bleforParkCitiesQuailtodonate$432,000tothe
RollingPlainsQuailResearchFoundationinRoby,
Texasbringingtheir iveyeartotaltoover$1.8million
inPCQdonations.Earlierthisyear,theRPQRFan‐
nouncedplanstoresearchtheeffectsdiseaseandpar‐
asiteshaveonwildquailbycommittingover$2mil‐

Therunningofthe
2011NGSPAQuail
championshipwas
heldagainthisyear
attheLakeMurray
ieldtrialgroundsinArdmore,Oklahoma,Thankfully
thisyearweenjoyedcompletelydifferentweather
conditionsthanthelastfewyears.Westartedwith
chillymorningsandmildafternoonsthe irstthree
days.Followedbyacoupleofwarmtohotdays.Cool‐
ingoffbeforethebigwinterstormwhichblanketed
theregionwithice,sleet,andsnow.Theforecastfor
iceforcedustocanceltheOpenAllAgeandFuturity
stakes.Thisenabledmostoftheparticipantstoget
outbeforetheworstofthestorm;however,fourrigs
goticedandsnowedinandwereunabletoleavefor
ivetosixdays.
Thisyearsentriesof46OpenShootingDogsand40
AmateurShootingDogsisthelargestnumberofen‐
triesatthechampionshipinrecenthistory.Thedraw‐
ingfortheOpenShootingDogwasheldTuesday
eveningattheclubhouse.Thisbuildinghasbeenup‐
datedbytheOklahomaFieldTrialAssociationand
friendswhohavemadepersonaldonations.Theim‐
provementsconsistedofanewbiggerstove,gasheat‐
er,andasinkwithrunningwater.Thesechanges
maketheclubhouseamorecomfortableplaceto
meet,eat,getwarmandsocializewithtalltalesand
storiesofthedaysrunnings.
Thankstoallthejudgesforthehourstheyspentin
thesaddlewiththeirkeeneyesand inaljudgements.

verystrongwhichwaswhatthejudgeswerelooking
fortheentirestake.Veryfewoftheotherdogswere
abletoaccomplishthisasthecoverwasthickonthe
coursethisyear.Texhadfour indswithexcellent
mannersandstylewhichimpressedthejudges.Our
runnerupAlberthadabirddogkindofday!Albert
wasrewardedwith9 indsashemadehiswayaround
thecoursewhichwerealltothefront.Hislackofa
biggerrun,wasinthejudgesmind,onlyduetoso
many inds.Albert’slast indwasa“big,biglimb ind”
andhisstylewasastopnotchonthelastpointasit

OurchampionHankwasatrueShootingdogwithlots
ifpopandstyle.HayleyhandledHanktothreequality
indsashewenttoalloftheplacesthataneffective
dogshouldgo.Allthetimeheusingthewindtohis
advantage.Thejudgesstatedhewasfuntowatchand
thattheyappreciatedthequalityofhischampionship
effort.OurrunneruphandlerJames,hadtoendurea
hugecastonthebreakawaywithOpal,buttheycame
backwithfour indsandtwostopto lushes,earning
hertherunnerupspot.Opalhadahighheadandtail
onher indsthatdisplayedtruechampionshipstyle.
Thejudgeswere“inthefrontoftheirsaddles”enjoying
herperformance.

ThispastweekendIwenttoMojave,Californiafora
FieldTrial.Mygoodfriend,littleJohnDerespini,took
me.WeleftThursdayafternoonandarrivedatthe
groundsabout5Pm,thedriveisabout250miles.We
pulledatrailer,withover200chucker,incrates,
tobeusedfortheFieldTrial.WealsohadourHonda
inthebackofJohn’struck,tobeusedtoplantbirdsfor
thedogs.
Afterarrivingincampweunloadedthebirds,trailer
andHondaandthenvisitedwitholdfriends.TheField
Trialwasbeingheldabout ivemilesoutofCalifornia
City.
About7PMweleftforourMotelroom,theclosesone
wasinMojave,whichisaboutthirty ivemilesaway.
InMojave,therearetworestaurants,aMexicanone
andapizzaparlor.IchosetheMexicanone.Itwasnot
thebestrestaurantIhavebeenin,butnottheworst
either.Afterdinnerweproceededtoourmotelafew
blocksaway.Aftercheckinginandenteringourroom
Idiscoveredanewtoyoneachofourbeds.Itisa8
inchroundfoamrubberpillowaboutthreefeetlong,
anditwascoveredwithcloth.BeingthekidIamIhad
topickmineupandgiveJohnafewgoodwhacks,John
justlaughed,
Johnwasbornin1969.Heisaboutsixfootfourand
weighsclosetofourhundredpounds.John’sfather
wasoneofmyclients.Whenjohnwasayoungboy,
hewouldcomedownandhelpmetraindogsinthe
summer.
Fridaymorningwewereatthegroundsbyseven
readytoplantbirdsandwatchthedogsperform.I
crawledonbehindJohnontheHondaandwewereoff.
Thewindwasblowingaboutthirtymilesanhour,I
hadtoholdontight,asweweregoinguponehill
afteranother,andoveralotofrockpiles.Iwasthat
kidagaindoingwhatIdidforsomanyyears,watching
dogsrunandlookingforbirds.Mydaughterand
grandsonhavetakenoverthebusiness,sotheywere
handlingdogsandthatmadeitevenmoreinteresting.
AboutnoonItoldJohnIhadenoughforoneday.Ifelt
good,butIalsoknewitwastimetoquite.
Thatnightwehaddinneronthegrounds.Itwaspot‐
luckandverytasty.Isataroundandvisitedwith

Saturdaythewindpickedupandblewsteadily,Irode

Saturdaynightwehadacatereddinnerinalargetent
withheatersblowing,goodfood,andgreatcompany.
Agoodtimehadbyall.
Thenextmorningweawoketoaphonemessage,it
wassnowing.Wequicklydressedandwereonour
waytothegrounds.Thefartherwewentthemore
snowontheground.Wearrivedincamp,andout
camemycamera.Thehorsesweresaddled,thedogs
wereonthechainsandeverythingwassettoget
started,butonebigproblem,thefoghadcamein.
Afteranhourofwaitingthesuncameoutandthe
windhadleft,anditwasagreatdaytobealiveand
rundogs.JohnandIwere inishedwithplantingbirds
earlysoweleftbeforethetrialwasover.Ontheway
homewegotaphonecalltellingusoneofourgood
friendshadfallenofhishorseandwasinthehospital.
Laterwelearnedhehadseveralbrokenribsandabro‐
kencollarbone,somuchforFieldTrialing.

inanartilleryunit.HereceivedtheBronzeStarfor
savingwoundedmenunder ireandlaterreceivedthe
PurpleHeartforwoundsfromwhitephosphorous.
Dick,anaccomplishedhorseman,underthedirection
ofGeneralTerryAllenformedacavalryunitwithcap‐
turedGermanhorsesandequipment.Amazingly,Rich
S.Johnsmayhavebeenresponsibleforthelast
mountedcavalrychargeoftheUnitedStatesArmy.At
theendofWorldWarII,hesuccessfullyledacavalry
chargeagainstenemysoldierswhooccupiedamoun‐
taindwelling.
DickJohnslocatedsomeGermanShorthairedPointers
and,betweenengagements,huntedbothpartridges

When Lancer D was retired from ield trial competi‐
tionat6yearsofage,hewasthenumberfourall‐time
producing sire. He sired 25 American Kennel Club
FieldChampions,5AmateurFieldChampions,3show
champions, 2 dual champions, and 2 Canadian Field
Champions. His get includes Frulords Tim, the 1976
GSPCANationalAll‐AgeChampion,EhrlicherAbe,the
1982GSPCANationalAll‐AgeChampion;andLancer’s
RoyalScout,the1982GSPCAGunDogChampion.Am‐
mertal’sLancerDwaselectedtotheGSPCAFieldTrial

Ammertal’s Lancer D had an extensive in luence on
the German Shorthaired Pointer breed not only as a
ield trial dog but also as a sire of winning dogs. His

Male, FDSB # 910791, was bred by Gary Stevens of
Boise, Idaho, the product of a mating of the German
Shorthaired Pointer Club of America (AKC) 1968 Na‐
tional Field Trial Champion Thalberg’s Seagraves
ChaynetoFieldChampionAmmertalsKittVShinback.
Ammertal’s Lancer D, owned by Jim Reed of Boise,
Idaho,andhandledtoallhiswinsbyDaveMcGinnisof
Meridan, Idaho, is one of the all time leading sires in
theGermanShorthairedPointerbreed.
The Field Dog Stud Book re lects that Ammertal’s
LancerDhad15winsinNationalGermanShorthaired
Pointer Association (NGSPA) American Field All‐Age
competition which include winning the 1975 NGSPA
National Championship. His American Field regis‐
tered get re lects 47 dogs with 259 wins and place‐
ments. These wins include a NGSPA Futurity place‐
ment, and ive American Field Champions which in‐
clude Erlicher Abe who won the NGSPA National
Championship in 1980 and 1981 as well as the Na‐
tionalGermanPointing DogAll‐Age Championshipin
1981.
Ammertal’s Lancer D was campaigned extensively in
American Kennel Club competition. He obtained his
Field Championship in 1973, and placed third in the
GermanShorthairedPointerClubofAmerica(GSPCA)

Ho won the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of
America (American Kennel Club) National Futurity in
October 1987, in Ionia, Michigan, followed by a third
placeintheNGSPA(AmericanField)NationalFuturity
in 1988. She attained her AKC Field Championship
titleMay20,1989.
Heide Ho won the NGSPA National Shooting Dog
Championship in 1990; was runner up in the 1992
NGSPANationalShootingDogChampionship;andwas
runnerupinthe1991NGSPARegion7AllAgeCham‐
pionship.Inaddition,shewasHeartofAmericaYoung
DogoftheYearin1987;HeartofAmericaBrokeDog
oftheYearin1989and1990;runnerupAKCAllAge
DogoftheYearin1990;andin1993NGSPATopPro‐
ducingFuturityDamoftheYear.
HeideHoPinehurstwaselectedtotheGermanShort‐
haired Pointer Club of America Hall of Fame in 2006
andwasaninauguralinducteetotheKansasHeritage
HallofFameinAugust2008.
Heide Ho Pinehurst was bred to Seig Heil, owned by
John Nickerson, and a litter of six males and six fe‐
males were whelped July 10, 1988, producing 5 ield
trialdogs:BluemaxSpit ire;BluemaxSalleyVonHoff‐
man, Bluemax Ice Man, Bluemax Sadie Hawkins, and
Bluemax Pharlpa’s Revenge. All ive attained their
AKC Field Championship title with Bluemax Spit ire
and Bluemax Pharlap’s Revenge attaining their AKC
Amateur Field Championship titles. Bluemax Spit ire
won or placed in 24 hour stakes which include win‐
ning six National Championship titles with numerous
“DogoftheYear”honors.BluemaxSallyVonHoffman
placedintheAKCNationalAllAgeChampionshipand
the Region 5 All Age Championship, and Bluemax Ice
ManwasrunnerupintheRegion8AmateurChampi‐
onship.

whodecidedtothrowtheirhatsintothering.Inaddition,wewere inallyabletosecurethebioforMikeKirkman

I’vebeenaroundGermanShorthairedPointersallmy
life;myfamilyalwayshadatleastoneShorthairasa
petandforbirdhunting.Myfatherwasanavidhunter
andwewereinthe ieldwithourShorthairsatvery
opportunitywehad.
Ipurchasedandtrainedmy irstShorthairatfourteen
andhavepersonaltrainedallofmyhuntingdogssince
then.WhileIhavealwaysbeenveryinvolvedinhunt‐
ingaspectsofthebreed,Ididn’tbecomeactiveinthe
variousAKCvenuesuntil2002.
Since2002,IhavebeeninvolvedinmanyoftheAKC
events,but,myprimaryfocushasbeeninthehunting
area,alongwiththeshowcompetition.Tome,it’sall
aboutthedogsandmygreatestjoyistobeinthe ield
withthedogs,doingwhattheywerebredtodo.Ihave

workedasapatrolof icerinAstoriaQueensandthen

IworkedinWashingtonHeightsManhattaninthenar‐
coticsdivision.Iworkedthereforabout6yearsbefore
transferringbacktothe71beforeretiringin2002.
AfterretiringIgotrightbackintodogswiththesup‐
portofmyfamily.Whileshowingdogsatalocalshow
bothmywifeandIwereluckytomeetabreederwho
hadabeautifulliverbitchforsalewhichIpurchased
asmy irstShorthair.SincethenIhavebecomeaJun‐
iorShowmanshipjudge,HuntTestjudgeandaCGC
Evaluator.IamthecurrentPresidentoftheLongIs‐
landGermanShorthairedPointerclubforthelast5
years,thepreviousVicePresidentoftheLongIsland
DobermanPinscherclub,currentmember,instructor
andAKCK9AmbassadorforSuffolkObedience,cur‐
rentmemberofSHGSPclub,LIHardDogShutzhund
ClubandtwoofmydogsareactiveworkingTherapy
Dogs.ThispastyearIsuccessfullyowner‐handledmy
secondGSPtobecomethe9thGSPGrandChampionin
thecountryand inishedtheyearinthetop25breed
standings.
IhaveastrongbeliefthattheGSPCAisagreatcluband
willcontinuetobecomeabetterclub.IfelectedPresi‐
dentIwillcontinuetolearnandtapthegreat
knowledgepossessedbyitsmembers.Iamveryfamil‐
iarwithanddedicatedtothehealthandlegislativeis‐
suesofourbreedandtothechallengesweasdogown‐
ersandhuntersfaceinthiscountry.BothmysonandI
areavidbirdhuntersandenjoyhuntingwithourdogs.
Ihaveagreatcommitmenttoallaspectsofthisversa‐
tilebreed.AswithmyDobermansIbelieveinthetotal
Shorthairnotjustoneaspect.Thisbreedisnotjusta
showdogorahunting/ ielddogandIbelievethatthe
clubneedstoembracethat.Iamcommittedtothe
healthofourbreedandhonestyofourbreedingpro‐
grams.
IfeelthatthenumberonejobofthePresidentisto
upholdourConstitutionandBy‐Lawsandnottoset
policy.IthinktheConstitutionneedstobereviewed
andchangessuggestedforthebene itofallmembers
oftheGSPCA.Webelongtoaclubandneedtoenjoy
allthebene itsofthatclubequally.IbelieveIcan
bringafreshperspectivetotheboard.Myphoneis
alwaysonandIcanbeapproachedanywhere,anytime
tospeakaboutanythingpertainingtotheGSP.

upinafamilyofDobermanbreeders.Istartedshow‐
ingdogsattheageof10andwasexposedtomanyas‐
pectsofthedogworldincludingshutzhundandobedi‐
ence.Attheageof ifteenIpurchasedmy irstshow
dogandwascommitted.WhileinhighschoolIcontin‐
uedshowingandtrainingdogs,Iworkedasatrainer
forSentrydogsthenasaVeterinaryTechnician.Dur‐
ingthattimeImetalocalprofessionalhandlerwho
bredGermanShorthairedPointers.Whileshewas
showingclientdogsIhandledherGSP’sandwas
hookedonthebreed.
AsateenagerIwasthrilledtoreceivealetterfromthe
PresidentoftheDPCAcongratulatingmeonmycom‐
mitmenttothebreed.ThislastspringIwashonoredto
handleafewofhisdogsattheUDCNationals.Ithen

memoriesofthedestroyedfurniture,chewedshoes,
hats,andsheetrockquicklyfadedwhenhelearnedto
behaveafterwebroughthomeafriendforhimnamed
Sasha.ImissBudtothisday,buthavehadthejoyand
heartacheoflovingmanymoresincethen.Mylovefor
thosedogsandourbreedingeneraldrivesmetowork
forthebene itofotherGSPsasmuchasIcan.Ican’t
standtothinkofanyoneofthemunhappy,sickorne‐
glected.Thatmakesmepassionateaboutthehealthof
ourbreedonissuesthataffectthedailyqualityoflife
ofourdogs,andthedogsyettocome.

somepersonalsuccessinbreedingandcompetition
withmydogs,allownertrainedandhandled.The
CladdaghringstandsforFriendship,LoveandLoyalty,
whichaccuratelydescribeswhatourGSPsgiveuseve‐
ryday,soIthoughtitwastheperfectkennelname.
Overthelasttwentyyearsmydogshaveearnedthe
followingtitles:JH,CGC,TDI,RN,RA,RE,CD,CH,GCH,
evenacoupleof ieldtrialpointsontwoofthem.I

couragedtotakeonseveralleadershippositions.For

TheLIGSPCisaveryactiveclub!WearealsoaDemo‐

Peoplewhoknowme,knowthatIamextremelypas‐
sionateabouttheGSPandtheprogramsthatsupport
ourversatilebreed.Withthatinmind,GSPCAmem‐
bersinmyregion,aswellasothersacrossthecountry
haveencouragedmetorunforthepositionofNorth
EastDirectoroftheGSPCAIbelievemybackground,
experiences,desiretodothebestforthisbreed,and
enthusiasmforclubactivitieswillbeanassetinthis
position.Ihopeafteryoulearnmoreaboutmeinthis
biothatyouwillagree.
In1988,Iwassomewhatreluctantlyintroducedtothe
GermanShorthairedPointer.Myboyfriendatthetime
(nowmyhusbandof22years)hadjustgottenahouse
ofhisownwithanicesizedyard.Ithoughtthiswould
betheperfecttimetoaddaGoldenRetrievertoour
lives.Ilivedinanapartment,sothisdogwouldbe
moreJoe’sthanmine,whichunfortunatelyformegave
melimitedinputJ.Joewasanavidhunter,buthehad
neverbeena“dogperson”.He inallyagreedtogeta
dog,butmadeitclearthathewouldonlyconsidera
GSP.Whenheshowedmeaphotoofone,itwasde i‐
nitelynothingatalllikeaGolden!Iadmititwasnot
