This EX-95 Aged Cow has captured top honors at the Southern Spring National in April, the All-Texas Show in March, and the Southwest Regional Show in Fort Worth in January. In addition, she the 1st Aged Cow at the Midwest Spring Red & White Show this April in Wisconsin. Rae is an Advent from a VG September Storm. The next seven dams are all Excellent tracing back to D R A August 4E-96. Rae was bred by Rob Leach Family in Kansas and is owned by Joseph Osinga and John Koster, both of Texas. Success at the top is nothing new to Rae, she was the All-American Jr. R&W 2-Yr Old in 2009, Nominated All-American R&W 4-Yr Old in 2011, and was Reserve All-American R&W Spring Yearling in 2008. Our thoughts and prayers are with all our friends in the wake of the tornados in Oklahoma and flooding throughout the region. Many of us have visited Oklahoma, especially for the Southern National and been impressed by everyone’s warmth and hospitality. No one can understand the weather. Last year, most of the region was begging for rain, and this year the constant rain has made it hard to plant or harvest hay. Let’s hope the rest of the summer is more kind. The Distinguished Service Award will be bestowed upon a living current or former member, who in the opinion of the Missouri Holstein Association, has rendered outstanding and unselfish service for many years and thereby has made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Holstein breed in Missouri. A new award, the Master Breeder Award recognizes a living current member, or former member, who in the opinion of the Missouri Holstein Association, has consistently bred outstanding animals for many years and thereby has made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Holstein breed in Missouri. Father-son, husband-wife, brother-sister, and other such partnerships or corporations are eligible to be nominated. The applications are available from the Missouri Holstein Association. In addition, three supporting letters are suggested for each nomination. All nominations will be available for consideration for three years. An anonymous committee will select the winner for each award. The complete award application will be due each year on November 1. For more information, contact Jodi Wright, 417-743-2921 or Ray Schooley. 417-859-2594 National Director Notes ... What a difference a few months can make! As we entered the month of April most farms could tell you exactly how much feed they had left and we all wondered what we might feed the cows this year as the drought continued it’s grip on the region. Now as we enter June the farms in our area are inundated with moisture and now we are wondering how we will harvest decent hay and/or silage with saturated ground conditions. If I had to choose I think too much moisture is better then not enough. On the National scene, Holstein is still feeling out how we fit into the new CDCB. As our position was stated earlier we were opposed to this merger for several reasons. First and foremost was the fact that genetic evaluations will now be paid by dairy farmers only instead of all taxpayers in the country. As this had progressed we have not been apprised of our position with the group nor have many questions we’ve asked been answered. Maybe we are wrong but often times when actions seem shady as time goes by you see that your initial gut feeling is right. I hope we are wrong. In closing I was just thinking about the trifecta the Wildcats just pulled off. League Champs in Football, Basketball, and Baseball! It’s great to be a Wildcat. Roy Our sympathy to the Buessing family on the recent passing of Patty’s sister. Current ID Regulations for Animal Disease Traceability & World Dairy Expo This spring USDA announced new regulations for Animal Disease Traceability (ADT), and World Dairy Expo (WDE) released new ID requirements for animals to be allowed on the Expo grounds. This has raised some questions about acceptable forms of official identification and which Holstein USA tag options will meet the requirements. Both announcements involve the use of “840” identification numbers. “840” is the international ID code for the United States, and official identification numbers beginning with these three digits are referred to as “840 numbers”. USDA has mandated that by March 2015, all non-slaughtered animals must have a valid state metal tag, a visible tag bearing a fifteendigit 840 number, or an RFID 840 tag. AllFlex is in the process of designing the current Holstein USA tag to meet the criteria. The two-year time frame should allow most dairy producers to use up their current inventory. So what does this mean for you? If you are currently using RFID 840 tags, nothing needs to be changed, you are already compliant. All animals attending World Dairy Expo this fall will have to be identified by an RFID 840 tag on their health certificates. This will allow the health papers to be checked before the cows leave the trailer, creating another level of biosecurity. Standard visible (non-840) Holstein USA tags will not be an acceptable form of identification for the health papers; however, if your animal is registered by Tag ID she will still need to have her official Holstein USA tags in her ears to get into the show. The solution would be to purchase RFID 840 tags to use on your show animals going to WDE that already have their official Holstein USA tags. The 840 number on the RFID tags will not replace the registration number but it will get you on the grounds in Madison. If you are running low on ear tags, I would recommend ordering the 840 tags. RFID 840’s are the best Tag ID option as they allow for an animal to be traced throughout their entire life. 840 numbers are unique and they simplify the identification process as they allow for an animal to have the same number (Holstein registration, DHIA, vaccination, etc.). Before ordering 840 tags a seven character Premises ID needs to be obtained from your state department of agriculture. If you have any questions about Holstein USA tag options or anything else Holstein-related, don’t hesitate to contact Jenny, Tim, or myself. Richard and Kathy Buessing started the dairy near Axtell in 1971 with 40 cows. Two of their sons, Roger and Roy, returned to the family operation in the early 1990s and purchased the dairy from their parents in 1994. Today Roger, Pam, their children Nicholas and Nathanial along with Roy, Patricia, and their children Christian, Colton, Maryna, Quinn, Aspen, and Blaise all work together to run the dairy and crop operation. The herd has grown to 180 registered Holstein cows and an equal number of replacement heifers. The family also farms about 1,500 acres consisting of alfalfa, corn, soybeans, and wheat. The Buessing family key to running a successful dairy – take care of the cows. Providing for improved cow comfort is the reason for the addition of two freestall barns, modification of the transition and dry cow facility, and construction of a new double 10 parallel milking parlor. In the past three years, the herd has experienced a steady increase in milk production with a current RHA of nearly 24,500 pounds of milk, 800 pounds of fat, and 756 pounds of protein. Average somatic cell count for the last year is 148,000. The family is also involved in their community and active members of St. Michael’s Church. Kathy, Pam, and Patricia have all served as officers of the St. Michael’s Guild. Richard served 9 years on the Dairy Farmers of America board. Roger has served as Grand Knight for the St. Michael’s Knights of Columbus and on other community activities. Roy currently serves on the Holstein Association Board representing Region VII and serving on the Junior Advisory, Nominating, and Show Committees. He is KSU Judging Places 2nd at Richmond Nate, Roger, Nick, Richard & Kathy Buessing accept the Kansas Distinguished Dairy Award. Lynda & Gary Foster also past president and board member of the Kansas Holstein Association. Lynda Davis Foster, Fort Scott, Kansas, was recognized as a Kansas Dairy Leader for 2013 by the Kansas Interbreeds Dairy Cattle Council. The award was presented at the 2013 Kansas Dairy Association Annual Meeting. The Foster herd consists of 145 Holstein milking and dry cows. She and husband Gary also were recognized as 2013 Master Farmer and Master Homemakers by the Kansas State University Research and Extension Service. The Fosters have two sons, Adam and David. David, his wife Addi, and their three daughters farm with Lynda and Gary. Lynda has been active in local, state, and national dairy promotion efforts serving on the Kansas Farm Bureau Dairy Advisory Committee, Dairy Farmers of America various committees, Kansas Dairy Association Board of Directors, National Dairy Promotion and Research Board, Midwest Dairy Association Mo-Kan Division Board, Kansas Dairy Marketing Advisory Board, Kansas Holstein Association Board, Heart of America DHIA, Bourbon County Extension Council, and with local 4-H and church programs. First, I want to thank those who worked to induct me into the Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors. They include Dr. Jim Spain, Jodi Wright, John Meyer, Horace Backus and Dr. Barry Steevens. A big thank you to all of you. Second, we wait with hope and anticipation as T.A. Burgeson and John E. Cooper are being considered for induction into the National Dairy Shrine as Pioneers. If they get in, it will be a great event, in addition it will pave the way for others to be nominated for induction. Those include M.E. Moore, Fred Vesper, Glenn Davis, Scott Meyer, Joe Gemmehe, A.C. Ragsdale and Dr. Marvin Oetting. All of these men are worthy to be in the Dairy Shrine. Next, Missouri Holsteins continues to show it’s impact on the world scene. Brookview Tony Charity, had ABC Homer Sovereign and Fredmar Sir Fobes Triune in her pedigree. Her maternal grandsire, Elevation, had Clyde Hill animals in his pedigree. So Missouri’s influence continues to be revealed. Unfortunately there will be no Clyde Hill book. I simply cannot physically complete the story. Finally, I want to thank those of you who purchased the Missouri 100th Anniversary book and the MFA Sires of Distinction books. I hope you enjoyed reading Missouri history as much as I enjoyed finding that history for you! Don’t forget if you didn’t get a copy for yourself or your loved ones contact Missouri Holstein. Dan Meihak, from the home office, Director Roy Buessing and Field Rep Jenny Iley led the discussion. It was reported that the Association’s operating revenues resulted in a profit of over $600,000 and due to good market growth, the Reserve Fund is not over $23 million. There were questions and discussions about the Dairy Data Alliance and Holstein’s position. Questions also dealt with how registrations may be affected by genomics and the new federal identification requirements. The slate of candidates running for election at the 2013 Holstein Convention was also announced and discussed. There were 39 Holstein members from five states in attendance. Following the discussion, everyone enjoyed pizza. PAGE 12 - MSHN, June 2013 Robthom Carolina Boss-ET 5-Yr Old 1. Roslem Gibson Marcy-ET, Grace Hilgenberg, Neosho; 2. MSHN, June 2013 - PAGE 13 Roundtable Celebrates Spring Show Success The June issue of the Mid-States Roundtable again focuses on the show success from this spring. This discussion features both juniors and adults. Included are Grace Hilgenberg of Neosho, Missouri; David Jones, of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma; Jeff Koster, of Comanche, Texas; Janice Ling of Springfield, Missouri, Alyson Philips of Lingleville, Texas, and Joseph Osinga of Windthorst, Texas. Share some info about your show winning cow. What is her pedigree/production. Do you have any offspring or are you flushing her? Is she homebred or was she purchased? Hilgenberg: Marcy was flushed as a heifer. We are now starting to use them. At State fair this year she will be a fifth freshening 5 year old which is unheard of in the Holstein breed. She has a 2 year old daughter due in September, her 1st calf. Marcy – is a 91 point Gibson out of a 91 point Skybuck which was out of a 90 point Counselor. She is homebred 4 generations with multiple 20,000 lbs plus records in each generation. Jones: She is an Alexander from an Equity dam and is homebred. At 3-02, she is projected to 28,219M 1116F 784P. Compared to herdmates, she is +2900M +130F +7P. Koster: Jazz is out of an 87 point Astronomical out of an 89 point Durham. She has had one bull calf and is bred back to Atwood. We purchased her as a bred heifer at the Klassen Dispersal last fall. Ling: Carolina represents ten generations of Robthom breeding. She is sired by Bosside Ruben-ET from a VG-87 Rudolph. Her next dam is Georgia Integrity EX-91-DOM, who is the dam of Robthom Moscow EX-94. Her third dam is a VG Gold Medal Leadman with over 31,000 pounds of milk. The forth dam is an EX Gold Medal Ned Boy who had many sons in AI. Her fifth dam is a 4E94-GMD Chairman with 232,554 lifetime. Carolina’s sixth dam is Pinky Veematt 4E-92-GMD. Pinky had 5 proven sons in AI including Robthom Premier, who was the number one milk bull in Canada for several years; Royal Veematt, who was the sire of Patty Royal EX-94 and All-American 2-yr-old in 1982. Another son, Robthom Brian was at one time the number one milk bull in Mexico. Pinky’s dam, Janet Voyageur VG-89-GMD had a lifetime of 212,000. Janet too had many sons in AI. Janet was given to me when I was eight, and the start of my herd. Carolina’s lifetime to date is over 209,000, her current record is 10-0 228 26,638 4.7 1259 2.7 720. Her best complete record is 6-7 365 37,541 3.6 1303 3.0 1097. Carolina has yet to have a heifer, but she has four pregnancies by Jasper and one by Windbrook. Philips: We purchased Erabella as a calf. She is a Pine-Tree Sid from a Laurin daughter of Long-Haven Gold Rochelle PAGE 14 - MSHN, June 2013 EX-92. Rochelle was the All-American Spring Yearling in 2008; All-American and All-Canadian Jr. 2-Yr Old in 2009. She was 1st place Spring Yearling at the International Holstein Show in 2008 and also Junior Champion. She was 1st Jr. 2-Yr Old at both the International Holstein Show and the Royal Winter Fair. Rochelle is the 12 generation Excellent. Osinga: She is an Advent x 86 September Storm x 9 generations Excellent which trace back to DRA August. We have daughters by Redliner, Pronto, Redburst, and Goldwyn. I bought her as a first choice heifer at the Burton & Fellers Holiday ET sale. What are some of her past show success? Hilgenberg: She was Grand of the Open and Jr. Show at the 2012 Missouri State Fair. She was also Supreme Champion in Jr. Show. Jones: In 2012, she was 1st place 2-Yr Old at the Tulsa State Fair. She has developed into a much better cow than a heifer. Koster: She was Supreme Champion Heifer at the Heart of Texas Fair Junior Holstein show, Grand Champion at the Ft. Worth Junior Holstein show and Reserve Grand at the Ft. Worth Open Holstein show and Grand Champion at the Southern National Junior Holstein Show. Ling: Carolina was first shown as a 3-yrold. She was Grand at the Ozark Empire Fair and also Futurity Champion. She was shown at Madison in 2009 and again in 2010 on the same lactation. Carolina was Grand at the Missouri State Fair in 2010 and Best Bred and Owned at Southern National. In 2011 Carolina was Grand at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and 1st 125,000 at Southern National. Carolina was shown at the Mid-East Fall National Show 28 days fresh and was 2nd 125,000 in 2012. This year Carolina was Grand at Missouri Spring Show and Res. Grand at the Southern National Spring Show and was Best Bred and Owned. Philips: This year she has been 1st Fall Yearling and Junior Champion at the Southern Spring National Junior Show; the Southwest Regional (Fort Worth) Junior Show; and the All-Texas Junior Show. She was Grand Champion of the 2013 Earth County Show. She was 1st Fall Yearling and Reserve Junior Champion of the Southwest Regional Open Show. She is the 2013 All-Texas Fall Yearling and was the 3rd Fall Yearling at the Southern Spring National Open Show. In 2012, she was the All-Texas Fall Calf. Osinga: She was Res All American Spring yearling 2008. She was 1st Jr 2 Year old plus Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2009. In 2011, she was nominated All American 4 year old. So far in 2013, she was Grand at Fort Worth, Texas State Show, and Southern National. What do you think is your cow’s best trait? Hilgenberg: Her best trait is her balanced temperament. Jones: Definitely her best trait is her rear udder. In addition, I like her length of neck and feminine front. Koster: Her best attribute is her size and stature. Ling: Carolina’s best traits are her udder, and longevity. She is EX-94 3E, 10 years old, and has over 200,000 lbs lifetime milk. Philips: She is often complemented for her depth of rib and silkiness. I really like her overall appearance. Osinga: One of her best traits is her that she breeds back every year. She has been pretty much trouble free and milks with ease. What is your favorite show memory? Hilgenberg: When she won Grand Champion Holstein at the Missouri State Fair in 2012. Jones: It was being able to judge a national show that my father had exhibited in. It’s usually your parents that instill the drive to keep you involved. Koster: High Point of showing was winning Grand and Reserve Grand Champion at this year’s Southern National Junior Show in April. Ling: Winning the 2 Year Old class at the World Dairy Expo in 1982 with Robthom Patty Royal. Philips: When I won the Fort Worth Stock Show, Junior Show for the first time. I was only 9 years old and won with my Spring Yearling, Advent Carol. Osinga: My favorite show winning memory is when she won Intermediate Champion at WDE as a Jr 2 year old. Why is showing important to you? Hilgenberg: It shows improvement of the breed, and gives us ideas for the sires to use. Jones: Showing allows you to be able to visit with friends and people with similar interest. Also to see what daughters of sires are doing. Hopefully, instill an interest in our young people Koster: Showing is important because it is a passion. Ling: Showing is the way we market our cattle, but more importantly it gives us a chance to get off the farm and interact and socialize with our friends in the industry. Philips: It’s been something my family has done for a long time. I grew up doing it and I love it. I want to keep doing it as I get older. Right now I am 14, but I want to go to Oklahoma State University and major in Animal Science and Nutrition. Osinga: Showing cattle is just something that is in you. Meeting people from across the US and talking about cows is just a great thing. Roslem Gibson Marcy-ET EX-90 Owned by Grace Hilgenberg Sooner Alexander Poppy VG-87 Owned by Oklahoma State University How have the challenging dairy economic times affected your dairy? The amount you are able to show? Hilgenberg: It has reduced the number of shows we go to. Jones: It has definitely affected how much we can show. We have had to choose to go to only one state fair. At least for now we can’t pay for a fitter to help at the show. Koster: We have a lot more work to do at home and it is harder to get time away because we try to get by with less people. Ling: We pick and choose our shows a little more and have tried to become more efficient at home. Philips: We have been unable to go to as many shows. We have had to stay home and work more instead of going to some shows. Osinga: The last few years in this dairy economy has been tough. We have had to put up more local feed to cheapen up our feed cost, which just is more time consuming. It makes it more difficult to leave the farm for an extended time. Who is a dairyman that you admire for their ability to develop show animals? Why? Hilgenberg: J.B. Kunkle for the amount of decades he bred quality cows. Jones: I tend to remember the older breeders; they nearly always showed their own animals and had a vision for the type they wanted to develop. We have had many very good Holstein breeders in Oklahoma, but if I had to single out one family it would be the Bayless family. You still see the Bayless prefix in many show cow families today. It’s really nice to still see Norman involved. Koster: My dad is the breeder I admire most. Ling: I have admired Quietcove’s ability to breed and develop show cattle for over 30 years. It all started with Quietcove Valiant Fern. VT-POND-VIEW is the other herd that I admire, as we have bought into several families from that great herd. Philips: Robert Yeoman. We get a lot of animals from him. We can trust has opinion on animals. He will call us from a sale with an animal he thinks we might like, and when we get them we have. Osinga: There are many very good dairymen, but Budjon Farms sure have developed and bred a bunch of show winning cattle. Holstein USA has developed a National Judges list and to be considered to judge a National show, you must be included on the list. What is your opinion of the list? Hilgenberg: We need more good breeders selected to judge and less politics. Jones: It is getting better, as the conference continue. I think there will be more consistency in placing. Koster: I have no problem with the judges list. I think it is a good idea. Ling: I think the Judges list is a wonderful idea because it lets people know who is capable, interested, and willing to put forth the effort to be an effective judge. That is why I went to the Judges conference in Utah the first year of the program. Philips: The Judges List is a good way for the judges to learn more. The training is a good way for them to know what they should be doing at a major show. Osinga: I think it is a good thing that you can pick a judge from the list and knowing he is well fit for the job. What is the biggest advice you would give someone who is just beginning to show? Hilgenberg: It doesn’t cost any less to feed a low quality cow compared to a good cow. Jones: Be determined! If you have a bad day in the show ring always go congratulate the winner, but be resolved to get better. It takes years to develop a good herd. Koster: Advice to new people...Work hard and keep going. Don’t give up because you don’t start at the top. Ling: Spend your money wisely and be careful with whom you take advice from and don’t be afraid to ask several people for opinions. Always start with the Pedigree. Philips: Try your hardest. Take everything you have learned and use it. Osinga: It starts with taking good care of the cattle at home. Then when you get to the show, enjoy your time with great cow people. You make a lot of great friends there.
