Sidewalks and Boardwalks
Sidewalks: A frequent maintenance activity that takes place throughout the year is sidewalk grinding and panel replacements. Because the
trees are maturing and the roots are growing, a common result is shifting and/or raising of sidewalk panels. Our staff reviews the condition
of sidewalks on a regular basis, and depending on the degree of height
difference in a raised panel, we will either (1) grind it down to remove
the trip hazard or (2) replace the panel entirely. Please exercise caution
when walking on sidewalks that are painted orange, as that is our
staff ’s field marking to identify the sidewalks on the repair list.
Boardwalks: As an accompaniment to the trail system in Celebration,
the boardwalks enhance the walking/biking experience and allow the
trail system to be expanded over canals and waterways. While they
are a beautiful asset to the community and the nature experience,
they can also be
very dangerous when
wet, especially going
around corners.
We posted signs
at the beginning
of most of the
boardwalks to alert
everyone to this
possibility, and we
ask that you exhibit
safe walking/biking
practices. In some cases, it might be best to walk your bicycle around
some curves, especially on the long boardwalk from Artisan Park to
the high school.
What you can do:
• Exercise extreme caution on the boardwalks, especially in the
mornings or anytime it has rained since the boardwalks are very
slippery when wet
• Always be aware of your footing and use the boardwalk hand
railings when necessary
• Contact the District Office if you notice uneven sidewalk panels
Please visit website www.CelebrationCDD.org for more information
related to the maintenance services and activities of the District. You
may also contact us at 407-566-1935 or [email protected]

Celebration Calendar Tells
Community’s Story
By Michael Harford, District 1 County Commissioner
The new 2015-2016 Celebration Community Calendar is a work of
love by coordinator Debie McDonald. The 18-year resident of the
community used her knowledge of the town and the need to track all
its events as a way to give back to charities through the “Celebration
Has Gone to the Dogs” calendar project.
McDonald said that what started as a little project grew as she started
finding sponsors (Celebration pediatrics is the main one), arranging
photos and finding volunteers to
take the pictures and design the
calendar. It continued as it was
printed and distributed for sale
throughout the community.
People in Celebration give back
in so many ways, and she said
she wanted to tell the story of
volunteerism in the community
through the calendar.
That meant recreating the town
seal on the cover with help from
the local bike shop, as well as showcasing dogs that were rescued from
terrible circumstances and others that are known for their work as
therapy dogs and because of weekly visits to “Give Kids the World.”
A photo shoot for a golden doodle named Simba at the local
Chik-fil-A (one of the locations where the calendars can be purchased)
took more than 100 e-mails, two convertibles and closure of the
business, she said.
An offshoot of the project was raising enough money to make sure
that the Osceola County Sheriff ’s Office is able to receive another
bloodhound through the Jimmy Ryce Center. K-9 Tank is featured
in May along with deputies James Scanlan and Jerry Weiland.
The calendar starts in September with Osceola County firefighters
Jason Fisher and Joseph Cole with Madison the Dalmatian along
with Lt. John Crichton and firefighter Richard Fox from Station 72
in Celebration.
Proceeds from the $10 calendars go to charity.
YOU MAY HAVE HEARD some news

lifestyle described in singer Jimmy Buffett's
music -- that’s planned for an area on U.S.

192 west of Celebration. The development
is a sign of vitality for the county’s main
economic engine – the developer says 700 will be employed there
when it is complete with as many as 1,000 construction jobs created
over the course of the project. A 12-acre water park and a central
lagoon licensed for swimming is planned for the 300-acre lifestyle
destination resort with a Margaritaville-branded hotel. Construction
at the old Splendid China site is slated to begin in 2016 and will
include 200,000 square feet of retail space, according to the developer.
HURRICANE SEASON OFFICIALLY ends Nov. 30. While Tropical
Storm Erika never made it Florida, it’s my hope that it caused
everyone to review their emergency plans. You can learn more about

CELEBRATION NEWS - October 2015
CELEBRATION NEWS - October 2015

By Deputy Jerry Weiland, Osceola County Sheriff Office
October is Crime Prevention Month which, by coincidence, is also
when Halloween is celebrated. Many of the crime prevention tips
I provide throughout the year can also be utilized to help protect you
and your children during the Halloween events. This month I’d like
to give some crime prevention reminders and other Halloween specific
advice on how to celebrate both together.
Children and adults look forward to the trick or treating, costumes
and the parties associated with Halloween. This yearly event can be
fraught with fright for parents, with candy given to their kids by
strangers and loads of masked and costumed trick-or-treaters
descending on Celebration walking the streets and knocking at the
door. I ask this question. What other time of the year do you allow
your kids to go to unknown homes and take candy from strangers?
By following a few safety tips you can help ensure safe fun for kids and
candy-givers alike.
• Keep costumes short to
avoid tripping over them.
• Look for brightly colored
costumes, attach reflector
strips to costumes and
bags, and remind trickor-treaters to carry glow
sticks and flashlights.
• If a costume involves any
Deputy Jerry Weiland
sort of fake weapon, make
sure that it is made of a
flexible material such as cardboard or foam. Or, avoid the
whole problem of weapons by challenging your child to design
a costume that is scary without one.
• Remove masks or fake weapons before entering stores. You may
be denied service or asked to leave their premises.
Around Your Home
Trick or Treating
To help ensure that trick-or-treaters, you, and your house stay safe,
remember the following tips.
• Clear your yard and sidewalk of any obstacles or decorations
that may be hard to see in the dark.
• Keep your house well lighted, both inside and out. These lights
also indicate that you’re open to trick or treaters.
• Once you decide to stop giving candy, leave your porch light on,
but place a barrier such as a potted plant, a dog fence or chairs
across the entrance to your porch. Avoid darkening the house.
• Keep your cars locked or parked in the garage. Also keep all
valuables and other enticements out of sight. Also make sure
your homes and garages are locked.
• Get together with your neighbors beforehand and during the
evening to help watch the streets and the areas around each
other’s homes.
• Use caution with candles or other flames. Consider LED
lighting effects.
• Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the Osceola County
Sheriff ’s Office immediately.
Keep in mind the next few tips to make sure your trick-or-treater’s
night in the neighborhood will be safe and fun.
• First and foremost, speak to your kids and explain your safety
rules, expectations and consequences that may occur for unsafe
or illegal behavior.
• Kids should all trick-or-treat in groups. Walking around alone is
never as safe as those in groups, especially after dark. Kids should
be supervised and accompanied by a parent or trusted neighbor.
• Have a plan if your child gets separated from you and your group.
• Cross streets at intersections or use marked crosswalks. Avoid
walking out between parked cars.
• Remind your children not to enter strange houses or cars.
• Remind tweens and teens that nefarious activity will not be
tolerated and that crimes committed while wearing masks can
have increased penalties.
On the Roads
• Always be alert for pedestrians, especially for children running
into the streets.
• Drive Slowly! Keep the radio volume down and the windows
open to hear activities outside the car.
• Obey all traffic laws, but pay particular attention to your speed
and stop completely at stop signs. Yield for pedestrians too.
Costumes
To make sure even the
scariest costumes are safe,
keep the following in mind
when buying or designing
one.
• Use face makeup, it’s
more comfortable and
doesn’t obstruct vision
the way masks can.
• Check to ensure that
costumes are flame-retardant so that young ones are safe
around jack-o’-lanterns, candles, and other flames.
After the Quest for
Candy
After a successful and safe night
around the neighborhood,
remember that the treats still
need scrutiny before anyone
eats them.
• Remind your children not to eat treats until they’ve come home.
To help ensure this, feed them a meal or a substantial snack
before they go out.
• Check all treats at home in a well-lighted place. Be especially
wary of anything that is not wrapped by the factory or that
is no longer sealed.
• Contact the Sheriff ’s Office if anything suspicious is located.
Many of the tips here can be used year round, such as locking your
doors, keeping valuables out of sight, keeping lights on and calling
in suspicious persons. With every person’s help, we can help make
Halloween a safe event for everybody. I will continue reminding
all residents and visitors of these tips throughout the year, especially
as the end of the year holidays approach. In addition, as an effort
to ensure everyone’s safety, extra patrols will be working that night.
Please remember to call in suspicious persons or activity and take
necessary steps to protect yourselves and your property.
Please be safe.

EarthTalk®
E – The Environmental Magazine
Dear Earthtalk: My company talks the talk when it comes to the
environment but could do so much more to reduce paper use.
Do you have any tips to help get the higher-ups on board
to reduce paper use company-wide?
– Elena Sepulveda, White Plains, NY
Cutting back on paper may seem “so 1990s” given the current focus
of environmental organizations on climate change and related global
issues. But reducing paper use is still one of the best ways companies,
government agencies and institutions can help the environment
during the course of day-to-day activities.
Getting a handle on just how much paper your entity could save is
the first step. The non-profit Environmental Paper Network (EPN)—
an umbrella group launched in 2002 and made up of more than
100 organizations working to reduce paper production and consumption and clean up the inefficient yet still expanding paper industry—
makes it easy with its Paper Calculator. The free online tool compares
the environmental impacts of competing paper products and assesses
the larger impacts of paper use.
According to EPN, some of the tangible results of its work include
legal protection for millions of acres of endangered forests, significant
increases in the number of paper-related certifications and forest acres
certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a marked increase
in the number of large companies developing environmental paper
policies, vastly increased availability of genuine environmental papers
for consumers, and increased demand for, and use of, recycled fibers.
EPN also makes available easy-to-read reports outlining the benefits
of making more sustainable paper choices. Showing companies the
economic advantages of reducing their paper usage and greening
other aspects of operations has been key to building EPN’s
membership and expanding its influence overall.
While joining EPN may be more of a commitment than some entities
are willing to make, there are plenty of other free resources to help
reduce paper use and green business operations. The non-profit
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) offers up a plethora
of tips on responsible paper consumption via its Greening Advisor
program. A few examples include more double-sided printing and
the use of smaller type fonts, eliminating paper coffee cups, and
e-billing (invoicing clients via e-mail instead of paper).
NRDC also emphasizes that saving paper helps the bottom line:
“A typical office disposes of about 350 pounds of wastepaper per
employee per year… Identifying ways to reduce paper use can save
money.”
Yet another great resource is the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency’s (EPA’s) WasteWise program, which offers free information
and assistance for corporate environmental sustainability efforts.
Hundreds of companies have already partnered with EPA on the
program. One of the biggest WasteWise partners, Bank of America,
has saved upwards of $1 million annually since syncing up with
the program.

BQ Carpet Cleaning Isn’t Just
About Great Equipment!
Why Use Us:
Our state-of-the-art rotary cleaning system eliminates carpet dirt better than
bi-directional manual extraction methods! Here at BQ Carpet Cleaning,
we make use of a rotary carpet cleaner with high torque motors that rotate
360 degrees to pull up dirt and remove tough stains that traditional manual
wand cleaners miss.
Most of our competitors use bi-directional manual extraction wands
that can only go back and forth, leaving behind more dust and dirt even
after hundreds of cleaning passes. Our rotary cleaners on the other hand,
clean from all directions and require less cleaning passes to remove dirt
in carpeted and upholstered areas. In addition, manual equipment like
bi-directional wands rely much on the strength of the user, as opposed
to rotary cleaners, which have high-power motors that do the job so the
user will not tire easily. Rotary cleaners can also remove tough stains and
deep-seated dirt and grime that most manual cleaners leave behind.
With high-power tools such as our rotary cleaners, we can do the job
better and faster than your typical carpet cleaning service. We do not
only clean your carpets, we restore them like new!
When it comes to choosing a carpet cleaning company, finding the
place with the best equipment won’t necessarily give you the best results.
It takes more than great equipment to properly clean carpets–it takes great
people, too! These complex machines don’t run themselves. That’s why
we hire people who are customer service focused to run our machines,
and then we give them the best training possible so they can take on
any carpet cleaning challenges they might face in your home.
When you bring someone into
your home to clean your carpets,
you want to be sure you are totally comfortable with them. Our employees
are friendly, professional, and they’ll work efficiently to get your carpets
cleaned. Our teams are trained to take care of your home better than if it
was their own. They’ll remove any evidence that they were ever there, with
beautifully restored and spotlessly clean carpets. You’ll appreciate their
service, and want to call us every time that you need your carpets cleaned.
Our goal is to give you such amazing service that you never call a different
carpet cleaning company in Orlando. We want to be your first and only call
for carpet cleaning! Between our fleet of top-of-the-line machinery and the
amazing people running it, we know we can win your business. Give us a call
today or visit our website for a free quote. You’ll be amazed at how affordable
our pricing is for your home or business. We guarantee that when you work
with BQ Carpet Cleaning, you’ll get a beautiful clean every time–guaranteed!

Healthy mouth, Healthy Life: Whiter Teeth!
By Dr. Christopher Russo, DDS
As jack-o-lantern smiles and vampire teeth now reflect the season,
holiday white is soon to follow. Along with holiday gatherings of
friends and family and their many accompanying photos, we dentists
often see a rise in patients interested in teeth whitening.
So, what should you know?
If you stick with major store
brands/professional dental
offices, the treatments are
safe. The occasional symptom
of sensitivity is usually short
lived and can be managed
with a modified protocol. The
degree of effect and how long
it last will vary regardless of
method, depending on tooth
hardness, staining liquids,
foods and frequency of use.
The rinses, toothpastes, etc. ($2 - $15), are going to have the slightest
effect, best used to maintain a color, not to truly change shades.
The “strip” variations can be effective for mild stain ($30 - $60)
and may be a good choice for a little
“freshening” effect. The one appointment treatments offered in dental
offices ($500 - $1000) are very
effective, but may
cause significant
sensitivity, may
result in a brightness

Another professional option is the most common

discounts), is an at home kit utilizing custom trays
worn for anywhere for 30 minutes to overnight.
Though stronger than the store products, different

And as for the mall kiosks and internet whitening lights? You would
be better off waiting for the Great Pumpkin.

Lymphatic Yoga, the brain-body connection
Wednesday, November 4, 4 p.m., Stetson University
By Anne Lucas
In June of this year a truly amazing discovery for long-term health
and vitality was announced at the University of Helsinki. Lymphatic
vessels were found in the central nervous system where they were not
known to exist. This brain-body connection raises the possibility that
lymphatic clearance of the brain will be important in the study and
treatment of neuro-immunological diseases, cancer and in conditions
characterized by the accumulation of proteins, for example
Alzheimer’s disease.
Lymphatic Yoga is the ideal exercise for all mature adults because it is
well established as the one effective way to deal with chronic diseases,
arthritis, and autoimmune conditions, and it is not stressful as many
other Yoga practices are. With the establishment of the brain-body
connection via the lymphatic system, this practice is even more
important for adults. The emphasis in Lymphatic Yoga is gentle
movement because the lymph system is delicate, and intense deep
breathing to increase the flow of lymph to the entire body.
Orlando boasts premier lymphatic Yoga instruction, under the
direction of Edely Wallace, E-RYT, CYT, CDT, MLD, MT, at Yogamatrix
studio in Dr. Phillips. Edely was introduced to yoga when she faced
a daunting recovery from a crippling accident. She was in a serious
road accident in her native Brazil, one that took the lives of more
than thirty people, in the 1980s. Faced with multiple fractures,
surgeries and ensuing complications she dedicated the next five
years of her life to an intense study of Yoga which helped in her
recovery. She studied with the famous
author and Yoga teacher Andre Van
Lysebeth in Brussels. She is certified as
a Lymph Therapist by both the renowned
medical “Foldi Clinic” (CDT) in Germany
and the traditional “Vodder School”
(MLD) method in Austria under
Hildegard Wittlinger. For over twenty years, she has been studying
lymph therapy and combining Yoga and Lymphatic drainage.
Her passion for Lymphatic Yoga becomes evident in the enthusiastic,
profound, gentle but precise way she and her instructors lead classes,
establishing an environment of confidence, well-being and contagious
joy in all who follow her teachings.
As a geriatric care manager I always preached Yoga – to others for balance, flexibility, and focus, but it was not until I had to fight
my way through an autoimmune disease that I took my own advice.
Lymphatic Yoga classes are the single most important thing I have
done for my health in my search for well-being.
Help me welcome Edely and her team to Celebration. You can have
a sneak preview about this practice in the Slow Medicine class at
Stetson Lifelong, Session 2, and/or join us for Edely’s presentation
in the Stetson Atrium on November 4. This free lecture is open to
Stetson members and their guests.

A New View
“Thriving In Place” Opens to Change Lives
By Eileen Crawford, LMHC
Whether you are new to Celebration or have been here from
the beginning, you know how truly unique this community is.
While some of that is by design, any community’s health lies
in the collective heartbeat created by its residents.
Celebration’s heart has always been strong. During the
hurricane summer of 2004, we opened our doors to
our Osceola County neighbors who were hardest hit,
offering help in countless ways. Acts of kindness and
giving abound here – but none may prove greater than
what is happening this month.
On October 15, The Celebration Foundation officially
opens “Thriving In Place” (TIP), an ambitious initiative
that re-shapes
what it means to live in a
fully inclusive community.
Based on Beacon Hill
Village, founded in 2001
in Boston, TIP is a program
for aging and disabled
community members that
is brought to them by their
neighbors. Its goal is to
provide a path to solve
daily living problems that threaten their
ability to stay in their homes. From
morning wellness phone checks to
companion visits, handyman services,
errand assistance,
and courtesy transportation within
Celebration, TIP
improves not just the
lives of its members,
but caretakers and loved ones on whom
they have been relying for assistance.
For just $1 a day, those who need services
can call one central number to schedule
volunteers to assist with a wide variety of tasks in the home. In
addition, members enjoy weekly lunches, monthly Lunch ’n Learns,
and reduced tickets for the Foundation’s successful Concert Series.
While sponsored by The Celebration Foundation, the initiative is
being run by over 50 community volunteers who are dedicated to
helping better the quality of life for their neighbors. To learn more,
call Thriving In Place at (407) 572-9850.
With Thriving In Place, Celebration showcases to the nation that
we are as beautiful on the inside as we are on the outside.

Celebration family earns their VoluntEARS
What do you get when you
have a pair of Walt Disney
World employees, who love
what they do and instill the
importance of volunteerism
in their sons?
You get the first ever Walt
Disney World VoluntEAR
family of the Year.
Celebration residents Danielle and John Warner, along with their
sons David and Patrick, picked up the honor this past spring.
Cast Members (as Disney employees are referred to) Danielle and
John have always taught their twin sons the importance of helping
out and giving back to the community. Whether it is their time at the
National Family Volunteer day at Orlando Neighborhood Improvement Corporation or giving back to such organizations as Celebration
34747, the Warners have earned their EARS as a family. “The boys
really get what volunteering is about. It’s really a lot of fun to do
different events with the community,” said John. Hopefully we’ve
instilled that in them, that as they get older, they will continue to
do it.”
“Our Cast Members love to volunteer with their
families,” said Nancy Giduski, director of Walt
Disney World Corporate Citizenship.
As a result of the honor, Disney donated $2,500 to
the nonprofit of the Warner’s choice, which was
the South East Beagle Rescue. Danielle offered an
explanation as to why they chose the organization:
“We rescued a beagle 14 years ago - Bob (we call him our special needs
puppy) cause he came from a bad situation and because of that - he is
fabulous with people but doesn't do well with other dogs. Three years ago,
we took him to Posh Pooch, he was impressively well-behaved. We strolled
past the South East Beagle Rescue tent and spotted Blossom, a seven year
old senior beagle huddled in a cage at the back. Bob went up to the cage
and instead of barking at her, he sniffed and licked and before I could
‘warn’ the attendant NOT to bring her out in his presence - she did and to our shock, Bob loved her!!!! We were floored! He doesn’t like dogs
- she must be super special! So we adopted her and in the adoption
stipulation they require you take the pup to your vet within the first week
for a clean bill of health - Blossom's came back - positive for heartworm!
The rescue said they'd pick up the costs of the heartworm treatment and
all associated costs! Heartworm treatment is over a couple days and
over $1,000 dollars! (We actually made the trip to the vet with her into
a small family vacation to make sure she knew she was our family!)
Blossom and Bob are two of a kind now - she’s 100% healthy and our
little princess and so to be able to ‘repay’ SEBR for taking care of her is
fabulous and to know that they can now help other precious beagles too
is a warmth in the heart that’s tough to explain!”
Volunteerism is a central and enduring part of Disney’s legacy and
culture. Cast Members and employees around the world give their
time and expertise to brighten the lives of kids and families in need,
and help strengthen communities around the world.
Since the program’s founding in 1983, Disney
VoluntEARS in more than 40 countries have given
over 8 million hours of volunteer service, including
comforting kids during their hospital stays, participating in beach clean ups, and building community
playgrounds.

the events currently scheduled include: a downtown concert, parade, Veterans Day ceremony, town photo and
BBQ.
Downtown Concert
Make plans to join us on Friday,
November 13, as Market Street
comes alive with the sound of
music under the stars. The entertainment kicks off at 6 p.m. with
local artist Zaza, followed by a
return appearance of Ghaleb at
7:30 pm. The concert is sponsored by our friends at Imagination Realty
and the Celebration Parks and Rec Committee.
Ghaleb is a world class
Pop Tenor, Guitarist &
Composer. In 2007 Ghaleb
competed on American
Idol and after battling more
than 140,000 auditions by
other contestants, he was
a winner of the golden
ticket to Hollywood,
where he finished in top 50. Ghaleb was born in Valencia,
Venezuela, where he began learning songs and entertaining friends at family gatherings by the age of four.
Concert Sponsored by:
Parks &
Recreation
At six years old, he was named the winner of the “El
Festival del Niño” (“The Festival of the Child”) celebrated
on Mother’s Day. That was the beginning of his Músical
career. At 12 years of age, Ghaleb began his studies at the
Sebastian Echeveria Lozano School of Music and the
Music Technology School of Valencia. Ghaleb has created
a signature style which combines Latin influences with
an Arabic flavor. He will be joined by violinist virtuoso
Pablo Rivera on the 13th.
Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony
The activities continue on Saturday, November 14 at
9 a.m. with our annual Veterans Day parade. Join us as we
honor the dedicated men and women who have served
our country, as we parade through town. The fun steps
off at Lakeside Park, following a route that includes
Front Street, Market Street and Celebration Avenue.
The parade will end at Founders Park and will immediately be followed by our annual Veterans Day flag
ceremony.
Those interested in participating in this year’s parade
can fill out an application by stopping by Town Hall or
calling the parks and rec department at 407-566-1200.
Applications will be accepted online at celebration.fl.us.
Town Photo and Picnic
After two fun filled days, we are sure you have worked
up an appetite. Join us for the annual Town Picnic at
Lakeside Park beginning at 1 p.m. We are thrilled to have
4Rivers BBQ catering this year’s affair. A valid CROA ID
is required for admission.
Just prior to the picnic at 12:45 p.m. it’s time to capture
our moment in time. We invite all residents to gather at
Lakeside for the annual town photo, so brush those
pearly whites and say… Celebration!

It’s the Great Pumpkin Relay for Life plans
Patch, Celebration
kick-off event
You can talk about Mickey Mouse or even Harry Potter but one thing
everyone in and around Celebration knows about is the PUMPKIN
PATCH in the center of downtown. For going on 14 years it has been
an institution. A sure riot of color that signals cool days are coming,
leaves falling and Christmas almost in sight. Parents come from
Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Lake Mary and even Jacksonville to make
this an annual pilgrimage with their kiddies for that very special
picture by the huge pumpkin or in the not so scary tunnel of fun.
Classes of school kids arrive to pick out their perfect little pumpkin
and get a break from the classroom. Tourists from other countries
are amazed at this bit of quintessential Americana. Best of all, the
pumpkins are freshly cut from patches in New Mexico; you cannot
get better.
The funds raised go to support “Help Now” www.helpnowshelter.org,
a refuge for battered spouses and hurting children. It is the only rape
crisis center in Osceola County. The patch is a major contributor to
their bottom line and it is a community effort. There are no paid
positions making this a true labor of love. Run by the Community
Presbyterian Church and the many willing hands of volunteers.
Town Hall, CHEP Palletes, the CDD, Celebration Sanitation,
Davey Tree Services, the handsome men and beautiful women of
the Osceola County Fire Department, Taylor Rentals and numerous
other volunteers give of their time and talent to make this event
better each year. Mark your calendars for September 27 through
October 31 to add to your family memories. For the kids and adults
alike it is truly a wonderful place. Do not wait until the last minute!
These pumpkins seem to fly off their skids.
Each year, Celebration hosts one of the many world-wide
‘Relay For Life’ events, bringing organizations and residents of
the community together. As part of the American Cancer Society
(ACS), these events make up the largest and most impactful
fundraisers in the fight to end cancer.
The purpose? To celebrate those
who have or currently are battling cancer and their caregivers,
remember loved ones lost, and
take action to finish the fight.
On Thursday, October 22 at 6
p.m., the Celebration Kick-Off
party will take place at Town Hall (851
Celebration Ave, Celebration FL, 34747)
and we would love to see you there.
Bring a friend and learn how you can
positively impact your community.
Help us celebrate with this one-of-a-kind
event and raise funds towards research,
patient care, and finding cures. Together,
we can make a difference.
Please RSVP to attend the Kick-Off party by Monday, October 19
to [email protected]. For more information, you can visit
www.relayforlife.org/celebrationfl.
Town Hall visits Osceola County
First responders
Celebration Town Hall recognized Patriot Day by honoring and saying thank you to the first responders
who keep us safe on a daily basis. Members of the Town Hall Staff visited the Osceola County Fire Rescue
Station 72 in the morning to drop off breakfast and then paid a visit to the Osceola County Sheriff ’s office
to deliver lunch.
Patriot Day or National Day of Remembrance is recognized yearly on September 11 to remember the men
and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the deadly terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Garden Club to welcome
Gaylord Palms horticulturist
By Patricia Alesbury, President
Our Garden Club year got off to a flying start in September with our
Ikebana meeting, thanks to wonderful organization by Judith Rankine
and her team of helpers. Everyone spent time meeting up with old
and new Garden Club friends and learned something about this
fascinating Japanese floral art.
Our October meeting should be special too.
We are delighted to welcome Bethanny Lahey from the
horticulture department
at Gaylord
Palms. If you
have wandered
around the atrium at
Gaylord Palms
you will have
seen the results
of the hard work Bethanny Lahey
of Bethanny and
her team. Bringing bulbs to flower in the spring in
succession is an art in itself. Who else could grow daffodils and narcissi
in Central Florida? The title of Bethanny’s talk is ‘I’m from the North,
what can I grow here in Florida?’ and she will illustrate what you can
grow and also what you cannot grow. So for everyone who yearns to
grow dahlias and hydrangeas, she will have some tips.
So make a date to come and hear Bethanny speak at Heritage Hall
on Wednesday, October 21 at 9:30 a.m. New members are always
very welcome.
We have more exciting meetings and trips planned for the coming
months. See our website for more details.

Don’t forget to get your tickets for the 17th Holiday Home and
Garden tour December 5 - 6.
Look forward to seeing you there!
The Garden Club of Celebration Fall pine straw sale
After the heavy rains of the summer, it is
time to spread a layer of mulch to prevent
moisture loss from the soil by evaporation
during the forthcoming dry months. Pine
straw is an organic material gathered from
the floor of pine woods and is an ideal
mulch for our sandy soil here in Florida.
Mulching reduces the demand for
watering and conserves water that is
applied during irrigation. Mulch helps
keep a more uniform temperature in the
soil and as pine straw decays it improves
soil structure and adds nutrients.
Pine straw mulch should be applied in a layer about 4 inches thick,
one bale of pine straw will cover an area of approximately 4 feet
by 6 feet. It should be replaced or supplemented every six months.
Garden Club sells pine straw mulch in our community twice
a year in March and October.
Each bale costs $4.50 and we offer
free delivery for orders over five bales.
For orders of less than five bales,
there is a delivery charge of $5.
To place your order, please call
Dave Alesbury on 321 939 3603
or e-mail Garden Club at
[email protected]
and send checks to Garden Club of
Celebration, PO Box 470082, Celebration,
Florida 34747. New for this sale, you can
order on-line starting October 1 to get
the sale price of $5, and have delivery within two working days.
http://celebrationgardenclub.org/product/pine-straw-bale/
We will be delivering all other orders between October 19 and
October 23, please order before Friday October 16 to ensure
delivery.

Celebration Foundation Concert Reception
Introduces Concert Series
The 2015 -2016 Celebration Foundation Concert Series was launched
with style at the home of Kathy and Bruce Carlson on Saturday,
September 12. Over 70 guests enjoyed getting back into the spirit
of the concert series by reconnecting and hearing about the bands
scheduled to perform. They were excited to hear about the variety
of music including classical music, country and jazz.
The Series is set to launch on Friday, December 11, 2015 with a
Christmas Concert performed by the Brass Band of Central Florida.
And the series concludes with an energetic performance by NOLA’s
Rebirth Brass Band…“Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,”
says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine.
It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as
everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.”
For more information on the Series and sponsorship information
please visit www.thecelebrationfoundation.org or call 407-566-1234.
All of the concerts will be performed at Community Presbyterian
Church in Celebration.
Eric Jacobsen, already a favorite in Celebration since he performed
with Brooklyn Rider, will be back in town as the conductor of the
Orlando Philharmonic on Friday, January 22, 2016, when they will
perform Beethoven’s Eroica & Piano Concerto #5 (Emporer)) with
pianist Danill Tsvetkov.
The talented students of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra
will be performing on Sunday, February 21, 2016. The FSYO aims to
educate and inspire Central Florida’s top young musicians. They are
grateful for the opportunity to strengthen their musical talents by
performing in front of a large audience.
The Honeycutters will be taking the stage on Saturday, March 19, 2016
in Celebration. They reflect the more diverse offerings the Concert
Series has offered in the last year to include other genres of music
our audience has requested.
Celebration Memorial
Garden Remembrance
Saturday, November 21,
11 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. at the Memorial Garden
The Vision of the
Memorial Garden is to
enable reflection on
Celebration’s concern for
family, creative beauty,
harmony and reverence
for life. This has been
carried out by the use
of beautiful landscaping,
walking paths and
private rest areas inviting reflection. Even the circular design evokes
thoughts of the circle of life. The Memorial Garden’s focal point
is the area where 12 pillars have been erected. Each pillar displays
plaques engraved with the names of individuals who are no longer
with us.
Join us on Saturday, November 21, as we spend time in remembrance and reflection of those we have loved and lost.

Borrowing the phrase used
by the King of Siam in the
Rodgers & Hammerstein
musical The King and I,
planning for our golden
years can be “a puzzlement”!
What’s the best way to have
our money work for us
through retirement?
What legal directives need
to be in place to protect both
our assets and our heirs?
How do we go about finding
the care providers we would need should our health become
an issue? What options do we have for living arrangements
once staying in our own home becomes too much of a challenge?
“Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera…”
These questions and more were answered by a panel of experts at
the September Lunch and Learn program sponsored by Thriving
in Place. The guest speakers included: Scott E. Cadwell of Cadwell
Wealth Management Group, Diane Reynolds of FHL Care
Management LLC, Ken Lyons of the Good Samaritan Society and
Attorney Silvia Ibanez. Each professional shared their thoughts on
the various kinds of issues we will face as we grow older as well as
the tools we will need to navigate through the maze of decisions.
Our “Strategies for Success Aging” series will continue in
November when Scott Cadwell returns joined by other experts
in the field of Financial Planning. You won’t want to miss this
informative program that will feature tips on how to insure your
financial freedom. So mark your calendar and be sure to bring
your questions and appetite!

Bookmark Buddies, a magical innovation
By Jim MacGregor
In 2003 Osceola County was faced with a great
challenge. Hundreds of students would be
retained at third grade because of new state rules
that required passing the state reading test to
move on to fourth grade. Osceola County and
Dade County had the greatest percentage of students in Florida for whom English was a second
language. Passing the reading test would be very
difficult.
Bookmark Buddies spend 30 minutes a week helping
to improve reading and analyzing reading materials.
The program is a powerful motivator to encourage
the kids to read more at home. Just before the winter
break there is a celebration of reading and each
of the students receive a little bear to read to over
the vacation. These students are not non-readers.
Often they can say all of the words correctly but are
not understanding what they have read. The mentor
role is sometimes challenging but is always very
fulfilling.
With disaster looming on the horizon, a plan was
born to help a handful of kids in just five schools improve their
reading skills. The school district did not have funds to support an
experimental program that may not work. The Osceola Education
Foundation stepped in to initiate the Bookmark Buddies program
in 2003.
Every year there is a need to recruit additional mentors. Those
interested in becoming a Bookmark Buddies mentor, please contact
Jim MacGregor at the Celebration K-8 School at 407-566-2300 or
at [email protected].
Since then, the Bookmark Buddies program has grown to involve
500 students in 26 different schools. The program is entirely funded
with grant monies. The program continues under the sponsorship of
the Osceola Education Foundation and no tax dollars are expended.
There are several contributing agencies that sponsor the program.
All volunteers must be OASIS certified and it is easy. Last year
33 students at the Celebration K-8 School were involved with
the program. All of them passed the state reading test. That is
the magic Bookmark Buddies performed.
The Celebration K-8 School became involved with Bookmark Buddies
three years ago with the leadership of Kathleen Sipio. Currently the
program at the Celebration K-8 School is coordinated by Jim
MacGregor in collaboration with Jamie Domres of the Osceola
Foundation.
What is a Bookmark Buddy? The adult volunteers are called
mentors because that is exactly the role that is performed. It is not
just listening to a third grader read. It is teaching, motivating and
learning to interact with a third grader who needs their help. It is
making a difference, one student at a time.

Off Book Productions Opens Its 11th Season
with Dead Man’s Cell Phone
By: John Maldonado
Celebration High School’s Off Book Productions is proud
to announce that the first show of their 11th season will be
Dead Man’s Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl. The show will be
directed by second year Off Book member, Morgan Tessler.
The story begins with Jean, a mid-aged woman sitting at
a cafe clearly annoyed by the constant ringing of a cell phone.
She realizes that the cell phone belongs to a dead man and
that he will never receive the call. Jean feels an urgency to
answer the cell phone and so takes a message for the dead
man, named Gordon. After reporting the death to authorities
she decides to keep the cell phone and thus keeps Gordon
“alive”. At that moment she commences a journey that leads
her to meet the people that have surrounded this mysterious
man’s life. Throughout, Jean contemplates the man he was
and the impact he has had on these
people.
Author Sarah Ruhl seeds the idea that
all individuals have a unique story.
Witness the clear and gentle insanity of
each character and how they deal with
the questions about Gordon that will
never be answered.
The incredible thing about Dead Man's Cell Phone is that it’s still
relevant today. The play touches upon the increasing use of cell phones
and other technologies that breed compulsions such as constantly
checking text messages, social media and receiving calls. Ruhl proposes
the question of whether technology has the power to isolate or unite
people.
“This show really makes you stop and think about how social
media and the use of cell phones has affected our lives and even
after. The idea that the impact we leave on earth is not only people’s
opinions but even those who have never met us can discover more
about themselves through how we leave our legacy,” says the play’s
director, Morgan Tessler.
The 2015-16 Off Book Company consists of
returning members and new members. Regardless
of membership length, they all collaborate to present
a production that is the fruit of merging abilities
and labors. The goal as a company is to entertain
the audience with a production that will bring
forth respect towards Off Book Productions and
Celebration High School. Even though actors represent the characters
of a play, the theater technicians organize their efforts into creating
the scenery that makes the play come to life, managing the lights
and audio that fortify a performance, gathering the essential props,
and preparing the costumes that sews the play together.
Come and explore the themes found in the unexpectedness of death
and how people can define someone’s legacy. In the case of Gordon,
his intriguing story is left behind with the people who take the time
to call his cell phone.
The show will be on October 23 – 25. Show times are Friday and
Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $8 at the door.
We hope to see you all there!
Upward Basketball and Cheering Season
The Upward basketball and
cheering season begins with evaluations on December 1 and 3 at
the Celebration Middle School
Gym from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
A unique drafting system creates
balanced teams, so all participants
must attend one evaluation. Practices will be held on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings with teams practicing only one night a week
during the season to help ease family stress. There will be one week
of practices on December 15 or 17 prior to Christmas break and
resuming on January 5 or 7, 2016. Games take place on Saturday
mornings beginning on January 9 ending on February 27. Cost is
$95 for the season. Online registration is now open at
http://www.upward.org or www.celebrationcommunitychurch.com.
Last year the league had almost 200 participants in basketball and
cheering so come and join us for another great year.
Upward Sports, the world’s largest Christian sports league for children,
teaches sporting fundamentals in a healthy, competitive environment,
allowing kids to develop skills for the sports arena and values for life.
Upward with almost 500,000 children taking part across the country
last year is based on the Christian principles: good character, integrity,
respect for others and a sense of fair play. The Upward Director of
Celebration is looking for individuals interested in making a positive
impact in the lives of the children and their families by volunteering
as a coach. Coaches will be given unlimited assistance and support
from the leadership of Upward and must pass a background check.

The 2015 Celebration High School Storm Varsity football team has
started the campaign by opening the season with two big wins.
The Storm opened with a 49-0 win at Lake Placid and followed that
road victory up with a 56-0 drubbing of Poinciana in their home
opener. The 2-0 Storm football team has a “lead by example” group
of seniors that hope to accomplish more than any other football
team in Celebration history.
There are eight seniors on the team including three-year captains
Grant Crider and James Allen. The other seniors include Aiden
Searcy, Awni Alshafei, Stefano Saragusa, Chris Parker, Samy Benkirane,
and Jonathan “Jet Life” Escudero. This group hopes to add to the

Stefano Saragusa, back after a one-year hiatus at Haines City High
School, has amassed 219 yards and 6 touchdowns while leading the
district in rushing through the first two games. Saragusa is a powerful
runner and has added a dimension the Storm missed last season
when they started with three wins in the first four contests.
The offensive line, anchored by center Chris Parker, has turned into
a power-rushing group with the addition of Coach Robert Couch.
The Storm have three straight home games upcoming with two
critical district games against East River and Saint Cloud with Ridge
Community coming to town in between. With two wins in district,
the Storm would be the front-runners for their first ever district
championship and playoff appearance. This group of seniors have
already begun to set marks never surpassed and don’t be surprised
if they complete the first-ever run to the Florida State High School
football playoffs.
