Welcome!! Welcome!!
For the first time in a decade, there is an album of all new material by The Ocean Blue who had great
major label success in the 90s. Now, founding members of a new label co-operative, Korda Records,
in their adopted home town of Minneapolis, Ultramarine will both satisfy and appease long time fans
and acquire legions of brand new ones for The Ocean Blue.
Jason Elmore & Hoodoo Witch’s last release in 2010 caught us all by surprise. The man who was
named “Dallas‚ Best Blues Artist” last year captured fans around the world with his blistering guitar
works; that both captures the past and proclaims the future. Dig it!!
Just because they are a lo-fi duo, doesn’t mean The Copper Gamins are a Mexican White Stripes. They
are something else indeed. Seventeen songs nicely crammed onto one CD. Dig this one too!!

We are pleased to welcome Portland-based Fluff and Gravy records to the Burnside fold this month
with releases from Sassparilla, Mike Coykendall, and Drunken Prayer all available on both CD
and Vinyl.
Those fine purveyors of traditional Scottish music, Battlefield Band, were formed the year of
the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair (undoubtedly not as a reaction to it) and the year that man walked on
the moon - 1969. That’s a long time for any band to be around but these gents are still active and
vital with a catalogue of over three dozen releases (an output unmatched by almost everybody except
Sun Ra).
And finally, we hope to cross paths with a number of you at SXSW this month.

Davidson Hart Kingsbery, 2 Horses
The Davidson Hart Kingsbery band formed in 2010 and shortly after were invited to serve as house band for a
series of underground 2-step parties. Seattle’s Hart Kingsbery was born in Paris, Texas in 1979. His family moved
around a lot before settling in Washington State, raising Hart in a devout religious environment where he sang
hymns in church, did 15 years of bible camp and graduated from a religious college. After a bad early divorce,
he turned his back on the church, accepting damnation as the payback for a life of barroom debauchery, only
to discover that the country songs he’d begun to write told stories of a different sort, that of the damnation of
affairs of the heart.

Good Lovelies, Live at Revolution
The aptly named Good Lovelies are Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore, all of them best friends and
refugees from solo careers. Part folk-roots, part Western Swing; the Toronto-based trio relies on unerring
three-part vocal harmonies, clever songs, and - on stage - funny repartee drawn from a seemingly endless
succession of comedic adventures on the road. The latest album, Live At Revolution, showcases the glorious

The Copper Gamins, Los Ninos De Cobre
The Copper Gamins follow the splash created by their 2012 debut EP with a 17-song long player, Los Niños de

This “Ramshackle All-Star Country Band” fashions itself a sort of modern-day Highwaymen. DENVER’s co-founders and
chief songwriters Birger Olsen, Mike Elias and Tom Bevitori (Alela Diane’s Wild Divine) exchange lead vocals, swaying
drunkenly between dusty saloons and that lonesome country air. The band’s line-up has a supporting cast that includes
Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley and Michael Van Pelt, drummer Sean MacNeil, and a rotating crew of Portland’s finest.
“Drums in the living room, singer in the bedroom, four-track cassette recorder, cases of beer, whiskey, sandwiches and a
sunny porch,” is how Olsen sums the recording sessions; recorded and engineered at a friend’s mother’s house by Earley
and Van Pelt, and mixed by Mike Coykendall (M. Ward, She & Him, Blitzen Trapper).

Federale, The Blood Flowed Like Wine
Federale’s third album expands on their efforts to re-capture the haunting, violent atmosphere evoked by
classic Spaghetti Western films. TBFLW maintains Federale’s use of operatic vocals, fanfare trumpets, lonesome
whistle, twangy reverb guitars and men’s choir. TBFLW expands Federale's vocabulary to include lyric driven
songs (feat. Alex Maas of the Black Angels and KP Thomas of Spindrift); string performances (Portland’s 45th
Parallel Ensemble), flute, French horn and oboe (with members of the Oregon Symphony) and pedal steel (Paul
Brainard of Richmond Fontaine). Federale’s music has been featured in the CW show Supernatural,

Stewart Francke, Love Implied
Stewart Francke releases Love Implied, his follow up to Heartless World (2011), a record that won Francke new
fans via his scorching duet with Bruce Springsteen, Summer Soldier. In addition to the Springsteen duet,
Francke and his band carry the momentum of having performed with Bob Seger, Warren Zevon, Chicago,
Steve Earle and Stevie Winwood. “Love Implied started out as a very simple, acoustic music,” Francke says,
“played by real people, with real emotional input. But then it was layered into this lush Wall of Sound with
acoustic guitars, a lot of slide playing, and vocal harmonies.” As the title of this new record connotes, the new
album has a lot to do with how adults experience each other in love, or in a marriage, or in a complicated
relationship. “I’m trying to cover a lot of ground when it comes to love implied or otherwise on this record.”

The Heligoats, Back to the Ache
Back to the Ache is the latest from Washington-based singer/songwriter Chris Otepka and his Chicago-based
band, The Heligoats. Otepka spent 2012 on tour as The Heligoats (four piece and solo), as well as playing
guitar with Clem Snide; crossing the USA three times and playing over 100 shows. 2012 also saw the release
of the Loose Ends EP. After a successful full band tour, Chris Otepka and The Heligoats spent April & June 2012
in Chicago’s Observatory Studios with Erik Rassmussen and Portland’s Jackpot! Studios with Larry Crane.
This is the first recording and musical collaboration between Chris Otepka and drummer Nate Lanthrum in the
7 years since their time in Chicago based indie/punk band Troubled Hubble.

Barna Howard, Barna Howard
Missouri’s clearest voice since a certain steamboat pilot, Barna Howard is a meticulous craftsman. His are
songwriters’ songs, weaving melody and narrative in ways only the best have. Howard grew up in Eureka,
Missouri, a small town outside of St. Louis. He now lives in Portland, by way of Chicago and Boston. The contrast of growing up in a small town and moving through cities has had a heavy influence on his writing. He is
attracted to personal stories that resonate universally but still, most of his songs’ characters come from his
Missouri youth. Major influences are Bert Jansch, Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt and James Talley. This debut
was recorded in a damp Portland basement studio and serves as a simple, stripped-down introduction.

Preston Lovinggood, Sun Songs
A simple guitar arpeggio and a distant, eager vocal kicks off Sun Songs, the much-anticipated solo effort of
former Wild Sweet Orange frontman, Preston Lovinggood. Four years in the making under heavy mentoring
by label founder Jeffrey Cain (Remy Zero), Lovinggood explores uncharted sonic territory with songs of desolation, longing, paranoia, and hope. The entire record is beautifully lo-fi with bits of punk rock, acoustic ska
riffs, and new wave - but distinctly 21st century. Taylor Hollingsworth helmed the production and recording; his
contribution to Sun Songs is undeniable with bluesy electric riffs, slide guitar, well-placed feedback, and
creaky, sporadic drums. Not the predicable sequel to Lovinggood’s past work, Sun Songs is a perfect left turn.

The Ocean Blue’s debut record (Sire Records) in 1989 achieved widespread acclaim and radio & MTV
airplay. The band of four young high schoolers from Hershey, Pennsylvania went on to release two more wellreceived records for Sire (the atmospheric Cerulean and alt pop Beneath the Rhythm and Sound ) and a fourth
record for Mercury/PolyGram, See The Ocean Blue, before leaving the majors in the late 90s. The band had
several independent releases in the 2000s, and within the last several years began working on a new full length
record; their first in over 10 years. Ultramarine is on Korda Records, a new Minneapolis cooperative label that
the band helped launch in late 2012. Ultramarine is a spectacular return to form that recalls the band’s
earliest work, and should appeal to fans old and new alike.

Rebecca Prosnky’s new record, Only Daughter, finds the Brooklyn songstress steering away from the twang of
2011’s Viewfinder into more layered, ethereal sounds. Producer/guitarist Rich Bennett and Engineer Scott
Solter (Mountain Goats, John Vanderslice) have a lot to do with that, but it is still Pronsky and her luscious
voice that anchor this new set of songs; her most confident and personal record yet.

From the colossal opener, Turned Guns, the spark is lit and the album burns until the epic closer, Fly us to
the Moon. Every hook, time signature and melody moves seamlessly throughout the forty minutes.
This album showcases System and Station as a sum of its parts. RFK Heise (Vocals, Guitar) is the primary songwriter and arranger but the execution is purely System and Station. The thunderous rhythm section of Adam
Schultz (Bass) and Bryan Fairfield (Drums) is honed on the album in the form of an unstoppable train. Josh
Vasby (Guitar, Vocals) weaves in and out of the arrangements with colors and shades of light and dark as well
as shining vocal harmonies with RFK. Lucky for us, the long road System and Station has travelled is paved
with albums like these.

Battlefield Band, Room Enough For All
A bedrock of talent for over four decades with several dozen albums under their belt, Battlefield Band continue

The long-awaited return of Venezuelan singer Maria Márquez, and the follow-up to her critically-acclaimed
2004 Adventure Music release, Nature’s Princess. Tonada was produced by Maria and percussion great, John
Santos, and features some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians, such as Mr Santos, Peter Barshay, Rich Kuhns
and Scott Amendola, among others. Also featured, is special guest Ray Bonneville on slide guitar.

“In a recurrent dream of mine, I find myself in a room full of pianos of all colors and sizes, and I am free to walk
around and play them as I wish. This dream became a reality, thanks to Richard Zirinsky, Jr from Adventure Music
and Jim Luce from Klavierhaus, who made it possible for me to come into the Fazioli Piano Salon in New York
and make myself at home. And what a home it was: a treasure room full of amazing instruments, just waiting
to be played. I selected one Fazioli concert grand, which was then tuned and adjusted to my playing style,
and went on to play whatever music flowed into my mind over three evenings. Over the course of the recording, I could feel the Fazioli changing its voice to fit my playing, as my touch and dynamics changed to explore
the feel and the sound of the piano. It gave me a sensation of connection and symbiosis, a fantastic musical
