Main green job creating sectors so far are: water, waste management, agriculture and services Main growth potentials identified in energy, water and waste Green Jobs Assessment in Tunisia «The success of implementing green policies is dependent upon the availability of skilled people people»» The Tunisian economy can face an increase of up to 80.000 green jobs in the near future. Most promising green sectors are waste management, water, renewable energy, construction and organic agriculture Cost of additional green jobs is higher than conventional jobs. Exceptions are to be found in construction and agriculture Tunisia has high levels of unemployment (>20%) plus a large informal sector (>30%) making job creation a national priority. Renewable Energy: A survey conducted among 22 companies in solar heating resulted in low demand for training. Therefore extension to photovoltaic energy. «The success of implementing green policies is dependent upon the availability of skilled people people»» Green Jobs in Tunisia – Feasibility Study Sousse Current situation: ∗ Report in preparation ∗ Key figures for selected sectors difficult to establish on local (regional) level: Statistical data mainly on national level, no data available on green sectors or decent work ∗ Survey results still patchy, number of companies in each sector is small due to the size of the territory ∗ Trainees currently being selected ∗ Trainings to be held with the support of Institut de l’Olivier and with ATFP ∗ Delays due to Ramadan and summer break Conclusions «The success of implementing green policies is dependent upon the availability of skilled people people»» • Economic potential of some sectors • Territories in Tunisia relatively small for sector/value chain analysis • Challenges of informality among the barriers to business development • Decentralisation is key to economic development and to greening the economy • LED approach is an important tool for green jobs creation (both direct and indirect/induced jobs) and for inclusion, participation, democratization Thank you Merci ﺷﻛرا Contacts: Jan-Marius Tillmanns Email: [email protected]
