This invite came in conjunction with the CEM program taking place in New York City. First, I would like to “Thank” the NY Chapter for inviting and hosting us. It was great to visit with old friends and gave us the opportunity to network with new ones. I have to say they rolled out the “red carpet” for us by serving a 4-course meal, which included NY Strip Steak and a top-shelf bar. Also, we were motivated by the wisdom of the Chairman, as he provided us with his global perceptive on the exhibition industry. Be sure to check IAEM’s website under CEM for more detailed information (www.iaem.org/cem). The Board is very excited about the 2006 holiday charity! We have chosen “Canine Assistants,” a non-profit organization founded in 1991 which trains and provides service dogs. The dogs serve as companions to children and adults with physical disabilities or other special needs. In addition to physically assisting those with disabilities, Canine Assistants service dogs are instrumental in removing many of the barriers people with disabilities face. This charity will allow us to help people by helping animals that are so important to them. Thanks to Yalonde Tanner for chairing this event. The CEM is just one part of IAEM’s commitment to provide members with leadership, service, education and benefits. For those of you who are just becoming members – Welcome – it’s because of you that we continue to strengthen as an organization. We continue to implement and support a variety of activities that enhance the goals that are the foundation of this organization. By staying committed to providing the industry with a competitive edge, and staying abreast in a rapidly evolving industry, we are able to better respond to customer needs by continuing to grow. IAEM is recognized as the premier organization for the exhibition industry – you must get involved in order to appreciate all IAEM has to offer. Make the choice to get involved today! Our Keynote speaker, David Nour, the Managing Partner for the Nour, Group Inc, in Atlanta, GA, touched on this and much more in his presentation on the topic of Relationship Economics™, the art and science of relationships, and was the highlight of the conference. In fact 100% of the attendees survey gave him Excellent or very good marks. One survey respondent stated that “Nour really made me think about who the conference is for: attendees.” Perhaps something we all overlook from time to time. With the beach hundreds of miles away, attendees were instead treated to a good ol mountain BBQ! Many thanks to our “Mountain Bash” sponsors the Chattanooga CVB, Chattanooga Convention Centers, Chattanooga Marriott Hotel and Sticky Fingers Barbeque. Did you know that a room adjacent to a pool is a cabana? That hotel star ratings are set by the Mobil Travel Guide? Do you know who the most important player is in a tradeshow? That the act of soliciting business in the aisle at a tradeshow is known as suit casing. We learned this and many more useful and useless tradeshow tips after our traditional and very competitive round of Tradeshow Jeopardy, which I hosted, perhaps for the last time! This has been a traditionally good team building exercise, at least that’s what it’s supposed to be. The second speaker was Walt McBride, a member of the Governmental Training, Education, and Development Division at the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government. Walt’s topic on Leadership Strategies included many interesting points including, • • • • You’ll be happy to know that the State of the Tradeshow industry is very good, as reported by IAEM President, Steven “Commander Gritz” Hacker. Good leaders have a tolerance for imperfections. Good leaders are trustworthy and develop that trust from shared positive experiences. Good leaders have the ability to clearly see a better way. At its most fundamental level, leadership is about balancing the task to be completed and the relationship with those being led. Planning for this event takes a great deal of time and effort by a number of people. A personal thanks to all those whose efforts made our 15th Annual Classic a success, especially Kathy Rhodes, our wonderful Chapter Administrator, Susan Flynn and Adrienne Moore of the CCVB, Kristina Unger, Gerry Eng and all the IAEM SE Board of Directors for their assistance in putting together the great program. Thanks also to all of our speakers for taking the time to share their experiences and talents with us. I would especially like to thank all of our sponsors, just as the 14 Classics that preceded, this event would not have been possible without their kind generosity and support. As we are all aware, the IAEM SE Chapter is full of great leaders. Walt pointed out that if you do not consider yourself to be a good leader that leadership is a skill you can learn with practice. After a fantastic lunch sponsored by the Chattanooga Marriott Hotel, we re-convened for the afternoon with the wonderful stories as told by Ronda Rich. Ronda is the author of the national best seller, "What Southern Women Know (That Every Woman Should)" and "My Life In The Pits", a humorous, heart-tugging and revealing look at the behind-the-scene life of stock car racing in a way it has never seen before --- through a woman's eyes. Ronda’s stories were fantastic and she received 100% excellent on our attendee survey. She took the life lessons she learned and shared them in an entertaining and thought provoking way. We also learned that Barbara Walters is not a very nice person—(well, sometimes)! I would like to encourage you to make plans to join us for the 16th Annual IAEM Southeastern Classic next August as we head back to the Beach, Perdido Beach, Alabama specifically. I would also like to ask you to forward any good conference topics or speakers to the chapter office for consideration and I welcome you to get more involved in the IAEM SE chapter. Don’t miss next year’s Classic! We concluded the day with IAEM SE long time friend and trade-show industry expert, Bob Dallymeyer speaking on the topic of “Re-Energizing Your Events.” Bob offered decades of industry tips and knowledge including: • If you can’t write your idea on the back of a business card, you haven’t got a clear idea. • Successful marketing to exhibitors, visitors, press, and VIPs requires continuous evaluation and re-charging to meet their changing needs. • According to a recent exhibitor survey by the Jordan Edmiston Group, Inc. (April 2006), leads developed at exhibitions account for 19 percent of their company's total sales -- the bulk of which are generated within nine months after the event. 16th Annual Southeastern Classic Perdido Beach Resort—The Gulf Coast Paradise Orange Beach, AL August 9-11, 2007 4 PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 15TH ANNUAL SOUTHEASTERN CLASSIC Chattanooga, TN SE Classic Door Prizes Gerry Eng GWCC Thanks so much for your generosity to those of you who contributed door prizes to the Classic. Stone Mountain Park Lakemont Course Kathy Brooks Rhodes The Association Group Fourth Annual Jenny Melton Memorial Golf Tournament September 25, 2006 It was a beautiful day for a golf outing. Blue sky, no clouds, and a record sixty one players turned out for the fourth annual Jenny Melton Memorial Golf Tournament. As a result of the generous support of our awesome members, the Chapter will be presenting a $2,500 donation to the Jenny Melton Foundation. Many thanks to the “Flowery Branch Contingent” who made the trip to Stone Mountain on the Jock & Jill’s bus. Butch’s neighbors and friends joined us to make the fourth annual golf tournament the most successful to date. There were prizes for the tournament champions, longest drive, closest to the pin, and raffle prizes. However, the biggest and best sur-PRIZE of the day came when Ken Scurry, President of CCR events took center stage and presented Butch Melton with a $2,500 donation from CCR Events for the Jenny Melton Foundation. CCR EVENTS DONATES $2,500 to The Jenny Melton Foundation Many thanks to Mark Sussman, ACVB and Patrick McGuire, GES for chairing this event. Congratulations to Richard Maples, Rick Rhodes, Kevin Belanger and Al Baumgardner, the Shepard Exposition Services Company Team for taking first place. Thanks to Brandy Jones at the Stone Mountain Lakemont Golf Course for a beautiful outing. Hat’s off to Ken Scurry and the CCR Team for their outstanding support. What a beautiful way to start the tournament. We are fortunate to work in an industry where people truly care about each other, and believe in supporting a good cause. Your generosity and the generosity of CCR events resulted in a total donation of $5,000 to the Foundation. The chapter salutes Josie and Butch Melton, GES for continuing to honor their daughter Jenny’s memory through the Jenny Melton Foundation. The Foundation awards scholarships to high school students who might not otherwise have the means to enroll in college. Over 50 scholarships have been awarded to Hall County and Flowery Branch Students from the Jenny Melton Foundation. We can’t say thank you enough to those of you who have supported Butch and Josie and the Jenny Melton Foundation these past four years. The Jenny Melton Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization housed at the North Georgia Community Foundation. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, please mail your check to the Jenny Melton Foundation, P. O. Box 267, Flowery Branch, GA 30542. Thank you!
