That is certainly true for me; and probably many of our current JCSPS members also had their first exposure to the squadron in one of our classes. That makes me think about one of the core strengths of our squadron--we have a wealth of talent and experience to power our educational offerings. We have a lot to offer to the boating public as we fulfill our mission of teaching boating safety. Are you taking advantage of all the opportunities? Are you telling your friends and marina neighbors? Our classroom courses remain our core offering. Currently, Education Officer MITCH MEREDITH, Advanced Grades Chair JOHN WHITEHEAD, Assistant Education Officer STEVE BRUMIT and their crew of expert instructors are doing a super job on Piloting. Lots of good information and experiences are being shared. Drop by Northeast State on a Monday night and check out a class! We are adding new learning options too. We taught our first on-water training sessions this year. Mitch also has a collection of twoto-three-hour seminars on a variety of subjects that we can teach on demand. Also, in 2014 we ran a record four TWRA certification classes passing a total of 70 students! Interestingly, about 30 percent of the students were adults. Great engagement with the boating community. USPS offers a series of online seminars on several topics at usps.org. This is an opportunity to reach people who may not be available to attend a class in person. Also, JCSPS is notified if someone within 40 miles takes an online class, and we can make our pitch for membership. Lastly, USPS now has a "virtual trainer" available for local squadrons to use at boat shows and special events. Hopefully we will have this here early in the new year. As you can see there are plenty of education options! Squadron members have a special opportunity coming up soon. We are planning a combined Operations Training and 2015 Planning Session on Saturday, November 8. This is a great opportunity to learn how the squadron runs behind the scenes and find out how to make activities run smoothly and easily and make input on what you would like see happen next year. I strongly encourage incoming Bridge members plus committee and event chairpersons to attend. Look for details elsewhere in this edition. NEW MEMBER WELCOME P/D/C Marshall Herron, SN Please welcome DAVID W. MILLER to our squadron! David is currently taking the Piloting course and already knows several of our members. He is a neighbor to Ray and Ava Walker and Tom and Pearl Dotson. He also works with Henry Harris. (Thank you, Henry, for bringing David to our squadron!) MEMBER INVOLVEMENT & YOUR ROLE IN IT P/C Steve Brumit, AP So I've paid my dues and gone to a couple of events, but just how does this organization work? Who decides what events get put on the calendar and who plans them? Who do I talk to to learn more about what this boating group does? What should I do with the membership renewal that has landed on my kitchen table? I would like to learn more about boating and doing it safely with my family, but what courses are offered and when? If these are just a few of the questions you have asked yourself about the Tri Cities Boating Club and the United States Power Squadron, you are not alone. Navigating through this one-hundred-year-old organization to find out how it works is mostly found in print form at: http://www.usps.org/national/om/pdfs/ opsman05.pdf. I think one of the best pages on the USPS site is the "how do I..." page at: http://www.usps.org/newpublic2/howto.html. These are great ways to learn about how the squadron works. “So how do I fit into the mix?” you ask. The simple answer is, "Get Involved!" To assist you in doing that at the local level, we have the Member Involvement and Retention Committee. If you have been a member less than a year, you will even be assigned a “friend," who will be happy to aid you in getting the most out of this organization. Our allvolunteer-led squadron encourages each and every member to play a role in carrying out the boating safety, educational, and community service goals of the squadron, as well as participating in our very active social calendar! As chairman of this committee, I encourage you to contact me with any questions, suggestions or comments you might have. Member involvement is key to the success of our organization, so we encourage you to take part in our upcoming Operations Training session. It is an informative halfday of learning how the squadron is organized, who the leaders are, and what their job descriptions entail. All members are welcome and all officers, committee chairmen, and event chairmen are expected to attend. This year's “Ops Training” is being held at the Garland Farm Estates Clubhouse in Johnson City on Saturday morning, November 8, 2014, starting promptly at 0830. We will conclude the training around noon. Again, this free course is open to all members. Pre-registration is required so that adequate space is available for you. Contact MARSHALL HERRON (423-791-2660) or STEVE BRUMIT (423-737-9922) for more information. OPERATIONS (“OPS”) TRAINING Who: The membership is INVITED! All 2014 & 2015 officers, committee chairmen and event chairmen are EXPECTED. When: Saturday, November 8, 8:30 AM – Noon Registration at 8:15 AM What: Ops Training is offered every other year and is designed to be informational about the United States Power Squadron organization, our local squadron's relationship to it, and where the squadron has come from, is now, and wants to go. One major focus of Ops Training is to acquaint the membership with job descriptions of the squadron's leadership. Since we encourage all of our members to be active in volunteering, this training will be beneficial to all! Where: Garland Farm Estates Clubhouse 330 Garland Farm Blvd., Johnson City, TN 37615 Specific directions can be found on the flyer for the Chili Cook-Off, being held at the same location. If you plan to attend, please contact Marshall Herron 423.791.2660 or [email protected]. PLANNING SESSION FOR 2015 All members, including past and current event chairmen, are encouraged to attend the 2015 Planning Session that will follow the Ops Training. This will be a great opportunity for new members to help shape our 2015 activities. More details to follow! “Come for the training and planning...stay for the CHILI!!!” HOLSTON HOME FOR CHILDREN “DAY ON THE LAKE” Steve Scheu On Saturday, August 23, on another beautiful day on Boone Lake, the Johnson City Sail and Power Squadron entertained about 30 kids, along with counselors, from the Holston Home for Children. This annual event of boating, tubing, swimming, food and entertainment took place again at MARSHALL AND BRENDA HERRON’s Marina and Water Park. On Friday, under the guidance of FRED AND GINA PINNEY, members of the squadron put together tables and chairs under shade pavilions and prepared for the food. The HHC kids showed up on Saturday morning to find PFD’s ready to put on and boats ready to take them cruising. First came an hour-plus long pontoon boat ride as Power Squadron members and friends BUD MARTIN, JOHN WHITEHEAD, MARK AND CHANDRA CARVER, KEN AND STEVE CARVER, and CORKY AND MARY STEADMAN took the kids out for a tour of squadron gear in the trailer. While a great time was had by all, including Power Squadron members, by 5 PM you could hardly tell that the HERRON's Marina had been packed with youthful revelers (of all ages) just a few hours before. There is quite a group effort involved in putting on this event, which is all about the children and providing them with a fun, safe boating experience. A special commendation goes out to FRED AND GINA PINNEY who again did a heck of a job organizing the event and getting Power Squadron members and friends to participate. There were a lot of Boone Lake. While the Squadron has been putting on this event for a number of years, there were still kids that had never been on a boat while others were just as excited to be back based on previous experiences. After the tour, everyone sat down for a sumptuous repast of hotdogs, beans, potato salad, chips and plenty of drinks. Next came the tubing as the PINNEYS, the BRUMITS, the CARVERS, the SCHEU'S and the FLANAGANS with their speedier boats took out those kids who were ready and willing to test their endurance on the tubes. There were lots of spills and laughs as a good, wet time was had by all participants. Next was free swim time off the dock as well as plenty of kayaking as the BENNIES brought their eight kayaks for everyone's enjoyment. The afternoon was topped off with the usual and always delectable brownies, ice cream and chocolate sauce. After a group photo and thanks from the all the kids, the participants piled into their transportation and headed back to Greeneville. Being mid afternoon, the remaining crew went to a “debriefing” session held on the marina's upper deck, aided by some adult beverages, and then packed all the folks at the HERRON’s, and it takes a lot of back-room effort to prepare for this event. FRED AND GINA did another excellent job making sure the event was a great success. Another special thank you goes out to the HERRONS for allowing the event at their home. And more special thanks go out to all the Power Squadron members and friends who provided boats, food, towels for the participants, time, energy and much more to make the event one that the HHC kids will remember and look forward to next year. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. We hope all members can participate next year too! Editor's Note: Check out the following link for an excellent article written by one of the Holston Home staff members: http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/article/ 120367/boating-club-gives-holston-homechildren-lifetime-memory P/C Steve Brumit cordially invites you to attend the Holston United Methodist Home for Children Friends of Children Dinner Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Meadowview Convention Center, Kingsport Seating at 6:30 PM; dinner served at 7:00 PM Speaker: Bradley Williams, President/CEO If you would like to attend, please contact Steve Brumit, 423.737.9922 or [email protected] or Cindy Brumit, 423.212.0188 Tables will be reserved for our members Along with our hosting the children of the Holston Home for our annual “Day on the Lake,” we have a special bond with the Home. This will be a very informative evening for anyone wanting to learn more about the Holston Home and an opportunity to learn what God is doing there. It will be a fun evening as well!! There is no charge for the dinner; it is, however, a fundraiser where privately-made pledges will be sought but not required. (P/C Brumit serves on the Board of Trustees at the Home.) FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE P/C John Whitehead, SN Eleven hardy souls gathered at high noon on the first fall Saturday at Lakeview Marina to watch the TennesseeGeorgia rivalry. We were all hopeful of a victory to snap a fourgame losing streak. The Vols got off to a great 10-0 start only to fall behind 21-17 at half time. They battled gamely in the second half and had several chances to go ahead but in the end fell 35-32 to the Bulldogs. Alas, it was another MORAL VICTORY but our fifth consecutive defeat. On the bright side of a sunny afternoon, we all had fun eating a great lunch with our favorite beverage and watching a very exciting football game. Maybe next year. (Editor's Note: A big “Thank you!” to Wilson Whitehead for the great collage of Vols fans!) THE BVI SAGA – THE CONCLUSION Cdr Gary Millington, SN This is the final installment of the three-part JCSPS BVI series. Eighteen people spent the third week in May, 2014, in the British Virgin Islands aboard three chartered boats. The "Sea Star" was a 39-foot flybridge power catamaran crewed by Rich and Betsy Moakler; Walt and Parke Brumit, daughter Emily and son Tate. Greg and Pat Robins, son Mike and his wife Laura, as well as Henry and Chele Harris were aboard the "Sambamba," a 51- foot sailboat. The "La Bella Vita" was another nearly identical 51foot sailing vessel crewed by Captain Steve Brumit and Cindy, Mitch and Nancy Meredith, and Judy and Gary Millington. The British Virgin Islands saga concludes with some highlights of the last few days of the JCSPS charter trip. Eighteen people on three boats enjoyed a terrific week in the BVI's in May. Wednesday saw the two sailboats head for Anegada Island while the crew of the “Sea Star” powercat opted to forego the crossing and check out the comforts of some intriguing nearby resorts. The “Sambamba” and the “La Bella Vita”-twin 51-foot sloops--prepared for the sail to Anegada, a low, coral-atoll type island out of sight of land. We were looking forward to this navigational challenge as we plotted our course carefully and calculated variation and deviation. It was another perfect day in paradise as we dropped our mooring at Leverick Bay Marina, motored out, raised our sails and pointed the bow out to sea and headed over the horizon. We settled in on a starboard tack with a gentle easterly breeze and favorable sea conditions in the turquoise waters, with the “Sambamba” abeam. But were we headed in the right direction? Frequent checks of our compass and both our iPad and shipboard chartplotter by the navigators showed we were on course. Sure enough, the island gradually began to appear right on schedule, and we soon identified the outer markers. We lowered our sails, and Captain Brumit made our approach through the narrow channel under motor power. No moorings were available, so we dropped anchor in shallow water alongside a number of other boats. The total crossing was completed in three and a half hours. Shortly after settling in on the hook, we were hailed by a guy in a dinghy promoting the new Anegada Beach Club and their featured whole lobster dinner. So, after consulting with the crew of the “Sambamba,” we decided to board our dinghies; and the two crews headed ashore. The Anegada Club is located on the scenic backside of the island. But no problem...courtesy transportation is provided by the resort. So all 12 of us plus the driver piled into a pickup truck rigged with benches and after 10 bumpy minutes, we were at the club. We explored the beach and enjoyed the pool and sampled various tropical drink concoctions under the thatched-roof bar. And the lobster was fantastic! Thursday morning found us preparing for our longest sailing leg of the trip--26 nautical miles from Anegada Island to Jost Van Dyke. We set the sails and autopilot and relaxed while the chartplotter counted down the miles. Five hours later we were abeam a pretty island with a nice beach called Sandy contact with many millions of dollars worth of fiberglass until we decided to anchor at the outer end of the harbor. We reunited with the crew of the “Sea Star” for refreshments and dinner at the famous Foxy's Bar and Grill and enjoyed another fun evening in the BVI's. On Friday we had a short sail to Soper's Hole, a very pretty pastel harbor with many shops and restaurants. We savored a seafood lunch at one of the local dining spots, checked out the shops, then ate dinner on board as we used up our leftovers. P/C Meredith grilled some excellent hotdogs on deck...everything tastes better in the BVI's! Saturday morning found us getting an early start to motor upwind to Roadtown where we sadly ended our cruise and said our goodbyes and headed for our ferry connections. This was an outstanding charter trip, and we elected to share our adventures in this threepart series in the hope that others will want Cay. The crew voted to go ashore for some exploring and snorkeling. By then, the deck crew was well-drilled, so we quickly lowered the sails and dropped the hook. We piled into the dingy, landed on the beach, and enjoyed an hour marveling at the fascinating underwater scenery. We then motored the remaining two miles to our Thursday night destination, Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke Island. The “Sambamba” and “Sea Star” had already arrived, and we went in search of a mooring ball. Captain Brumit maneuvered the “La Bella Vita” in the shallow water of the very crowded anchorage, skillfully avoiding to take part in a future trip. It truly is a great opportunity to gain experience in biggerwater cruising, navigation and boat handling from fellow JCSPS members. I certainly learned a lot from the captain and crew of the “La Bella Vita.” Orchestrating a trip like this requires a lot of planning and effort, and we owe 'Admiral' Greg Robins a huge vote of thanks. The next question is, “Where are we going next?!?” (Photo credits: lobster photos, Mitch Meredith; others, Cindy Brumit. Great job!!) DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL Ellen Johnston September 6 marked a new beginning for our squadron as we became an official sponsor of the Mountain States Health Alliance Dragon Boat Race at Winged Deer Park. Though some of our members have participated in the past under the leadership of KEN FARST, this year we became official sponsors, providing and setting up the floating race course and providing safety boats for all practices and for the race event. P a r t i c i p a t i n g m e m b e r s w e r e G A RY MILLINGTON, STEVE BRUMIT, RICH MOAKLER, JOHN WHITEHEAD, MARSHALL HERRON, STEVE SCHEU, BOB RUSSUM, KEN FARST, GARY AND SUSAN ENDRES, AND ALLEN AND ELLEN JOHNSTON. Boats were provided by the HERRONS, SCHEU'S, ENDRES'S, JOHNSTONS and a very valuable PWC by the RUSSUMS. efficient at ensuring the paddlers were safe, assisting with righting the boat and towing it back to the ramp so the race could continue. Steve mentioned that this kind of an issue usually delays the race significantly; but thanks to the help of our member volunteers, the race was only delayed by two minutes. Bob Russum, with his PWC, was able to get Head Coach Steve to the overturned boat quickly. Well done, JCSPS!!! (Editor's Note: A big thank you to Ellen Johnston for chairing our participation in this event. Great job, Ellen!) A great big thank you to those who helped this year and a shout out to the rest of you who might be willing to participate next year. It's fun and easy work and it creates an opportunity to get the word out there about who the JCSPS is and what we do. We never want to pass up an opportunity for good publicity! This year the event included 32 teams who paddled and raised $100,000 toward providing an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) for the Niswonger Children's Hospital . . . and we helped ! It should be noted that we made history at the event this year as it was the first time there has been a dragon boat capsize during our actual race event.
