• The capital of Turkey is Ankara.
• Turkey is bordered by eight countries:
Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
The
Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the
south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and
the Black Sea is to the north.
• Turkey is a republic.

Number of speakers in the world
• Turkish is the official language of the Republic of Turkey
and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
• Turkish is also spoken within communities of the Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) where at
least 20% of the local population speak it.
• Turkish is spoken by 2 million people in Germany due to
a huge Turkish population living there. About 800,000
people in Bulgaria and over a million people in France,
the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom,
and the United States of America also speak Turkish.
• There are also small communities of Turkish speakers
found in Greece, Russia and Azerbaijan.

Religions in Turkey
• 99% of the Turkish population is Muslim.
• The Shia Alevi community, a distinct Muslim
sect, make up 20% of the population.
• The remaining is composed of Orthodox
Christians, Gregorian Christians, Catholic,
Suryani and Protestant Christians, and Jews.

• The Turkish alphabet is a Latin-based alphabet used for writing the
Turkish language, consisting of 29 letters, a certain number of which
(Ç, Ğ, I, İ, Ö, Ş, and Ü) have been modified for the phonetic
requirements of the language.
• Of these 29 letters, 8 are vowels (A, E, I, İ, O, Ö, U, Ü); the 21
others are consonants.
• The letters Q, W, and X of the modern basic Latin alphabet do not
occur in the Turkish alphabet.
