Flightline The Official Newsletter of the Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club July 2013 An AMA Leader Club-AMA Charter 0142 The 2nd largest AMA Club in the United States Prado Hosts Scale Squadron Scale Squadron 7th Annual Fly-In June 7-9, 2013 The Scale Squadron’s 7th Annual Fly-In was a great success, in a large part, due to the participation of the many Pomona Valley Flyers. The Scale Squadron Board and its membership would like to thank wholeheartedly those PVMAC members that spent three days in the hot sun helping to make this event memorable. Without their support we could not have produced this successful event. The Squadron would like to give special thanks to the Phil Goodwine and his family for their support and the vast amount of equipment that they donated for the weekend. The Squadron will be reciprocating in November at the Pomona Valley’s Big Jolt Electric event. The Fly-In was attended by 61 pilots, who brought over 100 scale airplanes to fly. Saturday morning began with breakfast egg sandwiches and registration. A pilots meeting, the national anthem and open flying followed. The noontime demo started off with a dogfight produced by Flying Brian Young’s large scale FW-190 and Mike Middleton’s Bearcat. The second act was formation flying with Ken McSpadden and John Bayshore’s AT-6’s. We finished up the noontime demo with a runway lineup of contestants airplanes. This is the time when the public is invited out to the runway to talk with the pilots and to vote on their favorite airplane. Saturday and Sunday were both beautiful days for flying. The weather was moderate and the winds were light. We could not have asked for better weather for this event. At 2:00 pm we held our big raffle where we gave away an 80 inch Sukhoi with motor and radio and also raffled about 30 other items. We finished flying near 4:00 pm where we adjourn to the Chino Airport for a lively banquet in the hangar. The event was catered by Zendejas Mexican restaurant. We topped off the evening with an auction where we sold some great scale modeling items and two airplane rides in Ken Wagner’s P-51 Mustang. Sunday morning began with the breeze blowing but it soon gave way to sunny skies. The guys flew until about 1:00 pm and shortly gathered near the announcer’s booth where we started the awards ceremony. Fifteen plaques in nine categories were handed out. The Squadron once again gave away $50 gas cards to contestants who drove the farthest. The cards were awarded to pilots from Higginsville, Missouri, Phoenix and Mesa, AZ., and the group of pilots from Las Vegas, NV. Once again I would like to thank the Pomona Valley Board, Phil Goodwine and his family, and the rest of the Pomona Valley members that supported and participated in the Squadron’s 7th Annual Scale Fly-In. Norton Notes By Paul Smith Stan Wagner coaching his 9 year old granddaughter Ella on the Apprentice S 15e What better way to spend the 4th of July than teaching your granddaughter how to fly RC? That is exactly what is going on here as Stan Wagner is coaching his 9 year old granddaughter Ella who was visiting from her home in Albuquerque. No buddy box was required because Stan had her flying his new Apprentice S 15e electric foamy trainer from E Flite. It has “sensor assisted” 3 axis stabilization that returns the model to level flight at the flick of a switch on the transmitter. Ella’s only previous experience was some sail plane flying but she was able to handle the Apprentice S all the way from just after takeoff through smooth landings. She was the hit of the day and got cheers and encouragement from the Norton field gang. 2013 PVMAC Upcoming Events July 21 - Members BBQ Prado Airpark - Chino CA November 1-3 - Big Jolt Electric Fun Fly Prado Airpark - Chino CA December 8 - Toys for TOTS Fun Fly & Swap Meet Prado Airpark - Chino CA The Norton Field will host a swap meet every 2nd Saturday of the month Club Meetings !
