Upon completion of this program, participants should
be able to:
• Identify non-glaucomatous optic neuropathies when
evaluating glaucoma; select best therapies for glaucoma
suspects using an evidence-based approach; and
incorporate evidence-based decision-making when
planning cataract surgery in glaucoma patients
• Evaluate medical evidence methodically by an increased
familiarity with recent notable publications
• Evaluate the pros and cons of trabeculectomy as
primary glaucoma procedure, and analyze the risks and
benefits of mini-filter device in filtering procedures
• Define the theoretical and practical approaches to
pediatric corneal disease and cataracts; and analyze
recent clinical trials regarding pediatric corneal diseases
and cataracts
• Describe the basics of low-vision evaluation and
management; and discuss the impact of low vision on
the patient’s quality of life
• Interpret results of corneal topography for refractive
surgery screenings
• Appraise when and how to perform various techniques
for lamellar keratoplasty
• Identify different IOLs for the treatment of cataract
and refractive error; and analyze their indications and
complications
• Incorporate new femtosecond laser technology for the
treatment of cataract and refractive error; and analyze
their indications and complications
• Evaluate each of the 4 femtosecond laser platforms in
order to better decide which is best for their practice
• Diagnose and treat common corneal and ocular surface
diseases using a comprehensive approach

CHALLENGING ENCOUNTERS IN THE
ANTERIOR SEGMENT: WHAT DO YOU DO NEXT?
COU RS E DESCRIPTION
This two-day course is designed for physicians whose
clinical practices include glaucoma, refractive surgery,
pathologies of cornea, and lens. Using an interactive,
case-based approach, the distinguished speakers
will present a variety of vignettes and practice pearls
to illustrate clinical dilemmas in the diagnosis and
management of anterior segment diseases. Day 1 will
focus on glaucoma care and quality of life; Day 2 will
focus on cornea, lens, and refractive surgery.
The topics will include: glaucoma masquerades, recent
glaucoma clinical trials, pediatric anterior segment
surgery, cataract and refractive surgery pearls, highrisk anterior segment surgery, and low vision. A special
presentation will highlight recent notable publications,
while a debate-style forum will elucidate finer points of
different surgical preferences and techniques. Lastly, a
session devoted to vision and quality of life will explore
issues of management endpoint, low vision, and holistic
eye care.
