FEATURES
We recently shot a really colourful
commercial for our client, Tastea.
Our challenge was to create the
story through lighting and we knew
some of the scenes were going to
be far-fetched. But we also knew
that as long as we could keep the
lighting real we could keep people
connected to the film.
The entire set was lit with Limelite,
which was amazing. We were in
the middle of a living room and we
had to create a bathroom. We used
Limelite Mosaics hung overhead
and we had Studiolite 855s to fill
the room – just to give it that idea of
natural light coming in.
We shot the whole thing in two
days and these lights were perfect
for it. Everything was easy to adjust
quickly and that was exactly what
we needed.

For us the phrase ‘rugged and
robust equipment’ is music to
our ears. I don’t think we have
ever encountered any piece of kit,
whether it’s a camera, a light or
even a tripod, that has been totally
‘student proof’. They will always
find something that will somehow
slip through the gap. But having
said that, our Limelite equipment
comes extremely close to passing
that acid test. And compared

workshop was about four hours and in the past that
would have been a huge challenge…but now we have
this Limelite system on DMX in a grid and we simply dial in
the cues needed and make sure everyone is comfortable
with the lighting set-up, alongside making sure our
cameras can always catch what they are illustrating. Now
it takes us less than fifteen minutes to change from one
lighting workshop set to another.”
The biggest CL studio is 40’ x 60’. Its lights are all on a
grid system with full DMX control – but the area is split.
But why is excellent studio lighting so important?
Says Adam: “We have two separate sections that we
light in the biggest studio. In one area the instructor will be
speaking but the second area is like a blank canvas area
so workshop delegates can shoot there.
In a recent ‘Critiques’ workshop our instructor did some
shooting using primarily studio strobe and we employed
a completely dialled-in lighting set-up where he was
instructing…so nothing with any harsh shadows. But we
also had to have a shooting side where we needed to
balance his studio lights.
We never want to overpower the light an instructor uses
so we are looking for just a fill. The film we did for that

photographer/videographer must be a master of light.
Lighting conveys mood just like playing music in a
certain key conveys a certain temperament. You can
make a happy girl look sad in the right (or wrong)
lighting, depending on how you look at it.
Lighting is 95% of capturing an image whether moving
or still. How you even light a background is significant in
how someone is going to feel - so where you put that
light on the background is key. You want people to notice
things either deliberately or subliminally. Very few people
have lighting down to a perfect art but you can really tell
with those that do.”

The Pixel is a compact, rugged
300W focusing floodlight with
in-line dimmer designed for a
wide range of photographic &
video lighting applications.
The Pixel features a dedicated,
in-line dimmer and power switch
unit, combining a soft-start on/
off switch, to extend the life of the
bulb, with a rotary dimmer control
providing precise dimming.
The unit can be used on AC
supplies from 117-230V so the
Pixel can be used just about

quick bulb change. The sliding
beam-angle adjuster on the Pixel
gently varies the bulb’s position in
