SHINE!
For three days in the spring talented individuals from across
Butler County come together at the Ritz Theatre in Greenville for
a musical celebration of Broadway tunes, pop favorites, classic
country music, and enjoyable fun. Preparation takes months. The
Ritz Players’ annual spring production has become a tradition
you can’t miss and sells out annually. The performances started
in 2006 with Puttin’ on the Ritz, followed by Encore in 2007,
and Shine! in 2008. The production returns to its roots in 2010
with Puttin’ on the Ritz. And you can bet it will be fabulous!
L
Last year the marquee of the Ritz Theatre was
pulled from the Commerce St. skyline in Greenville and cleaned, renovated and refurbished
with new lights. The reds, the blues, the whites
have never been prettier - at least not since it
opened in 1935 as the city’s first movie theatre.
One of the pleasures of living in Greenville is
the chance to enjoy a show at the Ritz, whether
in the summer, spring, or fall. As people line the
sidewalk at the entrance, waiting to purchase
their tickets, you’re reminded of a simpler time,
a time of lights, camera and action; when Hollywood was young and magic danced across
the silver screen.
But now the stage has become the Ritz’s draw
and the Greenville Area Arts Council consistently brings excellent stage productions to the
city. Take a trip back to the swinging 60s of
Frank, Sammy, and Dean with “Rat Pack Encore” on Oct. 20, following the “Cabaret” on
Feb. 15, 2010, and the rock musical “ABBAMania” on March 8, 2010. And there’s the annual Ritz Players production to look forward to
in the spring as well.
Butler County might not be the birthplace of
country music, but certainly its most famous
native son, Hank Williams, had a big impact
arts
&
entertainment
on its future, one which still echoes today. Each
year, thousands of Hank Williams fans gather
in Georgiana in June for the annual Hank Williams Sr. Festival. Country music greats, both
past and present, also come to pay homage to
the legendary singer.
The Hank Williams Sr. Boyhood Home and
Museum, open year-round, offers visitors a
look inside a time capsule, featuring show marquees, the church bench where Hank stood to
sing as a small child, and a collection of 78
RPM recordings and albums.
The Edge Theatre in Greenville offers moviegoers great entertainment value at an affordable price. For years, movie fans in Butler
County were forced to make an hour’s long
drive to either Montgomery or Andalusia in order to see the latest Hollywood blockbuster. Not
anymore. The Edge Theatre, off I-65, opened
in 2007 and features eight wall-to-wall movie
screens, stadium seating in all theaters, as well
as Dolby Digital Surround Sound and all the
concessions you can eat.
For information about any of these events or
facilities, contact the Greenville Area Chamber
of Commerce.

HERITAGE
Butler County’s rich history has had an impact on the state of Alabama as Greenville representatives succeeded in helping pass
legislation in 1959 establishing the camellia as the state flower
(above). The county is home to a number of antebellum, southern
mansions, many constructed prior to the Civil War, including the
Henry-Beeland-Stanley home on Commerce St. (left). Over 450
scholars in Butler County and the surrounding areas have benefited from the establishment of the W.O. Parmer Scholarship Trust,
established by the late Greenville businessman in 1934 (bottom,
left). A monument to Confederate solider war dead stands stoically
over Confederate Park across from City Hall, (bottom, right).

Historic homes, churches and cemeteries.
School buildings, theatres, and restored train
depot. And a flower that dots the landscape
and lends beauty to an already beautiful city.
Butler County’s history began with its founding in 1819, named for Capt. William Butler,
who was killed by Indians one-year earlier.
History buffs and enthusiasts can learn more
about Butler County by visiting the Butler County
Historical and Genealogical Society, located in
the Greenville Public Library. The society holds
quarterly meetings on the last Sunday of January, April, July and October. These meetings
are open to the public. Membership is $15 per
family and includes a quarterly newsletter. The
society is operated by volunteers.
Historic downtown Greenville has much to
offer, including the Ritz Theatre. Opened in
1935, the Ritz has undergone extensive interior
renovation and is now used for community concerts, stage productions, beauty pageants and
dance recitals. The marquee was refurbished to
its original 30s-era luster in 2008.
Some of the oldest churches in the county
are situated along Commerce St., the main
thoroughfare downtown, as well as City Hall
and Confederate Park where a 13-foot Con-

federate soldier stands stoic in stone. And to
see how Greenville truly cherishes its historic
structures, be sure and stop by the old train
depot. The Depot, part of the West Commerce
St. Historic District, highlights the role that the
railroad transportation system played in making
Greenville a major regional trade center. For
many years this was the sole shipping point for
a six-county area of south-central Alabama. It is
one of the few remaining brick and stucco depot buildings remaining in south Alabama and
is now home to the Greenville Area Chamber of
Commerce.
Members of the Pioneer Cemetery Preservation Association frequently meet at Pioneer
Cemetery to work on cleaning and repairing
the graves there. The cemetery is the last resting
place for Capt. Butler and many of the county’s
earliest settlers.
And you’ll probably notice that bright, beautiful flower during your tour, the camellia, for
which Greenville is known. The origins of the
state flower had its beginnings in “The Camellia
City.”

LEARNING
Education is an important part of everyday life in Butler
County. Teachers prepare our children at an early age
to appreciate the recognition that comes with graduation, such as at McKenzie School (left), and W.O. Parmer Elementary School (top). Fort Dale Academy hosts
an annual House of Wax, performed by the school’s
eighth graders, where patrons can visit with famous authors, literary characters and historical figures (bottom,
left). Friday night football is always a big event in the
falls with fans coming out to support Greenville High
School (bottom, center), Fort Dale, McKenzie and Butler
County Magnet. Graduation becomes the focal point
in May and GHS (bottom, right) hosts the largest such
ceremony in the county.

Butler County’s leaders and educators are
working hard to bring the best educational opportunities to its children. This can be witnessed
by the ambitious new construction completed in
the county in the past year.
The crown jewel of these projects is the new
Butler County Magnet School. Located in Georgiana, this $12.5 million state-of-the-art structure provides classes for K-12 in one wing, and
grades 7-12 in another wing, all under one roof.
BCMS offers both an advanced magnet curriculum, the first in the tri-county area, and a traditional curriculum to the students served.
In Greenville, W.O. Parmer Elementary,
which serves students K-2, boasts a brand-new
kindergarten building featuring an old-fashioned
“Little Red Schoolhouse” in its front entrance,
new classrooms and a new cafetorium. Catherine Sawicki serves as principal of the school,
which aims to set youngsters on the right educational path early.
The largest school in the county, Greenville
High School, can be seen from I-65, catching
the attention of many travelers with its sprawling
campus. Like the Butler County Magnet School,
the school, helmed by Dr. Charles Farmer, is
housed under one very large roof, offering stu-
dents grades 9-12 both college prep and vocational education curriculums. GHS also provides
students opportunities for their creativity to shine,
through award-winning music, art and drama
programs.
Greenville Middle School, the county’s only
middle school, divided into two schools in the
2009-2010 school year. Alton Abrams serves as
principal of the lower middle school (5th and 6th
grades) while Jai Hill continues as principal of
the upper middle school (7th and 8th grades).
The “two schools in one” is centered on the
unique needs of middle schoolers, and helping
them transition to senior high.
Greenville Elementary School, helmed by Dr.
Tera Simmons, serves the city’s third and fourth
graders.
Ask what the community prides itself most on
in the south Butler town of McKenzie, and the answer is “Our school.” McKenzie School serves
students K-12. This year, the school received
some welcome additions and renovations, providing its students with new science labs, media
center, computer labs, new bathrooms, air conditioning for the gym, and beautification work
on the façade. Principal Randy Williams is the
school’s longtime principal.
Fort Dale Academy, a member of the Alabama Independent School Association, serves
students from K-3 through 12th grade. Marking
its 40th anniversary in 2009, FDA, with David
Brantley as its headmaster, is known for both its
academic excellence and its athletic prowess.
Students have earned many scholarship dollars
and high accolades, while the athletic program
has produced championship teams.
Camellia City Christian Academy is based at
Camellia City Baptist Church in Greenville.
Lurleen B. Wallace Community College –
Greenville Campus continues its growth with
the opening of the Wendell Mitchell Conference
Center in August 2009. High school students can

WORK
Businesses and industries continue to find Butler
County and Greenville as an excellent place to invest resources in. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors ribbon cuttings and grand opening ceremonies
for Chamber members, such as Sonic Drive-in, which
opened in 2008, (top). A number of industries call
Greenville’s Industrial Park home and it is a prime
location that offers quick access to I-65. Butler County’s economic turnaround began in 2003 when both
Hwashin and Hysco, two Tier 1 automobile suppliers
to the Hyundai plant in Montgomery, announced intentions to build plants in Greenville, (bottom).
B
Butler County’s elected officials and leaders
are committed to bringing top quality industry
and businesses to the county, companies that
provide good paying jobs to our citizens and
want to invest in our communities.
The Butler County Commission for Economic
Development’s main goal is to recruit new
industries to the area and is directed by Ricky
McLaney. The organization is funded and
sponsored by all three municipalities, county
government, all banks, both electric providers,
the telephone company, the gas company, the
Butler County Industrial Development Authority, the Butler County Water Authority and both
local hospitals.
Many other local organizations also
promote and encourage job growth, such as
the Butler County Manufacturers Association,
the Butler County Human Resource Managers
Association, the Greenville Area Chamber of
Commerce, and the Greenville Industrial Development Board. Industrial parks in Greenville,
Georgiana and the county, offer industries a

restaurants and hotels, and shopping centers.

But downtown Greenville retains the small
town charm of yesteryear. It’s where all city
and county government business is conducted,
where people flock to worship at the number of
churches alongside Commerce St., and where
small businesses appreciate their customers with
a smile and friendly service. Those interested
in opening a business in downtown Greenville,
should inquire about the new incentive grants

GAMES
What’s to do in Butler County? Plenty. The Greenville Area
Chamber of Commerce sponsors a number of seasonal
events during the year, including its annual Fourth of July
spectacular Celebrate America (top), the annual downtown
Christmas parade, and business after-hours. Baseball and
softball rules the summer and the Greenville Parks & Recreation Department offers leagues for every age group (left).
Greenville is known for its golfing with Cambrian Ridge,
part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (bottom, left) and
the Camellia City Country Club, both located off I-65. After
working up a sweat exercising, children and adults can cool
off at the Greenville YMCA’s new pool (bottom, right).
W
Work is an important part of life, but so is
play. And Butler County residents have a a multitude of activities to choose from year-round.
There’s nothing quite like summer night spent
enjoying a hot dog and iced cold soft drink as
a brilliant barrage of fireworks bursts overhead. The Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce annually hosts Celebrate America on the
Fourth of July at Tiger Stadium in Greenville.
Children love the dunking booth and volleyball
games, while adults enjoy the the leisure of the
lawn chair as a community choir sings patriotic
hymns. During the fall and winter months, the
Chamber also sponsors the Low Country Boil
- all the crawfish, gumbo, and potatoes you
can eat - at the Butler County Fairgrounds, and
people line up in December to get a glimpse of
the colorful floats that take part in the annual
Christmas Parade.
The Butler County Fair, held traditionally
towards the end of September and sponsored
by the Greenville Kiwanis Club, features a host
of rides, nightly performances, and all the good
food you can eat, as well as an exhibit hall and
livestock competition.
activities
Old Time Farm Day, held in October, brings
in thousands of people interested in seeing how
life on a farm was a century ago. Demonstrations include cow milking, mule plowing, blacksmithing, quilting, cross cut sawing and syrup
making, as well as a host of arts and crafts.
Nationally renowned Cambrian Ridge, part
of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, plays host
to a number of tournaments annually. Cambrian Ridge features three, nine-hole courses
(Sherling, Loblolly, and Canyon), and Wednesdays is reserved for the traditional “dog
fight”: nine holes with a cart for less than $20.
Sherling Lake Campgrounds and Park, near
Cambrian Ridge, offers camping and rental
facilities for both travelers and residents looking
for a place to host a big event.
Want to work up a sweat? The Greenville
YMCA is the place to be. The Greenville facility, under management of the Montgomery
YMCA, offers an exercise gym with a range of
weightlifting and cardio equipment, aerobics,
yoga, ballroom dancing, and a host of other

session of the Legislature of Alabama as a State.
The name of Fairfield was first proposed for this
county, but was changed on the passage of the
bill to Butler, in honor of Captain William Butler.
Butler, a native of Virginia, previous member
of Georgia Legislature and captain of Georgia
militia, came to Butler County in search of adventure, but was soon killed by Native Americans
near Butler Springs on the morning of March 20,
1818. Greenville is the county-seat. Other municipalities in Butler County include Georgiana
and McKenzie.

about greenville
Greenville’s original name was Butlerville. After
becoming the County Seat in 1822 its name was
changed to Greenville, in remembrance of the
former locale in South Carolina of many of the
original settlers. Greenville has gained national
attentions of late because it is home to one of the
premier golf courses in the Robert Trent Jones
golf trail, Cambrian Ridge. The clubhouse for
the golf course was built on the highest point
in Butler County. It is also home to the historic
Ritz Theatre and Lurleen B. Wallace Community
College-Greenville. In 2005, the city was spotlighted on an ABC reality television gameshow,
My Kind of Town. Also, a Hollywood feature
film, The Honeydripper, by director/writer John
Sayles and starring Danny Glover, was filmed
in Greenville, Georgiana and Butler County and
premiered in 2007.

about georgiana
Georgiana, the county’s second largest town, was
originally names Pittsville for the Rev. Pitt S. Milner.
The town was later renamed Georgiana after
Milner’s home state of Georgia and his daughter,
Anna. A major tourist attraction for this part of the
state is the boyhood home of Hank Williams, Sr.
whose birthplace is now a full museum dedicated
to the country music legend. Georgiana is home
to the county’s newest K-12 school building. The
Butler County Magnet School opened fall 2009.

about mckenzie
Butler County’s third largest town is McKenzie.
Named for civil engineer, soldier and member of
the Alabama Constitutional Convention, Bethune
Beaton McKenzie, this community is located in
the southern section of Butler County north of the
Butler-Covington county line. McKenzie was born
as a depot stop on the railroad line that extended
to Andalusia. As the railroad was being built, a
settlement sprang up along the line. The people
of McKenzie are known for their community spirit
and that is never more evident than at any function
put on at McKenzie School.

ROOTED IN
HISTORY.
ROOTED IN
STRENGTH.
Just as the mighty oak sends strong roots
deep into the earth to give it stability, so
do our roots go deep in the communities
that we serve. Throughout our 125-year
history, Whitney has relied on a philosophy
of prudent, conservative management
that has served our customers well,
through everything from wartime booms
to economic busts. The result is a solid
capital position and $12 billion in assets.
Strength. Formed by the enduring nature
of our customer relationships. Strength.
Rooted in commitment.

The Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce
is a vital part of the business community. We
have seen growth over the past year in membership, programs and benefits.
The increased number of members generates
more revenue to use for chamber projects and
gives us a stronger voice in efforts to promote
the local economy.
The best explanation for the growth in Greenville and the Chamber of Commerce is the unity
of purpose that exists between the local business community and government leaders. We
are all working together for the same reason:
to improve the economy and quality of life in
Greenville and Butler County.
We invite you to come to Greenville, Alabama
“The Camellia City”... a single destination with
multiple opportunities!
What are some of the things the Chamber offers?
Referral Service: Many calls are received
daily at the local chamber office asking about
all aspects of visiting or living in our area. The
Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce only
gives out the names of our membership. Add
your name to our list.
Business Exposure: Members may bring brochures advertising their business to the Chamber
office for newcomers. Don’t miss the chance to
be in our magazine that we will include in visitor/prospective resident packets that are sent out
all over the United States.
Internet Access: Members of the Greenville
Area Chamber of Commerce who provide us
with their internet address will be automatically
linked through the Chamber site on www.green-
