Welcome incoming 4 t grade students
READING
All students entering fourth grade are required to read three books over the summer and of
course they are encouraged to read more. Nonfiction books are equally as important as fiction.
If there is nonfiction topic that interests you. Dive right into any good book! Simply reading
more is the best way to improve your reading skills. Your goal is to read a minimum of 20
minutes every day.
To hold students accountable for their work, please list any books that your child reads during
the summer on the page called, Summer Reading List. There is a link to this list where the
summer reading lists are located.
At the end of the summer, please return this sheet to your child's teacher. You should be
prepared to take Accelerated Reader tests when you return to school or complete a book
report to share with the class.
WRITING
A reading reflection provides a meaningful opportunity to respond to a book as
you are reading it. You can consider your feelings about what you are reading, gather
new insights, and expand your enjoyment. A reading response reflection provides a place for
you to participate with the author and the world he/she has created.
As you are reading, use sticky notes to record your responses to the novel by
noting any questions that you may have, observations made, connections to the characters,
quotes that impress you, images that stick with you, opinions that you develop, or memorable
passages which speak to you personally. There is no limit to the number of notes included, but
one per chapter is the minimum.
MATH
The third graders had a busy year learning new math skills. Mastery of all these skills is
extremely important in order to develop a solid math foundation. The fourth grade math
program will add to what they have learned, so any time spent reinforcing these concepts will
be very beneficial for your child. Each year in school builds on the previous year's skills in math.
All the rising fourth graders should arrive on the first day of school confident in their mastery of
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Please make sure you know your 0-12
multiplication tables fluently.
First requirement
•
All students should have their multiplication tables memorized (0-12)
•
Students will be tested on all multiplication facts the first week of school.
•
Review division and multiplication worksheet facts.
Second requirement
•
Students should complete the attached worksheets
•
Subtraction with regrouping
•
Complete 20 free practice problems at www.ixl.com as often as you can.
After your child has completed the math problems and you feel your child is still struggling on a
certain concept and needs further practice, you can visit some of the following websites or
make up additional problems for practice.
