The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. • Turkey is a republic. 4 www.portsmouth.gov.uk Flag of Turkey 5 www.portsmouth.gov.uk Number of speakers in the world • Turkish is the official language of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). • Turkish is also spoken within communities of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) where at least 20% of the local population speak it. • Turkish is spoken by 2 million people in Germany due to a huge Turkish population living there.
