VIEW FROM THE PILOT HOUSE
Cdr Gary Millington, SN
I hope everyone is enjoying a fun and safe
summer on and near the water. While the
Johnson City Sail and Power Squadron's
Education Department takes a well-deserved
summer break, our social and community
outreach efforts are in full swing. We've had
a number of outstanding events already;
look for the details in this edition of the
DOCKSIDE. These events would not happen
without people stepping forward to help. I
would like to thank all who made the Boone
Lake Poker Run such a success...our hard
working hosts RAY and KATH BOUCH plus
the crews who hosted stops: MARSHALL
and BRENDA HERRON, ED REYNOLDS,
LU FIFE and ED and LORRI ROGERS. The
Boone Lake fireworks cruise was a hit
thanks to chairman BOB YOUNG, and the
South Holston “impromptu” fireworks raft-up
was also a success thanks to organizer
RICH MOAKLER.
The "Captain Bill
Memorial Fish Fry" was very well attended
and is a welcome fund raiser for the
squadron. Many thanks to MARTHA NAN,
NANCY and MITCH MEREDITH for all their
efforts.
We are very pleased to welcome MARC
NACHMAN as our new Administrative
Officer. Marc's sailing experience on
Watauga Lake and his stand-up paddle
boating venture plus his extensive business
and communications skills position him to be
a valuable contributor to the JCSPS team.
Unfortunately
we've had a
number of
t r a g i c
accidents on
our area lakes
this summer.
JCSPS has an
opportunity to
lead
by
example when
we are on the
water. Please
remember to
practice sound
seamanship,
encourage
others to "Wear-It," and keep a sharp lookout
for other boaters and hazards. I look forward
to seeing you on the water!
WELCOME ABOARD!!
P/D/C Marshall Herron, SN
Once again, our membership is growing; and
we have new members to report!
Brenda Herron hosting at the Executive
Committee Pizza Bash
These volunteers deserve a lot of credit for
helping to make JCSPS a strong, active
squadron. Next time you see them, give
them a high five! I also want to give a shoutout to the staff of our award-winning
DOCKSIDE newsletter: Editor NORMA
MARTIN and Publisher SUE LOCKETT. A lot
of work goes into creating this excellent,
professional-looking publication each month;
and it's a very effective communications tool
for JCSPS.
ADAM CARVER has returned to our area
and has renewed his membership in our
squadron. He became a member of the
squadron in 2008 but moved away for a
couple of years. Adam has returned to our
area and our membership! Good to have
you back, Adam!
New members ERIC AND COURTNEY
EASTMAN are friends of Rob Morley and his
fiancee Ashley Hood. They live in Kingsport
and boat on Boone and South Holston
Lakes. Welcome, Eric and Courtney! (Eric
and Courtney attended the recent Poker
Run, where Courtney won third place!) Rob
and Ashley are friends of Tracy and Kathy
Hart, who invited them into membership.
This is how it works...friends inviting friends
who then invite friends!!
ANOTHER WINNER!!!
P/C Norma Martin, P
This year's POKER RUN on June 14 lived
up to its reputation as being one of our most
popular events...and RAY AND KATH
BOUCH also upheld their reputation as
being super hosts for this event!! About 60
people enjoyed the beautiful, if a-bit-warm
day with about a dozen boats making the
rounds of five stops.
We enjoyed great
stops we've had before...BRENDA AND
MARSHALL HERRON's (Herron Landing),
ED REYNOLDS AND CINDY SIMPSON'S,
AND LU FIFE'S. A new stop this year was
hosted by ED AND LORRI ROGERS at their
beautiful home. Thanks to all for their warm
hospitality and super refreshments! The last
stop was the Bouches, where we all enjoyed
a wonderful potluck to accompany Ray and
Kath's hotdogs with all the trimmin's! They
outdid themselves once again!
This gathering was the perfect place to
officially welcome new members ED AND
LORRI ROGERS. As evidenced by their
hosting a stop, they are well on their way to
becoming involved in our squadron!
Welcome aboard!
Suspense was high as Ray, assisted by
ALLEN WHITE AND WILSON WHITEHEAD,
opened the envelopes to reveal each hand.
Winners this year were:
first:
RUSS
THORNBERRY; second, KAREN YOUNG;
and third, COURTNEY EASTMAN, who
came with ROB MORLEY AND ASHLEY
HOOD. CONGRATULATIONS!! (By the
way, Rob and Ashley will be getting married
in August! Our best wishes to them!)
rewarded with a terrific view of the fireworks.
Fred and Gina Pinney enjoy the beautiful day
as well as the Poker Run!
A HUGE THANKS TO ALL, including
BELINDA DAVIDSON for taking great
pictures!
What a great way to kick off the July 4th
holiday weekend!
BOONE LAKE FIREWORKS RAFTUP - Saturday, July 5
P/C Norma Martin, P
SOUTH HOLSTON IMPROMPTU
RAFT-UP AND FIREWORKS
With MARSHALL AND BRENDA HERRON'S
“Bee Gee” as our anchor boat, our raft-up
included about ten boats total, including
several boats from Rockingham Marina,
invited by the DAVIDSONS. We joined the
“hundreds” (sure wish I knew how many
there really were!) of boats gathered near
Lake Meadows to listen to live music and
tributes given to various veterans, as we
awaited the fireworks display. Many of us
had family and friends with us, so it was a
Cdr Gary Millington, SN
Impromptu raft-ups are a very nice part of
the JCSPS experience! Hats off to RICH
MOAKLER for organizing a raft-up on South
Holston Lake on Thursday, July 3. This was
a great afternoon to enjoy the lake and each
other's company in advance of the fireworks
display at Lakeview Dock. We had three
boats rafted up in Rich's favorite cove with a
total of nine people in attendance. After
enjoying a dinner of burgers and various
salads, it was time to head to a better
vantage point to see the show. We were
amazed to emerge from the cove and find
the lights of many boats twinkling across the
entire expanse of the lake as the sun set.
We found a safe spot to anchor and were
great time to enjoy the camaraderie and
beautiful evening.
Our wait was well
rewarded, and we were entertained with a
fabulous show to celebrate our nation's
birthday. Thanks to BOB YOUNG for
organizing the raft-up!
JULY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
MEETING & LAKESIDE PIZZA BASH
Cdr Gary Millington, SN
Many thanks to MARSHALL and BRENDA
HERRON for hosting our combination
Executive Committee meeting and
Midsummer Lakeside Pizza Bash on
Thursday, July 17. Their wonderful spacious
covered deck overlooking Boone Lake was a
great setting for our monthly meeting which
featured a review of our upcoming events.
The weather was perfect for the occasion
too...sunshine, gentle breezes and
comfortable temperatures. After the meeting
we enjoyed pizza, salad and refreshments
followed by Brenda's tasty brownies and
cookies.
What a nice way to spend a
summer evening!
dock. We ate lunch at a restaurant upstairs
while waiting to board the ferry to Road Town
where Sunsail and the Moorings are located.
The ferry trip took about an hour. Those who
sat outside on the upper level were treated
to a show starring the birds who glided
above the radar dome and frequently dove
into the water to catch fish.
After arriving at the boat docks, we had a
short wait while the boats were prepared for
the group. The groups boarded the boats,
unpacked, and looked in shops for additional
wants and needs.
BVI TRIP
THE FIRST THREE DAYS
Henry Harris, S and Chele Harris, S
We began our BVI trip in St. Thomas on
Wednesday, May 14, staying at a bed &
breakfast called Two Sandals by the Sea.
We toured St. Thomas on Thursday and
went over to St. Johns by ferry on Friday.
Saturday we returned the rental car to the
airport and met the rest of the group as they
arrived at St. Thomas.
The group gathered at Cyril E. King Airport
as flights arrived and made their way to the
awaiting vans from Sunsail and The
Moorings. The sailboats were rented from
Sunsail, and the catamaran from The
Moorings. The vans took us to the ferry
Sunsail boat dock where the sailboats were
located for our group.
The boat chartered by Commander Gary
and Judy Millington, Steve and Cindy Brumit,
and Mitch and Nancy Meredith was a 51’
sailboat. It was called La Bella Vista. Greg
and Pat Robins, Mike and Laura Robins, and
Henry and Chele Harris were on their 51’
sailboat, Sambamba. That name caused a
lot of joking as the name was hard for some
to pronounce or to remember.
Both
sailboats had four cabins with four heads.
The galley area had a refrigerator, freezer,
stove, microwave, and about anything
needed for a long voyage.
Stern view of La Bella Vista and Sambamba
The galley and dinning area
of La Bella Vista and Sambamba
Walt and Parke Brumit, with Tate and Emily,
along with Rich and Betsy Moakler were on
the 39’ catamaran, named Sea Star.
Sometimes Sea Star took alternate routes to
explore different sites in the islands.
The catamaran Sea Star, the only power boat in
the fleet of three. It had one large master cabin
on one side and two cabins on the other side-perfect for a family.
The Sea Star was anchored in a good place for
swimming and snorkeling toward the Indians.
When viewed in some angles, the rocks appear to
look like three Indians.
Norman Island was the first harbor stop,
where some experienced their first try at
hooking the mooring ball rope loop and
securing it to the boat. A short trip in the
dinghies was made to the Pirates Bight
Restaurant where all sat at one large table
and caught a beautiful picture of the sun
setting near the palm trees.
Chele Harris took a picture of the first dinner of
the first day on the water--at Pirates Bight
Restaurant on Norman Island.
Dinner that first evening was at one of the
nicer restaurants located at the SunSail and
Moorings dock. The group sat at two tables
with their boat mates.
After sleeping on the boat at the dock, as
required the first night, orientation was held
after breakfast to get familiar with the boat
and equipment. The Bella Vista had an odor
problem which was fixed by replacing a bad
battery before departure.
The boats pulled out of Sun Sail dock about
11:30 a.m. The first stop was at the Indians,
where some snorkeling and swimming were
done around the reef.
Trunk Bay, one of the most popular beaches for
snorkeling in St. John.
After returning back to the boat, the
Sambamba had a generator problem and
had no air conditioning for the first night. The
next morning everyone set sail for the Baths
on Virgin Gorda Island, which has a group of
huge boulders on the beach. After mooring,
several people swam to the shore to explore
the Baths National Park. The huge boulders
were climbed over and under and water was
wadded into. One can only wonder how the
rocks got arranged in these positions! The
repairman showed up to make repairs to the
generator on Sambamba. Henry, Greg, and
Mike got an in-service on what to do when
sea grass gets into the water intake, which
was needed later in the trip when the intake
again got stopped up.
For some members of the group, this was the first
experience with the all-important dingy which is
pulled behind each boat It is used to transport
the crew from the boat to shore or other boats.
STAY TUNED...THE BVI STORY CONTINUES IN
THE NEXT ISSUE OF THE DOCKSIDE
SAVE THOSE CAPS AND TABS!!
Thanks to Joan Sinn for this suggestion.
She encourages us to consider saving:
•
Soda and beer can tabs for Ronald
McDonald House or Shriner's. You
can turn them in at the Ronald
McDonald house in the parking lot of
the Johnson City Medical Center.
Ring the doorbell and they will take
them from
you on the
porch; or if
the house is
empty, you
can enter the
foyer and
leave them.
You can also
turn them in
at the
Shriner's, in
back of the old Sam's off I-81 and
past Waste Management, up the hill
to the building.
•
Plastic caps from your water, juice,
soda, and milk containers. They can
be brought to the Friendship Hyundai
dealership in Johnson City; they
process these caps to benefit various
charities.
Sailboats seen on the path through the rocks.
Mike Robins leads
Henry and Chele
Harris through the
spectacular
scenery on the
path through the
rocks.
After leaving the
Baths, the group
sailed to Marina
Cay Island where the boats got more
practice with the mooring balls and prepared
for dinner. In between rain showers, the
group took their dingy to Pusser’s Caribbean
Grille Restaurant for dinner during the heavy
rain storm. After returning to the boats in the
rain with water past their ankles in the
dinghies, everyone got a little wet but was
glad that the rain happened at night; and
everything cooled off a bit.
Joan says, “When all else fails, bring them to
us, and we will deliver.” Thanks, Joan!
