future as browser vendors seek to increase security
and performance.
To natively enable adaptive streaming in HTML5 with DRM, all major browsers
are beginning to feature new W3C specifications: Media Source Extensions and
Encrypted Media Extensions. These enable protected MPEG-DASH streams
without the need for plugins.
However, until consumers are using browsers
supporting these extensions across all of their
devices, plugins are still relevant. Currently, this
means providers must use multiple players to reach
the largest audience which lead to inflated setup
and maintenance fees. But how can this be avoided
when costs are a crucial success factor?
