Knight Moves KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HOLY NAME OF JESUS COUNCIL 11886 Volume 20 Issue 1 Kingston Mills September 2016 20th ANNIVERSARY OF THE COUNCIL CHARTER The council received its Charter on 6 November 1996 and since that time has been an essential pillar in maintaining Holy Name of Jesus Parish. In recent years the council from Holy Family Chapel CFB Kingston amalgamated with Holy Name Council. It’s members complete a similar role in providing support direct to the Base Chapel priests and parish community. During this year there will no doubt be much fanfare regarding the history and accomplishments of the council and its Base Chapel round table. It is fitting that to begin this 20th year celebration the council was selected for the STAR COUNCIL award due in part to the recruiting efforts of our current Grand Knight George “Scotty” Smith. The final touches are being confirmed regarding the Anniversary Banquet which will be held Saturday evening 5 November 2016 at Rideau Acres. All current council members and their guests will be welcome as well as former council Knights who helped contribute to the 20 years of accomplishments. There will be more information being announced shortly regarding tickets and final pricing. Please refer to our website for details or for those with no internet, come out to the October meeting or call another Knight for details. KNIGHTS STATE LOTTERY You will recall from the June edition the wonderful support the Council received from Dave Bennett and the employees at Valu-Mart in allowing us to set up for a weekend sales blitz by Brother Mike Stenson and his grand-daughter Marissa and several other Knights. Peter Splinter, Roger Levac and Pat Stenson also contributed greatly to the sales effort through their own efforts. In the end the following people won prizes by participating in the State Lottery. Mrs B Dunlop, Donna Grasspoole, Pat Stenson, and Suzanne Long. Hopefully they have all been contacted by now and have their prizes. That marks the end of our council’s participation in the State Lottery as it has been shown that our valuable volunteer efforts can have greater effect in support of local activities. RAISE THE ROOF - EVENTS SK Guy Lahaie, SK Jean Pellerin (jr) and many other volunteers from the Knights, the CWL and the Parish, rallied to host a Parish Spaghetti Supper, which resulted in raising $1339.82 after expenses of which the majority is being allocated to the Holy Name of Jesus Roof project. Guy Lahaie has again offered is culinary talents and is preparing Chili for bulk purchase. K N I GH T M OV E S PA G E 1 YEAR END BBQ Our 19th year ended with a summer BBQ on the parish grounds. Great weather, good friends and excellent food were all coordinated as our tradition by the Past Grand Knight, Jean J Pellerin. Among the various activities Carol Pellerin (Jean Senior) had the correct guess for the Jelly Bean Count. While Jean was overjoyed with the Habs cup and the Jelly Beans Carol safely secured the real prize winnings. Our newest Knight Brother Robert Charet (this was the final Knight needed to secure the Star Council award) was also recognized Robert had been recently awarded a City of Kingston certificate of recognition for his six years of dedication to the continuous clean up of Highway 15. That would be considered worthy recognition for any citizen; yet, Brother Robert persevered in this devotion with the physical aid of a walker, crutches and plenty of determination. We welcome Robert to the council and our Highway clean up crew even if the rest of us only do it twice a year/ GRAND KNIGHT MESSAGE Brothers, I hope you spent quality time with family and friends and enjoyed your Summer Break to the fullest. The weather certainly was agreeable and made travelling so much more pleasant. Time spent in the fashion is always very rewarding. Chris and I will do our travelling at the end of September, when we will go down to Halifax to visit her brother, Brother Hudson MacIsaac, who is a Knight from Judique, Cape Breton. We will also get the opportunity to visit with her other brother, Charlie MacIsaac, who help us here a couple of years ago with a Council Highway Cleanup, when he was visiting us here in Kingston. It is time once again to get back to performing our Knights of Columbus commitments for another year. The theme will be the same. Grow our Council Membership. Doing that will bring in more money and that will allow our Council to increase our charitable donations. We will face many challenges in the coming year, demanding more participation from our Council Brothers. Take time for some soul searching and tally up the times you have been physically involved with your Brothers in Council Activities, not just attending Monthly Council Meetings. We have been calling for quite a period of time now, for someone to take over as Editor of Knight Moves, our very informative Newsletter, which not only keeps us up to date with Council News, but gives our very generous sponsors the exposure we promised them. SK Peter Scott, our current Editor, needs a rest and he will only be too glad to give you the tools you required, to carry on this very important Council Function. Please see Peter. Some of our Brothers are already heavily involved in Council activities and commitments. Please their workload by becoming an active Member of Council 11886. Get involved. As you know, when praying the Rosary, Catholics recall the most important events in the lives of Jesus and his Blessed Mother Mary. And of course you know these events are called, ”Mysteries”. The Knights of Columbus always give material and moral support to the Church and her works at all levels, promoting the programs of the Parish and Diocese. This year has been no different in that we feel a responsibility to support those children taking First Communion and Confirmation. On May 8th for two masses, 1:30pm and 3;30 pm; our Council 11886 presented rosaries, pearl for girls ,traditional black to the boys, to 46 children from St. Martha and Holy Name Schools . Our Holy Name of Jesus, Catholic Womens League Members, Jean Richards and Roseanne Hogan assisted by passing out very special prayer cards to each child. The families turn out for these functions in large numbers I can tell you!....and rightfully so. When parents pay attention to the task of loving and nurturing their children as a child of God; they build up the Church. I know the Rosary has had a lasting effect on us Knights of Columbus because it is present in many of our activities; lets hope it does the same for those children.
