Welcome!! Welcome!!
It's always nice to be able to give a tip o’ the hat to someone who used
to work at Tower Records, that sadly departed venerable institution of
music. So here’s to you Chino Moreno! Yep---that’s the singer from
Deftones who spent some time at Tower home base in Sacramento in
the 80s before striking success with that band. And he has a side
project (or three), that has been stirring for a couple of decades---Team
Sleep. They had one studio album on Maverick (aka Madonna’s label)
ten years back and sporadically appear on stage for a show or short
tour during Deftones’ down time. Last October, Chino and his five Team
Sleep bandmates set up in a barn in Woodstock and that incredible
evening of music has been captured live on disc. Cool beans!
Kindie Music/Kids Music/Children’s Music---all the same to us here at
burnside. We like it; A LOT! Caspar Babypants, The Not-Its, Recess
Monkey, Kira Willey, Brady Rymer, Tom Chapin and more---we got ‘em…
and are dang proud of it. This month, Red Yarn joins that lineup with a
stellar new album---Portland-based but universally appealing, the Deep
Woods Revival album is a welcome addition to our assortment.
FACT---There simply wasn’t a band like the Charlatans before they
existed. The psychedelic SF Victorian cowboys took the summer of ’64
off and away from the Haight and set down in the Red Dog Saloon in
Virginia City and changed things up musically. And in biblical fashion,
they begat the San Francisco Sound. Widely acknowledged but seldom
heard, these dandys reunited in 1997 for a live show that is finally
available and we are pleased to offer it up this month. By the time you
read this, you (and we) will have missed their 50th anniversary shows in
the hills of Northern Nevada…how can you miss them if they won’t go
away?
Nice to have a new Mike Coykendall album---longtime bdc favorite, he
did work in these offices for a spell in betwixt jaunts with M. Ward, She
and Him, latenight TV appearances, producing Richmond Fontaine and
others---it’s about time…
Tom Dyer fondly recalls the History of Northwest Rock series of Jerden
albums of the 60s filled with Seattle garage classics and therefore puts
his stamp on those albums and songs that we all love and revere…

The five parolees from Lubbock have done it again with their newest release Hey Y'all It's (The

The Felice Clemente Trio’s latest 6:35 AM was awarded four stars by Downbeat. This Italian

Bocephus King & Orchestra Familia, The Illusion of Permanence
This new album by the Canadian original dreamer and songwriter, Bocephus King is titled Illusion of
Permanence. Bocephus King strives for a wiser songwriting full of details and quotes that takes the
listener by hand and follows him through a labyrinth of mirrors and illusions with an evocative and
dramatic soundtrack. Amongst the instruments are violins, persian setar, and warm percussions which

Chris Cacavas & Edward Abbiati, Me And The Devil
Appaloosa presents the new album from the former Green On Red keyboardist, Chris Cacavas, with the
Lowlands leader, Edward Abbiati, featuring long time friends: Mike Brenner, Winston Watson, David
Henry, Richard Hunter, Stefan Roller and Andres Villani. Cacavas says: "I am as proud and pleased what
we have achieved with this record as I am with anything else I've ever made in my career". The album was
recorded in five days in an old barn just outside Pavia. With Cavacas and Abbiati unencumbered by their
previous work and looking for a sound between soul ballads and rock echoing the Stones, the result is
perhaps, as the they both say, an album of Garage Folk.

Mike Coykendall, Half Past, Present Pending
Veteran songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Coykendall is best known as a sideman,
producer, and recordist via his work with M Ward, Blitzen Trapper & Richmond Fontaine to name a few,
but he has also been making his own unique outsider records since the mid '80s. His latest takes the
listener closer to his live performances, using the "rig”, his one man live set-up, consisting of on oversized
Kay electric guitar, a tin can kick drum and a huge set of high-hat cymbals, all mixed in with lots of reverb,
delay and crunch. The record itself mixes excellent new compositions with some from his back catalogue
with fresh interpretations of other writers songs (he covers Roger Miller, Syd Barrett, etc) to great effect.

Cutrufello, Mary, Faithless World
Mary Cutrufello is a blast of energy and talent. She signed with Mercury Records at the end of ‘90s and
recorded with Benmont Tench and Kenny Aronoff, travelled far and wide throughout the States with
Springsteen E Street Band member Danny Federici, Neil Young and Jimmie Dale Gilmore until she had
to stop due to health issues. With her 2008 comeback album, 35, Mary gave us a great record with
beautiful songs, good rock vibes and a perfect return to her firm rock and soul mix with powerful

Desert Noises, 27 Ways
Recorded in the magical Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, Texas, with producer Nick Jodoin (Black Rebel
Motorcycle Club), 27 Ways turns those experiences into songs which detail 27 ways of breaking away and
becoming a touring rock 'n' roll band. The album incorporates influences of beat-oriented soul and R&B as
well as classic psychedelic rock (Led Zeppelin is a big touchstone), often in the same song. Desert Noises

Angels on the other side is a marvelous record, suspended between rock and folk, driven by a brilliant

Tom Dyer's New Pagan Gods, History of Northwest Rock Vol. 1 1959-1968

Tom Dyer is a Pacific Northwest fellow---a rather noisy one. For his 9th release in the last six years, he
embraces the NW canon of his youth---works by The Sonics, The Wailers, Paul Revere & The Raiders,
The Ventures, The Fleetwoods, The Kingsmen, Merrilee Rush & The Turnabouts, as well as many
lesser known gems from the 1959-68 period, when Northwest bands could deliver radio hits on the teen
beacon of Seattle's KJR. To execute this difficult task, a raucous band of Green Monkey all-stars was
assembled with members of King County Queens and the Green Pajamas. Producer Steve Fisk was
brought in to track the unholy racket. There was no attempt to duplicate the originals; we knew those could
not be topped. The plan was simple. Play these songs with love and verve, with reverence (but not too
much). Be true to the mountain-fresh spirit!
