CULTIVATING THE READERS OF TOMORROW
Book donation to preschoolers TARZAN MBITA
Hundreds of pre-school toddlers in Lwandle
have benefited immensely from the benevolence of book sponsors, who aim to help enhance their visual and literary understanding
of concepts.
According to the donors, Book Dash and Masikhule, the word books, with illustrations, are
age-appropriate and will help promote a culture of reading for the young minds.
On the day of the handover, when beneficiaries met benefactors, the book authors, illustrators, publishers and the facilitators of the
sponsorship mingled with each other and read
the story books to the children.
Children from Somlandela, Sikhuthale and
Lithemba were the beneficiaries on this day.
Books included titles such as Buya Kati,
which is published in IsiXhosa and Bathtub,
in English, which takes children through a
journey of stories of everyday life.
Masikhule is a non-profit organisation
founded about 10 years ago to help with adult
education and empowering women and early
childhood development.
Over the years, the organisation has empowered women by providing essential skills to enable them to help nurture pre-schoolers from
their communities, thus helping them with employment opportunities.
Book Dash is a non-commercial book pub-

Children seldom picked up books, but as they become exposed to them, it helps with development

lisher which has volunteer writers and illustrators and does not hold copyright to the work,
as long as it is not republished for profit.
Arthur Attwell of Book Dash said books
should be children’s best companion.
The authors and illustrators of the company’s books are South African and thus write
local stories that the children can understand
and relate to.
Decorland, a paint company, also sponsors
the books given to the tots.
They have already helped publish about 5 000
books at a cost of more than R100.
“We aim to promote a reading culture...studies have shown that if they are exposed to books
and stories that they understand, children do
not struggle with concepts and reading as they grow up,” said Attwell.
He said the more local stories were
created, the more it would improve
children’s literacy levels.
Sandy Immelman from Masikhule
said it has been noted that children
seldom picked up books, but as they
become exposed to a culture of reading and games their senses get developed and this helps with hand and
mind coordination mobility.
Masikhule trains about 300 women
annually, looks after the needs of almost 2 000 kids from birth to six years
in 30 centres around the province.
Somlandela preschool’s Siphokazi Ntshwanti and Arthur
Attwell from Book Dash help with the book reading.
