Chief’s Corner
The school year ended this month, and overall, we had a good year with both school districts. The crossing coordinator position at Maine South’s Talcott gate was piloted and from
all the feedback we received, it was a success. We will continue it for the next school year.
We continued to work with both districts on emergency preparedness.
Unfortunately, the City experienced another flash flood on June 26. Our staff was well prepared and overall the recovery efforts went well.
Two people left the organization this month. Fr. Andrew Liaugminas, police chaplain, resigned his position because he is going to study in Rome for the next 3 years. Fr. Andrew
was one of the initial founders or the program. We wish him well in his new endeavors, and
appreciate all the contributions he made to the Department. CSO Bob Penelle retired after
28 years of service to the Department. We thank Bob for all of his service and wish him well
in retirement.
Class 2013-1 graduated from the Citizens Police Academy. Over 15 participated in this program.
Over 500 people participated in our multi-jurisdictional police test at Maine East High School.
Our new process has been very cost effective. The new police officer hiring list should be
posted next month.
The building renovations have been delayed due to the rain. All the permits have been obtained. Once the ground dries out, the sewer work can begin.
The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police had its annual conference this month, and I transitioned from 3rd VP to 2nd VP.
Other activities included the following:
Library Storytime
Senior Breakfast
Farmer’s Market
