JC Maximilian’s Desk “Faith in Our Future”: Progress Report Since the beginning of this year, all 107 parishes in the Diocese of Trenton have been participating in a Diocesan Planning project called, “Faith in Our Future.” The goals of this project are to strengthen and enliven parishes and the ministries of the Diocese, explore new models of leadership in order to meet the challenge of the retirement of a large number of priests and religious in the next 10 years, improve our stewardship of personnel and finances, develop greater collaboration between parishes, and provide for ministry to Spanish-speaking Catholics who are the fasting growing group in the Diocese. The process started with each parish looking at what ministries they were engaged in, their strengths and weaknesses, and what needs they project they are going to have in the next 10 years. Here at Resurrection, the two areas that we identified as places we need to develop are Evangelization and Youth Ministry, and so we are looking at how we can develop these areas so that we will remain a vibrant parish. In March, the parishes of the Diocese were grouped into cohorts, so that a similar evaluation of projected needs could be done for a larger area and to identify areas where parishes could work together. Resurrection Parish is part of Cohort 1, along with Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish and Corpus Christi Parish. The cohort team met numerous times and looked at a large number of areas, such as religious education, adult faith formation, youth ministry, Mass times and attendance, ministries to members of different cultural groups, possible areas of sharing staff, etc. By the end of May, our cohort made our initial recommendations to the Diocesan Planning Commission which included plans to collaborate more especially in religious education, youth ministry, adult faith formation, shared Penance services during Advent and Lent, a common parish Mission, and better coordination of Mass times. In July we received the preliminary recommendations from the Diocesan Planning Commission, which agreed with our plans for a Collaborate Model, but also recommended that our cohort use the “in Solidum” Model. If you don’t know what that means, your in good company; none of us really understood what “in Solidum” means. There is just one paragraph in the Code of Canon Law which covers “in Solidum.” Basically it means that the pastoral care of the three parishes would be entrusted to a team of priests, with none of the priests being the pastor. One priest would be appointed by the Bishop as the moderator of the team, but that would just mean that he would report to the Bishop on the decisions and work of the team. The team of priests would live together (they recommended at St. Casimir’s Rectory). Their rationale includes believing that the team would be better able to address the multicultural needs of the three parishes, would be able to collaborate better in religious education, youth ministry and adult faith formation, and be able to share resources, saving all the parishes money. Since these were only preliminary recommendations, the Cohort Team is now meeting to study these recommendations, and by the end of September submit our response to the Diocesan Planning Commission. After our first meeting, the consensus of the Team was against the “in Solidum” model. The Cohort Team feels that all three parishes have been through a lot of change in the last few years, and such a new model of administration would be too much. We feel it would result in loss of parishioners from all three parishes, and thus income. Also, we believe that all the items mentioned by the Planning Commission could be addressed simply by the Collaborative Model. So the Team is developing a more detailed plan for each of these areas of how we will collaborate. Once the Diocesan Planning Commission receives the responses from all the cohorts by the end of September, they will make their final recommendations to the Bishop by the end of October. The Bishop will announce his final decisions in December, and then the parishes will start implementing the Bishop’s decision in January, 2017. If you wish to read the full preliminary recommendations for our Cohort (or the other cohorts) you can find them at the Diocesan website: http://www.dioceseoftrenton.org/faithinourfuture/. Of course I will keep you up to date as well. If you have comments about the preliminary recommendations for our cohort, please feel free to share them with me or any of the members of our parish’s Core team: Dominic and Lisa Favieri, John Cinti, Donna Malinowski. 542 Page 5 Reflect on the Word of Jesus Christ PARISH CALENDAR 2016-17 July 31, 2016 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Be Rich... in What Matters to God Storing up treasures are we? Are they treasures of man or of God? Think very carefully about this question as it is important to our God, this is what he says to the rich man, “ You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared to whom will they belong? Thus will it be for all who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.” Jesus does not fault him for his industriousness, but for his egoism and selfishness. Like the rich man and Lazarus, he had lost the capacity to be concerned for others. His life was consumed with his possessions and his only interests were in himself. His death was the final loss of his soul! In the parable of the rich fool Jesus gives a lesson on using material possessions. His lesson contains a warning to beware of all covetousness. To covet is to wish to get wrongfully what another possesses or to begrudge what God gave him. Jesus restates the commandment do not covet, but he also states that a person's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. In this little parable Jesus probes the heart - where is your treasure? Treasure has a special connection to the heart, the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on is our highest treasure. What do you treasure most? Adult: Lord, free me from all covetousness. Help me to find pleasure in giving and sharing my time and my belongings. May I wholly desire you and your ways as my treasure. Child: Help me to make good use of all I have. Instead stuffing as much as I can in a closet to collect “things” Remind me to give these to children that would be so happy to have them. 542 It’s that time of year again where we ask you for a calendar of events for the Resurrection Parish Calendar 2016-17. Our next weekend for gathering food is August 7. “As often as you did it for others, you did it for Me.” Page 7 Success!! Indoor Walking at Resurrection Parish Lots of parishioners are enjoying our indoor walking path, we have received lots of good feedback! Mary Wyatt, a 93 year old parishioner was one of the first to walk 21 laps which means she walked over a mile. Congrats! She is spreading the word and others have joined her. If you enjoy walking, or if your doctor recommends that you walk daily for your health, and the weather doesn’t always cooperate, we have a solution! On extreme weather days, you can come to the parish center and walk the perimeter of the gym floor. We won’t use the heat, AC or lights but it will still be better than the outdoors in wind, rain, cold or extreme heat. The sun light coming from the many windows will light your path and you may find some companions there to join you. Twenty laps of the gym equals a little over a mile. The front doors will be unlocked weekdays from 9am to 3pm, enjoy!
