Cold Storage Facility
CHALLENGE: Energy efficient lighting & management system
SAVINGS: 444,603 kWh and $45,718 in energy & maintenance
OUTCOME: 350 lux average; 400 lux in the coolers & freezers
Site description
Coastal Pacific Xpress is a leading Western Canadian trucking company based in Surrey, BC, that
provides flexible, tailored solutions for temperature-controlled transportation and overnight deliveries.
Founded in 1986, CPx rapidly grew to a fleet that now includes over 350 trucks and 750 trailers.
Primary challenge
CPx’s head office in Surrey included a 90,000 square-foot warehouse which was comprised of two
coolers, two freezers, two warehouse office spaces, racked aisles and staging and loading areas.
Their operation runs 17 hours Monday - Friday, and 11 hours on Saturday. Existing lighting provided
from 100 to 300+ lux and needed to be upgraded without interfering with operations.
Process
After discussing project goals with CPx, ONEnergy performed a walk-through and light audit
of the facility. During the walk-through, we identified areas requiring adjustments and improvements
in order to achieve a more effective light quality throughout.
LED was perfect for this cold-storage location, since the efficacy of LED lighting actually improves in
lower temperatures. Their lack of heat production also relieves the refrigeration units of the need to
combat the heat generated by exothermic HID lighting. In the warehouse office areas with fluorescent
fixtures, ONEnergy did a plug-and-play LED solution.
ONEnergy carried this plug-and-play solution into the head office where all fixtures were retrofitted
with LED tubes that produce the same colour lighting as natural sunlight.
Outcomes
Lighting
Lighting in the coolers was increased to 400 lux and the warehouse and shipping areas were
increased to 350 lux. Dimming levels were tailored according to the activity performed in specified
areas including racked aisles, coolers/freezers, and shipping/loading areas. The head office also has
a much brighter appearance.
Energy
Coastal Pacific Xpress saved 87.5% in energy consumption. This translates to almost $46,000
in energy and maintenance cost savings every year.

Before
After
During the site audit, existing levels were documented
between 100 and 300 lux.
Warehouse and shipping/loading bay areas consistently
averaging 350 lux.
Metal halide light output suffered in the subzero freezer
temperatures.
LEDs thriving in the cold and throwing an average of 400 lux.
