Our van stopped in front of a crumbling concrete wall spray
painted with Islamic symbols and stained with bleeding rust. I
slowly opened the car door, its hinges squeaking loudly in protest.
Stepping from the vehicle, I heard the sound of broken shards
of glass crunch under my descending boot along with distant
shouting. The commotion seemed to be coming my way...
19 The Forgotten Christians: Steve Elwart
There has been much attention paid to the plight of Christians in
places like Syria, Iraq and Pakistan. Story after story has been
told of atrocities against these people solely because of their
faith. There is one group, however, from whom we seldom hear.
Those are the Christians of Iran. Fortunately, there are a few
people who have been able to give voice to that forgotten group...

31 The Feasts of Israel: Dr. Chuck Missler
The anti-Semitism of the early Church is one of the great tragedies
of history. While the teachings of Jesus came straight from the
Hebrew Scriptures, a backlash against ritualistic devotion to the
Law developed into a deliberate attempt to steer away from the
Old Testament. Tensions with the Jews led to severe persecution
as the Church became a dominant political institution during
subsequent centuries. A wedge was driven between Jews and
Christians, although both worshipped the God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob. Jewish communities developed a staunch
resistance to Jesus as the Messiah, and Christians lost the
richness of Jewish history and prophecy, the very foundations
of faith in Jesus Christ...

As maturing Christians, we should
find value in diverse views challenging
us to further study and to be open to
additional perspectives. While we may
not agree with all the details in each
article, we see great value in them.
These articles are intended to stimulate
discussion among the Koinonia Institute

FROM THE EDITOR
Ron Matsen
CEO/COO, Koinonia House
I
DEAR
FELLOW BEREANS
n a recent interview, Dr Chuck Missler said, “Having a tradition challenged is
never comfortable and yet essential if we really want to get at the truth
about what happened and what really is going to happen.” Breaking
free from the shackles of emotionally held traditions is always going
to be difficult, especially if you have a personal investment in that belief.
Sadly, tradition has a way of blinding and binding its devotees which
subsequently obscures the pathway to truth. Real discovery is only
possible when we blind our prejudice and allow ourselves to be guided
by facts rather than feelings which opens the door to a whole new way
to viewing Biblical truths and sites.
May God grant you the clarity of thought and singleness of purpose to
seek out truth even if it takes you through the minefield of your own
closely held opinions. If you are diligent, you shall know the Truth and
the Truth shall set you free.
In HIS service,

if not angry, in their advance. But they all scattered
like a startled flock of birds when a large man suddenly
stepped toward me from between some buildings.
The man was wearing old rubber sandals, sweatpants,
a grease-sullied T-shirt, and a curdled scowl that
extended down to his bulging neck. I had been told
he was a man not to be trifled with and who had the
final say in all things pertaining to the Silwan Village.
I had paid well to meet this Palestinian man
who was, by all indications, the village headman.
He ponderously strode up and stopped only when he
was face to face with me. He was awkwardly close as
he breathed out, “Whuu you wunn?” There was no
handshake, nor any pleasantries associated with the
usual protocols of meeting someone new.
I had tried to get into the notorious Silwan Village a
couple of times before, but was always turned away
by strafing rocks from gangs of angry Muslim youths.
Over the centuries, this aesthetically impoverished
neighborhood has been known as an enclave of
murderers, thieves, and malcontents. In the 1800s,

the famed explorer Charles Warren wrote, “The people of Siloam [Silwan]
are a lawless sect, credited with being the most unscrupulous ruffians
in Palestine.” 1 Today it is not all that different in the Silwan Village.
The hefty man stood expressionless in front of me. His head was cocked
to one side, arms interlocked and feet planted widely. I asked, as calmly
as I could, for his permission to see the cliff area which was hidden from
view behind a row of nearby homes. All he offered back was a resolute
stare of distrust and the same repeated English words, “Whuu you
wunn?” which were hard to make out from the viscosity of a thick Arabic
accent. I assumed he was trying to communicate, “what do you want?”
I had come from the old city of Jerusalem to meet this man with my
Arab driver, Sammer, a local pizza shop owner named Jacob, and a
Palestinian man named Achmed. Achmed was a crafty sort of guy who
lived in the Silwan Village and I had paid him handsomely to bring
about this prearranged meeting.
It was comforting for me to finally be inside the walls of this nefarious
neighborhood under the protection of this village leader, or at least I
hoped I had his safeguard. I hurriedly dug in my pocket and fumbled

to remove my cell phone, which contained several pictures of the
Silwan Village dating back to the 1870s. The images on the small
screen showed the Silwan long before the place was choked with houses
and scattered with so much refuse. The man took my phone and stared
at it a long moment and to both my surprise and relief, the hint of a
faint smile ripened across his heretofore dour face.
The local youths and men started to appear again, seemingly out of
nowhere. Most of the crowd pressed in to see the phone’s vintage
imagery, trying to identify where their homes were now located and I
began to find the swelling crowd tilting in favor of my presence. A few
boys chuckled in delight and one man even patted me on the back as
he pointed proudly at the historical imagery of his neighborhood on
the luminescent face of my phone.
I was both pleased and relieved when the village leader shrugged his
broad shoulders with a slight dip of his head and gestured me to follow
him. It was a gesture I took as granting me permission to see the cliff
area. I felt sure that even if I tried to tell him why this particular cliff
was so important to me, he would never believe me. If my heart was
not racing enough, it now shifted to a different gear, but that is exactly

what I did not want to happen. I needed to stay focused as this would
probably be a one-time visit, and a short one at that.
I walked closely behind the man, going east down a fence line as we
maneuvered through the gap between houses. Off to my left, we startled
a pit bull who lunged at me, straining against his stout chain and thick,
leather collar. The dog was shaped like an engine block covered in brown
fur and displayed a set of slobber-glistened teeth. I walked on and noticed
off to our right a pair of mangy ribbed-thin cats hissing, apparently also
startled by our sudden visit.
The smoldering smoke, the barking dog, the hissing cats and the boys
shouting behind us made for an otherworldly experience. However, I was
not concerned with the cacophony of distractions. I was actually standing
at the foot of the stone cliffs I had come so far and had spent so much
time and treasure trying to see: the cliffs of the Silwan village. I gazed
up at several ancient split-open tombs, which were exactly as the Bible
described! My mouth went chalk dry, “Could this be the place…could
these cliffs actually be evidence revealing where Christ was crucified?”

The Phone Call
I answered the phone in my office but really didn’t want to. I’d been
working intensely on this book for twelve weary hours and the computer

screen was becoming line after line of blurry text. I exhaled a tired “Hello”
and heard a gravelly voice cut in: “Do not write this book.”
The voice belonged to a well-known scholar and longtime friend, who,
frankly, didn’t know much about what I had researched, written, or
discovered. But, he did know the subject matter was volatile.
I already knew suggesting an altogether new site for Christ’s crucifixion
would be controversial. But, to warn me not to even write about it out
of concern of what critics would caustically say, or do, was alarming.
This cautionary advice from my colleague surprised me because it came
from a man well known for passing through the razor-wire gauntlet of
critics who have opposed some of his own revolutionary interpretations
of Scripture. Our short conversation ended bluntly with, “Bob, you’ve
built an international ministry from your explorations, research, and
books. Don’t risk it all now.”
After the call, I shut down my computer and stared into its uncaring
face, which soon dissolved into a grey glow. I whispered uneasily,
“He is probably right.”
After all, who was I to proclaim that I may have discovered new
evidence showing the actual place where our Lord was executed?
And to my knowledge, it is where no one has ever looked before.
Catholics have held for 1,700 years that the place of the crucifixion is
under a church in Jerusalem. In the fourth century, Roman Emperor
Constantine proclaimed that his mother, Helena, had discovered through
visions and dreams the exact place where Jesus was killed on a cross.
A magnificent church was soon built upon that very spot. It was known
as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and exists to this day.
After Constantine, and during the ensuing Middle Ages, a dark shadow
of fear and superstition spread across Europe. It became an ominous
place where demons were thought to be lurking around every corner and
fairy tales handed down from generation to generation were believed to
be real. Grey-haired sages with withered faces told horror stories around
late-night fires, listeners quaking at the thought of goblins inhabiting

shadows just beyond their doors. There was a palpable fear of priests,
of missing Mass, and of soul-searing confessionals. Most of all, people
were terrified of what they considered to be a vengeful and capricious
God. If sudden lightning happened to split out of a brooding sky, whole
villages would be sent into a panic, cowering under a perceived curse of
God’s punishing wrath.
The Dark Ages were also a time when staid ecclesiastical directives
were not to be challenged and anyone doing so was considered to be
a blasphemer. Those that were accused of being a heretic were often
tortured till they recanted or, in more severe cases, chained to wooden
pillars with straw spread at their feet. When the fire was set, the
condemned frantically yanked on sooty chains that soon slackened in
morbid silence. The message had been sent for all to see: no one should
ever contest directives from clergy.

JULY 2016 | Personal UPDATE
It was against this backdrop of paranoid and spiritually paralyzing
fear that the Church of the Holy Sepulcher became the unchallenged
location for Calvary. After all, the Church and its ecclesiastical hierarchy
had certified it as the actual place of the crucifixion, the passage of time
sealing it into a seemingly irrevocable vault of tradition.
When the stagnated fear of the Middle Ages had run its course and
alternative religious constructs emerged, the Church of the Holy
Sepulcher was eventually questioned as being the true Calvary.
For instance, in 1883 a famed British officer named General Charles
Gordon boldly challenged the rightful pedigree of the Holy Sepulcher as
the place of Golgotha. His proposed place for the crucifixion of Christ
was nearby the Damascus gate.
While living for a time in Jerusalem, General Gordon observed what
he believed was a skull-like formation in a rock cliff near his temporary
residence. To him, Scripture suggested this as the “place of the skull,”
and thus, Christ’s execution location. Due to Gordon’s heroic status as a
war veteran, the designation of the site steadily gained acceptance. Since
Gordon was an avowed Protestant, as were the majority of his English
countrymen, the notion of a different site than the Catholic Church of
the Holy Sepulcher was appealing to many. A new tradition of Christ’s
execution, burial, and resurrection was conveniently born, to the delight
of British Protestants.
CORNUKE
Even though Gordon’s Calvary and the
Church of the Holy Sepulcher are visited
with swarms of sightseers daily, they are
both fraught with many geographical
flaws. Simply put, they do not align with
Scriptural directives. These inconsistencies
with the Bible will be examined in detail
later on in this book...

The Book of Revelation is the only book of the Bible with a
Promise to the reader! Why? What makes this book so special?
Revelation is a “lens” that puts the entire Bible into focus. The lens is focused
on the person of Jesus Christ, and his destiny is imminent. This is a book of
victory: We are overcomers! We are the ultimate winners in the game of life!
(I read the ending: we win!)
One of the reasons this book strikes us as strange is because of our lack
of understanding concerning the Old Testament. The Book of Revelation
consists of 404 verses that contain over 800 allusions to the Old Testament.
These are detailed, along with Chuck’s analysis of the design and structure of
this fascinating book. Learn about the past, present and future of the Church
and our ultimate destiny. This is an ideal “first study” and foundational for
every Christian.

here has been much attention paid to the plight of Christians in places
like Syria, Iraq and Pakistan. Story after story has been told of
atrocities against these people solely because of their faith. There is
one group, however, from whom we seldom hear.
Those are the Christians of Iran. Fortunately, there
are a few people who have been able to give voice to
that forgotten group.
When one thinks of Iran, one’s thoughts immediately
turn to the mullahs. As a country, many think of
Iran as a monolithic radical country who all think
alike, act alike and all hate the West. In truth, if the

mullahs were ever to take their foot off the neck of their people, millions
of Muslims would convert to Christianity as they have had enough of
oppression and violence from their religious leaders and have seen the
oppression that comes with Islam.
The “everyman” in Iran is not nearly as anti-Western as one would be
made to believe, at least when the cameras are off and they are in the
privacy of their homes and “away
from the craziness” as one former
Iranian has said. Many Iranians
were happy when the revolution
came because of the abuses of
the Shah, but quickly became
disillusioned and longed for some
sanity.
Mojgan Rezai’s father was one
them.
Mojgan’s (or Moji as she is called)
father was General Khalil Rezai,
a member of the Shah’s army.
Moji described him this way:
General Khalil Rezai.
My dad was a man of honor. During the revolution, they tried to find
something against him, because he was in the Shah’s army, but they
failed. His spotless reputation was exemplary. He was in charge of
Tehran’s prison factory at the time of revolution and everyone loved
my dad. That was the kind of man he was. He was a true man of God.
He taught us kindness, integrity, honesty and respect for all. He respected
everyone and treated everyone the same, no matter which side of the
bars they were on.
General Rezai was the warden at Iran’s main prison facility. The prison
held civilians, but was run by the military. To earn their keep,
the prisoners were farmed out to local businesses at bargain-basement
prices. Sometimes, the business owners would get prison labor at cut-rate
prices by paying the local warden a bribe. This was something General

Rezai refused to do. He also refused to steal the prisoner’s rations to enrich
themselves. Because of his personal integrity, when the time came,
his kindness to the men under his charge was repaid with equal measure.
The Iranian Revolution
Many people have the mistaken
belief that the Shah of Iran left the
country, the Ayatollah Khomeini
arrived in Iran and the Islamic
Republic of Iran was founded.
That is not quite how things went.
For a bit of background, Mohammad
Reza Shah Pahlavi (1919-80)
reigned as the king (shah) of Iran
from 1941 to 1979. The Shah was
viewed as a strong ally to the West,
but as Moji relates, many viewed
him (and his father before him) as
trying to westernize the country too
quickly. For an example, Moji said
that the government would have
Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi.
men stationed on top of buildings
watching the people walking down the street. If a woman was viewed
wearing a hijab (head covering), they would force her to remove the hijab
and replace it with a hat. This type of behavior would obviously upset
many people, especially those who took their Muslim faith seriously.
Many in the country also resented the Shah’s secret police, the hated
SAVAK. Therefore, in spite of a strong economy and a growing middle
class, the country was on the brink of civil war.
The opposition was led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who lived in
exile in France. His revolutionary messages were distributed through tape
cassettes smuggled into the country by Iranian pilgrims returning from
the holy city of Najaf. On them, he preached disdain for what he called
“gharbzadegi” (the plague of Western culture). The tapes came into Iran
in small numbers, then duplicated and spread throughout the country.

As discontent grew, the Shah saw his regime begin to crumble. At the
end of 1978, Shapour Bakhtiar, a critic of the Shah, was chosen to help
in the creation of a civilian government to replace the existing military
one. He was appointed to the position of prime minister by the Shah as
a concession to his opponents, especially the followers of the Ayatollah.
His acceptance of the position was viewed by many as collaboration with
the military regime and he was expelled from his National Front party.
Bakhtiar ordered all political prisoners to be freed, lifted censorship of
newspapers (whose staff had until then been on strike), relaxed martial
law, ordered the dissolving of SAVAK (the regime’s secret police) and
requested that the opposition give him three months to hold elections
for a constituent assembly that would decide the fate of the monarchy
and determine the future form of government for Iran.
His government lasted only 36 days.
Ayatollah Khomeini refused to cooperate with Bakhtiar, called him a
traitor and labeled his government “illegitimate.” Khomeini then called
for the overthrow of the Monarchy. Eventually, the Shah was forced to
leave the country in January 1979 and Bakhtiar left Iran for France in
April of the same year. (The Shah was to die of cancer in the United
States in 1980 and Bakhtiar was assassinated in Paris in 1991).
The United States as Midwife
In the United States, President Jimmy Carter viewed the changes in the
country optimistically. He saw the fall of the Shah and the rise of the
Ayatollah as a victory for democracy. He viewed Khomeini as one of
the “People of the Book” who had the same basic values as he did and
was a man of peace.
Carter perceived Khomeini as a religious holy man in a grassroots
revolution rather than the founding father of modern terrorism. Carter’s
ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young, said “Khomeini will
eventually be hailed as a saint.” Carter’s Iranian ambassador, William
Sullivan, said, “Khomeini is a Gandhi-like figure.” Carter adviser James
Bill proclaimed Feb. 12, 1979 that Khomeini was not a mad mujahid,
but a man of “impeccable integrity and honesty.” Carter did not

understand at the time Khomeini was an Islamic revolutionary. Ayatollah
Khomeini could never have succeeded without the help of Jimmy Carter.
The Islamic Revolution would have been stillborn.
The Madness
After Bakhtiar left the country, his worst fears were realized: radical
Islamic mullahs led by the Ayatollah Khomeini seized control of the
country. It was then the pogrom against the supporters of the Shah
began and people were executed by the hundreds.
Moji described this time:
During all this madness, the guards at the prison opened the gates and let
all the prisoners out. While the Revolutionary Guard were going through
the streets executing any man in the Shah’s army they could find, the
prisoners gathered around my parent’s house and protected my mother and
father against any harm.

On April 1, after a landslide victory in a national referendum in which
only one choice was offered (Islamic Republic: Yes or No), Ayatollah
Khomeini declared an Islamic republic with a new Constitution
reflecting his ideals of Islamic government.
Ayatollah Khomeini became the supreme spiritual leader (Valy-e-Faqih)
of Iran. Subsequently many demonstrations were held in protest to the
new rules, including Sharia Law.

With the mullahs saying there was nothing they could do, the “students”
were in complete control.
The crisis would continue for the rest of Jimmy Carter’s presidency and
define his term of office. As a final insult, the hostages would eventually
be released five minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in as Jimmy
Carter’s replacement as President of the United States.
Christians in Iran Today
After the revolution, the now former General Rezai wanted to retire to
a quiet life, but the Revolutionary Guard would not allow it. He had
such a reputation for honesty that they “asked” him to stay on in the
new government and work in the treasury. So Khalil went to work in
the Treasury Department and his wife Setare took Moji to Kentucky to

live with her older brother. Setare returned to Iran three months later
and rejoined her husband to care for another son who had significant
health issues. (He has since gone to be with the Lord.) Moji’s parents
would have stayed in Iran even if they had not had to care for their
child. They loved their country, but hated to see what had become of it.
Moji and her brother both believe their parents died of broken hearts.
Moji’s brother and his American-born wife have returned to Iran and
have a farm on the Caspian Sea away from the “craziness” and live a
quiet life. Moji goes to see them every couple of years. She loves to see
them and loves the country. Iran is a beautiful country and the people
are warm and open.
Underlying all of this, however, is a certain sadness.
The Dark Underside
President Carter and Shah Reza Pahlavi.
The Iranian attitude toward religion can seem contradictory—very chaste
in public but much less so in private. Moji said there is a famous picture
of President Carter toasting the Shah of Iran. Reminiscent of that picture,
there is a saying in Iran that goes, “There was a time we drank in public
and prayed in private. Now we pray in public and drink in private.”

The courts have the right to impose the death sentence on male apostates
and life imprisonment for female apostates. Effectively, Iran is a religious
dictatorship where little of consequence can occur without the approval
of the Guardian Council of Mullahs.
So it is ironic that those same Islamic Revolutionary Guardsmen who
chant “Death to America, Death to Israel” and enforce Sharia Law by
day, will also procure for you any kind of liquor by night. It seems that
Christians do not have a corner on the hypocrisy market.
The hypocrisy also does not stop at such trivialities like liquor.
Religious Freedom?
The Iranian Constitution specifically grants religious freedom to nonMuslim sects. According to the English translation of the Farsi text:
Article 13
Zoroastrian, Jewish, and Christian Iranians are the only recognized
religious minorities, who, within the limits of the law, are free to
perform their religious rites and ceremonies, and to act according
to their own canon in matters of personal affairs and religious
education.
Article 14
In accordance with the sacred verse; (“God does not forbid you to
deal kindly and justly with those who have not fought against you
because of your religion and who have not expelled you from your
homes” [Sura 60:8]), the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran
and all Muslims are duty-bound to treat non-Muslims in conformity
with ethical norms and the principles of Islamic justice and equity,
and to respect their human rights. This principle applies to all who
refrain from engaging in conspiracy or activity against Islam and
the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Despite these strictures, Christians continue to be persecuted because of
their beliefs. Some face severe physical and psychological torture while
they are imprisoned. Christians who hold home prayer meetings and
Bible studies, or are in contact with Christians outside of Iran are accused

of threatening the national security of Iran. These Christians have been
issued long prison sentences and have been subject to physical abuse.
Churches have been pressured into ceasing all services or activities in
their native language of Persian (Farsi), or are closed down. Property
belonging to Christians is seized and Christians face discrimination in
the workplace and in educational institutions.
Religious persecution of certain minorities has intensified in recent
years. This is aimed at the Baha’i, Sufi Muslims and Christians, especially
believers from a Muslim background. Almost all Christian activity is
illegal, especially when it occurs in Persian languages—from evangelism
to Bible training to publishing Scripture and Christian books. Yet the
regime’s harsh treatment of Christians only further fuels the flames of
church growth.
On May 22, 2010, Maryam Rustampoor and Marzieh Amirizadeh—
Iranian believers imprisoned for their Christian activities in March
2009—were acquitted of all charges. The women fled the same day
due to a warning from the Iranian judicial authorities that any future
Christian activities would have severe consequences.
In December 2010, Iran began arresting dozens of Christians in a
crackdown. The governor of Tehran province, Morteza Tamadon,
described Protestants and evangelicals as “corrupt and deviant” and
accused them of conducting an “enemy cultural invasion.”
During his election campaign, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made a
number of promises regarding religious freedom in Iran. He was quoted
as saying April 11, 2013:
All Iranian people should feel there is justice. Justice means equal
opportunity. All ethnicities, all religions, even religious minorities, must
feel justice.
Iranian Christians are still waiting for Rouhani to make good on his
promise.
Some Iran observers believe the Iranian government is taking a hard
line against Christians because they are making converts among the

Muslim population in the country. According to Sadeq Saba, Editor
BBC Persian, in a Dec. 2, 2014, interview:
One man was arrested because, as far as the authorities were concerned,
his social media activities went too far in questioning some of the tenets
of Islam and now he has been sentenced to death. This is a dangerous
trend. I hear from some people the reason the regime is taking such a
tough line against people like him is because a lot of people are becoming
disappointed with Islam as a religion because of what the regime is doing.
People are converting to Christianity - this is becoming very dangerous for
the regime. The harsh sentences are a way of controlling the situation.
Some observers believe even if President Rouhani should want to improve
religious freedom in Iran, the mullahs will not allow it.
A Voice of Clarity
In the 1980s, the widow of the Shah
of Iran, the former Empress Farah
Pahlavi said something extremely
interesting. During an interview, she
spoke of former President Carter’s
human rights issue:
What happened to those who cared so
much for human rights? Why when
the Shah left, didn’t the Iranian
people have any rights anymore?
What happened to the women?…
There is oppression which exists
in the name of religion in Iran.
What happened to those who cared?
Empress Farah Pahlavi.
Pray that for mankind’s part, the questions Mrs. Pahlavi asked 40
years ago are not left unanswered. We know, however, for God’s part,
her questions have already been answered.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he
delivered them from their distress.

MAYBE IT’S TIME YOU LEARNED THE TRUTH…
The community of Christian faith worldwide knows her as the finest woman who ever lived.
Born in obscurity to a distant descendant of Israel’s magnificent King David, Mary, the mother of Jesus
of Nazareth, was honored by the Creator of the Universe to be the person through whom God himself
would visit his own Creation.
No matter what you may have thought you knew, there’s a good possibility that you’ve been
misinformed about her. In fact, chances are you’ve been wrong from the start about the most
remarkable woman who ever walked the dusty roads of first century Israel at the height of the Roman
Empire’s power.
No, Mary isn’t who you think she is. More than twenty centuries have come and gone since a teenaged
virgin became the mother of God’s incarnate Son. As a result, far too much myth has grown up around
the person and story of the woman who became one of the foundational figures of human history.
But what the New Testament records tell us about the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus is fascinating
enough in its own right that accumulated legends seem to embellish the story.
So today, more than twenty centuries later, Biblical scholar and theologian Dr. William Welty pulls back
the dusty curtain of historically inaccurate tradition and introduces you to the very human, but utterly
magnificent character of Mary, the mother of the Messiah, as she struggles to pass Ten Test Questions
for the World’s Finest Woman.
In this analysis of every passage recorded in the New Testament in which she is mentioned, you’ll learn
why Mary, the mother of the Rabbi from Nazareth, rose from literal obscurity to become one of
the most pivotal figures in all of human history.

T
THE FEASTS
OF ISRAEL
he anti-Semitism of the early Church is one of the great tragedies of
history. While the teachings of Jesus came straight from the
Hebrew Scriptures, a backlash against ritualistic devotion to
the Law developed into a deliberate attempt to steer away from
the Old Testament. Tensions with the Jews led to severe persecution
as the Church became a dominant political institution during
subsequent centuries. A wedge was driven between Jews and Christians,
although both worshipped the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Jewish communities developed a staunch resistance to Jesus as the
Messiah, and Christians lost the richness of Jewish history and prophecy,
the very foundations of faith in Jesus Christ.
As Christians, we need to understand our Jewish roots. Many of the
teachings of Christianity take on deeper insight and meaning when we
understand them in a Jewish context, and few places is this more clear
than in a study of the feasts of Israel. The seven Feasts of Moses are
not only commemorative historically as they are observed in Judaism,
but every detail of these seven feasts are anticipatory of the person and
mission and achievement of the Messiah.
Every Jot and Tittle
The great discovery in my life has been the realization that every detail
in the Scriptures is there by supernatural engineering. Every number,
every location, name, even implied punctuation is there by design.
The Bible contains 66 books by 40 authors, and yet the entire volume
is an integrated message system. Once you discover that, you have a
whole new appreciation for why God puts His Word even above His
own name.1

The feasts of the Torah were directly dictated by God to Moses with
a greater purpose than to give the Hebrews an occasional day off
throughout the year. These feasts are still venerated in modern Judaism—
Jews observe them, even to this day and they are very sensitive to their
heritage. The ancient Hebrews called the feasts of Israel “the Appointed
Times,” and the Jewish calendar offers many treasures to New Testament
Christians even today. The Law itself is our tutor.
Jesus emphasizes the prophetic importance of the Law when He tells
the Jews, “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for
he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe
my words?”2
We might expect Jesus to fulfill the words of the prophetic books of the
Bible, but Jesus makes it clear that He came to satisfy the words of the
Law as well. The very Torah, the five books of Moses down to every last
little dot, tells us about the Messiah.
In Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus assures His disciples, “Think not that I am
come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy,
but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one
jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
The smallest letter in the Hebrew language, a jot (or yod) looks like
an apostrophe, hardly more than a little scratch. Tittles are the tiny
decorative hooks on letters. In other words, Jesus declares that every
detail of the Hebrew Scriptures is important, down to the tiniest
letters and marks. If He were speaking in English, He might have said,
“Not one crossing of a ‘t’ or dotting of an ‘i’ will pass from the law till
all be fulfilled.”
This is one of the reasons we’re so intrigued with a rabbinical viewpoint
that says the rabbis won’t really understand the Torah until the Messiah
comes; but when He comes He will not only interpret the passages,
He’ll interpret the very words, He’ll even interpret the very letters. In fact,
He’ll even interpret the spaces between the letters. A colorful exaggeration
until one considers the verse above where Jesus Himself implies that the
very parts of the letters are, in effect, sacred.

The Old Testament is not merely a collection of Jewish history and law;
it is God’s message of salvation to a fallen humanity. Paul picks up on
this when he says in Romans 15:4: “For whatsoever things were written
aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and
comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
The ultimate commentary of the Bible is the Bible itself. “And whatsoever
things were written aforetime…” Paul says, referring to all the ancient
texts of the Old Testament, all of them in one sweep, “were written for
our learning…”
Something Hidden
St. Augustine famously highlighted, “In the Old Testament the
New Testament is concealed; in the New Testament the Old Testament
is revealed.” Each is incomplete without the other. But the message of
salvation isn’t necessarily clear at first skim through the Old Testament.
As Hosea 12:10 says: “I have spoken by the prophets, and I have
multiplied visions and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.”
A similitude is a figure of speech that describes something by likening
it to another. Before we dig into the feasts themselves, it is important
to understand the various ways that the Bible communicates. A great
many prophetic ideas are not directly explained; they are developed in
a deeper way through repeated actions and visual pictures and culture.
We find many examples of similitudes in the Bible in the forms of similes,
metaphors, allegories, parables, and prophetic types.
Similes are a familiar form of expression used to compare one thing with
another. Rather than merely calling Jack’s feet “cold,” we might elaborate
and say, “Jack’s feet felt like blocks of ice.” The Psalmist groans in Psalm
22:14, declaring, “I am poured out like water… my heart is like wax…”
Metaphors offer comparisons without saying, “like” or “as.” That is,
“Jack’s feet were blocks of ice.” In Psalm 22:14, the writer says of his
heart: “…it is melted in the midst of my bowels.” His heart isn’t actually
physically melted like wax; he is using the metaphor to describe his
current suffering.

Hypocatastasis is an implied resemblance that avoids naming the
described thing at all. “Jack walked on blocks of ice.” In 1 Corinthians
13:12, Paul describes our current spiritual dim-sightedness when he
says, “For now we see through a glass, darkly…”
Parables are short stories that represent an idea by comparison.
They create symbolic pictures in the imaginations of the hearers.
“For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder,
which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard…
”3 Parables teach a simple message or lesson.
Allegories are like extended parables, long stories with multiple symbolic
parts that teach meaning. The tale of Pinocchio is an allegory about the
struggle to choose right over wrong. When Pinocchio fibs repeatedly,
his nose stretches and grows leaves to represent the reality that, “A lie
keeps growing and growing until it’s as plain as the nose on your face.”
When the boys go wild on Pleasure Island, they all begin to sprout
donkey ears and tails and hooves and faces, representing the jackasses
they have all made of themselves.
Types are often used in the Bible to foreshadow a person or event that
has great future importance. The name “Jesus” is a variation of the
Hebrew name “Joshua,” which means “Yahweh is salvation.” As Moses’
successor, Joshua became a type of Jesus in many ways—as the captain
of the armies of Israel, as one who leads his people into the Promised
Land and gives them rest.
These are some of the more common figures of speech, but in an
appendix to our book, Cosmic Codes, we list more than 200 that are used
throughout Scripture.4 Because types are such an important prophetic
tool in the Bible, we will look into their use here in more depth.
This excerpt is from Dr. Chuck Missler’s book The Feasts of Israel, available as paperback

Is our universe some kind of cosmic accident, or is it the result of careful
and skillful design?
What do scientists mean by "The Anthropic Principle"?
When compiling the many physical and mathematical subtleties which
make up our universe, scientist have discovered that a slight variation in
any of them militates against the existence of life. Even at the atomic
and sub-atomic level, the slightest variation in any of the primary
constants of physics - some as sensitive as one part in over 1,000,000
- cause life to be impossible. Even secular science refers to these
appearances of apparent design as the "anthropic principle," since they
yield the impression that the universe was designed specifically for man.
