left. He thought they had all been killed in the war The body of the cow he and his buddy had laid under for safety was none other than that of a Normande cow! I never asked the man for his name and he never came back to the fair in the years after that. My friend Barb found the above picture on line and it illustrates graphically the story of the veteran-the body of a Normande cow and an American GI taking cover behind it, something that probably happened quite often during the American liberation of France during World War II. This picture was taken on July 18, 1944, and it was on the road to Periers in Normandy, France. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ HERD SIRES MW ROCKY TITAN 70T CRICK RIDGE FARM TREK 2T DOB: 08-31-07 B.W.: 82 LBS.
