For healthier and more comfortable sleep, vacuum the surface of your mattress and wipe it with a moistened cloth from time to time to remove dust. Leave it to air completely to prevent moisture from damaging it and shortening its usage life. Caring for your mattress 1. Turn your mattress every three months to ensure even wear and longer usage life. Turn it in all directions and flip it over if it is designed to be used on both sides. 2. Do not bend the mattress, jump on it or sit on the edge of the bed for a long time. This can cause structural damage to it. 3. Protect your mattress with a mattress pad. Hold each picture against the wall and mask around the edges. Then stand back and visualise! LINE THEM UP For a professional touch, hang the top edge of your pictures at the same height from the ceiling, or the bottom edge at the same level above the floor. Try to align the pictures with the top of a door or window frame. DIVINE INTERVENTION If you have an 8ft wall, use a pencil to draw a line across it at a height of 5ft. Get organized by first sorting out what you have. Group your possessions into categories such as owner, type, activity and frequency of use. Reduce the stuff you have. Harriet Holmberg, IKEA Malaysia Communication and Interior Design Manager About Crying Bonding as a father Baby-proofing your bedroom Crying facts: • Cries are your baby’s first words. • Newborn babies cry about 2 hours per day. • Crying increases at 2-3 weeks of age. • It peaks at 6-8 weeks and is lowest around 4 months of age. • Babies cry more often late afternoons and early evenings, when they need to release tension after a long day. • • What to do: • First, check that your baby’s basic needs are met: clean diaper, not hungry, not too hot or cold. • If all basics are taken care off, your baby may just feel lonely or the need to blow off steam. What may help: If you put your baby in an infant carrier on the floor with her head gently propped up with a small blanket or a diaper on each side, she gets a better view of you and her surroundings. As you move in and out of her field of vision and talk to her, she comes to understand that sometimes mommy‘s right in front of me and sometimes she‘s not, but either way I‘m safe. Don’t compete with mom: mothers have natural built-in advantages in the bonding process. A father will not bond as quickly and you’ll have to make quality time to bond with your baby. • See eye to eye: eye contact helps you build a bond. Cradle your baby in your arms at about chest level to put your baby at the perfect location for eye contact. • Keep in touch: touch is a very meaningful way to communicate with your baby. Babies love being skin-to-skin. Put your baby on your chest, caress arms, legs, hands and feet. Repeated loving touches will help your baby connect with you better and faster. • Become part of the routine: often, mom tends to be the primary caregiver for your baby. But, many of the parent’s tasks can be taken care of by an interested dad. Bathe your baby, take him for a walk, feed her from time to time. You’ll give that tired mom a break and create new bonding time with your baby. • Connect with music: babies love music and they find a soothing spirit when dad sings and dances with them. Lullabies can be a real bonding experience also, as you sing your baby to sleep. • Be patient through the process: the process of bonding between baby and father is different and takes longer than with the mother. Don’t get discouraged as the process develops. The feelings of bonding are worth the wait and will pay big dividends later. • • • • • • • • Never put pillows, extra bedding or stuffed animals in a crib; babies can suffocate easily and it can happen quickly. Place a rug under the changing table and crib to prevent it from sliding. Keep fans out of your baby’s reach. Install cabinet locks on all ground level cabinets and drawers. If you’re running a bath for your baby, always turn off the hot water first to avoid accidental burning if the baby turns on the water. The best advice: crawl through your own house once, just to see everything from your baby’s level. You will see how many chemicals are in reach, opportunities there are to squeeze fingers between doors and drawers and how many things could fall on your head. Keep small jewellery, perfumes, makeup, belts, scarves and ties out of your baby’s reach. Never allow your baby to sleep with a bib on. Rule of thumb is, store your things close to where they are used. Keep things you see on a daily basis close at hand and seldom used things out of sight. If space is limited, find and create storage space in new locations. A shelf on top of the door, boxes under the bed, hooks behind the door are some good examples. Find new space by creating order in your existing storage units. Keep stuff in their place by using inserts, see through boxes, dividers and other organizers. Storage with closed doors is useful when you want to hide what is inside or keep dust out. Closed storage also gives a calm and tidy impression. If you lack space, choose sliding doors, fabric panels or roller blinds instead of doors. Space above the wardrobe is easily overlooked, but if you have high ceilings, there is often room here for additional storage for things you do not use often. Boxes and baskets with lids usually fit into this space. Label or choose see-through boxes for quick searches of things. Storage boxes with lids protect the contents from dust. They are stackable which helps make the most of your available space. A storage unit on wheels provides flexibility because you can move storage from one place to another and is especially handy in small bedrooms. By limiting the amount and by grouping your decorations, the whole room will feel less cluttered. Choose to display fewer but bigger items, which are easy to keep dust free. BE DIFFERENT THIS PARENT’S DAY Mother’s Day ( May 11 ) : : Father’s Day ( June 15 ) GINGER - GLAZED FILLET OF SALMON WITH WARM POTATO SALAD “ÄPPELKAKA” OR SWEDISH APPLE PIE INGREDIENTS 2 pkts of salmon fillets (4 x 125g) “laxfilé”. 400g potatoes, boiled and sliced. 1 medium-large chinese cabbage, shredded. Salt, black pepper & dill. INGREDIENTS 200g butter. 300g sugar. 5 dl wheat flour. 3 tsp baking soda. 2 coffee spoons vanilla sugar. 6-8 peeled and grated apples. FOR THE GLAZE ½ dl sugar. 1 dl apple cider vinegar. 4 dl chicken stock or suchlike. 50g fresh ginger, peeled and shredded fine. 1 clove of garlic, pressed. 1 tbsp spanish pepper. Corn flour & salt. PROCEDURE Mix the flour and baking soda together and then rub in the butter with your fingertips until it resembles fine bread crumbs. Then mix in the sugar and vanilla sugar. Gather together to create pastry, using a little water to bind the dough if necessary. Knead lightly and roll out the pastry and line the inside of an ovenproof dish, saving enough pastry mixture to cover. Fill the dish with the apples and cover with the remaining pastry. Bake at 250°C for about 25 minutes. Serve with vanilla sauce. 6-8 portions Serves 4 PROCEDURE Melt the sugar to a pale caramel in a saucepan. Add the vinegar and stock. Boil briskly, skim and add the ginger, the garlic and the spanish pepper. Boil for about 15 or 20 minutes. Add salt to taste and thicken to the right consistency with corn flour. Salt the pieces of salmon and put them into an ovenproof dish. Brown in the oven at 200°C for about 8-12 minutes. Brown the potato, leek and chinese cabbage lightly in a little butter over a flow flame. Add salt and pepper to taste. Make a bed of the warm potato salad on the plate, with the salmon on top, and pour the ginger glaze over it. Garnish with a spring of dill. A green vegetable makes a good companion piece. How to make a great cup of coffee/tea with KAFFE coffee/tea maker STEP 1 Remove the plunger and warm the glass coffee pot by rinsing it with hot water. STEP 2 Add ground coffee (preferably coarsely-ground) or tea. STEP 3 Top up with water to a level just below the spout. For the very best flavour, use water which is just a degree or so below boiling. Stir. STEP 4 Put the plunger in place, but do not press the filter down. Try out this simple recipe, inspired by Easter and surprise mum and dad with a lovely breakfast in bed, the Swedish way! CRISPBREAD WITH SWEDISH CAVIAR & EGG Serves 2 Easter day has no fixed date, but falls between 22 March and 25 April. The date on which it falls is determined both by the moon, and the church calendar. Easter has become one of the big Swedish culinary festivals, with eggs topping the menu. Eggs in every imaginable form, frequently accompanied by pickled herring. In Sweden as in other parts of Europe, boiled eggs with imaginative painted decorations are a vital part of the Easter table. The origins date back to when the six weeks of Lent prevented the faithful from eating eggs were plentiful. It was also believed that eating eggs would increase strength and fertility. So Easter eggs were painted and given as presents. Painted Easter eggs also hidden somewhere outdoors by “the Easter bunny”. Today, chocolate eggs or decorated paper eggs filled with candy are hidden for kids to find! INGREDIENTS 2 slices of Siljans crispbread (available at IKEA Swedish Specialty Shop RM3.90, 200g). 1 hard-boiled egg, sliced. 1 tube of Kalles Kaviar (available at IKEA Swedish Specialty Shop RM9.90, 190g). Butter. Chives (optional). PROCEDURE Spread the crispbread with butter or margarine, followed by the slices of boiled egg. Squirt the caviar over the eggs. A sprinkle of clipped chives won’t do any harm. Smaklig måltid! Enjoy your meal! 19
